City Of Ember Book Vs Movie Essay
Humanity s Back Up City What if humanity did not have the sun, the moon, and a steady supply of
electricity? In The City of Ember, Jeanne DuPrau writes about a city that lives underground, only they
don t know that they live underground. The citizens of Ember have never heard of the sun, the moon,
stars, plants, or animals. But if they don t have the sun or moon, how do they see anything? Ember has
an ancient generator in tunnels running under the city the Pipeworks. This generator supplies
electricity to all of the light bulbs that give light to Ember. Ember has a large stock of food and light
bulbs to last them awhile 220 years to be exact. After 220 years they would all escape because the
mayors of the city have a secret box with instructions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Well, the differences between the book and movie range from small, nitpicky details to important
aspects of the book. For one, on assignment day everyone who got a job was supposed to be twelve,
but in the movie Doon was seventeen and there were little five year olds running around with jobs.
Also another age related fault in the movie was when they made Looper look like he was forty, not
fifteen, and dating Lizzie. Besides age, the movie also cut out important scenes to show just how
severe the power outages and supply scarcities were, such as the part when Lina was buying color
pencils and Poppy got lost during a blackout. The movie also made Ember look like it had more
futuristic things than it should have had. In movie Ember, Pipeworks laborers had hats with lights on
them that could connect to electricity, but no movable light source was found in the books. Instead of
having a complicated lock on the box with the instructions, the box looked computerized. As a
replacement for a supply room, the movie had conveniently lockers that could transform into boats. It
had bugs and parasites, such as the octo rat thing, hiding around corners that could not be found in the
book. With all those differences, it only makes sense the book fans are

1990 s Take Off And Beyond Essay
The 1990 s Take Off and Beyond
The early 1990s is when the modern day began. In 1992, and Oxford University computer scientists
named Tim Berners Lee developed the World Wide Web. This was a data sharing space that anyone
with an internet connection can access. Not just government research centers and scientists with
access to top of the of the line equipment. As the 1990 s continued, the Internet continued to globalize.
In 1992, Erwise was the first successful Internet browser due to the graphical user interface software it
supplied. Erwise paved the way for Mosaic and eventually Netscape which accounted for 90 percent
of all internet browsing activity. As the Internet started to grow faster, companies such America Online
and Compuserve offered Internet through a dial up network connection. This allowed anyone with a
home phone line access to the Internet. The Internet was now expanding into residential homes and
was expanding globally. In 1994, the use of the internet was expanding by 2,500 percent a year.

to see most commuters holding a newspaper while riding the subway to work, today it has evolved to
smartphones and tablets. Phone applications have made it even easier to access information. Now in
the palm of their hands, a consumer has access to virtually anything they want or need anytime of the
day. Companies such as Facebook have launched initiatives to allow the Internet to become ubiquitous
in all parts of the world by utilizing drone technology. Google has launched initiatives such as Google

Relationship Advice
During high school, I was the only one of my friends who did not go on dates. I have to admit that it
was extremely embarrassing showing up to homecoming alone with a pair of balloons in my hand, but
it was totally worth it in the long run. Despite being single at the time, my friends came to me for
relationship advice. Since my friends all scored steady boyfriends with my advice, I bet you are eager
to find out what I told them. No guy will be able to resist you if you follow these pieces of advice.
First off, play extremely hard to get with your crush when he asks you out. You should constantly brag
about yourself and tell your date he s lucky he was able to get in contact with you. Flirt with the
attractive waiter asking what you want to drink to make your date jealous. Also, be brutally honest
with him when you don t leave him hanging. You want him to known that if this dinner does not go as
planned that you will be going to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If most girls wear fancy dresses, wear sweatpants and a hoodie. If most girls wear jeans and a blouse,
wear a fancy dress and high heels. Spend either hours on your makeup or put little effort into your
routine. Do not tell your date what you plan on wearing. Although he may already have an idea, it is
your job to leave him wondering.
If you follow these guidelines, you are sure to find true love after the first date. This advice has
worked for many girls, and they always share it with their closest friends. You will be seeing this
advice all over the place because it is the easiest and most successful way to win a guy over. The
writer of this advice, who has recently been revealed under the name of Mal Mal, has become a
practical therapist to other college girls looking for love. Despite her own words turning against her,
she still chooses to share her advice. If she can help other girls in college find love, she

