The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) designates countries for TPS in cases of ongoing armed conflict, natu- ral disaster, or other extraordinary and temporary conditions that prevent the nationals of those countries who have emigrated from safely return- ing to their home country. The DHS redesignated Haiti for TPS in 2011, emphasizing the gravity of the damage that the earthquake had caused and the severity of one of the world’s worst cholera outbreaks. TPS has been extended for Haiti four times since redesignation.1

Summary of the Event
Port-Au-Prince is the capital city of Haiti located at coordinates 18°32′N 72°20′W. Haiti is an island nation in the Caribbean. The city is located by the sea on the Gulf of Gonave, a deep natural harbor. The city is ringed with hills. The island of Haiti overlies a fault line in the earth’s crust, the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system (Marley, 2005).
Haiti is a 3rd World Country and consequently, the city is a third world city. It has a population of 1,897,846 souls within its boundaries. For a country to be defined as a third world country, it must fulfill at least two of the following three conditions, first, its main source of income is mainly from agricultural or mining activities. Secondly, its education, health and infrastructure sectors must be poorly developed as indicated by high levels of mortality, low life expectancy and high illiteracy levels among the population. Thirdly the per capita income of the population should be less than $1000 per annum. Using this criterion, Port-au-Prince qualifies as a third world city. The main driver of the economy of Port-au-Prince is the export of coffee and sugar thus agriculture is the main driver of the economy of the City. Secondly, the city has only two operational hospitals, which operate at low efficiency. The city has a number of highways but they are poorly maintained and only see limited use. The infant mortality rate is 55 deaths per 1000 live births, a very high number compared to only 6 per 1000 births in other countries. The GDP per capita for the city is $851 per annum. Therefore, port au prince fulfils all three criteria and is therefore classified as a third world country (Tobin, 2013).
The natural hazards that could affect Port-au-Price include Earthquakes, Tsunamis, hurricanes, Landslides, Floods and wild fires (Wade, 2010).
On 12 January 2010 4:53 pm, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Port-au-Prince and it wrecked the city. Several buildings were lost including a number of government buildings such as the legislative palace which housed parliament, the palace of Justice which housed the Supreme Court, the presidential palace, several ministerial buildings, the city’s main hospital , the sea port, and the airport. The death toll was estimated to be about 160,000 people with official government records reporting as high as 220,000 deaths. The government estimated that 250,000 residences were destroyed, 30,000 commercial buildings were brought down, and an estimated 3,000,000 people were affected as a result of the quake (ABC News, 2010).

This paper is divided into two parts. In the first part, I evaluate the resilience and recovery of the case study of Wenchuan by analyzing the knock-on effects of the earthquake on the infrastructure system to propose a strategy for optimizing risk assessment by refining the disaster chain model. In the second part, I begin with a historical review of sustainable development and then use the Japanese post-war housing model as an infrastructure theme to illustrate how engineering can have an impact on it. Finally, I conclude with three propositions based on my own insights into sustainable development from an engineer's perspective: promoting communication and cooperation, taking responsibility, and valuing reginal dignity.

Three days of torrential tropical rains during late August
2002 swelled Costa Rica’s rivers to bursting point.
Landslides swept through the communities of Orosi de
Cartago, killing at least seven people, destroying 17
houses and damaging aqueducts, telephone lines and
power lines. Hundreds had to be evacuated. The Costa
Rican Red Cross deployed 120 people in the search and
rescue operation, which was made extremely dangerous
because of constant, ongoing landslides in the zone
affected.
Following the disaster, the International Federation, sup-
ported by the Regional Delegation in Central America,
obtained funding from the British government to imple-
ment an early warning system in the event of future
landslides. The overall objective was to ‘promote the
development of community organizational and planning
processes for the identification of risks and resources, in
order to prepare for and respond to emergency situa-
tions’.
The intervention
The Costa Rican Red Cross initiated a community
training programme in disaster preparedness and pre-
vention, community first aid and psychological support.
The idea of the early warning system was put to the
community on the understanding that the community
itself would operate and follow through with this sys-
tem. Building materials were distributed to support
structures such as retaining walls and for repairing
drinking-water pipes damaged in the landslide.
Meanwhile, the local authorities established an emer-
gency committee to coordinate disaster response and
rehabilitation activities. This committee convened coor-
dination meetings and followed up on activities in the
affected communities. Radio equipment was installed in
four centres: the Orosi local emergency committee, a
nearby Red Cross base, the national meteorological
institute office and the Rio Macho drinking water river
authority. A warning siren was installed atop the Costa
Rican electricity institute’s communications tower.
Activities were coordinated with local institutions such
as the Catholic church, the Costa Rican institute of elec-
tricity, the community development association, the
chamber of tourism and regional private and state
schools, in order to disseminate information about the
risk reduction measures being undertaken. The Red
Cross committees within the area provided monitoring
and follow-up during the implementation of the early
warning system. Their unique access to affected commu-
nities and institutions involved in the early warning
system made this possible.
The willingness of the communities to participate in
training sessions was very positive. Many female heads
of households, men and children took part. Disaster
awareness materials were circulated to teachers in the
local schools. A training process in the communities was
begun and continues. Results to date are outlined below.

