Oceanic transport through Atlantic straits
Romain Bourdallé-Badie, Yann Drillet and Karine Béranger
Introduction
Straits play a special role in ocean circulation. They transform water masses, form currents and allow water to flow from one
basin to another. In the North Atlantic and Mediterranean area simulated using the PSY2V1 analysis and forecasting system,
there are numerous straits more or less determining large-scale circulation throughout the basin. This study focuses on straits in
two areas: the Caribbean Sea, where the Gulf Stream is formed, and the North-East Atlantic where the North Atlantic bottom
waters and Greenland current are formed. The present study is based on the transport of water masses computed by PSY2V1
from October 2001 to June 2003 after having divided up the areas into sections. We take a more detailed look at 2002.

Determination of design discharge and environmental flow in micro-hydropower ...Daniel Ngoma
In designing micro hydropower plants capacity, the amount of water flow discharge determination is very essential in estimating the power output for the micro hydropower scheme due to the fact that in recent years there has been an increase in water demand due irrigation activities because of an increase in agriculture activities [1]. From the literature, there are several methods that are used to determine hydro turbine water flow discharge but the most widely used method is the hydrological method which is based on the formulation of flow duration curve or hydrograph for the respective river flow based on site historical and measured hydrological data.
The hydrograph represents the amount of water flow in m3/s that is available for a particular river or stream in percentage from the historical hydrological data which has been computed over a period of more than one year. From the study of Hhaynu River which is a small river in Tanzania, the computed flow results show that, 8% of the time the flow is at 2.3 m3/s while at 50% of the time the river flow was at 1.86 m3/s and at 100% of the time the water flow was at 0.60 m3/s. When determining design discharge for run-of-river schemes, provision have to be considered for environmental flow on which for the Hhaynu River this has been analysed to be 0.2 m3/s (33.3% of river base flow) which resulted to the hydro-turbine development design water flow discharge of 0.4 m3/s from the computed flow duration curve with provision for environmental flow.
The usefulness of developing flow duration curve for rivers is to determine the available water flow in a particular small river and its suitability for micro hydropower development from estimates of the amount of water flow discharge.
A presentation on the Four Spheres of the Earth and how the Earth systems interact. The Earth system pertains to how we utilize models to look at different sections of the planet in order to characterize what has occurred previously, what is occurring now, and what could occur in the future. The 2011 Japan tsunami and earthquake, also known as the 2011 Tohoku tsunami and earthquake or the Great Tohoku earthquake, which is also analyzed herein, occurred on March 11, 2011 in northeastern Japan. The calamity began in the early afternoon when a magnitude-9 earthquake struck the region, unleashing a massive wave.
The hydrological rate of flow of the watershed of Lake Laya El Hammam depends on its morphometric and geological features as well as its precipitation. The watershed of Lake Laya El Hammam is part of the coastal watersheds in the central-east of Tunisia. It is the only watershed which is not affected by hydraulic constructions such as dams. Besides, it features a surface area that extends to 204 km2 and a high recorded rainfall. To determine the hydrological rate of flow of the watershed, we had to identify its geological and morphometric characteristics, and gauge the flow of Lake Laya El Hammam. The final results have allowed us to identify: the general aspect of the flow of water in the watershed of Lake Laya El Hammam, the relationship lake/ sheet and the importance of gauging in Eastimating the rate of flow of water during periods marked by lack of rain.
Weekly and Monthly Groundwater Recharge Estimation in A Rural Piedmont Enviro...Agriculture Journal IJOEAR
Abstract— La Colacha basin (Córdoba province, Argentina) is a typical piedmont rural area where the unconfined aquifer is used for agricultural activities. The objective of this work is to show the estimation of the recharge (R) rate in the unconfined aquifer, using the water table fluctuation method (WTF). Furthermore, considerations in relation to monthly and weekly recharge rhythms and to the aquifer discharge (D) were performed. The aquifer shows a typical behavior of groundwater recharge areas with an important and quick answer of water table to the arrival of precipitations (P). After that, a recession curve is observed, representing the groundwater discharge to the local base level (the main stream of the basin). The monthly estimation resulted in an annual average R value of 14.3 % of total P. Although the major amounts of recharge occur in full summer, according to the major total amounts of P, the correlation between monthly R and P was low (r2 < 0.2) as a result of the high quantities of rainfall water that are converted into runoff. The regression coefficient is higher (r2 = 0.6) for the end of summer and autumn when rainfalls diminish and have low intensities. This situation provides less water to the aquifer, but the recharge process is more efficient. The ratio R/D for the 3 year series was positive, which means that the aquifer recharge was dominant. In the weekly recharge analysis, the annual average R is slightly lower than in the monthly one, that is, 12.4 % of the total P. Thus, it may be concluded that, in this case, the change from monthly to a weekly time step, did not much improve the final value. However, the information obtained with the weekly estimation is much more useful to interpret the aquifer detailed behavior.