Theoretical Cause Of Crime
A thorough understanding of the many theories of criminology is the grounding of knowledge to any
criminal justice practitioner or policy maker. Policy makers can utilize the theoretical understanding to
design policies that not only address remedies to the current crime problem, but also find the
underlying cause of crime to further deter it. Criminal justice practitioners can use criminological
theories to address the cause of crime and offer a rehabilitative fix, rather than simply incarcerate
offenders.
Four theoretical aspects that any criminal theory must incorporate to be a true theory of crime are
correlation, theoretical rationale, time sequence, and an absence of spuriousness (Akers Sellers, 2013).
Correlation must do with how the theoretical cause of crime leads to the commission of crime.
Theoretical rationale explains why the theoretical origin of crime causes the crime. The time sequence
must show that the theoretical cause of crime always precedes the crime. The final aspect, the absence
of spuriousness, rules out other causes for the crime as the real explanation of crime. (Akers Sellers,
2013).
A major challenge that faces the criminal justice field today are youth gangs. Strain Theory is perhaps
the best theoretical explanation of juvenile gang criminal activity. Agnew clarified strain as the
relationships in which others are not treating the individual as he or she would like to be treated.
(Tibbetts, 2015). Though this is the original definition,

Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra
Not knowing what to expect when I took my seat at the Atlanta Symphony Hall, I was anxious. I loved
hearing any classical music come over the radio for a few seconds as one of my parents turned the
knob on the radio while driving. No matter how hard I wished for the knob to stop turning, it never
did. The only real experience I had with classical music was during Music class at school and the one
teacher who played records in her room during quiet times. But this day was something special. My
sister and I were asked to join a small group of teens to attend a concert of the Atlanta Symphony
Youth Orchestra. The cousin of an attendee would play in the orchestra that year and I was thrilled to
be attending.
We got to our seats early so we could be sure we were in a good location. The instrumentalists
warming up with different sounds and scales all playing at the same time was like listening to the
sounds of nature. Everyone had their own different sound. Everyone was playing something different.
While I was amazed at what I heard, it wasn t until the conductor raised his baton and the first sounds
from a well practiced group took my breath away. Every section came together to make the most
beautiful sound floating throughout the hall; a sound of excellence. ... Show more content on

would be a sound we would never forget. I have a feeling it would bring both amazement and fear.
Fear of just how great our Lord is.

Raymund Maximilian Kolbe Thesis
What is a saint? A saint is a person of great holiness, who has performed miracles for God s cause.
What is a martyr? A martyr is someone who dies for what they believe in, just like Maximilian Kolbe.
Raymund Maximilian Kolbe was born January 8, 1894. He was born in Zdunska Wola, in Poland.
Both parents, Marianna and Juliusz, were very holy, and dedicated much of their time and money to
teach their children about the catholic faith. (Gale BIC, 2) They were both poor weavers, who traded
with Jewish merchants. From a young age, Maximilian was very fond of his faith. He enjoyed church,
and loved to pray. In 1907, Max and his brothers decided to move to an all boys Franciscan school.
Their mother was supportive of this decision, because she wanted to shield the boys from the other
sex. When he turned sixteen in 1910, he was going to join the army, but his mother thought he was fit
for the priesthood. (Gale BIC, 4) So, Kolbe relented, and in 1912, arrived in Rome, and spend the next
seven years their, learning an becoming a priest. He made his priestly vow in the year 1914, and
earned a doctorate in Philosophy in the year 1915. He was finally ordained a priest in 1918. (Gale

Lascia ch io pianga is an Italian soprano aria by Handel. The melody was first heard in Handel s 1705
opera Almira. Handel used the music repeatedly, again in a 1707 oratorio and four years later in the
opera Rinaldo, the first Italian opera written for the English stage. The story of Rinaldo takes place in
Jerusalem at the end of the eleventh century, at the time of the first Crusades. The lead character
Rinaldo is sitting with his lover, Almirena, when suddenly she is abducted. In the next act, Almirena is
in her captor s custody, taken away from her love and with no chance to escape. Praying for mercy,
Almirena sings Lascia ch io pianga, a song filled with sadness, fear and longing for Rinaldo. Such
emotion can be heard through long vibratos and the contrast of the high pitched vocals to the sporadic

