ABSTRACT
Brazil suffers from high rates of malnutrition, with one in three children aged between five and nine overweight. Brazil is also home to a significant amount of the world’s biodiversity much of it edible and nutritious. As part of the Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition (BFN) initiative funded by the United Nations, Brazil believes that biodiversity for food and nutrition can help fight its current diet-related problems. As such, the government is adopting three approaches to effectively embed biodiversity into the national food and nutritional security policy framework.
The first approach is to increase knowledge of how diverse underutilized native species can contribute to food security by carrying out a nutritional analysis of 70 edible plant species. Three national programmes are exploiting the nutrition potential of some of these species. These include targeting the national school feeding programme to promote healthy eating habits in schools, a scheme which also ensures that 30% of procurement is from local family farmers.
The second approach has been the revision of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan to comply with the Aichi Biodiversity Targets of the Convention on Biological Diversity and to halt biodiversity loss. One of the reasons for biodiversity loss in Brazil is the limited appreciation of the use of biodiversity for food and nutrition to date.
The third approach is to increase awareness on how biodiversity can contribute to food and nutrition. A weekly farmers’ market has been launched at the Brasilia Botanical Garden and several cultural gastronomic events organized in different cities, with cooking demonstrations and opportunities to taste native and nutritious biodiverse foods.

Forests harbour a large number of woody plants, climbers, herbs, insects and wild animals that provide nutritious foods, important for the diets of many people in developing countries.
The International Conference on Forests for Food Security and Nutrition hosted by FAO in May 2013, highlighted the important role of forests, agroforestry systems and trees on farm for food security and nutrition The side event aims at increasing the understanding of the contribution of forests and trees to sustainable diets by sharing lessons from the field.
In this presentation Bioversity International researcher and 'Beyond Timber' project coordinator discusses the traditional management systems of forest-based foods and a case study from the Congo Basin.

We Manage What We Measure: An Agrobiodiversity Index to Help Deliver SDGsBioversity International

Current agricultural intensification practices are the biggest threat to sustainability and a major force behind breaching multiple planetary boundaries (Steffen et al., 2015). Agriculture contributes to between 19 and 29% of total GHG emissions (US EPA 2011, Vermeulen et al. 2012), uses of 69% of freshwater resources (AQUASTAT 2014), and 34% of the terrestrial, icefree surface of the planet accounting for 31% of wild biodiversity loss (Ramankutty et al. 2008). It is the primary driver for the substantial breach of the planetary boundary for phosphorous, and nitrogen (Carpenter and Bennett 2011, Steffen et al. 2015). The foods we produce from these systems struggle to nourish a growing global population where nearly 2 billion suffer from nutrient deficiencies, and another 2 billion suffer from obesity.
In as much as agricultural practices are important parts of the problem, they are likely to be our best bet for novel solutions addressing both human and environmental health. Increasing and improved use of agricultural biodiversity has the capacity provide both food and nutritional security, providing the ingredients of healthy, culturally sensitive, and enjoyable meals.
Mounting evidence suggests that producing food for diversified diets is often complementary with improving agriculture’s sustainability record. Agricultural biodiversity provides the core ecosystem services that underpin sustainable agricultural intensification: pollination, pest control, and sustainably stored and sourced soil nutrients. Finally, as the planet’s largest ecosystem, sustainable intensification of agricultural ecosystems has the capacity to provide multiple ecosystem services converting agriculture from a net source, to net sink of green house gases; reigning in planetary boundaries on phosphorus, nitrogen, and water; and creating a safe space for wild biodiversity .
Achieving agricultural biodiversity’s potential however, requires stronger support of the
research and development community, better articulation of biodiversity’s contribution to
multiple sustainable development goals, and improved indicators and indices that facilitate impact and progress both environmental and human well-being targets.

Presentation of Michel Pimbert, from Conventry University, illustrating agroecology as an opportunity to address the challenges of European and Central Asian food and agriculture. The presentation was prepared and delivered in occasion of the Regional Symposium on Agroecology in Europe and Central Asia, held in Budapest, Hungary on 23-25 November 2016.
While small scale family farmers grow food, and produce 70% of the food in this region, we remain to be poorest, hungriest, mostmalnourished? Why ? First because many of us do not have adequate access , control or ownership of the basic natural resources needed to do farming: land, waters, forests, seeds. Without land rights, we cannot decide what to plant, when to plant, where to market the produce, and in many cases, get only a 30% share of the produce of the farm. Without water rights, the fishes we could have captured in our seas and waters are first captured by big commercial trawlers, leaving so little for the many of us who would like to fish. Without forestry rights, we lose our forests to big mining and logging companies. Without rights to breed, conserve, save and exchange seeds, we will be dependent on the seeds of big and multi-national seed companies..
Second, our yields are low, of inferior quality, and we do not have the money to buy necessary inputs such as seeds, fertilizers or even farm tools or put up needed services such as irrigation, electricity.

