Thematic analysis is a technique of data analysis while conducting a qualitative study. Thematic analysis is the most recognized, adapted, and used approach to analyze qualitative data.
This video is made as per the illustrations and procedures explained in the Braun and Clarke (2006) research article on Thematic Analysis.
Have you just conducted a qualitative study involving:
Interviews
Focus Groups
Observations
Document or artifact analysis
Journal notes or reflections?
How to use this type of data?
Just as there are numerous statistical tests to run for quantitative data, there are just as many options for qualitative data analysis.
THEMATIC APPROACH
Most common forms of analysis in qualitative research. It emphasizes Pinpointing, Examining, Recording
Patterns (or "themes") within data.
Themes are patterns across data sets that are important to the description of a phenomenon and are associated to a specific research question.
Themes become categories for analysis
6 Phases of Coding
(Thematic Analysis)
1-Familiarization with data
2-Generating initial codes
3-Searching for themes among codes
4-Reviewing themes
5-Defining and naming themes
6-Producing the final report

Thematic analysis is a poorly demarcated, rarely-acknowledged, yet widely-used qualitative analytic method within psychology. In this paper, we argue that it offers an accessible and theoretically-flexible approach to analysing qualitative data. We outline what thematic analysis is, locating it in relation to other qualitative analytic methods that search for themes or patterns, and in relation to different epistemological and ontological positions. We then provide clear guidelines to those wanting to start thematic analysis, or conduct it in a more deliberate and rigorous way, and consider potential pitfalls in conducting thematic analysis. Finally, we outline the disadvantages and advantages of thematic analysis. We conclude by advocating thematic analysis as a useful and flexible method for qualitative research in and beyond psychology.

Introduction to quantitative and qualitative researchLiz FitzGerald
This presentation, delivered in an Open University CALRG Building Knowledge session, gives a preliminary introduction to both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. There has been widespread debate when considering the relative merits of quantitative and qualitative strategies for research. Positions taken by individual researchers vary considerably, from those who see the two strategies as entirely separate, polar opposites that are based upon alternative views of the world, to those who are happy to mix these strategies within their research projects. We consider the different strengths, weaknesses and suitability of different approaches and draw upon some examples to highlight their use within educational technology.

Introduction
In life, there are universal laws that govern everything we do. These laws are so perfect that if you were to align yourself with them, you could have so much prosperity that it would be coming out of your ears. This is because God created the universe in the image and likeness of him. It is failure to follow the universal laws that causes one to fail. The laws that were created consisted of the following: ·
Law of Gratitude: The Law of Gratitude states that you must show gratitude for what you have. By having gratitude, you speed your growth and success faster than you normally would. This is because if you appreciate the things you have, even if they are small things, you are open to receiving more.
Law of Attraction: The Law of Attraction states that if you focus your attention on something long enough you will get it. It all starts in the mind. You think of something and when you think of it, you manifest that in your life. This could be a mental picture of a check or actual cash, but you think about it with an image.
Law of Karma: the Law of Karma states that if you go out and do something bad, it will come back to you with something bad. If you do well for others, good things happen to you. The principle here is to know you can create good or bad through your actions. There will always be an effect no matter what.
Law of Love: the Law of Love states that love is more than emotion or feeling; it is energy. It has substance and can be felt. Love is also considered acceptance of oneself or others. This means that no matter what you do in life if you do not approach or leave the situation out of love, it won't work.
Law of Allowing: The Law of Allowing states that for us to get what we want, we must be receptive to it. We can't merely say to the Universe that we want something if we don't allow ourselves to receive it. This will defeat our purpose for wanting it in the first place.
Law of Vibration: the Law of Vibration states that if you wish on something and use your thoughts to visualize it, you are halfway there to get it. To complete the cycle you must use the Law of Vibration to feel part of what you want. Do this and you'll have anything you want in life.
For everything to function properly there has to be structure. Without structure, our world, or universe, would be in utter chaos. Successful people understand universal laws and apply them daily. They may not acknowledge that to you, but they do follow the laws. There is a higher power and this higher power controls the universe and what we get out of it. People who know this, but wish to direct their own lives, follow the reasons. Successful people don't sit around and say "I'll try," they say yes and act on it.
Chapter - 1
The Law of Attraction
The law of attraction is the most powerful force in the universe. If you work against it, it can only bring you pain and misery. Successful people know this but have kept it hidden from the lower class for centuries because th
How to develop and manage a case study database as suggested by Yin (2009) wi...stefanie ng
Abstract
This presentation aims at providing useful knowledge and skills which can help doctoral students from different disciplines in doing research which inevitably involves time, energy and cost in data collection and handling of different types of qualitative and quantitative data gathered from various data sources by using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. The process of researching becomes more complex when the researcher decides to adopt a mixed methods design for his/her research study because both qualitative and quantitative research methodological approaches to inquiry are involved in the entire researching process either sequentially or concurrently in data collection, data storage, data retrieval, data examination, data processing, data analysis, interpretation, and reporting of results in the academic piece of work known as a thesis or dissertation. This presentation provides ideas and suggests the necessary steps to take so that a case study database can be developed comprehensively and managed efficiently.

