The Burnt Offering
• 1. This seems to be for intentional sin.
• 2. Male without defect
• 3. Lay hand on head to make atonement
• 4. Blood sprinkled on all sides of the altar
• 5. Skinned and cut into pieces
• 6. Pieces, including head and fat, placed on fire
• 7. Inner parts and legs washed and all of it burned
• 8. An aroma pleasing to the Lord
• 9. Sheep, goats dove or pigeon also accepted
• 10. The burnt offering is to remain on the altar throughout the night and
the fire must be kept burning.
• 11. The priest then with linen clothes shall remove the ashes of the
burnt offering and place them besides the altar. He is then to put on other
clothes and carry the ashes outside the camp to a place that is
ceremonially clean.
Grain Offering
• 1. This seems to be for a praise or thank offering as well as provision for
the priests.
• 2. Fine flour mixed with oil and incense
• 3. A memorial portion burned on the altar. An aroma pleasing to the
Lord.
• 4. The rest is given to Aaron and his sons. They are to eat it in the
courtyard of the Tent of Meeting. Any male descendant of Aaron may eat
it.
• 5. If grain offering is baked and brought, it is to be without yeast,
spread with oil and have no honey. Yeast and honey could be included in
offering of first fruits, but not as a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
• 6. When the priest is anointed, he is to bring 2 quarts of fine flour, half
in the morning and half in the evening. They are to prepare it with oil on a
griddle. When a priest offers a grain offering, it is to be burned
completely, it must not be eaten.
Fellowship/Peace Offering
• 1. This is to reinforce the fellowship we have with God and with each
other.
• 2. Male or female without defect
• 3. Hand on head, blood on all sides
• 4. All the fat that covers the inner parts, the kidneys and the covering
of the liver is burned
• 5. It is burned on top of the burnt offering
• 6. Aroma pleasing to the Lord
• 7. Burned as food for both the priest and the worshipper. The priest is
to receive the breast and the right thigh. He is to wave both before the
Lord to thank and recognize the Lord for His provision. This is the only
offering that the worshipper is given a portion. If the fellowship offering
of thanks, it must all be eaten the same day. If it is the result of a vow or a
freewill offering, it can also be eaten the next day. It needs to be burned
on the third day.
• 8. Must not eat any fat or blood
The Sin Offering
1. For unintentional sins
2. If the priest: young bull without defect, lay his hand on its head, take blood
into the tent of meeting, then dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it 7 times before
the Lord in front of the curtain of the sanctuary, other blood goes on the horns of the
altar of fragrant incense in the Tent of Meeting, the rest of the bulls blood is poured
out at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of meeting,
the fat, kidneys and covering of the liver to be removed just like fellowship offering.
They are then burned on the altar of burnt offering. All the rest of the bull is to be
taken outside the camp to a place that is ceremonially clean where the ashes are
thrown and burn it on a wood fire on the ash heap.
3. If whole Israelite community, even if they are unaware they are guilty.
When they become aware, they are to bring a young bull. The same procedure used
as above, but it is the elders of Israel that lay their hands on the bull.
4. If a leader, he is to bring a male goat without defect. Slaughtered in the
place the burnt offering is. The blood is spread on the horns of the altar and poured
out at the base, but no sprinkling seven times. Also no taking the rest and burning it
outside the camp
The Sin Offering (cont.)
5. If a member of the community, he is to bring a female goat or lamb
without defect. Same procedure as the leader. For both atonement is made
and he will be forgiven.
6. Also covered: a person who does not speak up when he hears a
public charge to testify regarding something he has seen or learned about;
and a person who touches something ceremonially unclean-the carcasses of
unclean animals, even if he is unaware of it, as well as touching human
uncleanliness; also someone who thoughtlessly takes an oath
a. In any of these cases, the sin is to be confessed and a female goat or
lamb is to be sacrificed. If they cannot afford those, 2 doves or pigeons are to
be brought: one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. Blood is
to be sprinkled on the side of the altar and the rest poured out at the base. If
he can’t afford the birds, about 2 quarts of fine flower can also be brought as
a sin offering in this case. No incense or oil is to be used. A portion of the
flour is to go to the priests.
The Sin Offering (part 3)
• b. The priest who offers the animal sin offering
shall eat it in a holy place. Whatever touches any
of the flesh will become holy. If any of the blood
is spattered on a garment, it must be washed in a
holy place. The clay pot the meat is cooked in
must be broken. If it is cooked in a bronze pot,
the pot is to be scoured and rinsed with water.
• c. Any sin offering whose blood is brought into
the Tent of Meeting to make atonement in the
Holy Place must not be eaten; it must be burned.
The Guilt/Tresspass Offering
• 1. This seems to address the things we should have done but didn’t.
• 2. When a person commits a violation and sins unintentionally in
regard to any of the Lord’s holy things, or in regards to the Lord’s
commands, he is to bring as a penalty a ram without defect and of the
appropriate monetary value. He is to make restitution for what he has
failed to do and add a fifth of the value.
• 3. This offering also addressed sinful behavior between people. Listed
specifically deceiving his neighbor about something entrusted to him or
left in his care, or stolen, or if he cheats him, or finds lost property and lies
about it, or if he swears falsely or “if he commits any such sin that people
may do”. He must make the situation right when he brings his guilt
offering to God, making restitution to the person who was wronged and
adding a fifth to the value of it. To God he must bring a ram without
defect and of a proper value.
• 4. The blood of the offering is to be sprinkled against the altar on all
sides. The fat, kidneys and covering of the liver is burned. The rest
belongs to the priest and must be eaten in a holy place.
