Government Corruption In Canada
A corrupt government can be a severe impediment to the progress of a country.
The main types of corruption as defined by the UN are that of petty and grand corruption. Petty
corruption mostly entails non elected individuals working in public regions of society such as service
receptionists or police officers. Grand corruption deals with elected officials usually in high power
positions. An example of grand corruption could be corruption from the elected members of a country.
Canada ranked ninth with a score of 82 out of 100 on the Corruption Perceptions Index
2016 monitored by a non profit organization called Transparency International. In that report the
average global score out of a 100 was 43. This implies that Canada is doing well amongst the worlds
nations but can do better. Acts of corruption have a significant impact in the country experiencing it.
Therefore reducing the likelihood of corruption is of great benefit to the country of Canada.
Corruption in the Canadian Government is an issue that is relevant to the society of Canada. The
effects corruption has on Canada and the ways Canada chooses to lessen this corruption will be further
explored here.
In recent years various scandals have been brought to the attention of Canadian residents by the
media. Through previous examples, it is evident that scandals have a remarkable impact on the trust of
the average Canadian. One such example is that of the Senate Expense Scandal. In short the Senate

The Human Immune System Is A Complex Defence Mechanism...
The human immune system is a complex defence mechanism that protects the body from harmful
pathogens. Our innate immunity provides humans with a thorough degree of protection, but epidemics
are still common throughout the world. To give an example of scale, over 14 million people die
annually from vaccine preventable diseases. In New Zealand a majority of diseases have been
eradicated, but some such as whooping cough and pneumococcal are still present.
To reduce and stabilize the amount of cases of infected individuals, vaccines are administered to help
our immune systems recognize and counteract harmful microorganisms that cause infection. Due to
their proven effectiveness, the National Immunisation Schedule in New Zealand recommends that
children be immunised for protection from 11 preventable diseases before they are 5 years old. This is
not a mandatory vaccination programme, but is recommended by the Ministry of Health and the World
Health Organisation. It is free of charge and the programme begins when babies reach six weeks of
age.
There are numerous conflicting viewpoints concerning the efficacy of vaccines. Globally, the medical
community tends to agree that they are a safe, effective method of controlling dangerous epidemics.
Incidents such as the MMR vaccine controversy in 1998 (the discredited claim that autism was linked
to the combined vaccine) have tainted vaccines safe image, and the social backlash from that

Negative Social Media
Humans have been creating technology since before 10,000 b.c., beginning with stone tools and
weapons, then advancing as time progressed. The introduction of the internet in the 1980 s eventually
proved to be present in people s daily lives, connecting millions of people online. Roughly 37% of the
world population uses social media sites on a regular basis, allowing them to communicate
instantaneously, while simultaneously making people feel more alone. The use of technology as a
means of communication is detrimental to a person s wellness, as it can cause a myriad of physical
and emotional ailments, which in conjunction make a person more lonely in a social setting. The
internet eliminates the need for face to face contact and makes people more accustomed this new
radical way in which humanity communicates. Behind a phone or computer screen, all characteristics
of innate human communication are destroyed, removing audible, as well as physical cues. The
importance of such is critical and necessary to one s psychological well being and social prowess.
Subsequently, a person s face to face communication skills have been proven to have degraded from
the overuse of social media (Text 3). It is unclear whether people resort to social media due to the
feelings of loneliness, or if social media is the cause, however, those feelings were not alleviated
through social media use. The direct relationship between loneliness and amount of time spent on
social technology can be shown

Reflection Paper on The Republic by Plato
Assignment 1.
Reflection on: the Republic, by Plato.
Greek philosopher, Plato, is considered to be one of the most influential people in Western Philosophy.
The fact that he was a student of Socrates and a teacher of Aristotle leaves no questions about his
competence. One of his fundamental works is the Republic . Even though it was written in 380 BC,
Plato s and Socrates s thoughts are still relevant in twenty first century. This paper will evaluate the
quote from the Republic and provide a summary of a quote; provide a context from the text for the
quote; and finally, it will include my own thoughts on the quote and the Socrates s argument as a
whole.
The given quote is a paragraph from the fourth book of the Republic . It ... Show more content on

According to Socrates, the city is similar to a human being in a sense that it also consists of three
classes: the money making (appetitive), auxiliary (spirit), and deliberative (reason). He claims that the
city is just if, and only if, all these three classes do their own job and do not interfere in one another s
actions. Consequently, a person is just because all 3 parts of his soul are doing their own job,
according to provided analogy.
In my opinion, it is not right to divide the world into just and unjust. Justice itself is subjective, in a
sense that everybody has his own justice. Moreover, not necessarily all three parts should be in
harmony in order to be just. For example, let us imagine that there are two best friends. One of them
has a gun made of gold, and he tells his friend: Could you please hold my golden gun for some time
and give it back to me when I will ask you to do so. The other guy takes the gun and he is willing to
give it back when the time comes. But, the friend, who is the gun owner, becomes angry and wants to
kill his neighbor because he is too loud. After the second friend was informed of it, the first tells him
to give him the gun. In this situation, the friend s reason tells him not to give the gun back, because he
wants to avoid a murder. His will wants to give the gun back, because he must do so. And finally, his
appetites want to hold the gun, because he always

H.P. Lovecraft’s Fascination in Supernatural Theories Essay
H.P. Lovecraft s fascination in supernatural theories plays into a main basis for his novels. (Wohleber)
With the unknown lurking, Lovecraft incorporates horror through the use of psychological fear as a
form of expression making it become crucial for many of his works. At the Mountains of Madness
encompasses this thought by the expeditions before and after effects on the characters. The urge to be
a success fills the scientists up with courage to embark on such a dangerous trip; however, after the
trip the survivors, Danforth and Dyer, had lost all sense of sanity. On our return Danforth was close to
hysterics..promise to say shew our sketches or say anything. (Lovecraft 176.) Their eyes couldn t