Waugh Presents Change Consistently as a Destructive Force...
Waugh presents change consistently as a destructive force in the novel To what extent do you agree?
Within the context of pastoral literature, change is typically seen as a destructive force, intrinsic with
the movement away from a harmony with the natural world towards modernisation and corruption. In
Brideshead Revisited the same pattern appears to be followed; moving from the peaceful harmony of
Sebastian and Charles life in Oxford into corruption and turmoil or the shifting power balance
between the social classes, from the nobility to the lower classes. However, change is not exclusively
a negative force in the novel. Charles and Sebastian s first encounter into Rex s world of manipulation
and smooth talk is shown to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Looking beyond Hooper, the soldier s treatment of Brideshead adds to a sense of carelessness and lack
of awareness in the lower classes. The painting that Charles spent hours working on is made absolute
hay of , Charles created something of wonderful beauty, only to be destroyed by unappreciative men;
symbolic for the fate of Britain, in Waugh s eyes, in the hands of the Youth . In respect of the changes
Sebastian makes to Charles life, Waugh presents change as the antithesis of destructive. Before
Sebastian, Charles friends are described as grey figures , lifeless and colourless boys whom scrambled
fiercely for facts . Scrambled brings forth images of desperation, fiercely for facts heightening the
mocking tone of the description, as though they had nothing other than facts to be passionate about.
The first thing Waugh mentions about Sebastian, on the other hand, is the magical day him and
Charles lay underneath a tree in the country with the sweet scent of tobacco merged with the sweet
scents of summer around us and the fumes of the sweet, golden wine lifting them a finger s breadth
above the turf . The repetition of sweet makes this description even more sensuous as it draws upon
one s sense of taste and smells simultaneously, the heavy sibilance in the phrase sweet scents making

The Factors Associated With Youth Homelessness And Arrest,...
Poverty has long been a consistent characteristic in crime. Numerous theories like Social
Disorganization, Labeling Theory, and Strain Theory have been created to try to explain the

that poverty causes contribute to crime. Yet, the connection between poverty and crime continues to

Regret Kate Chopin Analysis
Mamzelle Aurélie, the main character in Regret , has never been in love nor had the thought of
marrying. Why is this you may be wondering? Well, it is hard to say why Mamzelle Aurélie would
choose a lifestyle like this, but maybe she never found the right man to fit her wants and needs or
maybe she liked to be independent and live her life without having to think of someone besides
herself. In Regret , Kate Chopin illustrates how Mamzelle Aurélie, a fifty year old woman who has
never been in love, becomes engulfed with emptiness after experiencing a new found joy. Mamzelle
Aurélie s new found joy does not appear right away. One morning Mamzelle Aurélie s neighbor drops
off her four children in a hurry saying she must go attend to her sick mother and her husband had gone
to Texas. Mamzelle Aurélie had no choice to say no because before she knew it their mother was gone
and she was left on her porch with four children that she did not want. Mamzelle Aurélie was ill
prepared to give the attention children required and demanded (Chopin 98). She was not prepared
because she had never once been around children and did not know how to treat them or even know
what to do with them. Chopin writes, She was, indeed, very inapt, in her management of Odile s
children during the first few days (98). This meaning Mamzelle Aurélie was not suitable for the
circumstances she had come to be in. The wording Chopin used in this paragraph, for example saying

The Impact Nationalism in Italy and the Austrian Empire
Nationalism holds that where a nation exists, it should govern itself. The forces of nationalism
influenced central Europe from Italy to the land of the Austrian Habsburgs. After 1815, the region
knew the positive effects of a different style of governing and was divided into a much more rational
set of political units. There was an effort by both states to unite its segmented lands, so that they could

Summary of Article Topic
In the article, Perceptions of Burnout, Its Prevention and Its Effect on Patient Care as Described by
Oncology Nurses in the Hospital Setting, Russell, (2016) gives a quantitative approach on the
thoughts of burnout nurses in clinical oncology registered nurses. Nurses that work oncology normally
do not take care of themselves due to the extensive care they give to their patients therefore run a high
risk of burnout that may lead to compassion fatigue, resentment and displeasure of their job. In burnt