A significant share of energy consumed by rail systems is
used to move the trains [1]. In our opinion, it is necessary to study
carefully the efficiency of freight electric locomotives in different
modes of operation.
Modern freight electric locomotives have a multi-engine
electric traction drive (up to 16 traction motors) with tractive
effort control system on each axle. Therefore, the approach of
the Scalable Power Control Technology [2,3], which regulates the quantity of locomotive traction motors (TM) in traction mode, seems quite reasonable. In our case, if full locomotive tractive
power is not needed within operation, the redundant motors must be automatically switched off [4,5]. But when additional tractive power is required, the locomotive must use sufficient number of motors.
Good daylighting and shading design in urban outdoors not only provides a comfortable luminous environment, but also delivers energy savings and
comfortable environments for surroundings, particularly in the hot arid climate. Yet, it can lead to a reduction in the daylight availability leading to visual
discomfort. According to the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA, 2000, 2011), it is essential that daylight effects be considered in
any space where daylight is admitted, even if it is not exploited as a light source, in order to reduce the need for artificial lighting. Therefore, an analysis
of solar access and shading is necessary for to assure visual comfort underneath the shading tents. This paper attempts to investigate seven different
shading scenarios addressing the solar radiation access underneath, in compliance with ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007 recommendations,
by employing DIVA, which is an integration of Radiance and DAYSIM with thermal load simulation using Energy Plus within [1].
Magnesium carbonate trihydrate, nesquehonite, is proposed as a precursor for the production of a construction material similar to plasterboard,
in a unique carbon capture and utilisation process [1]. The hardening process is thought to follow a similar mechanism to gypsum in the manufacture
of plasterboard, where the hardening is produced in the recrystallization of gypsum crystals. However, nesquehonite [2], during hardening,
converts into hydromagnesite, releasing CO2
and H2
O during the transformation. In this work, samples of nesquehonite were hardened by forcing
their conversion into hydromagnesite in enclosed cubes [3]. The influence of the curing temperature (50 ℃-80 ℃) and time (0-72 hours) on the
compressive strength has been studied and correlated to the conversion of nesquehonite into hydromagnesite [4]. Compressive strength values up
to 6MPa are easily achievable in the studied conditions and it was observed that at higher temperatures time has a detrimental effect on the strength.
The probable overpressure within the cubes, generated by released CO2
and water at the higher temperatures, is thought to be the main cause for
the loss of strength [5].
Road rage is a deeply rooted social problem and has become a
common phenomenon among road users. Over 85% of New South
Wales (NSW) drivers interviewed reported of being a victim of various forms of road rage while this figure is even higher in Brisbane
with 95% [1]. Nine out of ten US drivers believe aggressive drivers
pose a threat to their personal safety while 78% of the drivers report of engaging in aggressive driving at least once in 2014 AAAFTS
[2]. The fact that road rage and aggressive driving is rated above
drink driving as the biggest safety concern reveals the seriousness
of the issue. Road rage can be defined as any hostile act conducted
by a road user towards another road user on the roadway, including
parking lots. These acts involve extreme forms of aggression like
physically assaulting road users (both driver/passenger), vehicles
or both. Road rage has become an easy medium to express anger,
frustration, and the annoyance of everyday conflicts and disagreements on situations arising both on and off the roadway due to
power, ease of escape, anonymity, and protection associated with
vehicles.
Urban transport exchange hubs play a key role as an integral part of the transport networks by facilitating relations between public transport modes but also have a function in the city urban planning and in-service facilities [1]. Time savings, urban integration, better use of waiting times and improved operating models are some of the expected benefits of developing efficient city-hubs [2,3]. However, although interchanges are crucial for improving accessibility, there are still problems remaining such as seams or bottlenecks, which are mainly reported in the coordination between the different transport modes and the use of the information systems and management model. In order to examine a part of these problems, the three years (September 2012-February 2015) City-HUB consortium of nine European research institutes from nine countries belonging to the European conference of transport research institutes (ECTRI) project studied 27 multimodal interchanges [4].
Precipitation, evaporation and runoff patterns are changing, resulting in uncertainty about the security of water supply, the quality of drinking
water, flood management in urban environments and the long-term health of natural ecosystems. The particular aspects for China are described
where, with increasing urbanization, flooding has become a regular occurrence in response, China is developing “sponge cities” to attain resilience to
stormwater. This paper describes a novel technology with significant potential; the principle of the ‘double pipe technology’ which involves placement
of a perforated pipe below a stormwater pipe, encourages passage from the stormwater pipe down to a second pipe, a perforated pipe. This allows
temporary storage in the lower pipe and enhances exfiltration from the lower pipe to the underlying aquifer. A conceptual model of the double pipe
technology is provided, and the results show that the surcharge potential in the stormwater pipe is dramatically decreased. The lower pipe is able to
capture, store, and eventually infiltrate into the groundwater, storm water runoff where the exfiltrate water from the lower pipe 56% to 62% of the
total annual rainfall to be released to groundwater. This would truly enhance groundwater levels and decrease subsidence in areas where this is a major
concern (particularly related to coastal zone cities in China).

Courier management system project report.pdfKamal Acharya
It is now-a-days very important for the people to send or receive articles like imported furniture, electronic items, gifts, business goods and the like. People depend vastly on different transport systems which mostly use the manual way of receiving and delivering the articles. There is no way to track the articles till they are received and there is no way to let the customer know what happened in transit, once he booked some articles. In such a situation, we need a system which completely computerizes the cargo activities including time to time tracking of the articles sent. This need is fulfilled by Courier Management System software which is online software for the cargo management people that enables them to receive the goods from a source and send them to a required destination and track their status from time to time.