The horror felt by the characters in the novel are not those of pain, but simply the fear of knowing the
unsuspected truth hiding just beneath the surface of things. (Wohleber.) Lovecraft s writing goes
beyond what tends to be said as horror by using madness in his characters, suspicion and discovery to
the surroundings and the belief of supernatural beings upon us on Earth.(Wohleber.) Such statements
tamper with the mind because with enough evidence one can only wonder whether situations in life
like that can happen. Throughout the book the confusion only grows more by showing how their
suspicion makes them come up with ideas that didn t even happen. When arriving at base and having
only one person a group of dogs missing while everyone else is dead can only make someone bring up
ideas on who is behind it all. Situations like these tamper with the characters head only leading them
to further insanity. Lovecraft works with the nature of fear in literature. He possesses an understanding
of the psychological basis of horror appeal. (Burleson.) Although it is said he was influenced by Poe,
Lovecraft revised what Poe does in his writings. Poe questions the existence of the characters
themselves while Lovecraft deprives the mental wellness of the characters by questioning what their
eyes and ears see or hear.

Primary Crime Scene Analysis
The primary crime scene provides a very important aspect of the crime and that is presentation. Which
is the location, condition, and position of the body in relation to the actual crime scene. This usually
allows for the homicide detective to gain crucial information about the crime that took place. This
allows for hypothesis early on in the investigation and it allows for the investigator to find information
that is either consist with their case or it confirms inconsistency on whether or not the person was
murdered there or the body was dumped. This is especially important in equivocal death
investigations, which are open to interpretation. There may be two or more meanings and the case may
present as either a homicide or a suicide depending

The Nature of Humans in Lord of the Flies by William Golding
The nature of human: are humans born good or evil? These two opposing views on human nature are
two topics that Rousseau and Golding have both touched upon. While Golding believes that humans
are born inherently evil, Rousseau believes the opposite: that humans are inherently good. Golding
wrote the novel Lord of the Flies as a response of the novel, The Coral Island by R.M. Ballantyne
because he believed that it was far fetched. In this novel Ballantyne s main characters are able to enjoy
their time on the deserted island. My opinion on this matter leans to Rousseau s side. I believe that
people are born naturally good. Jean Jacques Rousseau was born in Geneva in 1712 and died in 1778
in France. While Golding lived through the two World Wars, Rousseau never lived through such
conflict. A topic of Rousseau s that always came up is about how humans can keep their freedom
despite their dependence on one another. He believed that there were two things that had something to
do with this topic and that was a human s material and psychological need and that the latter was more
important. Rousseau believed that humans get their sense of self due to opinion of others. Rousseau
believes that humans are inherently born good and that and that it is society s corruption that causes
humans to be evil. William Golding was born in 1911 in Cornwall, England and died in 1993. William
Golding was born only three years before the start of World War I. Golding lived through both World
Wars

The TransContinental Railroad Essay
The TransContinental Railroad
If any act symbolized the taming of the Northwest frontier, it was the driving of the final spike to
complete the nation s first transcontinental railroad. 1 The first railroad west of the Mississippi River
was opened on December 23, 1852. Five miles long, the track ran from St. Louis to Cheltanham,
Missouri. Twenty five years prior, there were no railroads in the United States; twenty five years later,
railroads joined the east and west coasts from New York to San Francisco.2 No other single factor
contributed more the commercial and social development of the Pacific Northwest than the arrival of
the railroad. For the first time in history, people could get to the west coast in a matter of ... Show

Each railroad was to receive a 200 foot wide right of way and sections of public lands to help finance
construction. The Northern Pacific s charter originally provided ten alternate sections per mile in
states through which it passed and 20 sections per mile in territories. If sufficient lands were not
available within this grant, other sections could be selected as in lieu from a secondary zone which
reached back from the tracks another 20 miles.8 These land grants contributed greatly to commercial
development and growth of towns along the track routes. A fourth railroad was the Southern Pacific,
which was routed from New Orleans to Los Angeles. The Great Northern Railway was the fifth
transcontinental line. The Great Northern, along with the Northern Pacific, had the greatest impact on
developing the northwest. However, unlike the Northern Pacific, it was not a land grand railroad. It
did not obtain federal loans to help in its construction as did the Union

Essay about Google in China
Where is the company most vulnerable, from a communications standpoint? Google entered China in
2006 with high hopes of taking over the Chinese internet market. In order to become a major player
for internet search engines in China, however, they had buckled and filtered search results according
to the Chinese government. When Google.cn was launched, a loud public outcry over its giving in to
the Chinese government on censoring and filtering search engine results, the company faced a
communications crisis. Since Google had always been known for its free thinking, this seemed a vast
contradiction. From a communications standpoint, Google s greatest vulnerability in this crisis lay
with a tarnished public image. Since the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Google s policy of self censorship in China did not sit well with the public or human rights
organizations. Though Google seemed to promote free thinking and free speech on one hand, they
were censoring and filtering with the other. Google lost credibility with the public, thus tarnishing its
public image and loosing 1% of the U.S. market in one month, as reported in The Business. (2006,
Aug) Image credibility is based on the constituency s perception of the organization (Argenti, 2009,
p.39). When the public image of a company has been compromised it can make a huge difference in
determining the success or failure of the organization (Argenti, 2009, p. 40). When the public looses
confidence in a company and what they stand for, they no longer wish to use its product. In response,
executives at Google attempted to convince the public that they could handle the balancing act
between censorship and providing information, and gain back public trust and confidence. Google s
greatest vulnerability in the ordeal with China was damage done to its reputation because we should,
as stated in the Bible, Earn a reputation for living well in God s eyes and the eyes of the people.
(Proverbs 3:4) When running a company it is highly important to preserve good standing because