Macuahuitl Research Paper
The macuahuitl is an ancient Aztec weapon that looks noticeably like a sword but can also be
classified as a club. I, like the macuahuitl, am not defined by one name or classification. My life is a
development of innumerable characteristics. The macuahuitl, on the surface, is a simple weapon, but it
can be broken down to observe its complexities. The macuahuitl has an interesting history, and it
portrays life in general and my personality in more ways than one. The development of a weapon
allows us to peer into its use and the thoughts behind the weapon. The macuahuitl was made out of a
wood plank with a narrow handle and wide paddle. What made it dangerous was the razor like
volcanic rock protruding out of the paddle which acted like a thousand fire ants biting into the skin.
The Aztecs used this weapon as the uttermost important weapon in their arsenal. Columbus was
enchanted by it, which is exemplified by the fact that he arranged for one to be sent to Spain. The
weapon started as a terse, one handed weapon, and it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Parents Should Be A Good Parent
Through the entire interview process, four of the eleven participants, two males, one was in the
younger age group and the other was in the older age group, and two females, again with one from
each group, explicitly said what my research has explained: children raised by gay parents learn to
become more open towards others than children raised by straight parents. All of the participants gave
answers that aligned with my research on the kind of parent a child needs and what a healthy
household consists of. Each contributor believed that love and support, as well as a handful of other
qualities leads to a well developed child. The handful of qualities mentioned by informants were:
stable, mature, and responsible. Informants believe a parent should be someone who is capable of
caring for someone else. No one mentioned a single thing about the sexual orientation required to be a
good parent; society does not take sexual orientation into consideration when describing who could be

To contrast what I found in researching to what I found informants had to say, two interviewees
depicted gay parenting as not the norm , or not normal in today s society , both from the younger age
group, one female and one male. Moreover, men tended to suppose that a child having gay parents
will be predisposed to gay tendencies and will therefore become confused with their sexual orientation
or may lean towards more gay tendencies . Of all the men who thought this, two of them

Francis Bacon s En Dublin, Irlanda En 1909
Francis Bacon

Vitamin D and Athletic Performance Essay
Good nutrition and its role in positively affecting athletic performance has become more and more
evident almost daily. Specific macro and micronutrients are better understood as to their specific
functions within the body and from that how they can influence the body s ability to perform while
under duress. An example of such would be the stress of athletic performance. Vitamin D, which is
also referred to as cholecalciferol, is one of the fat soluble vitamins that have been attributed to
influencing athletic performance. However, vitamin D is not as much a performance enhancing
nutrient in the sense that when taken in higher amounts it will aid athletic performance, but rather
when in deficient amounts it can hinder athletic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many factors influence how much sunlight exposure individuals receive and thus impact the amount
of Vitamin D that the body can synthesize. Latitude, season of the year, time of day, sunblock, melanin
content of the skin, age, and clothing are a few of these factors. Cannell and associates describes that
individuals who train and/or compete above the 35 degree latitude marker, which is half of the United
States and all of Canada and Europe, do not receive enough sun exposure to synthesize enough
Vitamin D, especially during the fall and winter seasons 2. Others who are at risk are those who
engage in indoor sports or train primarily indoors, such as gymnasts, indoor track and field athletes,
basketball players, and wrestlers to name a few. There is also a surprisingly high amount of Vitamin D
deficiency described in Miami, Florida because of the extensive use of sunblock 3.
Vitamin D Deficiency The definition of Vitamin D deficiency is changed almost yearly, as the
laboratory levels which determine what is an adequate or inadequate level of vitamin D in the blood
serum are changing as well 2, 4. Recent research studies have determined that ideal levels of vitamin
D are at or above 50 ng·mL 1 from 30 ng·mL 1, which was previously thought to be adequate levels
within the blood. This is problematic for several reasons, but one of the most critical reasons is that
the number of diseases caused at least in part by vitamin D are on the rise and

Communication Reflection Paper
At times, circumstances in life can unknowingly guide one on a path leading to a promising and
rewarding career. Thanks to my family and sister, I am here today. When I was four years old, my
younger sister Carly was diagnosed with a rare developmental disorder, called Smith Magenis
Syndrome (SMS). Of course at the time I did not understand what this meant, but as we got older,
many of Carly s challenges were attributes that came easily to me and other typically developing kids.
One of her biggest challenges was and still is today is communicating effectively. For instance, Carly
didn t use full words until early elementary school. Before that, she communicated mostly through
pointing or using monosyllabic repetitions when she wanted objects. At worst, she would express her
thoughts and frustrations through outbursts. From this young age, I was able to observe Carly and her
SLP work on improving her communication, either in our home or during her speech sessions at the
therapy clinic. However during my high school career, becoming an SLP was just in the back of my
mind, and was never my first choice. It didn t become prominent until entered my freshman year of
college at the University of Iowa, and took the Intro to Speech Hearing Processes and Disorders class.
Throughout the semester I not only became interested in the concepts I previously experienced
through my sister, but also in concepts I had never heard of or thought twice about like stuttering,
aphasia, and

The Basic Function Of The Hydraulic System
As we know that there is increase in population and due to this there is a very high demand of
vehicles. As the sales of cars and bikes are increasing there is a shortage of parking spaces. People
park their cars on road, which causes very long traffic jams and due to this common man faces a lot of
problems. So we came up with what was called Multilevel Parking .
Its sounds pretty cool, but the main problem was how are we going to achieve it?
We build track through the building for the vehicles to take them on different parking level, which will
cost more and will not be for generations.
Another solution was using Hydraulics, motors and electric system to take the cars to different level
and it will last much longer.

