Head Start Essay example
Head Start
Head Start and Early Head Start are comprehensive child development programs which serve children
from birth to age five, pregnant woman and their extended families. They are child focused programs
that have the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children in low income families.
. These programs try to prepare young children intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically for
their future educational and social endeavors. ( U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,
2002).. The programs prepare the parent(s) to be supportive in the endeavor. Head Start has the
philosophy that parents are a child s first and most influential teacher. The Head Start program is
beneficial to early learning.

The program serves approximately
915,000 children. During the 1999 reauthorization, Congress decided that there was a need for
standards of literacy (which have not yet been fully implemented) . ( Good Start, Grow Smart: The
Bush Administration s Early Childhood Initiatives, 2002).
In the 1994 legislation revised Head Start performance standards.
Guidelines and new standards were set nationwide. The legislation focused on infants and toddlers and
their families as well as quality services for children. The education program is designed to meet the
needs of each child in Head Start.
Children must meet specific guidelines in order to qualify for Head Start. Family income (over the last
year) is considered. The family must be a low income family (income below the official poverty
level). Other things taken into consideration for acceptance are the lack of another pre school program
in the community, a population of less than 1,000 persons and residence in a remote area.
Head Start programs emphasize the importance of early identification of health problems. Referrals
are made to various agencies after each family s needs are identified. Every child accepted into the
program receives free medical benefits. The child must have a thorough physical examination and a
complete dental examination, as well as hearing and vision screening. Follow up and treatment are a

Memphis International Airport ( Mem )
The following paper explores how Memphis International Airport (MEM), the world s second busiest
cargo shipping airport, handles its day to day operations involving passenger airlines in conjunction
with
FedEx commercial shipping. By comparing DOT and FAA reports, along with the airlines and FedEx
s
shipping statistics, an airport capacity and congestion problem is disproved. Since Delta closed down
their MEM hub, passenger air travel has dramatically decreased while cargo shipping has continued to
steadily climb. Other airlines have started offering services in and out of MEM but were only able to
increase passenger travel by 1%, in 2014. The different operating schedules of passenger and cargo
shipping, allow for each of them to conduct their flights without hindering the operations of the other.

What Is The Myth Of The Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad is a popular topic in United States history, but many of the stories told
about it are more myth than fact. Quilts have been often used as a symbol in children s picture books
to further the understanding of one of the darkest periods of United States history: slavery. Parents and
teachers have eagerly embraced these illustrated books as a way to understand and teach past turmoil.
Many of these books suggest that people who participated in the Underground Railroad used quilts as
a means of communication to help slaves safely escape to freedom. The idea of quilts as
communication tools has been well received, and many educators have created wonderful programs,
guides, and lesson plans to extend the experience with these books and to further explore United
States history; however, what is depicted in these books have been consistently contested by quilt
historians and folklorists This essay discusses the myth that secret codes were stitched into quilts to
help slaves escape to freedom and why this myth continues today.
After the Civil War, an explosion of published information in the form of diaries, letters, and
autobiographies like Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, written in 1861 by literate slave Harriet
Jacobs and William Still s 1871 The Underground Railroad, detailed the abuses of slavery ( Harriet A.
Jacobs ; Still). In addition, from 1936 1938, the WPA Federal Writers Project conducted thousands of
interviews and recorded the firsthand

since the beginning of its creation. In this article, the author claims that despite the misconceptions
that many have about the practice of voodoo, Haitians don t consider it as their religion, but more
something that they serve and use to meet their religious needs. While most of them consider
themselves Catholics, Haitians serve the lwa, which are African spirits that are honored for their
powerfulness. Practiced since the beginning of the Haitian Revolution in 1791, Voodoo helped Haitian

Essay The Death of Socrates
The Death of Socrates Viewing the painting The Death of Socrates by Jacques Louis David, one can
perceive many different subject matters, both literally and metaphorically. The obvious is seen within
the setting of the painting. The clear illustration of where the event is happening provides the onlooker
with a glimpse into a different time and era. Conversely, the artist has taken the liberty to hide deep
meaning inside the work of art through less apparent means. Symbolism through art work has endured
from early works to contemporized ones, here is no different. Taking the two aforementioned into
consideration gives us a glimpse into both the symbolic and factual significance of the occasion. What
we can term as the Roman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Given the body of a Greek god, Socrates seems far from frail and is bursting with strength and power.
Furthermore, to give Socrates an air of wisdom, he was given a beard. The beard which is
representative of knowledge and intelligence flows freely upon the great teacher as his time of
execution approaches. While appearing to have the divinity of a god, Socrates is still painted with
physical emotion. The duality of being godly and human at the same time may have been a recurring
theme at the time this was painted. Not only looking at the mere representation of the figure who is
Socrates, but by examining how he is situated among others in the painting also uncovers meaning in
of itself. Studying the way that Socrates body is situated you can see that the artist is trying to make a
statement of nobility in self sacrifice. The finger of Socrates is pointed upward and is in the highest
position in the chamber. Much like a mountain commands the landscape, so does Socrates finger in a
room full of disarray and uncertainty. This can also tells us that although ready to die and in his final
hour, his teachings and beliefs will continue to live on. Although Socrates is on his deathbed he still
continues to teach and philosophize. Something else that should be noted is the posture of Socrates.
His back is completely erect with no support. Everyone else in the picture