Kat s Life
The back door slid shut behind her, just as silently as usual. Streaming in through large windows and
the spotless glass wall in the living room, sunlight warmed the house. The house was silent, the
lingering smell of fresh coffee beans and scrambled eggs. Walking across the smooth, pine, hardwood
floors and up the cream colored, just steamed carpets brought back memories, but Phillipa wouldn t

hangings was the old wall, painted, repainted, and still unfinished; a great unrestrained mish mash of
colors that represented Kat s mood. Phillipa was proud to see the many still odorous, bright streaks of
sunsets, and less oceanic, moody splotches. There had been so many of the depressed hues casting
unhealthy opalescent reflections onto Kat s pale, unhealthy skin last year. The rest of the room was a
multitudinous arrangement of various furniture; chairs, modern and antique, gifts from friends and
family, holding memories from years past and present, oak shelves full of creaking leather bound

Code Of Ethics In Managed Care
Managed Care Organizations (MCO) developed to maintain the financial responsibility and the
provision of care by instituiting the gatekeeper mentaliy (Feldman et al. 1998). As primary care
physicians maintained the role of the gatekeeper, issuing referrals to patients as deemed necessary,
physicians also became uncomfortable in the given roles. In the beginning of medicine, physicians
were valued as the most moral member of society. However, as healthcare became more business
oriented with MCOs providing incentives for minimizing care, MCOs lost the morality necessary for
trust in healthcare.
Initially, physicians as a whole were not excited about the reform exhibited by the managed care
systems (Bereson 1991). In the article, Physician

Rappers Vs Griots
Many argue that the past griot s and the rappers of today in Africa, are as different as an apple and
orange. *You have those who believe the foundation of both practices are one hundred percent
different. Everything that makes a griot who they are, is completely the opposite of what shapes an
African rapper. *On contrast, there are also those who presume that the message and way of execution
are the same for both lyracis. *The belief that the two are different, mostly comes from those of older
age, or who have a lineage of griots that backtrack throughout the years. *While those who believe the
opposite, are of younger age and have more modern day experiences. So although socially, the African
griot and rapper are on two different platforms, the message and ways of expression are tantamount,
however, the fundamentals are contrasting. As time progressed and rappers begin to make appearances
in the 1990 s, griots were still in full effect. Just as the griots openly criticize politicians and protest
the conditions of community, rappers do the same. For example, if the issue was unemployment, it

So just as social issues and hymns are performed by the griot and the rapper, they are also done in the

audience. *For example, when singing about a particularly melancholy part of African history, a song
may be presented. This is also exercised by the rappers of Africa. However, sometimes just as a

his telling of the ever changing relations between Iran and the US in 1911. Anasari describes the
apprehension of the US to enter into Iranian relations because there existed no government by the
western perspective. At the time the Iranian Government was largely reliant on other powerful
countries around them. In 1911 the Iranian Government Invited American merchant banker Morgan

ultimately were only in it for said countries benefit from Shuster s perspective. Iran was a struggling
country, the country narrowly escaped European expansion, the Iranian independence was only
maintained because the country had a few politically skilled statesmen. Ansari also describes Iran s

Agent Smith Quotes
I will be asserting, in this argument, through the quotes and actions of Neo and Agent Smith as well as
underlying themes and philosophies throughout the trilogy that, despite what was clearly and
repeatedly implied and stated throughout the trilogy Neo is not actually the savior figure in accordance
with the Oracle s prophecy. Or, rather, that Neo may represent the Messiah to the humans in Zion and
the Matrix, the 1 respectively. However, Agent Smith, the 0 in the integral anomaly, more fully
represent a manifestation of the Oracle s prophecy than even Neo.

Agent Smith is directing and leading the other, presumably nameless, Agents. In the initial

Smith gives a monologue directed at Morpheus emphasizing Smith s desire to get out of the Matrix, in
which he describes things as tasting and smelling. Unusual for a program to describe, as we don t see

Allusions to Nikolai V. Gogol and his short story The Overcoat permeate Jhumpa Lahiri s novel The
Namesake, beginning with Gogol s being the name the protagonist is called through most of the book.
Yet few of the reviewers of the novel mentioned Nikolai Gogol at all in their discussions of the novel,
except to describe the protagonist Gogol s loathing of his name, or to quote without comment or
explanation Dostoevski s famous line, We all came out of Gogol s Overcoat. So far, no one has looked
beyond the surfaces to examine the significance of the allusions to Gogol that are so much a part of
the fabric of Lahiri s novel.