How Automated parking System Work
Automated car parking system using a similar type of technology to use the package for mechanical
handling and document retrieval.
The driver leaves the car inside the system/parking lot with the help of equipments (like sensors) the
vehicle is parked in an assigned area. Hydraulic lift or Mechanical jack is used to move the vehicle to
higher or lower levels of the parking for proper parking. The vehicle can be moved vertically in the
parking (up down) and horizontally (left or right) until the car needed again. When the vehicle is
required, the process is reversed and the transport car raises the vehicle again to the same area where
the driver left. In some cases, a turntable be used to position the car so that the driver comfortable
drive away without saving the need. The car parking system uses hydraulic lifters for this purpose.
History
Over the years, the parking system and accompanying technologies have increased and diversified.

Myotonic Dystrophy Case Study
In this article, myotonic dystrophy, the most common inherited type of muscular dystrophy found in
adults, is discussed. This disease occurs one out of every eight thousand people and is said to get
increasingly worse as it is passed down from generation to generation. Myotonic dystrophy affects
people by making it to where they cannot relax their muscles after using them; for example, if
someone with this disease were to grip something, they would have a hard time releasing that object.
This hinderance in turn causes the muscles to become weak and waste away. This article examines
two different case studies in which two individuals, from the same family, are found to have this
muscular disease before symptoms of this actual disease occur. In the first case study, a thirty nine
year old woman visited her eye clinic for her regular checkup. During the examination, the doctor ...

Theme Of Names In Song Of Solomon
Jack Noble
Mr. Fusco
10/13/17
Song of Solomon Names Names are apart of all cultures and have major significance to the recipients
of the name and further to the society as a whole. People are identified by the name provided to them
at birth. This such name can be derived from a variety of different origins, depending heavily upon
what ethnicity, or culture the child is born into. A parent provides their child with a name that they
believe has some kind of significance, or a deeper symbolic meaning to their family. Throughout one s
life, they might acquire a number of nicknames. Nicknames can reflect how others perceive a certain
person, or even how that person views himself, inferring either a positive or negative connotation. In
Songs of Solomon, many characters have names that provide a deeper insight on their true identity in
the novel. Whether the character is trying to escape the reality of their name or not, the name itself still
establishes truth behind theirs actions and who they came from. Names in Song of Solomon ultimately
establish a character s behavioral traits and cultural background, advancing the direction of the novel.
In the novel, many of the characters are provided with names of either biblical or mythological
descent. These such names provide insight as to the identity of the character in the novel and further
the purpose of the character in the progression of the plot. Many of the children s names were chosen
at birth by sticking a pin into the

Analysis Of Solomon Northup s 12 Years A Slave
Written by Solomon Northup and published in 1853, 12 Years a Slave is an autobiography describing
the horrible experiences that Solomon himself faced, within a span of twelve years, after having been
kidnapped as a free man, beaten, and sold into slavery. As a tribute to Northup s powerful memoir, in
2013 a film was created, also called 12 Years a Slave, which served to retell Northup s story through
the power of cinematic effects, actors, and cameras. However, even though the movie is based entirely
on Northup s memoir, in does not serve to accurately portray every factual and historical detail that
appears within the novel. Details such as the number of children Northup had, the characteristics of
the people he came across, to the severity of white treatments towards slaves, all seemed to have been
looked over in the making of the movie. This inattention to detail can confuse or upset those who have
read the novel, whilst on the other hand will falsely portray the time period, as well as Northup s heart
wrenching experience, to those who have not previously read the novel.
In the beginning of his memoir, Solomon clearly states that he only wished to give a candid and
truthful statement of facts: to repeat the story of [his] life, without exaggeration (Northup 1), however,
the film based upon the novel does not appear to stay true to Solomons wishes. In fact, the film
appears to have completely looked over crucial events which served to lay the foundation of Northup

Black Music In The 1920 s
Unfortunately, the history of black music has been a continuous one of whites lucrative expropriation
of black cultural forms (Kelley). Black music has become a part of a structure of stealing (Kelley) on
the part of a white dominated music industry. This structure began primarily during the jazz era of the
1920 s. Black jazz artists were exploited for their talent, without being given the full credit or
compensation for their work that they deserved. Furthermore, their music and style was copied and
credited to white artists, and the few black artists who were able to succeed in the industry were
submitted to a form of musical segregation via race records.

