The Dome of the Rock was built in Jerusalem on the site where the Jewish Temple once stood, in order to establish Jerusalem as a major pilgrimage site for Muslims and discourage pilgrimages to Mecca. It was commissioned by Caliph Abd-Al-Malik in the late 7th century and features an octagonal exterior wall and a large central dome supported by an arcade, with mosaics and decorative elements conveying Islamic symbols.

Islamic architecture captivates people for several reasons:
Intricate Design: Islamic architecture is renowned for its intricate and elaborate designs, characterized by geometric patterns, arabesques, and calligraphy. These designs often adorn mosques, palaces, and other structures, creating visually stunning environments.
Spiritual Significance: Many are drawn to the spiritual symbolism embedded in Islamic architecture, especially in mosques. The grandeur of these buildings often evokes a sense of awe and reverence, providing a space for worship and reflection.
Cultural Heritage: Islamic architecture reflects the rich cultural heritage of various regions across the Islamic world, spanning from Spain to Southeast Asia. Its diversity showcases the amalgamation of different architectural styles, influenced by local traditions and historical contexts.
Innovation and Engineering: Islamic architects have been pioneers in various architectural innovations, including the development of geometric principles and advanced construction techniques. The soaring domes, intricate arches, and towering minarets demonstrate their mastery of engineering and design.
Timelessness: Islamic architecture has stood the test of time, with many structures dating back centuries yet still retaining their beauty and functionality. This timelessness speaks to the enduring appeal and significance of Islamic architectural principles.
Overall, Islamic architecture continues to fascinate people worldwide, serving as a testament to the ingenuity, creativity, and cultural richness of the Islamic civilization.
Jama masjid is the largest mosque in India.
Originally called Masjid-i-Jahanuma, or "mosque commanding view of the world“.
It was based on the plan and design of Ostad Khalil .
It can be called as the replica of Moti Masjid in Agra.
It is one of the finest mosque in the world.
It is a congregational mosque.
Byzantine architecture is the architecture of the Byzantine Empire, or Eastern Roman Empire. The Byzantine era is usually dated from 330 AD, when Constantine the Great moved the Roman capital to Byzantium, which became Constantinople, until the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453.
ROMANESQUE ARCHITECTURE
Decline of Roman Empire lead to building of large churches called cathedrals in a big way with the spread of organized monasteries called order.
Monastic orders include orders such as the Benedictine order (teachers), Augustinian order (preachers), the Cistercian order (farmers), the Clunaic order (artists), and Carthusian order (Ascetics).
The monks used a simplified Roman style with thick load bearing walls stout columns, small window openings and semi circular arches that came to be known as the “Romanesque” style.
Expansion of Romanesque architecture was linked with pilgrimage to Santiago, expansion of orders, crusades and development of feudal system.
The style can be discovered throughout Europe with its regional variations.
CHARACTERISTICS
Harmonious proportions
Thick and heavy walls and pillars
Small windows
Round arches supporting the roof.
Round blind arches for decoration
Sculptured decorations on portals, capitals and other surfaces.
Painted decorations
Plan: Retains basic plan of Early Christian Basilica ( Long three aisled nave intercepted by a transept and terminating in a semicircular apse crowned by a half dome ).
Support arches are the combination of half segments of large hollow columns or a clustered group of small shafts.
Cruciform in shape masonry and square or rectangle in section.
Barrel Vault:
The simplest type of vaulted roof
Single arched surfaces extend from wall to wall, the length of the space to be vaulted.
Barrel Vault requires strong support from solid walls.
Groin Vault: Intersection of two barrel vaults at right angles.
Ribbed Vault: In a ribbed vault, not only are the ribs spanning the vaulted area transversely but each vaulted bay has diagonal ribs.
Pointed arch Vault:
In Late Romanesque period, another solution came into use from regulating the height of diagonal and traverse ribs.
Salvaged Columns
In Italy, during this period, a great number of antique Roman columns were salvaged and reused in the interiors and on the porticos of churches.
The marble columns are most durable and have stone horizontally bedded.
Majority are vertically bedded and are sometimes of a variety of colors.
They have retained the original roman capitals, of the Corinthian or Roman Composite style.
Salvaged columns
Drum Columns
Hollow core columns
Alteration of piers and columns.
Building materials
Brick – Italy, Poland , much Germany and parts of the Netherland.
Limestone, granite – other areas
Building stone – small and irregular pieces, bedded in thick mortar.
Architectonical Typology - Church, Monastery, Castle.
Italian Romanesque - Pisa complex
French Romanesque -Abbey aux Hommes
English Romanesque - White tower

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
You could be a professional graphic designer and still make mistakes. There is always the possibility of human error. On the other hand if you’re not a designer, the chances of making some common graphic design mistakes are even higher. Because you don’t know what you don’t know. That’s where this blog comes in. To make your job easier and help you create better designs, we have put together a list of common graphic design mistakes that you need to avoid.