Business internships are helping students gain real world experience while they are not actually out in

blow through it. Internships should be beneficial for the students and the employer s. The internship
program coordinator should look for a few things when they are picking out the companies in which
they are going to send their students to learn and gain experience. First off the firm in which you
might be thinking about going into for an intern must have work for you to do. Sitting behind a desk
all day staring out the window will not teach you anything. It also helps out when there are positive
people surrounding the student intern. For an internship to work, the firm s principals must be
available to supervise and teach. (Berger 30) The student intern will usually have lots of questions and
if there are good people around the intern to answer his or her questions and correct their mistakes
then the internship will be quite beneficial.
There are legal concerns that come along with internships that the

If You Can Not Preach Like Paul
This hermeneutical journey report will highlight the Swing method provided by Nancy Lamers
Grossman in her book, If You Cannot Preach Like Paul. This particular sermon writing process
focuses on the scripture text John1:1 18, and it will be written and preached in a style that reflects
Anna Carter Florence s Testimonial Methodology.
Choosing the Text:
This particular sermon is being prepared for an evening vesper service on the first Sunday of Advent.
This will be the third service of the day for this particular congregation, and it will follow the morning
services, which will have been guided by the lectionary text for that day. For this particular service,
candle light, and light in general, is a main theme. The congregation will sit within the sanctuary, and
the only light will be from the candle light and Advent decoration. Also, this service is to help
congregation members prepare their hearts for the Advent season in its entirety. It is a service that
marks the beginning of an important journey. I chose the passage John1:1 18 in an attempt to meet the
two main needs that this service requires, light imagery and preparation for the coming of Jesus. The
light is significant in this text because the author refers to Jesus being the light for the world that sits
in darkness, which seemed to me to be a great place to start for this particular service. Additionally,
this passage is the gospel text for this upcoming Christmas Daily Text reading. I felt that if this is to

The Resistance Workers Of France
For the Resistance workers of France, gender had a defining impact on the roles and jobs open to
women where they were both utilized and supported. They played a key role in the Resistance of
Vichy France from a scattering of leadership roles, to support roles, to secretarial and liaison work.
These women were galvanized and motivated for different reasons: for the political, to moral, to
patriotic or for the desire to do something. Even women beyond the network of the official groups of
Resistance worked to shelter, protect and support Allies, their communities and Resistance efforts.
Thousands of Women during the war, in the Resistance or not, followed and manipulated the
stereotypes and limitations of women in the era to better service their goals. However these womanly
standards curbed which positions they could fill and what respect they received. In prewar France, the
stereotypical women were the homemakers of the family. Though many were formally educated, few
professional jobs were open to them. After the France s physical and morale collapse in the first
months of World War II, the government propaganda proclaimed a new form of masculinity. A society
built on a foundation of family, gender and biological distinct roles with a male dominated hierarchy.
The antithesis of male ideal being a women who was submissive, ignorant and the home maker. These
feminine ideals and values funneled many women to a support or secondary role in the Resistance. For

whether the clubs really help and keep a majority of their members working towards a beneficial
result. According to statista.com there over a 150 million members to the 187,000 clubs worldwide.
Around the world there are over 2 billion people that are considered obese and that is over 30% of the

themselves. Fitness isn t really raised by the idea of marketing whether it is misleading or not and yes
the dropout rates are higher than most people may believe they are but if someone has the

The Tearoom Trade
Review: The Tearoom Trade Impersonal Sex in Public Places
Laud Humphreys
Humphreys, L. (1970). Tearoom Trade: Impersonal Sex in Public Places. Aldine Publishing Company
Chicago.
Tearoom Trade: the use of a public restroom as a place where men of all varieties go to engage in
homosexual activity. By engaging in such activity they must accept costs and risks of this behaviour,
however will receive a significant reward. As explained in Humphreys book, men involved in the
tearoom game, use these facilities because of the social process that is structured to allow him to have
a sexual encounter without any outside personal involvement with other participants. With the many
rules in Tearooms, men find them much more attractive as it provides a certain protection against his
social image, as this type of behaviour can be seen as very inappropriate and rather illegal. The
Tearoom Trade as a sexual deviant activity.
Laud Humphreys, a sociologist, was dissatisfied with the idea of producing a study so mundane that
only focuses on individuals who engage in deviant activity but nothing about how they participate in
the deviant world. Humphreys found that the idea of deviant behaviour explored in terms of sociology
explains it as organised behaviour that is important to the individuals that engage in the activity, yet
not seen as a subculture. Therefore, Humphreys sets out to analyse the personal significance of the
Tearoom Trade to the participant. And this is the foundation of

Analysis Of The Poem Avec Le Livre Imprime

Theme Of Redemption In Gran Torino
GRAN TORINO
Identify critical moments in the film Gran Torino where Walt Kowalski is transformed from a racist
tormented character to a compassionate father figure.
Gran Torino is a film directed by Clint Eastwood, with Eastwood who is also taking on the key role as
the main character and protagonist; Walt Kowalski. Eastwood plays a retired auto worker and Korean
War veteran who feels emptiness in his life. His character is happiest on his home porch, beer in hand,
dog his only ally, his lawn immaculate, despising the many Asian, Latino and black families in his
neighborhood. However, the redemption of such a character is critical to the storyline as Walt becomes
a reluctant hero, standing up to gang members who have totally unsettled his lifestyle; an attempted
theft of his prized possession, a 1972 Gran Torino, sets Walt on a mission to rectify things for himself
and his Hmong neighbors. Eastwood uses symbolism and cinemograph techniques to exemplify the
theme of redemption. The most notable moment when Walt becomes a father figure, is when he
confronts the gang at their house, just after sue was raped and beaten.
The film explores the possibility of redemption, second chances , and the hope that comes from
having a positive future. Both Walt and Thao experience redemption in the film. Walt is saved from
the guilt of a murderous past as a soldier and the disappointment of broken relationships within his
own immediate family. Ultimately, Walt finds peace with himself, with others and with God. Walt s
young neighbour, Thao is rescued from a future of crime and violence, and the shame of attempted
theft. Ultimately, Thao gains a future as a hard working, respectable American citizen and man. It is
evident from the beginning of the movie that Walt has a hard line attitude towards the church, which is
partly because of the pain and torment he experienced from Korea. Walt exhibits strong racial slurs as
he had strong racial prejudices, also mainly because of the 50 s style of thinking he has and likewise
from the time in Korea, as this is how they talked about them. It is symbolic as he still thought and
spoke like that back after the war, showing the audience that he is still at war, not with the