Herodotus And Vespucci Essay
But while Herodotus and Vespucci use similar strategies in evoking the marvels of the far reaches of
the world, what of the darker shadows on the edge? Both authors do claim that monstrous things can
hide on the fringes of maps, and as Grafton points out, Vespucci s descriptions of his monsters often
echo older texts like the Histories. For example, both Europeans of Vespucci s day and Herodotus s
Greeks loathed cannibalism, so cannibals serve as appropriate menaces for the reader seeking
knowledge about the world s farther regions. In his Histories, Herodotus writes that a people called the
Padaei have a custom that when a man falls sick, his closest companions kill him because, as they put
it, their meat would be spoiled if he were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, these monsters exist hazily in the Histories, but still exist. In contrast, Vespucci s monsters
remain only people. In his letters, the cannibals seem the most monstrous in actions, but they do not
appear physically abnormal to Vespucci s eyes as a dog headed man would be to Herodotus or the
Libyans. Vespucci characterizes the peoples of the New World, cannibals included, as having big,
solid and well proportioned bodies , a far cry from having eyes in the chest (48). While other tribes not
mentioned as practicing cannibalism attack Vespucci, he describes the tribe of cannibals as being of a
quite courteous disposition and fine stature , noting that they do not devour their own people or
women in stark contrast to Herodotus s own cannibals (Vespucci 9). As a result, in Vespucci s work,
select actions create monsters, not immutable physical qualities. While a nuanced difference, it proves
vital one when considering where the authors sit in history. Herodotus s Greece did not seek
widespread colonization of the lands where dog headed peoples reside, and so Herodotus may leave
his monsters to the mists of rumor. Vespucci, however, resides at the forefront of a wave of conquest
that eventually reshapes both the New and Old Worlds irrevocably. He goes to the Americas with a
divergent agenda than the one Herodotus

Dance Obstacles
The beginning of class was a bit challenging because it has been so long since I have actually
practiced dance and stretched. The workout and warm up for the first two weeks kept my body in
great shape capable of feeling relaxed and muscles moving. The warm up made the dances a bit easier
to actually keep up, but still was a challenge. The way the stretches are handled are great because it is
a new routine my body has not gone through. It is quiet the challenge because my left leg is stronger
than my right, but I push through to have the equal exposure. I am a dancer who learns by seeing the
movement being taught step by step then I expose myself to the new step procedure. I have difficulty
with copying and mirroring because my mind cannot process different directions. It gets easily as I
continue the step and actually slowly do it myself, but I build up the pace as I actually get the steps
myself. I also notice my body is stiff and that has always been one of the challenges I noticed being a
dancer. When I learn something new I create this tension that stiffens my spine and it only becomes
relaxed once I clearly know the passages myself. The carving through space is a new exposure to ...

Gender Equity in Health and Health Care Essay
Introduction It is often challenging to have health care services that meet the needs of Canada s
diverse population and the needs of both men and women. Gender influences access to care and
women in particular are at risk for face difficulties to care (Ontario Women`s Health Equity Report,
2010 p.1). Women are more likely to be poor and have greater caregiver responsibilities in contrast to
men. These both factors are barriers to accessing health services. The way the health care system is
organized creates barriers to accessing effective care for women because it has failed to take into
account that men and women use the health care system very differently. Canada s health care system

Failure of Addressing Women s Health Needs Supporting Family Members Providing Care Gender
based analysis is a critical component of reforming Canada s health system as it helps policymakers
understand disparities in health status, how health and illness are experienced and how men and
women access and interact with the health system (Health Canada, 2003). Today s health care system
does not take gender into account because it does not considers the kinds of care and support that
women define as important to their health and well being. In 2002, Commissioner Roy J. Romanow,
released a report entitled the Romanow Report offering recommendations on how to reform and renew
Canada s health care system. The Report stresses the importance of health equity and addressing the
differing health care needs of men and women, in order to improve access of health services. A
recommendation the Report lists is, developing programs and services that recognize the different
health care needs of men and women, visible minorities, people with disabilities, and immigrants
(Romanow, 2002 p. 155). Health equity is refers to study of people of different class, social economic
status, age, gender, education, sexual orientation and ethnicity having access to the health care

Much of the Roaring 20s was a continual cycle of debt for the American farmer, stemming from
falling farm prices and the need to purchase expensive machinery. ( The Farming Problem ). Tractors
had just graced the U.S. markets which boosted the production of goods greatly. Most would think this
was good, but it was more of a problem, the farmers would overproduce goods without enough people
to buy them all which made the goods almost worthless. The farmers had to borrow money to pay for
their tractors, assuming they would be able to pay back the debt with the money that the tractor made,
but when they found they could not it set them up having no money and a debt with no way to pay it
back. When the stock market crashed in 1929 sending prices in an even more downward cycle, many
American farmers wondered if their hardscrabble lives would ever improve. ( The Farming Problem ).
The stock market crashing made the stocks the farmers though they would be able to get some money
from virtually worthless.
The Dust Bowl only made matters worse. Between 1932 and 1940 it is estimated 2.5 million people
abandoned the plains for other regions of the country. (Woolner) California received the majority of
these migrants; roughly four hundred thousand. The Californians who were there before the migrants
were unhappy about them coming in and taking their jobs, often referring to them as Okies (most of
them came from Oklahoma). They were even prohibited from

The New Jersey And Virginia
In May of 1787, individuals from each state assembled in Philadelphia, to transform the United States
government into an effective and powerful nation that conducted affairs in workable ways. The
delegates meeting at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787 were given consent to alter
and revise the Articles of Confederation. Except for those from New Jersey and Virginia, the
representatives intended to revise the Articles. The primary issue that they resolved was that of State
Representation. William Paterson and his associates offered a list of suggestions for revising the
Articles of Confederation in his New Jersey Plan. Paterson, a delegate from New Jersey, supported the
weak national government that the Articles made. Paterson declared imbalance of the rights of the
small states against the large states and wished to expand upon the Articles making a more
representative and all around well organized government. Under the Articles, Congress had no way to
avert war or to provide for national security against foreign intrusion. The government could not
resolve the fight between states, manage interstate exchange, collect taxes, or uphold laws. These
shortcomings of the confederation distressed political leaders. Accordingly, they requested an
assemblage in order to revise the Articles and restore the fledgling country. The Virginia Plan,
composed by James Madison and proposed by Edmund Randolph presented a government separated

