1. Intro to Art – Unit 3: Drawing What You See
Still Life Value Study
Objective: Create a finished still life drawing in pencil with the following:
• Create a good composition using implied lines for a compositional
plan
• Use 0-9 pencil values throughout the drawing
• Develop a sense of form through value
• Employ sightlines and measures to create a realistic sense of
perspective
• Use good craftsmanship
Materials: 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, and/or 6B pencil; Sighting Pencil; Erasers;’11x14
White Drawing Paper; Newsprint; View finder
Mini-Labs:
1. Value Scale. Create a value scale using your drawing pencils. For values 1-3 use your lightest pencil (usually is
an HB); for values 3-7 use your medium pencil (usually a 2B); and for the final darkest values 7-9 use your
darkest pencil (usually 6B).
2. Forms. Build your own still life forms using the templates – cone, cube, and cylinder.
3. Value Shapes to Forms. Using your forms you built, draw the shapes – circle, triangle, square, and a rectangle.
Next use value to shade the shapes into forms – sphere, cone, cube, and cylinder. Don’t forget the shadows.
4. Viewfinder. Cut out and make your own viewfinder.
5. Thumbnail. Using your viewfinder, decide on a composition. Follow a compositional plane and sketch the
composition.
Studio Project:
• After completing the mini-labs, sketch out your thumbnail onto your drawing paper.
• Draw the big shapes of the still life. Make sure they are in perspective to each other.
• Use value to shade the objects of the still life and give them form.
• Don’t forget the shadows.