Due to the lucrative business of black jazz music, in the 1920 s record labels developed race records,
or race music; the name given to recordings by black artists that were marketed [specifically] to the
black buying public (Zolten). This process segregated the musical community, creating race based
binaries and a glass ceiling for black artists that was nearly impossible to break through. These race
records limited their audience appeal and made it impossible for their music to reach the entire
population. It was a means of separating the black artists from the rest of the music industry.
Furthermore, at its zenith, race music was a hugely profitable venture, selling upwards of 100 million
records each year (Chatard). While the industry was attempting to target black audiences, it was the
whites who were making all the money in a patronizing form of control over the music s distribution
that exploited black artists and black audiences. Race music was a means of capitalizing on black
America s rising sense of cultural solidarity, and did so by objectifying the jazz sound and jazz
musicians as a means of profiting on their musical expression. Black music was being marginalized as
made for only black audiences, while white jazz musicians were capitalizing on the black sound.
Furthermore, black artists continued to often be kept anonymous, and were never given credit for their
music. Although race records did become a means of popularizing and celebrating African American
artists, it was a primarily pejorative form of segregating the music industry by race that limited the
black artists potential for monetary and celebratory

How Is Japanese Internment Justified
Japanese Internment
Executive Order 9066 was issued on February 19, 1942, by President Roosevelt, two months after the
attack on Pearl Harbor. It declared that any and all persons could be detained and taken off of the West
Coast due to military necessity. Executive Order 9066 was established because on December 7, 1941,
Japan struck a United States Naval Base in Honolulu, Hawaii killing 2,043 Americans and injuring
1,000 more American citizens. They struck the United States with bombs trying to destroy their
battleships and their army. One day after the attack, the United States declared war on the Japanese

activity...all Japanese, whether citizens or not, be placed in inland concentration camps (Document A).
The government wanted to prevent spying, or fifth column activity, from occurring while the United
States was in a fragile state. This was for the well being of the country because if the United States
took a chance on spies and sabotage, it could lead to further destruction. In conclusion, the internment

Canadian Narrative
It was a cool September morning in the 19th century, the brisk, dry breeze of Kentucky s Autumn

from my master and live in freedom. Maybe I truly could make it to Canada, it may be getting cold,
but temperature could only douse my hope for so long. Standing and brushing the leaves off from my
dress, I gathered myself and headed out onto the Underground Railroad; my path to liberty. The leaves
crunched and tattered beneath my feet, and the comfort of the cave walls were left behind me. I couldn