Should Teenagers Use The Internet Essay
Why there should not be a time limit on the use of the internet
Anti social, drop in grades, eye damage these are some of the topics that are brought up in
conversation when talking about the use of the internet and how long teenagers are using it. But do
they mention the pros of using the internet? In my opinion, I think teenagers should the internet more
often. Teenagers use the internet for help in school, they gain computer skills and learn what is
happening out in the world through the use of social media.
A key aspect of how the internet use of the internet should not be limited is the knowledge. The
internet is growing and becoming more advanced every day that we as humans cannot keep up. By
teens using the internet, we would gain knowledge about the internet, for example, finding out what
source is credible and also, becoming more aware of websites that could possibly be harmful to our
computers. All these factors could be helpful in the future. For example, in an online article 10 great
things teen learn playing online by Christy Matte, it states that Viruses, limited computer space
browser crashes are all realities of time spent online. Learning to prevent and/or cope with this issue is
fundamental in becoming a savvy computer user. As kids explore on the computer, they are picking up
valuable information about this practice. ( source 2). Teens could learn a lot from just simply using the

The Prevalence Of Type 2 Diabetes
The increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is causing huge health problem through out the world
including developed countries. Mostly people with low income groups are affected in developed
countries (Zimmet 2001).The magnitude of the healthcare problem of type 2 diabetes results mainly
from its association with obesity and cardiovascular risk factors. Indeed, type 2 diabetes has now been
identified as one manifestation of the metabolic syndrome , a condition characterised by insulin
resistance and associated with a range of cardiovascular factors (Jonathan 2003)
According to Zimmet (2001), about 150 million people in the world have been suffering with diabetes
and it would be 300 million by 2025. Another interesting study by AusDiab in 2000 revelead that
7.4% of the population aged 25 or over had diabetes (type 2 in 90%) Since 1981, the prevalence of
type 2 diabetes has increased to twice in and the total number of cases has increased threefold in
Australia (Dunstain 2002).Although type 2 diabetes is effecting all races,it was identified highly in
south Asians and also worlds one third diabetic population is from indian continent ( Jean 2008).
According to the report from Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in United states of America,
nearly 25.8 million people have been affected by diabetes in 2010 with 90 95% of them being type 2

Allusions In Crime And Punishment
Crime and Punishment, written by Fyodor Dostoevsky, is a novel about the actions of a man, his
punishment, and his eventual redemption. Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, (Raski), is a man with
many flaws. By the end of part one, he had already murdered two women, a pawnbroker, and her
friend. This act is very important for it sets the tone for the rest of the plot. The majority of
Dostoevsky s book is about the suffering Raskolnikov endures and how, through his pain, Raski is
able to achieve redemption. Among Dostoevsky s use of many techniques, his use of literary motifs,
and Christian allusions help to convey the importance of religion in redemption.
One major motif used by Dostoevsky was water. Historically, this has represented the purification of
sins and is a motif that is generally based in a religious way. Crime and Punishment exemplifies the
idea of water as a purifying substance, almost a sort of baptism. Water becomes important to note in
Part 2, specifically chapter 6. In this chapter, Raskolnikov witnesses a woman s attempt to take her life
by jumping off of a bridge and drowning in the water. She is eventually saved and Raskolnikov starts
thinking about suicide in the same way. It was disgusting to him. No, it s vile . . . the water . . . better
not (170). This thought shows Raskolnikov considering plunging himself into the river in response to
his crime. He is so caught up in the murder and the investigation that he considers ending his life.

Using Analytics More And More
The company I am with is beginning to use analytics more and more. We are on step 1 of the five step
process, so we still have a lot to learn and set goals on. We have just started using them so that we can
compete with the top dogs of the bank data processors. I believe that if we didn t use analytics one of
the big competitors would come in and try to buy out the company. We are looking into ways to help
use analytics so that we can strengthen our position in the service and show that we can handle any
size community bank. We have created a Business Intelligence department to look into ways that we
can improve products, forecast what a bank may buy when signing a contract, and to see how to pitch
our regulatory compliance products to other companies to help them with their compliance. We are
competing pretty well with the top 3 processors. We have been told that when they hear we are
negotiating to sign the same customer as them, they get worried. They know we have a rock solid
pitch and use analytics to back up our numbers along with testimonials from other customers how our
products have help them compete with the non community banks, retain customers, and bring in the
younger generation with the use of technology. Without analytics, I feel that we would not be able to
offer the banks what they need and sell our other products to help them maintain the needed guidelines
that keep changing.

Vladek Spiegelman
It is human nature to go through difficulties, they shape who we are as people for good or for bad. It is
not the challenges that shape who we are as people, but how we react and the lesson we take away
from our misfortunes. In the story of Maus 1 and 2, we can analyze Vladek Spiegelman and see how
his struggles have given us immense knowledge about humanity, and some of the flaws. In the stories
of Maus 1 and 2, Art Spiegelman uses Vladek s dialogue to show that humanity will judge and
deprecate no matter what.