Similarities And Differences Between The Giver Book And Movie
The Giver is both best selling book by Lois Lowery and a major motion picture. They are both
centered on the same storyline and character but also have some major differences. The movie (and
the book) takes place in the confines of the community, something that started after the ruin, when all
memories were erased and everyone became equal. (Krule, 2014). The book and the movie and the
book are very different in many ways such as the plot, characters and concepts. The book and movie
are more different than they are similar, although there are a few similarities.
The plot of the book and movie follows a similar story line although there are many minor differences.
In both the book and movie the protagonist, Jonas, is about to go through some major changes. The
Elders of the community are selecting job positions for his class. At the selection ceremony the elders
announce each kid s job positon individually. The elders skip Jonas and move on to the next child.
This part of the story is very similar in the book and the movie, Jonas is selected to be The Receiver of
Memories , his job is to receive all the memories of the past and gain wisdom to help the elders of the
community. Some other main plot points that stay the same are Jonas training. The Giver transmits
memories of things such as color and war and emotions, things that no longer exist in the community.
The final major event is very different between the book and the movie. In the book, after learning
about much of the past, Jonas decides that he needs to leave the community to Elsewhere to release
the memories back to the community. In the movie, however, Jonas decided to leave the community
on a spur of the moment decision with little planning or thought. This is very different from the book
where Jonas escape was carefully planned out. One thing that is the same about Jonas escape is that he
takes Gabriel, a baby that is about to be released (Euthanized). The ending of both the book and movie
are the same, Jonas leaves the community and finds a house in Elsewhere . Neither works give much
closure as to what happens, the movie and book leave the reader to decide how the story ends.
The characters of The Giver are very similar but also

The Multi Layered Nature Of Synesthesia

at National Central University in Taiwan describes his neurological condition called synesthesia.1
Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which the stimulation of one sense is automatically

(Simner). Next came the first mention of synesthesia in scientific literature, Sir Francis Galton
published a paper about synesthesia in the journal Nature in 1880.( Guillochon, May,). Soon after this
publication a Swiss medical student named Eugen Bleuler and Karl Lehmann collected data on 76
synesthesia patients and compiled a book that now is considered a milestone in the history of
synesthesia. (Simner). As a whole the scientific community delved into the study of synesthesia in the
late 19th century and the early 20th century, but in the mid 20th century research subsided until the
1970s when the study of synesthesia was revived. (Carpenter). Synesthesia history was one of self
discovery and new studies and data about the condition.
The exact cause of synesthesia although not discovered; at the moment the cause can best be
explained by the hypothesis of serotonergic factors. Scientists do in fact though classify three
categories of how one acquired synesthesia. (Brogaard ). The three categories as follows are
developmental synesthesia, acquired synesthesia, and drug induced synesthesia. (Brogaard).
Developmental synesthesia is the most common type; it is the form of the condition that has continued
since birth or early childhood and is most common in people with autism spectrum disorders.
(Brogaard, Safran, ). Acquired synesthesia is a form of the condition which synesthesia appears after a

The Battle For Hamburger Hill Essay
In 1969, US troops began Operation Apache Snow with the goal of clearing the People s Army of
Vietnam from the A Shau Valley in South Vietnam. Located near the border with Laos, the valley had
become an infiltration route into South Vietnam and a haven for the Peoples Army of Vietnam forces.
A multi phase operation, the second phase commenced on May 10, 1969, as elements of 3rd Brigade
of the 101st Airborne moved into the valley.
Forces were the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry, 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry, and the 1st Battalion,
506th Infantry. These units were supported by the 9th Marines and the 3rd Battalion, 5th Cavalry, as
well as elements of the Army of Vietnam. Don t mean nothing , That was the reference from the
powerful 1987 movie about the battle for Hamburger Hill, more correctly called Ap Bia Mountain also
known as Hill 937. Many soldiers of that May 1969 fight would no doubt agree, since the hill was
abandoned to the enemy soon after it was taken. But the truth is that it was one of the most key and
historical battles of the war, for it spelled the end of Major American ground combat operations in
Vietnam.

