Native American Storytelling Lit Paper
Native American Storytelling November 12, 2012 ENG/301 Native American Storytelling Native
American literature is the root of cultural storytelling, which is told through oral tradition, this consist
of stories and songs verbally. Native American literature use literary conventions in the root of myth
and symbolic examples in storytelling. The book Native American Literature: A Brief Introduction and
Anthology gives good insight into the Native American ways of life and how storytelling is a part of
that life. Short stories by Simon Oritz and Luther Standing Bear share life experience and cultural
diversity. The reader can see how historical, social and political, and cultural ways play a role in the

252). Tricksters come in many forms such as Raven, Spider and Coyote are characters in Native
American mythology who represent the underside of human nature (Sinnaeve, 2012). In this literary
critical context, a trickster uses sleight of hand and tongue to evade, manipulate, and subvert the
colonial world (Cox, 2005, p. 252). In the poem My Father s Song written by Simon Ortiz, the poem
speaks of the importance of creation. The creation of life, land, and plantation, the story is about a boy
who is learning to planet corn. We planted corn one spring at Acu we planted several times but this
one particular time I remember the soft damp sand in my hand (Ortiz, 1981/1995, p. 260). Within the
field the boy and his father found a nest of mice, the father showed the boy how to gentle pick them
up, and take them to the end of the field and put them in the shade (Ortiz, 1981/1995, p. 260). The
purpose of literary conventions in storytelling helps to educate the new generation, These stories have
been carried down orally for generations, often by parents teaching their children about fundamental
cultural truths (Sinnaeve, 2012). The Native American people went through many changes throughout
history, social and political, and cultural events. A social and political event was the education of
young Native Americans. In 1879, many Native American children were

Costa Rican Food
Costa Rican cuisine is known for being flavorful, yet fairly mild, with high reliance on fresh fruit and
vegetables. Rice and black beans are a staple of most traditional Costa Rican meals, often served three
times a day; gallo pinto, a breakfast dish of rice and beans mixed together with onions and bell
peppers, is often considered the Costa Rican national dish. For lunch, the traditional meal is called a
casado. It again consists of rice and beans served side by side instead of mixed. There will usually be
some type of meat (carne asada, fish, pork chop, or chicken) and a salad to round out the dish. There
may also be some extras like fried plantain (patacones or maduro), a slice of white cheese, and/or corn
tortillas in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Coffee is usually served at breakfast and during traditional coffee breaks in the afternoon, usually
around 3:00 pm. It has traditionally been brewed in a native Costa Rican drip brew device called a
chorreador. The traditional drinks for lunch are called refrescos naturales, or frescos or naturales for
short, and consist of liquefied fruits diluted in either water or milk and sweetened to taste. They come
in many varieties such as canteloupe, blackberry, strawberry, watermelon, mango, tamarind, passion
fruit, guanabana, cas, and lime. Another popular drink is known as a granizado, a slush drink made of
finely shaved ice and flavored syrup. The most popular flavor is kola. This is not the cola usually
associated with carbonated soda, but a fruity flavored syrup. It is usually served with evaporated
and/or condensed milk on top. The national liquor of Costa Rica, guaro, is made from sugar cane.
Costa Ricans often drink guaro as a shot or mixed with juice or soda. The cost of guaro is very cheap
compared to beer (cerveza) in Costa Rica which has one major beer producer. Imperial is the most
popular beer and is an American style lager that is also available in Light. Pilsen is a Bohemian style
Pilsner produced in Costa Rica. During the 2007 holiday season, a 6.0 version with higher alcohol
content was produced. Due to its popularity, production of Pilsen 6.0 was continued through mid
2008. At that point, it was replaced with Pilsen Red. It has a 5.2%

Sense Of Sesponsibility And Sense And Sensibility
The most relatable novel to Austen s Pride and Prejudice is her earlier novel Sense and Sensibility
written in 1811. The largest comparisons that can be made are the function of screens that shelter, the
distinction of being sensible and having sensibility, as well as the necessity of wealth to determine
character.
According to Sally Palmer, Austen is using fire screens as a symbol for characters who are trying to
shield potentially heated emotional outburst or the intense heat of social discourse that would ruin
evanescent happiness. The two characters that symbolize this would be Mr. Darcy and Elinor
Dashwood of Sense and Sensibility. Darcy wants to protect all he cares about including Mr. Bingley,
his innocent sister Georgiana, and later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author Inger Sigrun Brodey, a reputable JASNA s North American Scholar who is a frequent
speaker at Jane Austen Society meetings, writes in the article Making sense of sensibility. from
Persuasions: The Jane Austen Journal that Marianne Dashwood symbolizes sensibility and her sister
Elinor represents common sense. Marianne shares many similarities with Lydia Bennet, the youngest
daughter in Pride and Prejudice. Both believe their world is naturally good without corruption such as
greed and lust to mar it. Both have foibles that strangers generally are naturally good. However, in
actuality there are very good actors that manipulate the vulnerable. Humans have a way of being
imminently selfish and Austen is depicting it with the characters such as the dastardly Mr. Wickham of
Pride and Prejudice and thoughtless Mr. Willoughby of Sense and Sensibility. Both men affect their
counterparts in a negative way and take advantage of the situation. This creates a bias of distrustful
feelings, that sympathy may be able to heal, but society might think is self absorption. Nonetheless,
pity is created for the poor creatures. In fact, it is sensibility or empathy that is necessary to have a
deeper connection like love or hate, and it is fear of rejection that may be the culprit of a hesitancy to
love. This relates to the larger picture of the transition between the Enlightenment and Romanticism,
sense contrasts sensibility because sense has logic and sensibility is fueled by emotional reactions