How Did Napoleon Bonaparte Change
Napoleon has done a lot of work changing France. Napoleon has changed the military, the church,
education, and societies freedoms. Many people ask, which did he change or reform the most? Well,
Napoleon made more changes to the government than anything else. The government of France after
Napoleon was drastically different than before he gained control. The government went from a
monarchy to an empire and Napoleon ruled as the emperor. Napoleon made two parliaments, elected
officials, and on top of it all he kept himself from being removed. Education must have been important
in Napoleon s eyes because it was changed a lot also. Napoleon built an abundance of new schools for
boys called lycées intended for young men ages ten to sixteen. ... Show more content on

Napoleon s strategy was to control the bishops and if he controlled them he could control the church,
he did pick the bishops and had them approved by the pope. This may not seem like a major change
but it was important. This is one of the examples that shows how much control Napoleon had over
France. The French freedoms of society was one of the great changes that Napoleon was known for.
King Louis had absolute power and could not be removed, he had no national assembly or parliament.
Napoleon ruled as emperor and could not have his power taken away from him. Napoleon created two
national assembly or parliaments with members chosen by Napoleon, but from the candidates voted
on by the people. All men could vote, until 1804 when there were no more elections. All of the laws in
France were made by assemblies. French rights for society were changed a good bit by Napoleon. The
prison and court systems were officially different, in that you could only be put in prison after a trial
and a jail worthy charge, and everyone was officially equal. Nobles no longer had special rights that
others did not. But there were still restrictions under Napoleon s rule. Napoleon had a secret police
that could arrest people without a trial. Napoleon tried to censor and control the newspapers, and free
speech was not slowed in France or the French

The Socio Economic Status Affects Education
Proving students in our Nation with a better education can help save our children from the clutches of
poverty, crime, drugs, and hopelessness, and we help safeguard our Nation s prosperity for generations
yet unborn. Elijah Cummings. He makes a very extremely good point. Kids who receive a better
education rarely ever become poor, fall into crime or drugs. They learn exactly what they need to do to
become successful. Which is the main reason why when you look at kids who are poor they aren t
getting the smarted and neither are their parents. The socio economic status does impact education in
many ways if not in all ways. A lot of people would say that it has nothing to do with money and it all
depends on the person, but have you ever realized that people who live in Beverly Hills have a way
better education than someone in Philadelphia. What makes them so different? One thing and that s
money. Those parents are able to pay for their kids to have the best education out there. While some
families in Philadelphia can barely afford to feed their kids. Of course though that s not the only factor
when it comes to a kid who receives the better education. It also depends on how much the school
makes in terms of money and the teachers, because even if you re not poor or if you live in a bad area
then your kid could be receiving a bad education.

Book Report on Silent Spring
INTRODUCTION
In the book Silent spring written by Rachael Carson we find a picture of Carson s deep concept about
the connection between nature s equilibrium and the web of life that has been ruined by the
uncontrolled use of insecticides which in turn affected the healthy livelihood of this earth s creatures.
Furthermore, she tells the readers of substitute techniques of achieving the same ends. The title of the
book is enough to make us understand that it was a hint of a spring season with no bird songs painting
our atmosphere meaning that all birds had vanished due to misuse of pesticides.
DISCUSSION
The book starts with a story of a town in America. Carson explains the town as being very beautiful

She tries to get across the fact that the aerial spraying campaigns to kill the gypsy moth in the northern
states and the fire ant in the southern states were very much damaging, ineffective and also expensive.
This incident had a chain reaction resulting in crop failure, hurting wildlife and also cattle products
(such as milk) and vegetables were found having DDT and thus unhealthy for human consumption.
Carson lets us know that people are a victim to daily chemical poisoning in even minute doses. She
goes into the very details of domestic appliances and necessities. Carson talks about many things that
don t seem to be much of a danger on a daily basis to a regular person. Things such as bug sprays,
lotions, paints and varnishes, and even a pocket sized insecticide dispenser are brought up to help
demonstrate the everyday risks we encounter.
Only yesterday mankind lived in fear of the scourges of smallpox, cholera, and plague.............. Today
we are concerned with a different kind of hazard that lurks in our environment a hazard we ourselves
have introduced into our world as our modern way of life has evolved.
According to Carson we have given rise to a new range of health problems because the air we breathe,
the water we drink, the food we eat and everything else in our environment is polluted. As a result the

The Cost Of The Asset
Under generally accepted accounting principles, assets both tangible and certain intangible assets that
have an estimated useful life of more than one year but not infinitely should be allocated and
depreciated, amortized or depleted. The cost of the asset needs to be determined as well as any
possible salvage or resale value estimated. The total cost of an asset needs to not only include the
purchase price of the item but also sales taxes, installation costs, freight and interest (if applicable).
Costs currently or that are incurred in the future for maintenance and repairs is only an expense and
does not change the value of the asset. Basically, all costs that were necessary to allow the asset to
become useful should be capitalized. Depreciation, amortization and depletion are acceptable methods
used under U.S. GAAP to charge the cost of an asset used in a company s day to day operations to
expense over the periods benefited systematically. Depreciation refers to prorating tangible and
intangible asset s cost less any salvage value evenly over the useful life of the asset. For an item to be
considered an asset, it must intended for operations of the business and not for resale. Useful life
should be reasonable but can vary from one asset to another from one view point to another. Estimated
useful life is the time period in which an asset is expected to contribute to usefulness to a company.
Not all assets will have salvage value. With the exception of land, all assets are

The Bitch Manifesto By Joreen Freeman
Feminist Movements started long before 1960, with the advancement of women earning the right to
vote. However, it did not stop with that change. There were many other items that the women in
history hoped to change, not only to better their own lives, but also the women of the future. With the
use of many documents, such as flyers, letters, and boycotts, women of the past changed many
different aspects of life for women in the world today. Boycotting the Miss America Pageant in 1968
and 1969, circulating flyers around America, was just the beginning of this second movement. They
also used to write to convey their thoughts. One of which was titled The Bitch Manifesto and was
written in 1968 by Joreen Freeman. The second was a spin off from a children s book entitled There

As one of the key stable factors , culture within an organization is playing a critical role in the
organization s everyday operations. Although the culture literature has at times focused on the culture
of an organization as shared basic assumptions (Schein, 1985), or as metaphors within organizations