  • 2. Government Corruption In Canada A corrupt government can be a severe impediment to the progress of a country. The main types of corruption as defined by the UN are that of petty and grand corruption. Petty corruption mostly entails non elected individuals working in public regions of society such as service receptionists or police officers. Grand corruption deals with elected officials usually in high power positions. An example of grand corruption could be corruption from the elected members of a country. Canada ranked ninth with a score of 82 out of 100 on the Corruption Perceptions Index 2016 monitored by a non profit organization called Transparency International. In that report the average global score out of a 100 was 43. This implies that Canada is doing well amongst the worlds nations but can do better. Acts of corruption have a significant impact in the country experiencing it. Therefore reducing the likelihood of corruption is of great benefit to the country of Canada. Corruption in the Canadian Government is an issue that is relevant to the society of Canada. The effects corruption has on Canada and the ways Canada chooses to lessen this corruption will be further explored here. In recent years various scandals have been brought to the attention of Canadian residents by the media. Through previous examples, it is evident that scandals have a remarkable impact on the trust of the average Canadian. One such example is that of the Senate Expense Scandal. In short the Senate Expense Scandal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Human Immune System Is A Complex Defence Mechanism... The human immune system is a complex defence mechanism that protects the body from harmful pathogens. Our innate immunity provides humans with a thorough degree of protection, but epidemics are still common throughout the world. To give an example of scale, over 14 million people die annually from vaccine preventable diseases. In New Zealand a majority of diseases have been eradicated, but some such as whooping cough and pneumococcal are still present. To reduce and stabilize the amount of cases of infected individuals, vaccines are administered to help our immune systems recognize and counteract harmful microorganisms that cause infection. Due to their proven effectiveness, the National Immunisation Schedule in New Zealand recommends that children be immunised for protection from 11 preventable diseases before they are 5 years old. This is not a mandatory vaccination programme, but is recommended by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation. It is free of charge and the programme begins when babies reach six weeks of age. There are numerous conflicting viewpoints concerning the efficacy of vaccines. Globally, the medical community tends to agree that they are a safe, effective method of controlling dangerous epidemics. Incidents such as the MMR vaccine controversy in 1998 (the discredited claim that autism was linked to the combined vaccine) have tainted vaccines safe image, and the social backlash from that untrustworthy research paper are still ... • 4. Negative Social Media Humans have been creating technology since before 10,000 b.c., beginning with stone tools and weapons, then advancing as time progressed. The introduction of the internet in the 1980 s eventually proved to be present in people s daily lives, connecting millions of people online. Roughly 37% of the world population uses social media sites on a regular basis, allowing them to communicate instantaneously, while simultaneously making people feel more alone. The use of technology as a means of communication is detrimental to a person s wellness, as it can cause a myriad of physical and emotional ailments, which in conjunction make a person more lonely in a social setting. The internet eliminates the need for face to face contact and makes people more accustomed this new radical way in which humanity communicates. Behind a phone or computer screen, all characteristics of innate human communication are destroyed, removing audible, as well as physical cues. The importance of such is critical and necessary to one s psychological well being and social prowess. Subsequently, a person s face to face communication skills have been proven to have degraded from the overuse of social media (Text 3). It is unclear whether people resort to social media due to the feelings of loneliness, or if social media is the cause, however, those feelings were not alleviated through social media use. The direct relationship between loneliness and amount of time spent on social technology can be shown ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Reflection Paper on The Republic by Plato Assignment 1. Reflection on: the Republic, by Plato. Greek philosopher, Plato, is considered to be one of the most influential people in Western Philosophy. The fact that he was a student of Socrates and a teacher of Aristotle leaves no questions about his competence. One of his fundamental works is the Republic . Even though it was written in 380 BC, Plato s and Socrates s thoughts are still relevant in twenty first century. This paper will evaluate the quote from the Republic and provide a summary of a quote; provide a context from the text for the quote; and finally, it will include my own thoughts on the quote and the Socrates s argument as a whole. The given quote is a paragraph from the fourth book of the Republic . It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Socrates, the city is similar to a human being in a sense that it also consists of three classes: the money making (appetitive), auxiliary (spirit), and deliberative (reason). He claims that the city is just if, and only if, all these three classes do their own job and do not interfere in one another s actions. Consequently, a person is just because all 3 parts of his soul are doing their own job, according to provided analogy. In my opinion, it is not right to divide the world into just and unjust. Justice itself is subjective, in a sense that everybody has his own justice. Moreover, not necessarily all three parts should be in harmony in order to be just. For example, let us imagine that there are two best friends. One of them has a gun made of gold, and he tells his friend: Could you please hold my golden gun for some time and give it back to me when I will ask you to do so. The other guy takes the gun and he is willing to give it back when the time comes. But, the friend, who is the gun owner, becomes angry and wants to kill his neighbor because he is too loud. After the second friend was informed of it, the first tells him to give him the gun. In this situation, the friend s reason tells him not to give the gun back, because he wants to avoid a murder. His will wants to give the gun back, because he must do so. And finally, his appetites want to hold the gun, because he always ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. H.P. Lovecraft’s Fascination in Supernatural Theories Essay H.P. Lovecraft s fascination in supernatural theories plays into a main basis for his novels. (Wohleber) With the unknown lurking, Lovecraft incorporates horror through the use of psychological fear as a form of expression making it become crucial for many of his works. At the Mountains of Madness encompasses this thought by the expeditions before and after effects on the characters. The urge to be a success fills the scientists up with courage to embark on such a dangerous trip; however, after the trip the survivors, Danforth and Dyer, had lost all sense of sanity. On our return Danforth was close to hysterics..promise to say shew our sketches or say anything. (Lovecraft 176.) Their eyes couldn t believe what was seen having them debate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The horror felt by the characters in the novel are not those of pain, but simply the fear of knowing the unsuspected truth hiding just beneath the surface of things. (Wohleber.) Lovecraft s writing goes beyond what tends to be said as horror by using madness in his characters, suspicion and discovery to the surroundings and the belief of supernatural beings upon us on Earth.