2. Caliph Abd–Al–Malika had the Dome of the Rock built on the same place
where the Temple of Jerusalem had stood. The temple, stood in the centre of
the sacred site on Mount Moraih.
3. According to tradition, Muhammad first selected Jerusalem as the qibla, the
direction the faithful should face during prayer.
Later, the prophet redirected his followers to face the city of Mecca
when praying, to symbolize Islam's independence from the other monotheistic
religions that had chosen Jerusalem as their most holy city.
In the late seventh century, however, Chaliph Abd El-Malik wanted to discourage
his followers from making the pilgrimage to Mecca because he feared that they
might fall under the influence of one of his Muslim rivals.
He, therefore, constructed the Dome in the hopes of establishing
Jerusalem as the major Muslim pilgrimage destination, so that he could keep his
followers and attract new ones.

platform.
• It is supported by a circular arcade
of four piers and twelve columns.
• Surrounding this circle is an
octagonal arcade of eight piers and
sixteen columns, which help support
the dome.
• The outer wall repeats this
octagon, each of the eight sides being
about 18 meters wide and 8 meters
high.
• Both the dome and the exterior
walls contain many windows.
8. • The central octagonal plan is 54m in diameter
• The Cuppola, rises to height of 30m.
• The facades of the octagon, facing the four
cardinal points have doors with porches.
• The largest facing south, has a porch
supported by 8 paired columns, in 2 rows on
either side of the entrance
• Dominating the sacred rock, and supported
on a drum, is the DOME- Suggestive of the
horseshoe arch, rises high above.
• Inside there is a Double Ambulatory, used
for ritual circumambulation . These ring like
spaces are bounded by concentric porches.
• The outré most is Octagonal and runs parallel
to the walls of the buildings.
• On each wall of the Octagon, there are two columns between the corner and pillar.
• Portico – comprises of 8 pillars and 16 columns.
• Interior Portico – Circular, having 4 pillars – Between which there are 3 columns
supporting 4 arches on either side.
PLANNING

9. • Thus there 12 shafts, along with pillars,
supporting 16 arches surrounding the
rock.
• Above this arcade is the high cylindrical
drum on which the dome rests.
• It has been noted that the concentric
arcades are laid out in the figure of an
external circles with radius – 26.87m,
Inside which are inscribed 2 square set at
45° angles.
• The intersecting point of these squares
describes the Inner Circle with radius-
20.56m.
• By connecting them vertically and
horizontally, new intersection are made
describing a circle, which corresponds to
the outlines of the inner arcade with
radius-11.13.
• Through the ritual of circumambulation, the pilgrim experiences the squaring of
the circle, the union of body & soul.
10. • On top of the cylindrical drum,
which emerges from the octagon,
rises the proud dome Gilded copper
roofing
• Dome was made with two wooden
frames, one inside the other.
• Prophet rose from the rock to the
heavens, leaving an imprint of his
foot in the central row.
• The outer shell, slightly raised and
salient.
• Constrains an inner shelf which is
strictly hemispherical
• Use of wood other than stone comes from the Syrian builder.
• This allows creation of light structures, which is span large spaces.
• Is supported by an arcade with alternating black and white arch stones.
THE DOME
11. • The exterior of the octagon was redone
in Polychrome Tiles-blue Colour
dominates.
• Coloured Marbles columns rest on Cube
– Shaped Bases.
• Walls and arcades - mosaics depicting
vines and branches on a gold background.
• Floral compositions are abundant, only
Plant Motifs, no human figures.
• Reused ancient columns capitals with blossoming corbeils
• Instead, the shrine conveys its own message through color and shape.
• In Islamic art, blue, the color of the sky, suggests infinity, while gold represents
the color of the knowledge of God.
• The shape of the dome itself is a powerful symbol of the soaring ascent to
heaven, its circle representing the wholeness and balance essential to the Muslim
faith.