Whereas Hofstede (1984) wrote of the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the
members of one human group from another as the meaning of the term organizational culture, which
seems an interesting way of understanding the notion, and despite he discovered four areas of work
related value differences at that time (power distance; uncertainty avoidance;
individualism/collectivism; masculinity/femininity), however, in 1992, Hofstede used the term
practices to refer to social and cultural phenomena, and in Hofstede s perspective, it is quite important
to locate the deeply held values of organization members at the very center of the organization s
culture. In reality, for some organization members, these values will be so deeply held that they will
not be possible to change at all. However, how we choose to define culture has considerable
implications for how we attempt to examine and study it, different authorities in the literature has
introduced different interpretations. In practice, no matter what size or nature it is, an organization

This study was a seminal replication on attention blink similar to the one done by Raymond et al, in a
rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task. This study predicted that there would be a higher
accuracy for identifying the first target, T1 and lower accuracy for the second target, T2 depending on
the lag, given that T1 was accurately reported. 193 students participated in the experiment. This
experiment was a part of the course requirement. There was a stream of 19 letters, each lasting for 100
ms. The target letters, T1 and/or T2, to be identified were either a J or a K or both from the stream of
19 letters presented. In this study, a total of 60 trials were conducted for each participant. For T1, there
were 30 J and 30 K targets. T2 comprised of 24 J, 24 K and 12 null targets. The participants were
asked to decide whether they saw the letters J, K, both or neither following the RSVP stream. They
were asked to do so by using a button click mechanism. At the end of all the trials, the participants
were presented with a summary of their performance report. It was observed that the percentage of T1
reported does not vary significantly as a function of lag. Also, the percentage of T2 reported varied as
a function of lag. At greater lag positions, it was seen that the percentage of T2 reported goes above
that of T1.

The Use of Magical Realism in Laura Esquivel s Like Water...
Latin American literature is perhaps best known for its use of magical realism, a literary mode where
the fantastical is seamlessly blended with the ordinary, creating a sort of enhanced reality. Though
magical realism is practiced by authors from other cultures, the works of authors Salman Rushdie and
Toni Morrison, for example, are notable examples of non Latin works in which magical realism has
been used to both great effect and great celebration, it is in the works of Latin American authors where
the style has flourished and made its mark on the literary world. Yet even in Latin American works we
can find many different kinds of magical realism, all used to achieve a different end. In the works of

Esquivel s novel follows the tradition of magical realism in its purest form and creates a welcome
entry into the Latin American canon whereas Borges stories, most written more than forty years prior
to the publication of Esquivel s novel, use magical realism in a much more complex way and
ultimately forge a literary tradition of their own. From the very first page of Laura Esquivel s Like
Water for Chocolate it is clear that the real world in which her characters inhabit shall be greatly
exaggerated. When Esquivel s narrator describes Tita as being so sensitive to onions that when she
was still in my great grandmother s belly her sobs were so loud that even Nacha, the cook, who was
half deaf, could hear them easily. (Esquivel, p. 5) the reader encounters something at once refreshing,
as is always the case when one experiences the supernatural where least expected, and yet ancient at
the same time. While Esquivel could have attempted to tell her story, really the tale of a (mostly)
unrequited love, in a straightforward manner, the casual inclusion of the extraordinary places it
immediately in the tradition of magical realism. Esquivel s novel is awash in such images and these
might have been jarring to casual English readers had it not followed so closely in the tradition of
what is perhaps the most famous and most widely read work of magical realism, Gabriel Garcia
Marquez s 1967 novel One Hundred Years of Solitude. Esquivel s novel, like

handle administration. In order to get workers, Schindler and Stern compose a list of many Jews from
nearby Ghettos to come work at the factory. This inadvertently saves them from being sent to a
concentration camp run by Amon Göth (Ralph Fiennes). During the mass exodus of the Ghetto ...

Immediately Schindler races to the camp to save the Jews. Luckily, during a shower scene in the
movie, the gas never came out of the faucets, just water. Schindler arrives and then bribes the Nazi
officer in charge with a cache of diamonds, and receives control of the Jews he came for. After a small
altercation in which some of the officers tried to keep some children, the Jews were off to Schindler s
factory. After arriving at the factory, Schindler then imposes rules on the Nazi guards, including no
executions. The Soviet Army is approaching and since he is marked as a slave driver, Schindler must
flee. After telling his workers this, he is told that he is not a bad man in their eyes, and the heartful
quote of He who saves the life of one man, saves the world entire , Schindler dresses in the clothes of
a Polish refugee and leaves. The Jews are awoken by the liberation of the soviet army in the morning

Survival of the Marine Corps
SURVIVAL OF THE MARINE CORPS The Marine Corps historical characteristics after the Civil
War could be based in part on survivability and the need for the Marine Corps to prove its worth to the
United States as a Military Force. The Marine Corps part in the Civil War had been small and not
altogether impressive. Both the Army and the Navy did not regard the Marine Corps as useful. This
paper will in effect touch on the Marine Corps history from after the Civil War to World War I. It will
then converge on a discussion with regards to the fight against the disestablishment of the Marine
Corps. (Simmons/Moskin 1998) The Marine Corps found its mission in the amphibious landings of
several countries to protect American lives and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many official German reports had called the attacking Marines teufel hunden, meaning Devil Dogs.
These beasts were the ferocious mountain dogs of Bavarian folklore. (Sturkey 2003) Soon afterward a
U.S. Marine Recruiting Poster depicted a snarling English Bulldog wearing a Marine Corps helmet.
Because of the tenacity and demeanor of the breed, the image took root with both the Marines and the
public. The Marines soon unofficially adopted the English Bulldog as their mascot. (Sturkey 2003)
Although the Marine Corps has established itself as a premier fighting force, there were still rumbles
among officials. The original culprits of the war against the Marines were the senior officers in the US
Army. This started immediately after WW I. During the build up for WW II Army General George C.
Marshall was quoted as saying that his job was to keep the Marine Corps, small, very small. General
Dwight D. Eisenhower was quoted as making similar comments. They were not the only ones.
(wanaki@infi.net Online) Both the Army and Army Air Force were making plans as early as 1943 to
gut the Marines. Marine Lieutenant Colonel Merrill Twining was visiting his brother, Brigadier
General Nathan Twining during that year and he was flabbergasted to learn that the Army officers
there were outwardly proclaiming that they weren t going to allow the Marines to command any Corps
sized units. Admirals Halsey and Nimitz made short shrift