(Wohleber.) Such statements tamper with the mind because with enough evidence one can only wonder whether situations in life like that can happen. Throughout the book the confusion only grows more by showing how their suspicion makes them come up with ideas that didn t even happen. When arriving at base and having only one person a group of dogs missing while everyone else is dead can only make someone bring up ideas on who is behind it all. Situations like these tamper with the characters head only leading them to further insanity. Lovecraft works with the nature of fear in literature. He possesses an understanding of the psychological basis of horror appeal. (Burleson.) Although it is said he was influenced by Poe, Lovecraft revised what Poe does in his writings. Poe questions the existence of the characters themselves while Lovecraft deprives the mental wellness of the characters by questioning what their eyes and ears see or hear. ... This allows for hypothesis early on in the investigation and it allows for the investigator to find information that is either consist with their case or it confirms inconsistency on whether or not the person was murdered there or the body was dumped. • 8. The Nature of Humans in Lord of the Flies by William Golding The nature of human: are humans born good or evil? These two opposing views on human nature are two topics that Rousseau and Golding have both touched upon. While Golding believes that humans are born inherently evil, Rousseau believes the opposite: that humans are inherently good. Golding wrote the novel Lord of the Flies as a response of the novel, The Coral Island by R.M. Ballantyne because he believed that it was far fetched. In this novel Ballantyne s main characters are able to enjoy their time on the deserted island. My opinion on this matter leans to Rousseau s side. I believe that people are born naturally good. Jean Jacques Rousseau was born in Geneva in 1712 and died in 1778 in France. While Golding lived through the two World Wars, Rousseau never lived through such conflict. A topic of Rousseau s that always came up is about how humans can keep their freedom despite their dependence on one another. He believed that there were two things that had something to do with this topic and that was a human s material and psychological need and that the latter was more important. Rousseau believed that humans get their sense of self due to opinion of others. Rousseau believes that humans are inherently born good and that and that it is society s corruption that causes humans to be evil. William Golding was born in 1911 in Cornwall, England and died in 1993. William Golding was born only three years before the start of World War I. Golding lived through both World Wars ... The TransContinental Railroad Essay The TransContinental Railroad If any act symbolized the taming of the Northwest frontier, it was the driving of the final spike to complete the nation s first transcontinental railroad. 1 The first railroad west of the Mississippi River was opened on December 23, 1852. Five miles long, the track ran from St. Louis to Cheltanham, Missouri. Twenty five years prior, there were no railroads in the United States; twenty five years later, railroads joined the east and west coasts from New York to San Francisco.2 No other single factor contributed more the commercial and social development of the Pacific Northwest than the arrival of the railroad. If sufficient lands were not available within this grant, other sections could be selected as in lieu from a secondary zone which reached back from the tracks another 20 miles.8 These land grants contributed greatly to commercial development and growth of towns along the track routes. A fourth railroad was the Southern Pacific, which was routed from New Orleans to Los Angeles. The Great Northern Railway was the fifth transcontinental line. • 10. Essay about Google in China Where is the company most vulnerable, from a communications standpoint? Google entered China in 2006 with high hopes of taking over the Chinese internet market. In order to become a major player for internet search engines in China, however, they had buckled and filtered search results according to the Chinese government. When Google.cn was launched, a loud public outcry over its giving in to the Chinese government on censoring and filtering search engine results, the company faced a communications crisis. Since Google had always been known for its free thinking, this seemed a vast contradiction. Google s policy of self censorship in China did not sit well with the public or human rights organizations. Though Google seemed to promote free thinking and free speech on one hand, they were censoring and filtering with the other. Google lost credibility with the public, thus tarnishing its public image and loosing 1% of the U.S. market in one month, as reported in The Business. (2006, Aug) Image credibility is based on the constituency s perception of the organization (Argenti, 2009, p.39). When the public image of a company has been compromised it can make a huge difference in determining the success or failure of the organization (Argenti, 2009, p. 40). When the public looses confidence in a company and what they stand for, they no longer wish to use its product. In response, executives at Google attempted to convince the public that they could handle the balancing act between censorship and providing information, and gain back public trust and confidence. Google s greatest vulnerability in the ordeal with China was damage done to its reputation because we should, as stated in the Bible, Earn a reputation for living well in God s eyes and the eyes of the people. The house was silent, the lingering smell of fresh coffee beans and scrambled eggs. Rappers Vs Griots Many argue that the past griot s and the rappers of today in Africa, are as different as an apple and orange. *You have those who believe the foundation of both practices are one hundred percent different. Everything that makes a griot who they are, is completely the opposite of what shapes an African rapper. *On contrast, there are also those who presume that the message and way of execution are the same for both lyracis. *The belief that the two are different, mostly comes from those of older age, or who have a lineage of griots that backtrack throughout the years. *While those who believe the opposite, are of younger age and have more modern day experiences. So although socially, the African griot and rapper are on two different platforms, the message and ways of expression are tantamount, however, the fundamentals are contrasting. At the time the Iranian Government was largely reliant on other powerful countries around them. In 1911 the Iranian Government Invited American merchant banker Morgan Shuster to assist a team of the country s economist. In that same scene, Smith gives a monologue directed at Morpheus emphasizing Smith s desire to get out of the Matrix, in which he describes things as tasting and smelling. Unusual for a program to describe, as we don t see either of the other Agent s exhibiting any other form of individuality or human like characteristics in any other scene they are in. Smith s uniqueness extends beyond the increasing individualization and rebellion against his fellow Machines. Let s consider the prophesy which foreshadows the coming of the One, which is considered to be Neo by the human inhabitants of Zion. The prophesy was foretold by the Oracle outlining the characteristics that the humans will be able to attribute to the One, the Prime Program or, as the Architect described it, an Integral ... Gogol and his short story The Overcoat permeate Jhumpa Lahiri s novel The Namesake, beginning with Gogol s being the name the protagonist is called through most of the book. Yet few of the reviewers of the novel mentioned Nikolai Gogol at all in their