  • 2. City Of Ember Book Vs Movie Essay Humanity s Back Up City What if humanity did not have the sun, the moon, and a steady supply of electricity? In The City of Ember, Jeanne DuPrau writes about a city that lives underground, only they don t know that they live underground. The citizens of Ember have never heard of the sun, the moon, stars, plants, or animals. But if they don t have the sun or moon, how do they see anything? Ember has an ancient generator in tunnels running under the city the Pipeworks. This generator supplies electricity to all of the light bulbs that give light to Ember. Ember has a large stock of food and light bulbs to last them awhile 220 years to be exact. After 220 years they would all escape because the mayors of the city have a secret box with instructions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Well, the differences between the book and movie range from small, nitpicky details to important aspects of the book. For one, on assignment day everyone who got a job was supposed to be twelve, but in the movie Doon was seventeen and there were little five year olds running around with jobs. Also another age related fault in the movie was when they made Looper look like he was forty, not fifteen, and dating Lizzie. Besides age, the movie also cut out important scenes to show just how severe the power outages and supply scarcities were, such as the part when Lina was buying color pencils and Poppy got lost during a blackout. The movie also made Ember look like it had more futuristic things than it should have had. In movie Ember, Pipeworks laborers had hats with lights on them that could connect to electricity, but no movable light source was found in the books. Instead of having a complicated lock on the box with the instructions, the box looked computerized. As a replacement for a supply room, the movie had conveniently lockers that could transform into boats. It had bugs and parasites, such as the octo rat thing, hiding around corners that could not be found in the book. With all those differences, it only makes sense the book fans are ... • 7. Theoretical Cause Of Crime A thorough understanding of the many theories of criminology is the grounding of knowledge to any criminal justice practitioner or policy maker. Policy makers can utilize the theoretical understanding to design policies that not only address remedies to the current crime problem, but also find the underlying cause of crime to further deter it. Criminal justice practitioners can use criminological theories to address the cause of crime and offer a rehabilitative fix, rather than simply incarcerate offenders. Four theoretical aspects that any criminal theory must incorporate to be a true theory of crime are correlation, theoretical rationale, time sequence, and an absence of spuriousness (Akers Sellers, 2013). Correlation must do with how the theoretical cause of crime leads to the commission of crime. Theoretical rationale explains why the theoretical origin of crime causes the crime. The time sequence must show that the theoretical cause of crime always precedes the crime. The final aspect, the absence of spuriousness, rules out other causes for the crime as the real explanation of crime. (Akers Sellers, 2013). A major challenge that faces the criminal justice field today are youth gangs. Strain Theory is perhaps the best theoretical explanation of juvenile gang criminal activity. Agnew clarified strain as the relationships in which others are not treating the individual as he or she would like to be treated. (Tibbetts, 2015). Though this is the original definition, ... I loved hearing any classical music come over the radio for a few seconds as one of my parents turned the knob on the radio while driving. No matter how hard I wished for the knob to stop turning, it never did. The only real experience I had with classical music was during Music class at school and the one teacher who played records in her room during quiet times. But this day was something special. My sister and I were asked to join a small group of teens to attend a concert of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. The cousin of an attendee would play in the orchestra that year and I was thrilled to be attending. We got to our seats early so we could be sure we were in a good location. The instrumentalists warming up with different sounds and scales all playing at the same time was like listening to the sounds of nature. Everyone had their own different sound. Everyone was playing something different. While I was amazed at what I heard, it wasn t until the conductor raised his baton and the first sounds from a well practiced group took my breath away. Within the context of pastoral literature, change is typically seen as a destructive force, intrinsic with the movement away from a harmony with the natural world towards modernisation and corruption. In Brideshead Revisited the same pattern appears to be followed; moving from the peaceful harmony of Sebastian and Charles life in Oxford into corruption and turmoil or the shifting power balance between the social classes, from the nobility to the lower classes. However, change is not exclusively a negative force in the novel. Charles and Sebastian s first encounter into Rex s world of manipulation and smooth talk is shown to be ... The painting that Charles spent hours working on is made absolute hay of , Charles created something of wonderful beauty, only to be destroyed by unappreciative men; symbolic for the fate of Britain, in Waugh s eyes, in the hands of the Youth . In respect of the changes Sebastian makes to Charles life, Waugh presents change as the antithesis of destructive. Before Sebastian, Charles friends are described as grey figures , lifeless and colourless boys whom scrambled fiercely for facts . Scrambled brings forth images of desperation, fiercely for facts heightening the mocking tone of the description, as though they had nothing other than facts to be passionate about. The first thing Waugh mentions about Sebastian, on the other hand, is the magical day him and Charles lay underneath a tree in the country with the sweet scent of tobacco merged with the sweet scents of summer around us and the fumes of the sweet, golden wine lifting them a finger s breadth above the turf . The repetition of sweet makes this description even more sensuous as it draws upon one s sense of taste and smells simultaneously, the heavy sibilance in the phrase sweet scents making the ... Well, it is hard to say why Mamzelle Aurélie would choose a lifestyle like this, but maybe she never found the right man to fit her wants and needs or maybe she liked to be independent and live her life without having to think of someone besides herself. In Regret , Kate Chopin illustrates how Mamzelle Aurélie, a fifty year old woman who has never been in love, becomes engulfed with emptiness after experiencing a new found joy. Mamzelle Aurélie s new found joy does not appear right away. One morning Mamzelle Aurélie s neighbor drops off her four children in a hurry saying she must go attend to her sick mother and her husband had gone to Texas. Mamzelle Aurélie had no choice to say no because before she