Analysis Of Erving s Rip Van Winkle And Mason
In this paper, I will be explaining Washington Erving s Rip Van Winkle and Mason
Locke Weems s Life of Washington cultural, social, and historical context. In the Life of
Washington , Weems shows how George Washington was raised and how he acted as a child.
However, in Rip Van Winkle , Irving tells a story of a man who slept through the Revolutionary
War and wakes to find a new country. These stories show the problem of how the United
States of America was seen in the eyes of foreign countries and how Americans wanted to be seen. In
order to solve this problem, Weems decided to show the people how an
American should act. Irving s solution was to show how the nation appeared to an immigrant by
writing his book in the eyes of an outsider. These solutions can help bring a sense of pride and
recollection to the American people and the world. To begin with, these two pieces of literature hold a
lot of information that will need to be broken down. In Washington Irving s Rip Van Winkle , the main
character, Rip Van Winkle, was a farmer who was a favorite in his little Dutch home town up in the
Catskill mountains. One day while hiking up in the mountains, Rip came upon (unknowingly) the
ghosts of the Dutch explorer
Henry Hudson and his crew who offer him some moonshine that puts him to sleep for twenty years.
When Rip Van Winkle wakes, he comes to find that everything is different. When he gets back to his
town, he finds that he does not

Texting While Driving Research
A recent study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute estimates that texting and driving takes
away from the road for 4.6 seconds, the same amount of time it takes for a car to travel across a
football field at 55 miles per hour. Since there are both positive and negative factors in driving, we are
starting to realize more that driving can be extremely dangerous. This here shows that there are
multiple issues and causes as to why driving is becoming such a problem. Imagine if this was your
family member being at stake for someone else s distractions.(Hypothetical). Driving a motor vehicle
is dangerous no matter what way you try and look at it. Each year it is increasing with fatal crashes.

Many of today s drivers have came in contact with someone under the influence while driving, and if
not will. Whenever one is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they are not only putting their lives
in danger, but others as well. On average there is eight teenagers a day that die from drinking and
driving. Another statistic is that every forty minutes there is someone dying from alcohol impairment.
Being under the influence is a huge distraction. Drinking and driving literally causes one third of
traffic fatalities. Drinking and driving accidents can happen during the day, but they mainly happen
between the hours of midnight and three am. Being under the influence causes huge impairment with
how people think, see, and do. Most of the time if these people were sober they would have more

My Political Philosophy
My Political Philosophy Political Philosophy is typically a study of a wide range of topics such as,
justice, liberty, equality, rights, law, politics and the application of a codified law. Depending on what
the philosophy is, it usually tends to be a very sensitive and a personal ideology that an individual
holds within the reality of their existence. Several of the fundamental topics of political philosophy
shape up the society that we live in as these specific topics and their implementation by the state
ensures a legitimate government. In Political Philosophy, the aforesaid concepts or topics are
evaluated and analyzed with tremendous depth in context to their history and intent. Furthermore, in a
rather colloquial sense, political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is important because inequality causes unrest and brings about interminable turmoil which can
eventually lead to a collapse of a regime or a state. If every human being is given equal opportunities
then the outcome after those opportunities were presented, whether it was success of failure, fully rests
upon the individual s shoulders. In case of failure, the government or any other individual would not
be held accountable. Freedom is another core value that should be given precedence over all other
values and beliefs because it is a mode or a state where an individual is free to speak, act and seek
contentment without the restraint of an outside force. It gives one the notion that anything and
everything is possible. It also encourages free and authentic thought which is fundamental for the
progression of a society. People should be given the freedom to make their own choices and follow
them through without any reluctance or fear that they will be penalized. Of course, the freedom of
thought and expression also comes with a condition, which is, that those thoughts and expressions
should not become a nuisance for others. In other words, those thoughts and expressions should not
have adverse affect for others.