discussions of the novel, except to describe the protagonist Gogol s loathing of his name, or to quote without comment or explanation Dostoevski s famous line, We all came out of Gogol s Overcoat. Tellingly, the Very Important Person demands, Do you realize, sir, who you are talking to? (Gogol 263), as if he didn t know who he was himself, without its being reconfirmed by other s fear of him. Exposed to the cold once again, the overcoatless Akaky then catches a fever and dies, but this is not the end of the story. Shortly after Akaky s death, a living corpse who looks like Akaky begins haunting the same square in which Akaky was robbed, but this time as a stealer of overcoats rather than as a victim. One of this Akaky s victims is the same Very Important Person who bullied him, who had been mildly regretting his harshness, and who is now frightened into real repentance. The last we hear of Akaky and his ghost is when a policeman sees a burly man whom he takes to be the ghostly overcoat thief, accosts him, and finds instead a man who is clearly not Akaky, but may be the original thief who robbed him. This particular sermon writing process focuses on the scripture text John1:1 18, and it will be written and preached in a style that reflects Anna Carter Florence s Testimonial Methodology. Choosing the Text: This particular sermon is being prepared for an evening vesper service on the first Sunday of Advent. This will be the third service of the day for this particular congregation, and it will follow the morning services, which will have been guided by the lectionary text for that day. For this particular service, candle light, and light in general, is a main theme. The congregation will sit within the sanctuary, and the only light will be from the candle light and Advent decoration. Also, this service is to help congregation members prepare their hearts for the Advent season in its entirety. It is a service that marks the beginning of an important journey. I chose the passage John1:1 18 in an attempt to meet the two main needs that this service requires, light imagery and preparation for the coming of Jesus. The light is significant in this text because the author refers to Jesus being the light for the world that sits in darkness, which seemed to me to be a great place to start for this particular service. Additionally, this passage is the gospel text for this upcoming Christmas Daily Text reading. I felt that if this is to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They played a key role in the Resistance of Vichy France from a scattering of leadership roles, to support roles, to secretarial and liaison work. These women were galvanized and motivated for different reasons: for the political, to moral, to patriotic or for the desire to do something. Even women beyond the network of the official groups of Resistance worked to shelter, protect and support Allies, their communities and Resistance efforts. Thousands of Women during the war, in the Resistance or not, followed and manipulated the stereotypes and limitations of women in the era to better service their goals. However these womanly standards curbed which positions they could fill and what respect they received. In prewar France, the stereotypical women were the homemakers of the family. Though many were formally educated, few professional jobs were open to them. Laud Humphreys, a sociologist, was dissatisfied with the idea of producing a study so mundane that only focuses on individuals who engage in deviant activity but nothing about how they participate in the deviant world. Humphreys found that the idea of deviant behaviour explored in terms of sociology explains it as organised behaviour that is important to the individuals that engage in the activity, yet not seen as a subculture. • 29. Theme Of Redemption In Gran Torino GRAN TORINO Identify critical moments in the film Gran Torino where Walt Kowalski is transformed from a racist tormented character to a compassionate father figure. Gran Torino is a film directed by Clint Eastwood, with Eastwood who is also taking on the key role as the main character and protagonist; Walt Kowalski. Eastwood plays a retired auto worker and Korean War veteran who feels emptiness in his life. His character is happiest on his home porch, beer in hand, dog his only ally, his lawn immaculate, despising the many Asian, Latino and black families in his neighborhood. However, the redemption of such a character is critical to the storyline as Walt becomes a reluctant hero, standing up to gang members who have totally unsettled his lifestyle; an attempted theft of his prized possession, a 1972 Gran Torino, sets Walt on a mission to rectify things for himself and his Hmong neighbors. Eastwood uses symbolism and cinemograph techniques to exemplify the theme of redemption. The most notable moment when Walt becomes a father figure, is when he confronts the gang at their house, just after sue was raped and beaten. The film explores the possibility of redemption, second chances , and the hope that comes from having a positive future. Both Walt and Thao experience redemption in the film. Walt is saved from the guilt of a murderous past as a soldier and the disappointment of broken relationships within his own immediate family. Ultimately, Walt finds peace with himself, with others and with God. Walt s young neighbour, Thao is rescued from a future of crime and violence, and the shame of attempted theft. Ultimately, Thao gains a future as a hard working, respectable American citizen and man. It is evident from the beginning of the movie that Walt has a hard line attitude towards the church, which is partly because of the pain and torment he experienced from Korea. Walt exhibits strong racial slurs as he had strong racial prejudices, also mainly because of the 50 s style of thinking he has and likewise from the time in Korea, as this is how they talked about them. • 31. Similarities And Differences Between The Giver Book And Movie The Giver is both best selling book by Lois Lowery and a major motion picture. They are both centered on the same storyline and character but also have some major differences. The movie (and the book) takes place in the confines of the community, something that started after the ruin, when all memories were erased and everyone became equal. (Krule, 2014). The book and the movie and the book are very different in many ways such as the plot, characters and concepts. The book and movie are more different than they are similar, although there are a few similarities. The plot of the book and movie follows a similar story line although there are many minor differences. In both the book and movie the protagonist, Jonas, is about to go through some major changes. The Elders of the community are selecting job positions for his class. At the selection ceremony the elders announce each kid s job positon individually. The elders skip Jonas and move on to the next child. This part of the story is very similar in the book and the movie, Jonas is selected to be The Receiver of Memories , his job is to receive all the memories of the past and gain wisdom to help the elders of the community. Some other main plot points that stay the same are Jonas training. The Giver transmits memories of things such as color and war and emotions, things that no longer exist in the community. The final major event is very different between the book and the movie. In the book, after learning about much of the past, Jonas decides that he needs to leave the community to Elsewhere to release the memories back to the community. In the movie, however, Jonas decided to leave the community on a spur of the moment decision with little planning or thought. This is very different from the book where Jonas escape was carefully planned out. One thing that is the same about Jonas escape is that he takes Gabriel, a baby that is about to be released (Euthanized). The ending of both the book and movie are the same, Jonas leaves the community and finds a house in Elsewhere .
