A study of forgiveness according to God's standpoint as revealed in His Word.

1. FORGIVENESS
• To learn of true forgiveness, one must look in the Bible to see what
God says about it, from His standpoint and then see what He
requires us to do.
• Ps 32:1-2 1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin
is covered. 2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not
iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. KJV
• Luke 7:47-48 47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are
many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is
forgiven, the same loveth little. 48 And he said unto her, Thy sins are
forgiven. KJV

2. FORGIVENESS

3. FORGIVENESS
• Jer 36:3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil
which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man
from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin. KJV
• 2 Chron 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall
humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their
wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin,
and will heal their land. KJV
• Ps 86:3-5 3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily. 4
Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my
soul. 5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous

4. FORGIVENESS
• From God’s standpoint forgiveness is conditional. Judah, the
southern kingdom had ended up disobeying God as had Israel the
northern kingdom who had already been taken captive and
scattered by the Assyrians. God had warned Judah of what would
happen to them and was willing to forgive them if they turned from
their wicked ways.
• David’s prayer was offered after he had acknowledged his sin with
Bathsheba and asked for forgiveness. David notes that God is ready
to forgive all who would call upon Him to do so.

5. FORGIVENESS
• Hos 1:2 The beginning of the word of the LORD by Hosea. And the LORD
said to Hosea, Go, take unto thee a wife of whoredoms and children of
whoredoms: for the land hath committed great whoredom, departing
from the LORD. KJV
• Hos 2:2 Plead with your mother, plead: for she is not my wife, neither am
I her husband: let her therefore put away her whoredoms out of her
sight, and her adulteries from between her breasts; KJV
• Hos 2:7-8 7 And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not
overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then
shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it
better with me than now. 8 For she did not know that I gave her corn,
and wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold, which they
prepared for Baal. KJV

6. FORGIVENESS
• In order to illustrate how God feels when His people sin against Him, God
tells Hosea to take a wife who is a prostitute.
• The children she produces are not from Hosea, she continued her
whoredoms and adultery. He asks the children to plead with her to stop.
• God then notes that His people went after their lovers, the false gods
they had served but could not overtake them, since actually they didn’t
exist. So then God’s people decided to return to God, their first husband
for things were better with Him. What they failed to realize was it was
God who had continued to supply their physical needs and even their
riches that they prepared for the false god Baal.

7. FORGIVENESS
• Hos 2:18-20 18 And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the
beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping
things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the
battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely. 19 And I
will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in
righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies. 20
I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know the
LORD.
• Hos 2:23 And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy
upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were
not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.

8. FORGIVENESS
• God tells Hosea there would come a day that He would make a new
covenant what His people that would be based on peace. He would
betroth or make them His wife forever. It would be based on
righteousness, judgment. Lovingkindness, and mercies. The marriage
would be based on faithfulness and they would know the Lord.
• The Lord would be merciful to those who had not obtained mercy.
• Those who were not His people, He would say they are My people and
they would say, Thou art my God.
• Rom 9:25 25 As God says in Hosea: "Those who are not my people I will
call my people. Those who are not loved I will call my loved ones. GWT

9. FORGIVENESS
• The new covenant is that made with Christians in the New
Testament per 1 Peter 2:9-10 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a
royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should
shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness
into his marvellous light: 10 Which in time past were not a people,
but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but
now have obtained mercy. KJV
• Gal 6:16 And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on
them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. KJV

10. FORGIVENESS
• Hos 3:1-5 Then the Lord told me, "Love your wife again, even
though she is loved by others and has committed adultery. Love her
as I, the Lord, love the Israelites, even though they have turned to
other gods and love to eat raisin cakes.“ 2 So I bought her for 23
ounces of silver and 10 bushels of barley. 3 Then I told her, "You
must wait for me a long time. Don't be a prostitute or offer yourself
to any man. I will wait for you.“
• 4 In the same way, the Israelites will wait a long time without kings
or officials, without sacrifices or sacred stones, and without ephods
or family idols. 5 After that, the Israelites will turn and look to the
Lord their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the
Lord for his blessings in the last days. GWT

11. FORGIVENESS
• God tells Hosea to love his wife again even though there are others who
love her that she had committed adultery with. The Lord explains that
this is how He loves the Israelites even though they turned to other gods
and loved to eat the raisin cakes offered to them.
• So Hosea goes and purchases her for a good amount of silver and buys a
large quantity of barley that she would use for her food because there is
a period of time that Hosea will wait for her to ensure she will be faithful
to him now.
• In the same way there will be a time that Israel will be without kings,
sacrifices, etc until they come to the Lord in the last days which is a
reference to New Testament times when the Lord established His
kingdom, His church, which is His wife, New Jerusalem – Revelation 21:2

12. FORGIVENESS
• Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and
every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know
me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD; for
I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. KJV
• Heb 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins
and their iniquities will I remember no more. KJV
• This now applies to New Testament Christians, those who have obeyed
the gospel of Christ.
• Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the
power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first,
and also to the Greek. KJV

13. FORGIVENESS
• Matt 18:21-22 21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft
shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but,
Until seventy times seven. KJV
• Luke 17:3-4 3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass
against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. 4 And if he
trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day
turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him. KJV
• There is now a new requirement concerning forgiveness. There is no
limit to the times one must be forgiven, according to Jesus.

14. FORGIVENESS
• Col 3:12-13 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and
beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind,
meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving
one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ
forgave you, so also do ye. KJV
• Eph 4:31-32 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and
clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. KJV
• Christians are to be a forgiving people.

15. FORGIVENESS
• Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not
what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. KJV
• Acts 7:59-60 59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and
saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 60 And he kneeled down, and
cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And
when he had said this, he fell asleep. KJV
• Matt 6:14-15 14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your
heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men
their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.KJV

16. FORGIVENESS
• So, how important is forgiveness? What are the consequences if
one does not forgive another? Does the individual have to repent
before you forgive them? Did Jesus and Stephen forgive those who
were in the process of killing them? What must you and I do?
• Matt 18:32-35 32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said
unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt,
because thou desiredst me: 33 Shouldest not thou also have had
compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? 34
And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he
should pay all that was due unto him. 35 So likewise shall my
heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not
