This powerpoint was compiled on 14 January just two days after the devastating earthquake to hit Haiti. I have purposely avoided including precise data, aware that things will change as the days pass. The presentation could be used with any year group though it is probably more suited to older students such as those preparing for EDEXCEL's A2 research unit about tectonic activity and hazards. Having seen the presentation students could be asked to explain why the death rate is likely to be so high. There are many direct and indirect factors that could be included.
A presentation given to the Conference of INGOs committee for Democracy, Social Cohesion and Global Challenges on the significance of climate change as one of the complex factors affecting migration.
The conclusion suggests that climat change is a critical factor in all aspects of the work that the Council of Europe is involved in and that environmental issues - especially sustainable development - should be a top priority for its future work
Extraordinary Conditions a Statutory Analysis of Haiti's Qualification for TPSStanleylucas
Since the U.S. government designated Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in January 2010 after one of the world’s worst natural disas- ters, the country has undergone two additional catastrophies: the outbreak of cholera, intro- duced into Haiti’s waterways through reckless sanitation at a United Nations military base, and Hurricane Matthew, the strongest hurricane to hit Haiti in more than half a century. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) designates countries for TPS in cases of ongoing armed conflict, natu- ral disaster, or other extraordinary and temporary conditions that prevent the nationals of those countries who have emigrated from safely return- ing to their home country. The DHS redesignated Haiti for TPS in 2011, emphasizing the gravity of the damage that the earthquake had caused and the severity of one of the world’s worst cholera outbreaks. TPS has been extended for Haiti four times since redesignation.1
Situation analysis of the 2010 floods in Pakistan presented by Naseer Ahmad G...Global Water Partnership
While Pakistan endures one of the country’s most devastating floods—possibly its worst ever—GWP Pakistan is joining with others to help provide relief and rehabilitation to remote communities that have been particularly hard-hit. In addition, the GWP Partner Hisaar Foundation and the Karachi Water Partnership, has launched an appeal to raise Rs 10 million for immediate flood relief, largely for the provision of safe drinking water.
Recognizing the scale of this disaster, GWP has invited the Pakistan delegation to the annual GWP Consulting Partners Meeting to present information on “Integrated Flood Management: analysis of the devastating floods, early recovery and rehabilitation plans” on September 3 in Stockholm, Sweden. The special session will be presented by the chair of GWP South Asia, Sardar Muhammad Tariq, the chair of GWP Pakistan, Naseer Ahmad Gillani, and the Ambassador of Pakistan to Sweden, Nadeem Riyaz. The floods have highlighted the need to place water resources management at the forefront of national development policy.
As part of its response to the floods, GWP Pakistan in collaboration with its Area Water Partnerships will assist in rehabilitation and resettlement, restoration of jobs, and sowing of new crops. The activities planned include:
1. Prepare an early recovery plan
2. Provide hygiene education to the volunteers
3. Identify and rescue flood affected poor people
4. Provide treatment to critical cases
5. Provide tents, water coolers, chlorinating tablets, sleeping rugs, etc.
6. Distribute printed material for prevention of health problems
7. Provide basic sanitation facilities on communal use basis
The Integrated Rural Development Organization of Islamabad, a GWP partner, will monitor and evaluate the activities.
The chair of the Hisaar Foundation, Simi Kamal (former member of the GWP Technical Committee), wrote that in addition to the Rs 10 million appeal, the Foundation is working on a concept of “total water solution” stretching from relief through rehabilitation to post-flood normalcy, and water needs in each of these phases. More information can be found at www.hisaar.org and .www.karachiwaterpartnership.org.

HURRICANE MATHIEU: UN FLASH APPEAL $120 MILLION FOR HAITIStanleylucas
This UN Flash Appeal for USD$ 120 million is to "respond" to the most urgent humanitarian needs of 750,000 Haitians affected by hurricane Matthew. Haitians believed that the head of MINUSTAH, Sandra Honore, will politicized foreign aid in order to delay the elections and influence the results. This belief can lead to instability if nothing is done.

Running head: DISASTER OF PORT-AU-PRINCE 1
DISASTER OF PORT-AU-PRINCE 2
DISASTER OF PORT-AU-PRINCE
Summary of the Event
Port-Au-Prince is the capital city of Haiti located at coordinates 18°32′N 72°20′W. Haiti is an island nation in the Caribbean. The city is located by the sea on the Gulf of Gonave, a deep natural harbor. The city is ringed with hills. The island of Haiti overlies a fault line in the earth’s crust, the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system (Marley, 2005).
Haiti is a 3rd World Country and consequently, the city is a third world city. It has a population of 1,897,846 souls within its boundaries. For a country to be defined as a third world country, it must fulfill at least two of the following three conditions, first, its main source of income is mainly from agricultural or mining activities. Secondly, its education, health and infrastructure sectors must be poorly developed as indicated by high levels of mortality, low life expectancy and high illiteracy levels among the population. Thirdly the per capita income of the population should be less than $1000 per annum. Using this criterion, Port-au-Prince qualifies as a third world city. The main driver of the economy of Port-au-Prince is the export of coffee and sugar thus agriculture is the main driver of the economy of the City. Secondly, the city has only two operational hospitals, which operate at low efficiency. The city has a number of highways but they are poorly maintained and only see limited use. The infant mortality rate is 55 deaths per 1000 live births, a very high number compared to only 6 per 1000 births in other countries. The GDP per capita for the city is $851 per annum. Therefore, port au prince fulfils all three criteria and is therefore classified as a third world country (Tobin, 2013).
The natural hazards that could affect Port-au-Price include Earthquakes, Tsunamis, hurricanes, Landslides, Floods and wild fires (Wade, 2010).
On 12 January 2010 4:53 pm, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Port-au-Prince and it wrecked the city. Several buildings were lost including a number of government buildings such as the legislative palace which housed parliament, the palace of Justice which housed the Supreme Court, the presidential palace, several ministerial buildings, the city’s main hospital , the sea port, and the airport. The death toll was estimated to be about 160,000 people with official government records reporting as high as 220,000 deaths. The government estimated that 250,000 residences were destroyed, 30,000 commercial buildings were brought down, and an estimated 3,000,000 people were affected as a result of the quake (ABC News, 2010).
Roles of Response Agencies
As a result of the 2010 earthquake, Port-au-Prince is in a precarious position with respect to any Natural disaster. Already, the damage that an earthquake can do to the city has already materialized. The whole city, and indeed the country was brought ...

