People living in Western societies are facing many events and situations, which can be described as a risk. However, according to Ulrich Beck (1992), in a modern society, risk has different qualities than it had before. Moreover, Anthony Giddens (1992) concludes that in the modern world, we have to trust abstract systems such as science or politics. People in Western societies are not being threatened by wild animals or hunger anymore, but by dangers they hear about in the media, which are usually described or even created by those abstract systems. In this paper, I try to point out that living in the risk society era leads, especially among young people, to a quite understandable reaction; they try to find a consolation in saving their certainties and memories into digital photographs and sharing them via social networks (Sarvas & Frohlich 2011), in our paper we are mainly focusing on photographic social network Instagram. It is the photograph that plays a crucial role in shaping the awareness of one's own memory, identity, and belonging to a community. Through photographs, on the one hand, we perceive the world and store our individual (Van Dijck 2005) as well as our collective memory (Pink 2011). On the other hand, photographs serve as a means of self-expression (Tinkler 2008). Moreover, today's time is greatly fragmented, discontinuous, and episodic, which, on the other hand, leads human individuals to constantly legitimize themselves as unique and authentic individuals (Bauman 2002). This is happening in a highly fragmented environment of the internet where audiences are formed on the basis of similar interests, tastes, subculture or ethnic group identification (Carey 1993). Furthermore, this constant visual communication requires a continual adaptation to the media messages, which puts an increased emphasis on visual literacy as a part of educational process. In short, the main goal of this contribution is to introduce an analysis of several significant digital photographs shared recently via visual social networks, highlight some of the discursive strategies encrypted in them and, as a result, offer visual literacy as a challenge for temporary education.

In this paper I address the question of how to study media and social change ethnographically. To do so I draw from the relevant media anthropology literature, including my own research in Malaysia and Spain. I first sketch a history of media anthropology, identifying a number of key works and themes as well as two main phases of growth since the 1980s. I then argue that anthropologists are well positioned to contribute to the interdisciplinary study of media and social change. However, to do so we must first shift our current focus on media and ‘social changing’ (i.e. how things are changing) to the study of media in relation to actual social changes, e.g. the suburbanisation of Kuala Lumpur in the 1970s to 2000s, or the secularisation of morality in post-Franco Spain. This shift from the ethnographic present continuous to the ethnogrhttp://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/13652836?hostedIn=slideshare&page=upload#aphic past tense – a move from potential to actual changes – does not require that we abandon our commitment to ethnography in favour of social history. Rather, it demands new forms of ‘diachronic ethnography’ that can handle the processual, finite logic of actual social changes.

Citizen journalists in L'Aquila, Italy used social media and blogs to provide alternative coverage of the 2009 earthquake, documenting their daily lives and sharing unreported stories with their community. They were motivated by the distorted mainstream media coverage, a desire to reconnect socially after the disaster, and a need to spread real information and give voice to local perspectives. Digital technologies empowered ordinary citizens to produce independent and democratic reporting from the ground.

Abstract: The term “neoliberalism” has come to be used in a wide variety of partly overlapping
and partly contradictory ways. This essay seeks to clarify some of the analytical and political
work that the term does in its different usages. It then goes on to suggest that making an analytical
distinction between neoliberal “arts of government” and the class-based ideological “project”
of neoliberalism can allow us to identify some surprising (and perhaps hopeful) new forms of
politics that illustrate how fundamentally polyvalent neoliberal mechanisms of government can
be. A range of empirical examples are discussed, mostly coming from my recent work on social
policy and anti-poverty politics in southern Africa.

In thinking about the rapidly expanding literature on neoliberalism, I
am struck by how much of the critical scholarship on topic arrives
in the end at the very same conclusion—a conclusion that might be
expressed in its simplest form as: “neoliberalism is bad for poor and
working people, therefore we must oppose it.” It is not that I disagree
with this conclusion. On the contrary. But I sometimes wonder why I
should bother to read one after another extended scholarly analysis only
to reach, again and again, such an unsurprising conclusion.
This problem in recent progressive scholarship strikes me as related
to a parallel problem in progressive politics more broadly. For over
the last couple of decades, what we call “the Left” has come to be
organized, in large part, around a project of resisting and refusing
harmful new developments in the world. This is understandable, since
so many new developments have indeed been highly objectionable. But
it has left us with a politics largely defined by negation and disdain,
and centered on what I will call “the antis.” Anti-globalization, anti-
neoliberalism, anti-privatization, anti-imperialism, anti-Bush, perhaps
even anti-capitalism—but always “anti”, not “pro”. This is good enough,
perhaps, if one’s political goal is simply to denounce “the system” and to
decry its current tendencies. And, indeed, some seem satisfied with such
a politics. In my own disciplines of anthropology and African Studies,
for instance, studies of state and development tend, with depressing
predictability, to conclude (in tones of righteous indignation) that the
rich are benefiting and the poor are getting screwed. The powerless,
it seems, are getting the short end of the stick. This is not exactly a

