- Ravi Kant presented a training seminar on thermal power plants to electrical engineering students. - The presentation covered the basics of electrical generation and the components and processes involved in a thermal power plant. - A thermal power plant works by burning coal to create steam, which spins turbines that drive generators to produce electricity. The presentation discussed the site selection, mechanical design like the boiler, and electrical components like the alternator and transformers.

Stations.
• Thermal power plant converts the heat energy of coal in to
electrical energy.
• Coal is burnt in a boiler which convert water in to steam.
• The expansion of steam in turbine produces mechanical power
which drives the alternator coupled to the turbine.
• In thermal generating stations coal, oil, natural gas etc. are
employed as primary sources of energy.

 Now that pulverized coal is put in boiler furnace. Boiler is an
enclosed vessel in which water is heated and circulated until
the water is turned in to steam at the required pressure.

• A 80MW plant may required
around 1000 tons of coal daily.

• The function of Ash handling plant is
automatic handle of coal ash out from the
boiler furnace.

16. Alternator:
In thermal power plants ,several generating units are used to
increase the total capacity of the plant.
Transformer:
A generating station has different types of transformers which
are as follows.
{i} main step-up transformer which step-up the generation voltage
for transmission of power.
{ii} station transformers which are used for general service in the
power station.
