The Digital Music Production Paradigm • In terms of creativity, the integration of computer hardware & software in mainstream music production is something of a double edged sword - bringing both advantages and disadvantages • Questions: With all this digital sophistication now at our fingertips, are we now making better music? Is fidelity everything? Why do old recordings still endure? Why do some of us still yearn for retro equipment & sound? Does analog sound more human?

Advantages of the Digital Paradigm • The complex affordances of digital tools have provided: – Sample accurate manipulation of the perceivable properties of sound in real time & non-real time (non linear editing & automation) – Undo & Redo Decision in the production process - Time saving previews (help or hinder?) – Seemingly limitless possibilities for the support of creativity with sonic media - so many parameters – New genres and modes of expression with sound: Electronic Music and the gestural control over parameters (via the tactile interface) that affect the perceived properties of sound

Disadvantages of the Digital Paradigm • HCI Studies: Too many affordances in a tool can stifle creativity - complex functionality at the expense of usability – Visual perception dominates attentional processes. A focus on the visual interface can detract from our ability to perceive sound with full attention when working within the digital domain – Listening should always predominate over seeing in the music production process & workflow – Remember, our medium is sound, so attenuate your visual processing in the studio and regulate your attention and interaction with the software interface

The Digital Studio as Instrument • The integrated music production studio is an instrument to support your creativity • You control the tool - Don’t allow the seductive affordances of digital tools to dictate your creative workflow • A wide acceptance of a tool introduces standards • Standards exert a conformist influence on creativity • Resist conformity and seek originality in your approach - your productive output will reflect this • Keep it simple, don’t over complicate a process • Know when to stop working in the digital domain

Tools for the Job • Select the tools for the job - resist long standing attachments to particular tools. • Change direction often to introduce new tools and elements to your workflow • Disrupt your own patterns of interaction with tools - find ways to use them - read the manual, forget the manual • Transcend obsessions with particular tools and the approaches they engender • Always let your creativity regulate your working style and choice of tools