La ricerca Informazione e patrimonio culturale dell’Osservatorio News-Italia (news-italia.it) del LaRiCA dell’Università di Urbino Carlo Bo monitora dal 2014 la fruizione dell’informazione culturale degli italiani. La rilevazione 2017 si è proposta di osservare il consumo di informazione sui musei italiani e le attività e modalità di comunicazione da questi adottate, ed è stata articolata in due fasi, una quantitativa e una qualitativa:
1) interviste telefoniche da fisso (CATI) e mobile (CAMI), somministrate a un campione rappresentativo di cittadini italiani adulti (1007);
2) interviste in profondità a figure-chiave che si occupano di comunicazione in 10 musei italiani selezionati.

- Principali risultati –
[1] La diffusione di internet come mezzo di informazione in Italia è seconda solo a quella della TV;
[2] Gran parte dell’informazione digitale viene ormai fruita attraverso smartphone e tablet;
[3] Anche la TV non è più la stessa. Sta rapidamente cambiando il modo di guardarla (schermi e pratiche) e di scegliere programmi;
[4] In questo nuovo contesto prospera la narrazione seriale, ma i gusti del pubblico sono fortemente differenziati in base all’età.

My experiences with Twitter Social TV so far
1. The study analyzed over 8,000 tweets related to conversations around 11 Italian political talk shows during the 2012-2013 permanent campaign period;
2. It found that the number of active contributors to these conversations, averaging around 28,000 per day, was significantly higher than the TV audiences for the shows but much lower than Twitter users in Italy;
3. Politicians, show hosts, and non-political guests all participated in the online conversations to varying degrees depending on the party discussed in the show;
4. The form of participation, whether oriented towards the media or politics, differed based on the party talked about, with discussions on shows featuring the PD exhibiting more political participation and those on PDL shows exhibiting

The public by default nature of Twitter messages, together with the adoption of the #hashtag convention, led during the last few years to the creation of a digital space able to host world-wide conversation on almost every kind of topic (Bruns, 2011; Honeycutt & Herring, 2009; Huberman, Romero, & Wu, 2009; Marwick & boyd, 2010). Beside the adoption of hashtag based conversations as a way to deal with crisis and natural disasters, this practices has been largely adopted as an effective way to share the experience of watching television. So far research on this phenomenon has been focused mainly on large media events (Dayan & Katz, 1994) where Twitter participation occurred as part of the media experience of a single and unique event (Rossi, Magnani, & Iadarola, 2011). These topical discussions take place outside of the standard Twitter network made of follower and followee and represent one of the most interesting recent examples of social shaping of digital media. Hashtag conversations, as well as the idea of the hashtag itself, do not come, in fact, with Twitter’s original feature but instead exploit available affordances of the media (Bruns, 2011; Tumasjan, Sprenger, Sandner, & Welpe, 2010).
This paper bring a substantial contribution to the understanding of how Twitter users’ real practices can reshape the experience of contemporary television by focusing on the study of an appointment based TV show: Servizio Pubblico. Servizio Pubblico is a political talk show aired weekly starting from November 3rd 2011 simultaneously, both on Pay-TV, a large number of local broadcasters and streamed online live on several websites. This peculiar airing/streaming strategy, as well as the more traditional weekly appointment schedule, represents an unexplored scenario for Twitter based studies.
The paper will focus on the following research questions:
RQ1. Is the Twitter conversation network of Servizio Pubblico changing over the several weeks of the show airing? Is it possible to identify a definite set of participants or are they changing every week?
RQ2. Is the conversation mainly made of comments on what is happening in the show or the topic addressed by the TV show actually ignite some debate?
RQ3. Can the Twitter activity be considered as a good indicator of a TV show success? How can it be compared with more traditional data such as the number of viewer or the audience share?