Essay on When To Start School in North Dakota, August or...
Many adolescents that live in North Dakota know the feeling of having to sit in school in August,
when the weather is perfect for days on the lake or other activities. A majority of them are asking why
they have to be in school during this time, when states such as Minnesota are still on break until
September. To fix this inconvenience along with other frustrations would be to start the school year
after Labor Day in September. To fix the predicament first people should know why starting school
early is a problem, then have a clear solution to this problem, and finally know why other solutions
that have been offered to compensate are not as favorable. First of all, many people don t find starting
school in August a problem. However, there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another disadvantage of starting early is because of students trying to get used to the school schedule.
Between the date when school starts and Labor day there is only about one week of school which
means students have to get used to getting up early, but then are given a three day weekend which
tends to make them go back to their summer schedule. This indicates that the first week of school is
not a constructive way to get kids back on schedule. Starting school at the beginning of September is a
great way to fix all of the problems. Beginning school after Labor Day will be beneficial to businesses
because they will be able to keep their young employees during the busy weekend of Labor Day. More
people will be able to go on vacation which means hotels and other attractions will get a lot of
business as well. The school will also be saving money by reducing the use of air conditioning as well.
Although there are some disadvantages to starting school in September. One of them includes the
scheduling of Christmas vacation, semester tests, and the beginning of fall sports. However, the
positives of choosing to start in September outweigh the negatives since they could easily be fixes by
precise scheduling. Other solutions have been provided to make up for the early start of school. One of
these include that the semester ends with a winter break and the option of being able to have semester
tests

Immanuel Kant On Moral Education
Paper One: Kant on Moral Education
Jennifer Penkov: 1345217
Phil 444, Dr Alan McLuckie
Friday, February 12, 2016
Word Count: 1, 567 This paper will focus on Kant s account of a moral education as found in his
Lectures on Pedagogy. It will begin by discussing why Kant believed that education, specifically
moral education, is necessary for a human being to realize her Bestimmung (destiny), but not
necessary for non rational animals to reach their natural vocations. It will analyze the role a moral
education (the general development of morality) plays in becoming human and will continue by
outlining the structure and key points of Kant s hypothetical moral educational system. Finally this
paper will highlight possible conflict between education and autonomy (a concept vital to his broader
moral philosophy) but will ultimately argue that moral education is compatible with the notion of the
intelligible self. Kant makes it explicit in his work that the human being is the only creature that
requires education to reach its natural destiny. In order to fully make sense of this notion, it is first
necessary to briefly discuss the twofold nature of the human self as explained in Critique of Pure
Reason and developed in Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals. The human being is thought of
as participating in both the empirical and intelligible realms. The empirical self is sensual and
determined, in that it participates in the natural world and is governed by the laws of nature

Morrison Distortion
Morrison captivates the audience and communicates the enduring effects of slavery on the African
American community through the distortion of time through the constantly changing setting.
Throughout the novel, Morrison constantly changes the setting and alters the natural order of time.
When Paul D first arrives at 124, Sethe says to Paul D, You can t leave right away Paul D. (Morrison
8) Reminding Sethe of the past, Paul D replies, Well, long enough to see Baby Suggs, anyway. Where
is she? (Morrison 8) Answering Paul D s question, Sethe replies, Dead. (Morrison 8) After Paul D
enters 124, he immediately reminds Sethe of the fact that Baby Suggs died and their past as slaves.
And as a result, Morrison interests and confuses the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of the novel, Beloved is a character that appears one day resting on a tree trunk and is
seemingly without a backstory. It becomes apparent that Beloved is in fact the spirit of one of Sethe s
dead children because Morrison writes, But once Sethe had seen the scar...Sethe played all the harder
with Beloved, who never got enough of anything: lullabies, new stitches, the bottom of the cake
bowl... (Morrison 282). Sethe realizes that Beloved is the reincarnation of daughter because the scar
that Beloved has is the result of Sethe killing her children. Furthermore, Sethe spoils Beloved with as
much motherly love as possible in order to make up for killing her. Therefore, Beloved personifies the
past because she is the literal embodiment of Sethe s daughter s spirit coming to life. However, not
only does Beloved embody the spirit of Sethe s dead child Beloved also embodies the psychological
trauma of Sethe s past because if it were not for slavery then Sethe would not have to kill her child and
experience the vengeful spirit known as Beloved. Therefore, Beloved is a constant reminder to Sethe
of Sweet Home s atrocities. Morrison uses the revival of the past through Beloved in order to
comment on the enduring effects of slavery because Morrison suggests that those who have been
affected by slavery will forever be haunted by their captivity. Furthermore, this

Jeff Koons Analysis
Jeff Koons s Easyfun Ethereal series is a collection of seven paintings commissioned for the Deutsche
Guggenheim museum in Berlin and now on view at Gagosian gallery. The collection of paintings later
evolved into twenty four distinctive paintings. Koons utilized many images from magazines,
combined with his compelling backgrounds and varying curves. His paintings includes everyday
objects, female clothing, and many desserts to communicate with any culture or society. Koons s
Easyfun Ethereal series bridges the gap between sensualism, fun, and art by disguising each painting
with delicious foods, everyday objects, and women s body parts to create sexual references. Koons
makes his statement regarding his upcoming exhibition, My Easyfun Ethereal ... Show more content

