1. DP 1: Unit 2 – Value to Model Form
Lesson: Value Drawings of paper sculpture using
value to create implied lines
Project Objectives: Create a pencil drawing with the
following:
• Controlled 0-9 value made through different
pencil shading techniques
• Correctly use pencils from HB to 6B for proper
values and textures
• Create a sense of form by using cross-contour
lines and shading
• Use implied lines of the objects in the drawing to create a strong composition
Mini-Labs:
• 6 different Pencil Shading techniques in journal
• Modified contours into a well-planned thumbnail in journal
Reference: Drawing as Expression, p. 76
Project Materials: HB to 6B pencils, eraser, white drawing paper, paper sculpture
Main Project Directions:
1. Complete the pencil shading techniques in journal in preparation for using the
techniques to create different values and textures.
a. Scumbling – great for shadows
b. Point shading – linear and shows form in the cross-contours
c. Side Shading – softer and smoothers values
d. Line Pressure(weight) – highlights
2. Complete 3 modified contour compositional drawings in your journal in order to get to
know your still life and begin planning your composition. Make a well-planned thumbnail
in your journal.
3. Stretch your drawing paper on your drawing board. Sharpen your pencils and get ready
to draw. Mark your place so you can return to it the next day, and the next, and the next.
4. With a light pencil, draw the main shapes of your composition.
5. With a light pencil, lightly sketch in the where the darkest values will be in the
composition.
6. Begin “sculpting” with pencil and bringing out the values of the still life.
7. Remember negative space can help hide errors and mistakes.
8. Don’t forget – good craftsmanship!!!
