This document discusses Jurgen Habermas's concept of the public sphere and examines how well newspapers fulfill the role of a public sphere through an analysis of Scottish and UK newspaper coverage of the 1999 Scottish parliamentary election. It finds that the Scottish newspapers provided significantly more coverage that was more informative in nature, attempting to engage readers and substantiate voting decisions, indicating they better facilitated an informed public sphere for the election than the UK newspapers. The conclusion considers the role of news media in a democratic society and whether coverage is driven more by political responsibility or audience appeal.