A significant share of energy consumed by rail systems is
used to move the trains [1]. In our opinion, it is necessary to study
carefully the efficiency of freight electric locomotives in different
modes of operation.
Modern freight electric locomotives have a multi-engine
electric traction drive (up to 16 traction motors) with tractive
effort control system on each axle. Therefore, the approach of
the Scalable Power Control Technology [2,3], which regulates the quantity of locomotive traction motors (TM) in traction mode, seems quite reasonable. In our case, if full locomotive tractive
power is not needed within operation, the redundant motors must be automatically switched off [4,5]. But when additional tractive power is required, the locomotive must use sufficient number of motors.
Good daylighting and shading design in urban outdoors not only provides a comfortable luminous environment, but also delivers energy savings and
comfortable environments for surroundings, particularly in the hot arid climate. Yet, it can lead to a reduction in the daylight availability leading to visual
discomfort. According to the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA, 2000, 2011), it is essential that daylight effects be considered in
any space where daylight is admitted, even if it is not exploited as a light source, in order to reduce the need for artificial lighting. Therefore, an analysis
of solar access and shading is necessary for to assure visual comfort underneath the shading tents. This paper attempts to investigate seven different
shading scenarios addressing the solar radiation access underneath, in compliance with ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007 recommendations,
by employing DIVA, which is an integration of Radiance and DAYSIM with thermal load simulation using Energy Plus within [1].
Magnesium carbonate trihydrate, nesquehonite, is proposed as a precursor for the production of a construction material similar to plasterboard,
in a unique carbon capture and utilisation process [1]. The hardening process is thought to follow a similar mechanism to gypsum in the manufacture
of plasterboard, where the hardening is produced in the recrystallization of gypsum crystals. However, nesquehonite [2], during hardening,
converts into hydromagnesite, releasing CO2
and H2
O during the transformation. In this work, samples of nesquehonite were hardened by forcing
their conversion into hydromagnesite in enclosed cubes [3]. The influence of the curing temperature (50 ℃-80 ℃) and time (0-72 hours) on the
compressive strength has been studied and correlated to the conversion of nesquehonite into hydromagnesite [4]. Compressive strength values up
to 6MPa are easily achievable in the studied conditions and it was observed that at higher temperatures time has a detrimental effect on the strength.
The probable overpressure within the cubes, generated by released CO2
and water at the higher temperatures, is thought to be the main cause for
the loss of strength [5].
Road rage is a deeply rooted social problem and has become a
common phenomenon among road users. Over 85% of New South
Wales (NSW) drivers interviewed reported of being a victim of various forms of road rage while this figure is even higher in Brisbane
with 95% [1]. Nine out of ten US drivers believe aggressive drivers
pose a threat to their personal safety while 78% of the drivers report of engaging in aggressive driving at least once in 2014 AAAFTS
[2]. The fact that road rage and aggressive driving is rated above
drink driving as the biggest safety concern reveals the seriousness
of the issue. Road rage can be defined as any hostile act conducted
by a road user towards another road user on the roadway, including
parking lots. These acts involve extreme forms of aggression like
physically assaulting road users (both driver/passenger), vehicles
or both. Road rage has become an easy medium to express anger,
frustration, and the annoyance of everyday conflicts and disagreements on situations arising both on and off the roadway due to
power, ease of escape, anonymity, and protection associated with
vehicles.
Urban transport exchange hubs play a key role as an integral part of the transport networks by facilitating relations between public transport modes but also have a function in the city urban planning and in-service facilities [1]. Time savings, urban integration, better use of waiting times and improved operating models are some of the expected benefits of developing efficient city-hubs [2,3]. However, although interchanges are crucial for improving accessibility, there are still problems remaining such as seams or bottlenecks, which are mainly reported in the coordination between the different transport modes and the use of the information systems and management model. In order to examine a part of these problems, the three years (September 2012-February 2015) City-HUB consortium of nine European research institutes from nine countries belonging to the European conference of transport research institutes (ECTRI) project studied 27 multimodal interchanges [4].
Precipitation, evaporation and runoff patterns are changing, resulting in uncertainty about the security of water supply, the quality of drinking
water, flood management in urban environments and the long-term health of natural ecosystems. The particular aspects for China are described
where, with increasing urbanization, flooding has become a regular occurrence in response, China is developing “sponge cities” to attain resilience to
stormwater. This paper describes a novel technology with significant potential; the principle of the ‘double pipe technology’ which involves placement
of a perforated pipe below a stormwater pipe, encourages passage from the stormwater pipe down to a second pipe, a perforated pipe. This allows
temporary storage in the lower pipe and enhances exfiltration from the lower pipe to the underlying aquifer. A conceptual model of the double pipe
technology is provided, and the results show that the surcharge potential in the stormwater pipe is dramatically decreased. The lower pipe is able to
capture, store, and eventually infiltrate into the groundwater, storm water runoff where the exfiltrate water from the lower pipe 56% to 62% of the
total annual rainfall to be released to groundwater. This would truly enhance groundwater levels and decrease subsidence in areas where this is a major
concern (particularly related to coastal zone cities in China).

CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. The proposed project is developed to manage the automobile in the automobile dealer company. The main module in this project is login, automobile management, customer management, sales, complaints and reports. The first module is the login. The automobile showroom owner should login to the project for usage. The username and password are verified and if it is correct, next form opens. If the username and password are not correct, it shows the error message.
When a customer search for a automobile, if the automobile is available, they will be taken to a page that shows the details of the automobile including automobile name, automobile ID, quantity, price etc. “Automobile Management System” is useful for maintaining automobiles, customers effectively and hence helps for establishing good relation between customer and automobile organization. It contains various customized modules for effectively maintaining automobiles and stock information accurately and safely.
When the automobile is sold to the customer, stock will be reduced automatically. When a new purchase is made, stock will be increased automatically. While selecting automobiles for sale, the proposed software will automatically check for total number of available stock of that particular item, if the total stock of that particular item is less than 5, software will notify the user to purchase the particular item.
Also when the user tries to sale items which are not in stock, the system will prompt the user that the stock is not enough. Customers of this system can search for a automobile; can purchase a automobile easily by selecting fast. On the other hand the stock of automobiles can be maintained perfectly by the automobile shop manager overcoming the drawbacks of existing system.
