Student-generated videos: a model for developing written standard operating p...Melinda Box
Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) have an important role to play in laboratory operations, not only to maintain data consistency but also to ensure safe practice. Even so, development and use of them may be hindered by the perceived expense of time and effort relative to their expected benefit. While that cost can be minimized via the use of templates, this approach may produce documents that are not essential to practice if sufficient consideration is not given to the user’s experience. If, for example, the content does not have a clear beginning, middle, and end with regard to a process, users will not necessarily recognize their own successful (or unsuccessful) application of the information. Instead, SOP’s can be made more central in lab function by leveraging the experience of recent trainees. Their fresh awareness of carrying out the steps can shape the content into a more story-like format, thereby amplifying the power to connect with future users. In addition, unlike a template, this immediate navigation of the process tends to better focus the content on the most straightforward essentials. In our experience of producing and utilizing student-generated videos for instructional labs, we have observed the impact of these benefits. Our goal in this presentation is to identify and further explain those, based on human factors analysis, cognitive research, and instructional design principles, and to demonstrate how those aspects of procedural communication can be applied in making and utilizing SOP’s in academic research labs.

Speedy Learning: Best Practices in Accelerated Online Instructional DesignStaci Trekles
For presentation at the 2014 Conference on Distance Teaching and Learning - Madison, WI
Lately, more and more academic programs, particularly at the graduate level, are moving to an accelerated distance education model in an effort to help adult learners achieve necessary skills and credentials more conveniently (Rafferty & Lindell, 2011; Wlodkowski & Ginsberg, 2010). The movement toward accelerated coursework allows learners the freedom to work more quickly toward desired goals, transcending time and place (Pastore, 2010; Seamon, 2004). However, since the goal of any graduate-level program is to develop higher levels of learner expertise that can be put into practice immediately, it is important to ensure that deep learning of skills and knowledge is evoked, even when time is compressed (Biggs, 1987; Biggs & Tang, 2007; Clotfelter, Ladd, & Vigdor, 2007; Rafferty & Lindell, 2011; Wier, Stone & Hunton, 2005). What kinds of features, strategies, and tools must be in place to ensure that students in accelerated programs receive the same opportunities to learn deeply as their counterparts in more “traditional” programs? This case study investigated an accelerated program in education in order to learn from students and from the instructional design strategies employed.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Let’s level set on why the move to digital. A few things…
The American Woman’s College aspired to move to digital in order to lower costs and improve the learning experience.
Making a paradigm shift in education requires forward thinking. The ability to navigate the multi-verse of course material options available and leverage internal and external partnerships makes a significant difference.
That’s just what The American Women’s College at Bay Path University did…
They knew open educational resources (OER) would be a key factor. That’s when they turned to CURATE by Ed Map™, a consultative course materials service.
MARK
Benefits:
OER - Open Educational Resources
OER can offer drastic savings in the cost of education. Students who may not be able to afford expensive textbooks or other course materials will definitely appreciate the affordable option when taking a course with OER.
Engaging Content
OER supports different learning styles.
Going beyond the traditional textbook opens access to immersive, engaging digital content like: video, interactive text, audio downloads
And let’s not forget mobile access! Briging dynamic course materials to where students are -their devices.
Improved learning Outcomes
Providing course materials on or even before the start of class supports success.
Having the opportunity to start class prepared. This leads to class completion and ultimately degree completion.
And of course it provides an opportunity to offer students fresh and relevant content.
Having access to recent information in a course ensures students are learning the latest concepts, terms, and vocabulary that are relevant to the subject.
JEREMY
Structuring an effective institutional model of OER implementation at every level of the process.
From leveraging a Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) First in the World (FITW) grant,
determining operational logistics,
managing content curation,
to overseeing cost and scalability.
Learning outcomes from the demonstration portion will include: tips for grant writing, identifying institutional stakeholders, determining content quality and sustainability, and analysis of cost model variations.

Investment to get a single course into OER can be taxing.
Organize outcomes
Scour web for resources that match all outcomes
Organize, curate, build
Find supplemental materials, quiz questions, etc.
This is one of the major concerns and complaints of faculty who decide to go to OER.
JEREMY
Most institutions haven’t caught up to the OER movement when considering the supports available to faculty to defray the time spent curating, designing, and transitioning
Libraries have stepped into the void on many campuses. There are one or two librarians who are “OER” gurus. This is the case at BPU. “We don’t have the resources or subject expertise to take on dozens of projects at once.”
This is not sustainable given the increasing awareness of OER and desire to switch.
One example of a model is taking place at CTU where part-time subject matter experts are trained on OER curation and work with librarians and academics.
TAWC has been using an approach wherein we team a Program Director and SME team with Ed Map. Mark is going to tell you a bit more about how we worked out this partnership to scale.
MARK
Pilot to see helpful went well - 2 courses
Moved on to a bigger agreement - 20 courses
Discovered because they have adaptive learning platform (Realizit) we change their deliverable format
Originally biblio was annotated and mapped to learning objectives but need to change the a new format which was a biblio MATRIX with much more granular mapping (the matrix does not include annotation)
Discovered the same the format had to be different the content had to be different
Content was different required had to be consumed in less than 20 minutes (lessons 20 minutes long)
Didn’t want content to “overlap” Wanted each content to unique
For each learning outcome had to have 2 pieces of content and 2 different modalities of learning (podcast, reading) learn the same info in different ways
We phone call between Bay Path and the actual Ed Map Curater (Actual curate go on the call - no middle man)
Now in a 25 course agreement