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Another Catastrophic Earthquake in Haiti –– Tropical Grace
On August 14, 2021, early Saturday morning before 8:30 a.m., measuring a magnitude
7.2 earthquake struck the mountains between Nippes and Sud Department in Haiti. The quake
toppled buildings and destroyed homes, cut off communications, and buried residents in the
rubble of collapsed buildings. Thus, this is not the first quake Haiti has been through, however
compare to the 2010 quake killing an estimated 220,000, injuring over 300,000, and more than 1
million mislaid, devastating the nations bustling capital Port Au Prince –– 2021 has been
reported being more powerful than 11 years ago, which killed tens of thousands of people, so far
reported more than 2,000 people have lost their lives so far, and many still missing (Diaz). In this
paper, will be discussing the aftermath damages left by the quake at the country’s most
vulnerable communities that face environmental risks, including environmental geography, and
population and settlement.
As reported by the country’s Prime Minister has declared a state of emergency for one
month as emergency personnel search for survivors and help victims’ relatives. According to
Haiti’s official Seismologist, this is not where the next quake was expected. For the past few
years, Seismic monitoring was carried out at each risk zone and the southern zone was the least
at risk among the 10 geographic zones in Haiti. Thus, where the quake was hit due to the size
and population density there will probably be widespread damage. In this situation, the
environmental condition has turned left, including schools, hospitals, and buildings totaling in an
2. estimate 700 buildings that have collapsed, not only buildings but damages on infrastructure
roads and bridges (Welsh). Before, Tropical Grace stroke Haiti the country has been in recovery
till this day, from the 2010 earthquake and since than there has been additional hurricanes and
earthquakes in the island and with so many disasters and climate change, the population has been
left vulnerable with drought, increased food prices and recent political crisis, this was the last
thing they could wish for (Welsh). As reported by the U.S. Agency for International
Development, arranged for disaster assistance response team to Haiti, to assist with damage
assessments and humanitarian coordination (Welsh). Additionally, urban search, relief
assistances, medical equipment’s, and 52, 000 pounds of saws, torches, drills, and hydraulic
breaking equipment’s (Welsh). Given that, humanitarian needs are rapidly growing in the
aftermath, some of the strategic objectives that have been outlined include, carry out essentials
repairs to restore people’s health, water and sanitation, agriculture, and education infrastructures.
Furthermore, conclusive reports have revealed more than 2,200 deaths, and 12,000
injured but in addition more than 130,000 homes damaged or destroyed, and thousands of
homeless seeking urgent need of assistance (Report). Prior to the earthquake Haiti had pre-
existing needs for thousands– Humanitarian Needs Overview (HNO) 2021 reported that more
than 610,000 people with acute humanitarian needs prior quake in the South, Grande’Anse, and
Nippes (Report). The urge for assistance has left people illegally migrating towards the US-
Mexico border with more than 13,000 under the Del Rio, Texas bridge (Jr). However, since then
4,000 migrants remain under the bridge, while thousands were returned to Mexico and the other
estimate of 3,200 awaiting to be processed in the custody of immigration, as well as that, about
1,400 were arranged back to Haiti (Jr).
3. Moreover, with the recent assassination of Haiti President Jovenel Moise on July 7, 2021,
at his home. Has led to an increase gang-violence with many being displaced, and casing limited
access to healthcare and services. According to reports, 13,600 Haitians fled Port-au-Prince in
June to elude confrontation with rival gangs (Report). And since the quake it’s even more
difficult to provide assistances when the gang violence has raised security threats and road
blockages, making Tiburon Peninsula inaccessible since June (Report). Thus far, ground
transportations were limited because most of the region was blocked more than once and due to
that Humanitarian organizations have been escorted by police to ensure safety.
In summary, Urban Search-and Rescue (USAR) personnel teams such as, emergency
managers, construction riggers, hazardous materials technicians, licensed engineers, etc., was
deployed to Haiti with the (DART) (U.S. Agency for International Development). Additionally,
aircrafts were deployed to support humanitarian needs relief with 671 missions completed and
588,000 pounds of emergency relief commodities assigned to affected areas. Also, 1,747 tons of
foods including, beans, rice and vegetable oil released by USAID/BHA to WFP food assistance
operations (U.S. Agency for International Development). Furthermore, helicopters transported
injured patients to Port-au-Prince, to conduct medical evacuations for 381 people and roughly
34,600 pounds of emergency relief supplies to areas in need (U.S. Agency for International
Development). Lastly, a country that is already vulnerable, the quake only exposed them to more
crisis, when they lack resources to recover from pervious devastation.
