The Gesture Sketch
Assignment:
Create several gesture sketches of our life drawing model demonstrating a fluid process and preliminary
understanding of figure construction and pose.Please produce “loose”, “rectilinear”, and “curvilinear”
style gestures.
1.Coat your paper with the charcoal powder to “tone” the surface.
2. Using the Paper Mate Penraser, create a “bubble” and within this space begin to sketch the figure and
important figural angles, guidelines/plumblines and center line.
3. Once you have established key points, begin to fill in structural lines with vine charcoal, followed by
charcoal pencil.
4. Work first in a loose, carefree manner. In another set work in a more controlled rectilinear fashion,
followed by a curvilinear style.
Student Learning Objectives:
1. Demonstrate comfort and fluidity working with vine charcoal, penraser, and charcoal pencil.
2. Demonstrate a working method thatprogresses from “general” to “specific” including key lines and
angles.
3. Demonstrate improvement from first to second day of work.
4. Demonstrate basic ability to capture pose, body type, and fundamental proportions.
After our second session please hand in 1 “loose”, 1 “rectilinear”, and 1 “curvilinear” style drawing from
each session.
Grading:
Using the four drawings made on the first day of class I will look for specific improvements on the second
day, or at least efforts to address problem areas.
A: all learning objectives are met.
B: one learning objective has not been met.
C: two learning objectives have not been met.
D: three learning objectives have not been met.
F: no learning objectives have been met.