knew it their mother was gone and she was left on her porch with four children that she did not want. Mamzelle Aurélie was ill prepared to give the attention children required and demanded (Chopin 98). She was not prepared because she had never once been around children and did not know how to treat them or even know what to do with them. Chopin writes, She was, indeed, very inapt, in her management of Odile s children during the first few days (98). • 31. Analysis Of Solomon Northup s 12 Years A Slave Written by Solomon Northup and published in 1853, 12 Years a Slave is an autobiography describing the horrible experiences that Solomon himself faced, within a span of twelve years, after having been kidnapped as a free man, beaten, and sold into slavery. As a tribute to Northup s powerful memoir, in 2013 a film was created, also called 12 Years a Slave, which served to retell Northup s story through the power of cinematic effects, actors, and cameras. However, even though the movie is based entirely on Northup s memoir, in does not serve to accurately portray every factual and historical detail that appears within the novel. Details such as the number of children Northup had, the characteristics of the people he came across, to the severity of white treatments towards slaves, all seemed to have been looked over in the making of the movie. This inattention to detail can confuse or upset those who have read the novel, whilst on the other hand will falsely portray the time period, as well as Northup s heart wrenching experience, to those who have not previously read the novel. In the beginning of his memoir, Solomon clearly states that he only wished to give a candid and truthful statement of facts: to repeat the story of [his] life, without exaggeration (Northup 1), however, the film based upon the novel does not appear to stay true to Solomons wishes. In fact, the film appears to have completely looked over crucial events which served to lay the foundation of Northup ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Black Music In The 1920 s Unfortunately, the history of black music has been a continuous one of whites lucrative expropriation of black cultural forms (Kelley). Black music has become a part of a structure of stealing (Kelley) on the part of a white dominated music industry. This structure began primarily during the jazz era of the 1920 s. Black jazz artists were exploited for their talent, without being given the full credit or compensation for their work that they deserved. Furthermore, their music and style was copied and credited to white artists, and the few black artists who were able to succeed in the industry were submitted to a form of musical segregation via race records. In an industry run by whites, in a time when racism was the cultural norm, black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the lucrative business of black jazz music, in the 1920 s record labels developed race records, or race music; the name given to recordings by black artists that were marketed [specifically] to the black buying public (Zolten). This process segregated the musical community, creating race based binaries and a glass ceiling for black artists that was nearly impossible to break through. These race records limited their audience appeal and made it impossible for their music to reach the entire population. It was a means of separating the black artists from the rest of the music industry. Furthermore, at its zenith, race music was a hugely profitable venture, selling upwards of 100 million records each year (Chatard). While the industry was attempting to target black audiences, it was the whites who were making all the money in a patronizing form of control over the music s distribution that exploited black artists and black audiences. Race music was a means of capitalizing on black America s rising sense of cultural solidarity, and did so by objectifying the jazz sound and jazz musicians as a means of profiting on their musical expression. Black music was being marginalized as made for only black audiences, while white jazz musicians were capitalizing on the black sound. Furthermore, black artists continued to often be kept anonymous, and were never given credit for their music. Although race records did become a means of popularizing and celebrating African American artists, it was a primarily pejorative form of segregating the music industry by race that limited the black artists potential for monetary and celebratory ... • 36. How Is Japanese Internment Justified Japanese Internment Executive Order 9066 was issued on February 19, 1942, by President Roosevelt, two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. It declared that any and all persons could be detained and taken off of the West Coast due to military necessity. Executive Order 9066 was established because on December 7, 1941, Japan struck a United States Naval Base in Honolulu, Hawaii killing 2,043 Americans and injuring 1,000 more American citizens. They struck the United States with bombs trying to destroy their battleships and their army. One day after the attack, the United States declared war on the Japanese Empire. The United States had just been infiltrated by Japanese forces causing an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and they were in a state of emergency. The United States was worried that Japanese American citizens would be loyal to their descendant country and they did not want anyone to be able to further sabotage the United States in World War II. Leland Ward, a governmental representative for California, argued that the internment was justified in January of 1942, To prevent any fifth column activity...all Japanese, whether citizens or not, be placed in inland concentration camps (Document A). The government wanted to prevent spying, or fifth column activity, from occurring while the United States was in a fragile state. This was for the well being of the country because if the United States took a chance on spies and sabotage, it could lead to further destruction. In conclusion, the internment was justified because the United States could not afford another attack on one of their military ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Canadian Narrative It was a cool September morning in the 19th century, the brisk, dry breeze of Kentucky s Autumn winds struck my face. It woke me from my slumber within the dark, forlorning cave. The dim glow of dawn s sunrise was refreshing, it gave me a sense of hope that... maybe I could survive running away from my master and live in freedom. Maybe I truly could make it to Canada, it may be getting cold, but temperature could only douse my hope for so long. Standing and brushing the leaves off from my dress, I gathered myself and headed out onto the Underground Railroad; my path to liberty. The leaves crunched and tattered beneath my feet, and the comfort of the cave walls were left behind me. I couldn t hide forever, I had to face the harsh reality that there was going home now. It s unfortunate why I had to take the railroad, they were going to sell me to the Carolina s for my learning. And we all know South Carolina is the deepest south you can get.