In his piece, Bluepoles, he makes a direct reference to Jackson Pollock s Blue Poles (1952), with blue
roller coaster poles. Koons paints an amusement park layered above a beach. The background is
covered with buttermilk pancakes while the foreground contains four figures in costumes, having
Cheerios replace their faces. Koons s Bluepoles was intended for his works to be fun and enjoyable, as
Jackson Pollock wanted his artwork to be enjoyable as well. Koons involves the past and present,
using digital technology to create historical references in favors of abstract expressionism and pop art.
Not only does Koons s painting include historical references, but his paintings consists of hidden
sexual references that hides in plain sight. In Koons s, Junkyard, he creates a compelling painting,
revealing the female genitalia. A set of blonde hair flow above pea pods, and a chain link fence stacks
on top of each other, layering above the fishnet stocking legs, silhouette cuttings, and junkyard
background. The title, Junkyard, could suggest Koons s exploration between feminism, poverty, and
sex. Some females that live in poverty are forced to work as a

Head Start Essay example Head Start Head Start and Early Head Start are comprehensive child development programs which serve children from birth to age five, pregnant woman and their extended families. They are child focused programs that have the overall goal of increasing the school readiness of young children in low income families. . These programs try to prepare young children intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically for their future educational and social endeavors. ( U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2002).. The programs prepare the parent(s) to be supportive in the endeavor. Guidelines and new standards were set nationwide. The legislation focused on infants and toddlers and their families as well as quality services for children. Memphis International Airport ( Mem ) The following paper explores how Memphis International Airport (MEM), the world s second busiest cargo shipping airport, handles its day to day operations involving passenger airlines in conjunction with FedEx commercial shipping. By comparing DOT and FAA reports, along with the airlines and FedEx s shipping statistics, an airport capacity and congestion problem is disproved. Since Delta closed down their MEM hub, passenger air travel has dramatically decreased while cargo shipping has continued to steadily climb. Other airlines have started offering services in and out of MEM but were only able to increase passenger travel by 1%, in 2014. The different operating schedules of passenger and cargo shipping, allow for each of them to conduct their flights without hindering the operations of the other. • 6. What Is The Myth Of The Underground Railroad The Underground Railroad is a popular topic in United States history, but many of the stories told about it are more myth than fact. Quilts have been often used as a symbol in children s picture books to further the understanding of one of the darkest periods of United States history: slavery. Parents and teachers have eagerly embraced these illustrated books as a way to understand and teach past turmoil. Many of these books suggest that people who participated in the Underground Railroad used quilts as a means of communication to help slaves safely escape to freedom. The idea of quilts as communication tools has been well received, and many educators have created wonderful programs, guides, and lesson plans to extend the experience with these books and to further explore United States history; however, what is depicted in these books have been consistently contested by quilt historians and folklorists This essay discusses the myth that secret codes were stitched into quilts to help slaves escape to freedom and why this myth continues today. After the Civil War, an explosion of published information in the form of diaries, letters, and autobiographies like Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, written in 1861 by literate slave Harriet Jacobs and William Still s 1871 The Underground Railroad, detailed the abuses of slavery ( Harriet A. Essay The Death of Socrates The Death of Socrates Viewing the painting The Death of Socrates by Jacques Louis David, one can perceive many different subject matters, both literally and metaphorically. The obvious is seen within the setting of the painting. The clear illustration of where the event is happening provides the onlooker with a glimpse into a different time and era. Conversely, the artist has taken the liberty to hide deep meaning inside the work of art through less apparent means. Symbolism through art work has endured from early works to contemporized ones, here is no different. Furthermore, to give Socrates an air of wisdom, he was given a beard. The beard which is representative of knowledge and intelligence flows freely upon the great teacher as his time of execution approaches. While appearing to have the divinity of a god, Socrates is still painted with physical emotion. The duality of being godly and human at the same time may have been a recurring theme at the time this was painted. Not only looking at the mere representation of the figure who is Socrates, but by examining how he is situated among others in the painting also uncovers meaning in of itself. Studying the way that Socrates body is situated you can see that the artist is trying to make a statement of nobility in self sacrifice. • 9. Herodotus And Vespucci Essay But while Herodotus and Vespucci use similar strategies in evoking the marvels of the far reaches of the world, what of the darker shadows on the edge? Both authors do claim that monstrous things can hide on the fringes of maps, and as Grafton points out, Vespucci s descriptions of his monsters often echo older texts like the Histories. For example, both Europeans of Vespucci s day and Herodotus s Greeks loathed cannibalism, so cannibals serve as appropriate menaces for the reader seeking knowledge about the world s farther regions. In his Histories, Herodotus writes that a people called the Padaei have a custom that when a man falls sick, his closest companions kill him because, as they put it, their meat would be spoiled if he were ... In his letters, the cannibals seem the most monstrous in actions, but they do not appear physically abnormal to Vespucci s eyes as a dog headed man would be to Herodotus or the Libyans. Vespucci characterizes the peoples of the New World, cannibals included, as having big, solid and well proportioned bodies , a far cry from having eyes in the chest (48). While other tribes not mentioned as practicing cannibalism attack Vespucci, he describes the tribe of cannibals as being of a quite courteous disposition and fine stature , noting that they do not devour their own people or women in stark contrast to Herodotus s own cannibals (Vespucci 9). As a result, in Vespucci s work, select actions create monsters, not immutable physical qualities. While a nuanced difference, it proves vital one when considering where the authors sit in history. Herodotus s Greece did not seek widespread colonization of the lands where dog headed peoples reside, and so Herodotus may leave his monsters to the mists of rumor. Vespucci, however, resides at the forefront of a wave of conquest that eventually reshapes both the New and Old Worlds irrevocably. Tractors had just graced the U.S. markets which boosted the production of goods greatly. Most would think this was good, but it was more of a problem, the farmers would overproduce goods without enough people to buy them all which made the goods almost worthless. The farmers had to borrow money to pay for their tractors, assuming they would be able to pay back the debt with the money that the tractor made, but when they found they could not it set them up having no money and a debt with no way to pay it back. The delegates meeting at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787 were given consent to alter and revise the Articles of Confederation. Paterson declared imbalance of the rights of the small states against the large states and wished to expand upon the Articles making a more representative and all around well organized government. Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, (Raski), is a man with many flaws. By the end of part one, he had already murdered two women, a pawnbroker, and her friend. This act is very important for it sets the tone for the rest of the plot. The majority of Dostoevsky s book is about the suffering Raskolnikov endures and how, through his pain, Raski is able to achieve redemption. Among Dostoevsky s use of many techniques, his use of literary motifs, and Christian allusions help to convey the importance of religion in redemption. One major motif used by Dostoevsky was water. Historically, this has represented the purification of sins and is a motif that is generally based in a religious way. Crime and Punishment exemplifies the idea of water as a purifying substance, almost a sort of baptism. Water becomes important to note in Part 2, specifically chapter 6. In this chapter, Raskolnikov witnesses a woman s attempt to take her life by jumping off of a bridge and drowning in the water. She is eventually saved and Raskolnikov starts thinking about suicide in the same way. It was disgusting to him. No, it s vile . . . the water . . . better not (170). • 33. The Cost Of The Asset Under generally accepted accounting principles, assets both tangible and certain intangible assets that have an estimated useful life of more than one year but not infinitely should be allocated and depreciated, amortized or depleted. The cost of the asset needs to be determined as well as any possible salvage or resale value estimated. The total cost of an asset needs to not only include the purchase price of the item but also sales taxes, installation costs, freight and interest (if applicable). Costs currently or that are incurred in the future for maintenance and repairs is only an expense and does not change the value of the asset. Basically, all costs that were necessary to allow the asset to become useful should be capitalized. Depreciation, amortization and depletion are acceptable methods used under U.S. GAAP to charge the cost of an asset used in a company s day to day operations to expense over the periods benefited systematically. Depreciation refers to prorating tangible and intangible asset s cost less any salvage value evenly over the useful life of the asset. For an item to be considered an asset, it must intended for operations of the business and not for resale. This study predicted that there would be a higher accuracy for identifying the first target, T1 and lower accuracy for the second target, T2 depending on the lag, given that T1 was accurately reported. 193 students participated in the experiment. This experiment was a part of the course requirement. There was a stream of 19 letters, each lasting for 100 ms. The target letters, T1 and/or T2, to be identified were either a J or a K or both from the stream of 19 letters presented. In this study, a total of 60 trials were conducted for each participant. For T1, there were 30 J and 30 K targets. T2 comprised of 24 J, 24 K and 12 null targets. The participants were asked to decide whether they saw the letters J, K, both or neither following the RSVP stream. They were asked to do so by using a button click mechanism. At the end of all the trials, the participants were presented with a summary of their performance report. It was observed that the percentage of T1 reported does not vary significantly as a function of lag. Also, the percentage of T2 reported varied as a function of lag. Latin American literature is perhaps best known for its use of magical realism, a literary mode where the fantastical is seamlessly blended with the ordinary, creating a sort of enhanced reality. Though magical realism is practiced by authors from other cultures, the works of authors Salman Rushdie and Toni Morrison, for example, are notable examples of non Latin works in which magical realism has been used to both great effect and great celebration, it is in the works of Latin American authors where the style has flourished and made its mark on the literary world. Esquivel s novel follows the tradition of magical realism in its purest form and creates a welcome entry into the Latin American canon whereas Borges stories, most written more than forty years prior to the publication of Esquivel s novel, use magical realism in a much more complex way and ultimately forge a literary tradition of their own. From the very first page of Laura Esquivel s Like Water for Chocolate it is clear that the real world in which her characters inhabit shall be greatly exaggerated. When Esquivel s narrator describes Tita as being so sensitive to onions that when she was still in my great grandmother s belly her sobs were so loud that even Nacha, the cook, who was half deaf, could hear them easily. (Esquivel, p. 5) the reader encounters something at once refreshing, as is always the case when one experiences the supernatural where least expected, and yet ancient at the same time. While Esquivel could have attempted to tell her story, really the tale of a (mostly) unrequited love, in a straightforward manner, the casual inclusion of the extraordinary places it immediately in the tradition of magical realism. Esquivel s novel is awash in such images and these might have been jarring to casual English readers had it not followed so closely in the tradition of what is perhaps the most famous and most widely read work of magical realism, Gabriel Garcia Marquez s 1967 novel One Hundred Years of Solitude. Immanuel Kant On Moral Education Paper One: Kant on Moral Education Jennifer Penkov: 1345217 Phil 444, Dr Alan McLuckie Friday, February 12, 2016 Word Count: 1, 567 This paper will focus on Kant s account of a moral education as found in his Lectures on Pedagogy. It will begin by discussing why Kant believed that education, specifically moral education, is necessary for a human being to realize her Bestimmung (destiny), but not necessary for non rational animals to reach their natural vocations. It will analyze the role a moral education (the general development of morality) plays in becoming human and will continue by outlining the structure and key points of Kant s hypothetical moral educational system. Finally this paper will highlight possible conflict between education and autonomy (a concept vital to his broader moral philosophy) but will ultimately argue that moral education is compatible with the notion of the intelligible self. Kant makes it explicit in his work that the human being is the only creature that requires education to reach its natural destiny. In order to fully make sense of this notion, it is first necessary to briefly discuss the twofold nature of the human self as explained in Critique of Pure Reason and developed in Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals. The human being is thought of as participating in both the empirical and intelligible realms. The empirical self is sensual and determined, in that it participates in the natural world and is governed by the laws of nature ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
