The Old English period in Britain spans from 450-1150 AD, beginning with the Anglo-Saxon conquest and ending with the Norman conquest. During this period, West Germanic tribes from Germany and Denmark, including the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, settled in Britain and introduced their Old English language. Old English had several dialects including Kentish, West Saxon, Mercian, and Northumbrian. It was a highly inflected Germanic language with four cases. Beowulf is the most prominent work of literature from the Old English period, telling the story of a Scandinavian hero who helps the Danes fight a monster.