• Smallholder farmers
(SHF) are core for the
2030 agenda
• They are at the centre of
several SDGs but mostly
SDG1, SDG2 and SDG15

• Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved
nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture
• Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of
terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat
desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and
halt biodiversity loss

7. Diversification in smallholder farms
• SHF produce a wide range of foods while maintaining
their main staple
• With constrained choices and limited assets, they
diversity their farming systems and take on multiple
economic activities (farm and non-farm activities and
employment), to enhance their income and reduce their
risk from external shocks (climatic and market)
• Diversified production enhances diets, soil fertility and
efficiency in farming activities and spreads the risks
over several crop and livestock products in case of
climatic and biotic shocks (droughts, floods, pests,
diseases), and adverse market prices
8. Importance of pulses in the diversification
and livelihoods of smallholder farming systems
• In crop rotations for soil quality enhancement:
– most of them in rotation with cereals or intercropped with
tuber crops and fruit trees
• As major food sources (dry or green):
– chickpeas, lentils, beans, peas, faba beans, soybean, pigeon peas,
etc
• As animal feed source – seeds or hay:
– soybeans, pigeon peas, vetches, etc
• As source of income sold at the market as grain or
extracted as oil
– dry beans, peas, chickpeas, groundnuts, soybeans, etc
• Legume trees and shrubs (alley cropping, hedges,
intercropping)
– Faidherbia albida (fertilizer tree), leguminous fodder shrubs,
etc.
9. Small farms: positive environmental potential
• Local adapted varieties and landraces, maintaining
genetic diversity. Seed usually self-produced and saved
• Optimal use of internal farm resources: crop residues
as animal feed, manure as fertilizers, straw as storage
and building facilities, local crops as income generating
sources, etc
• External inputs are minimized: limited use of inorganic
fertilizers and pesticides (except where government
policies are supportive) and heavy machinery
• Most small farms are rainfed, especially in Africa and
Latin America, thus limiting the demand on the global
water resources

• Studies show that within their
countries smallholder farmers achieve
higher yields than their larger
counterparts.
• Studies report evidence almost
universally of an inverse relationship
between farm size and productivity
• “Technical efficiency” studies reach
the same conclusion: smallholders are
indeed more efficient and produce
amounts closer to the maximum
output, as compared to larger holders.

11. • At least 1/3 of rural populations
live in less-favoured marginal areas,
hillside or mountainous regions, or
arid and semi-arid drylands
• Most agricultural lands are fragile:
soils, vegetation and landscapes
easily eroded: estimated 5-10

14. Future challenges facing SHF
• Population growth: projected at 9.3 billion in 2050.
– Global production in 2050 should be 60% higher than that of
2005/07.
– ca 70% from yield increase: - has been stagnant for the main
staples
• Climate change: risks and insecurities
• Land tenure and socio-political changes: urbanization,
pastoralists and transhumance movement, community
structure, national boundaries (water scarcity, degraded
rangelands, conflict with sedentary farmers, etc)
15. Future challenges facing SHF
• Land fragmentation – reduced farm size and
economies of scale. Diminishing the comparative
advantage in efficiency of small farms
• Changing market system and sophistication in
standards, regulations and delivery systems
(urbanization and globalization resulting in changes
in food processing and agrifood industries,
procurement systems, etc)
16. Risks of no action
• SHF forced to expansion into more marginal areas or forests,
with the risk of overusing the fragile resource base – entering
the vicious circle of reduced productivity
• Productivity advantage of smallholders is being eroded: due to

• Resulting risk: SHF become marginalized and even more
isolated from the economic environment, instead being part of
the solution and driving the growth process.

• Support to the development of adapted rural finance
products as well as weather and crop insurance products
• Investment in rural infrastructure- irrigation schemes,
soil and water management structures, rural roads, rural
markets and market infrastructure
• Proper policy incentives: supporting productivity
enhancement, environmentally friendly and sustainable,
without affecting the further land fragmentation
19. Conclusions
• SHF function in diverse agro-climatic systems; economies
of their farms depend on their assets, skills and
interaction with their local environment
• Future of SHF is difficult to determine but can be
greatly affected by the government and global policies
• Structural transformations are needed- they are linked
to land size and labour productivity that affect the small
farm as a viable economic unit
• Changes in SHF directly affect rural poverty, hence
poverty in general with major influence on social stability
and direct impact on environment and the fragile natural
resource base
Women comprise an average of 43 percent of the agricultural labour force of developing countries up to almost 50 percent in Eastern and Southeastern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa

Population growth combined with extreme poverty pushes people into more marginal areas, and compels them to overuse the fragile resource base; the results include deforestation, soil erosion, desertification and reduced recharge of aquifers.
Paradoxically, these suboptimal yields push producers further towards unsustainable practices in order to maintain livelihoods.
