The Leaf - I
- 1. The leaf
- 2. Introduction Leaf is also flat, green and broad part of the shoot grows laterally from the node. A node is a point on the stem from where leaves and branches originate. Leaves do not continuously grow like the stem. It stops growing on attaining full size
- 4. Petiole The basal part of a leaf is a stalk called petiole. It is attached to the stem at the node. An axillary bud is present in the axil of the leaf. The axil is the angel between the leaf and the stem. Some leaves are directly attached to the stem without a leaf stalk and are called sessile leaves
- 5. Lamina/Leaf blade The green, flat, and broad part of the leaf. Its outer edge is called leaf margin.
- 6. Midrib Petiole continues into the lamina as midrib. This laterally gives out fine branches called veins. Petiole, midrib, veins and veinlets conduct water and food. Veins also provide a skeleton or a supportive framework to the leaves.
- 7. Types of leaves Simple leaf Compound leaf In this, the leaf lamina is undivided and is a single piece. In this, the lamina is divided into smaller units called leaflets. Examples: Mango, banyan, and banana Example : rose