Every researcher is a cyborg! Academic researchers engage various sorts of research in vitro (in the glass) and in vivo (in the living body), or they engage in experimental laboratory work and analyze data in natural in-world experiments. In between, many conduct surveys, focus groups, interviews, and other types of research work. In the computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) space, NVivo is one of the foremost tools, enabling the creation of manual codebooks, multimedia analysis, and various forms of “auto” or unsupervised machine learning. NVivo works as a “database” for structured and unstructured data (multimedia). It enables the drawing of content from various social media sites. Technologies augment human analytical capabilities, in the qualitative and quantitative research spaces. This presentation demonstrates some of the capabilities of NVivo. This also addresses how a researcher is changed by the computational capabilities they harness.

of a phenomenon and are associated
to a specific research question.

9. Let’s suppose you’ve interviewed
10 to 12 participants and
gathered data in the form of
keynotes and Audio Recordings
INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PUNJAB. 9
10. TRANSCRIPTION
Many qualitative studies collect
audio or video data (e.g.
recordings of interviews, focus
groups or talk in consultation),
and these are
usually transcribed into written
form for closer study
INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PUNJAB. 10
12. TRANSCRIPTION
After data collection, the researcher needs to begin
copying the data into written form. It involves:
Quickly Browse through all records, as a whole
Make notes about your first impression
Read the transcripts again, one by one
Read vary carefully, line by line
INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PUNJAB. 12
13. Coding
Coding is an analytical process in
which data sets are categorized to
facilitate analysis.
“Coding is used to identify Themes”
INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PUNJAB. 13
14. Think of managing your qualitative analysis
process like cleaning your closets – the same basic
steps apply!
LIKE CLEANING A CLOSET
INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PUNJAB. 14
15. Take everything out of the closet
Sort everything, Keep or free
Organize leftovers it into sub-groups (chunking)
Organize sub-groups into clusters of similar things
that belong together (codes)
As you put things back, how would you group them
to maximize functionality? (interpretation,
presentation)
It’s the same process…
INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PUNJAB. 15
16. PHASES
Psychologists Virginia Braun and Victoria Clarke developed this approach
performed through the process of coding in six phases to create
established, meaningful patterns. These phases are:
1. Familiarization with data
2. Generating initial codes
3. Searching for themes among codes
4. Reviewing themes
5. Defining and naming themes
6. Producing the final report
INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PUNJAB. 16
22. How to do this:
Label relevant words
Stay close to transcription
The data which is most relevant. It can be :
Repeated several times.
It surprises you
It explicitly states that it is important
It reminds you of a theory or concept
It is related to published reports
Create categories by bringing several codes together.
INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PUNJAB. 22
23. Data Reduction
Reduce data to classes or categories in which the researcher is
able to identify segments of the data that share a common
category or code.
Siedel and Kelle (1995) suggest three ways to aid with the
process of data reduction and coding:
(a) Noticing relevant phenomena
(b) Collecting examples of the phenomena
(c) Analyzing phenomena to find similarities,
differences, patterns and overlying structures.
INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PUNJAB. 23
24. Data Complication
Going beyond the data
Create new interpretations
Finding hidden Patterns
INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PUNJAB. 24
28. 3. Searching for themes
In this phase, it is important to begin by examining
how codes combine to form over-reaching themes
in the data. At this point, researchers have a list of
themes and begin to focus on broader patterns in
the data, combining coded data with proposed
themes. Researchers also begin considering how
relationships are formed between codes and themes
and between different levels of existing themes.
INSTITUTE OF ADMINISTRATIVE SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF PUNJAB. 28

31. Producing the report
After final themes have been reviewed, researchers
begin the process of writing the final report. While
writing the final report, researchers should decide
on themes that make meaningful contributions to
answering research questions which should be
refined later as final themes.