Paper #1
The National Socialist Workers Party employed anti Semitism as an instrument to consolidate its
control over the nation by gradually increasing the emphasis on anti Semitism and gaining immense
emotional support over the course of the year. When the National Socialist Workers Party was first
founded, its focus on anti Semitism was very marginal. Nonetheless, Adolf Hitler was appointed as the
chancellor and marked the end of the Weimar Republic and beginning of the Third Reich in 1933.
Thereafter, the National Socialist Workers Party was able to eliminate the opposing parties and use
anti Semitism as a tool to expand in order to further expand its ... Show more content on

Kristallnacht, also known as the Night of Broken Glass, was a night of organized violent assault on the
Jews on November 9, 1938. Although it appeared to be a spontaneous response to a Jewish teenager s
assassination of a German ambassador in Paris, this event was, in fact, a thoroughly organized attack
on the Jews. As the name of the incident suggests, two day long violent outbreak was detrimental. Not
only were Sturmabteilung set loose to ransacking Jewish stores and homes, civilians also participated
in the series of attacks against the Jews. Over 250 synagogues were targeted; they were destructed,
burned, and vandalized. Moreover, over 7,000 businesses were shattered. Plundered Jewish owned
properties were often redistributed to German citizens. During this massive coordinated attack,
approximately 100 Jews were killed, and approximately 30,000 Jews were sent to concentration
camps, such as Dachau, Buchenwald, and Sachsenhausen. Although brutally treated, the prisoners
were released if they could prove that they were able to emigrate. However, an estimate of 1,000 Jews
ended up dying. After Kristallnacht, Jews clearly became social outcasts; they were aggressively
dissimilated from the society, marginalized from economic interactions, and persecuted from political
activities. Anti Semitism rose

An Analysis of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock Essay
The editors of anthologies containing T. S. Eliot s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock invariably
footnote the reference to Lazarus as John 11:1 44; rarely is the reference footnoted as Luke 16:19 31.
Also, the reference to John the Baptist is invariably footnoted as Matthew 14:3 11; never have I seen
the reference footnoted as an allusion to Oscar Wilde s Salome. The sources that one cites can
profoundly affect interpretations of the poem. I believe that a correct reading of Eliot s Prufrock
requires that one cite Wilde, in addition to Matthew, and Luke, in addition to John, as the sources for
the John the Baptist and Lazarus being referenced. Furthermore, the citation of these sources can help
explain Eliot s allusion to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But though I have wept and fasted, wept and prayed,
Though I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in
upon a platter,
I am no prophet and here s no great matter... (81 83)
The reference is not only to Matthew 14:3 11, but also to Oscar Wilde s Salome, the play upon which
Richard Strauss based his opera Salome. In the biblical account, no motivation is ascribed to Salome
for wanting John the Baptist killed. In the versions by Wilde and Strauss, however, Salome is
passionately in love with the imprisoned John the Baptist, who, because he will not let the temptations
of the flesh corrupt his pure love of God, rejects her advances. Wilde s Salome, determined that if she
cannot have John no one will have John, asks Herod for the Baptist s head on a platter. John the
Baptist spurned Salome s affections while he lived; now that he is dead, Salome lavishes her kisses
upon the cold lips of the bloody corpse head.
Prufrock, too, has had his moments of temptation: he has known the arms already, known them all /
Arms that are braceleted and white and bare / (But in the lamplight, downed with light brown hair!)
(62 64). And these very sources of temptation, these arms that lie along a table, or wrap about a shawl
(67), eventually emasculate Prufrock by rejection:

Art Is An Art Essay
Art is created to make feel you something. Whether it is disgust, rage, devastation or joy, as long as it
is the artist s deliberation, you may call it art, Art is something which is meant to evoke emotion. It is
a representation of what the artist sees. It could be realistic or abstract. Art is a diverse range of human
activities and the products of those activities, usually involving imaginative and technical skills.
Everything you do is an art in some way, like the way you perform an activity is an individual art.
What you see and understand from it is also an art, looking at things from different perspective. When
you talk, how you talk is also an art. So overall there is no such thing as what cannot be an art as
everything is an art itself. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Presentational Devices in Shrek Essay
Presentational Devices in Shrek
In this essay I am going to show the different techniques the director uses and analyse the characters
of Shrek and Lord Farquaad to show how the makers of the film reverse tradition and create an
original and amusing fairytale.
The film opens with peaceful, traditional romantic non diegetic music playing and the voice of Shrek
as a narrator as he reads part of a fairytale book. By using this music and Shrek as a narrator, the
director manages to lead the viewers to believe it is going to be a traditional fairytale and so the
director manages to create a false mood. Then, in an instant, the audience s thoughts are changed as a
large chubby green hand rips a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The painting is a beware of the ogre sign. This differs from a traditional fairytale, and, along with
everything else, portrays Shrek as a more cultured ogre than average.
The director uses colour and body language to suggest that Shrek is a kind ogre. For example the way
he puts his hands on his hips and smiles as he looks at his swamp when he comes out of the toilet, and
Shrek s bright green colour.
After Shrek has planted the sign in the ground it shows the villagers going to try and hunt Shrek.
Shrek sees them coming and instead of running at them and roaring savagely as a traditional ogre
would, he creeps up behind them and follows them. This shows that Shrek has some degree of
intelligence unlike the ogres in traditional fairytales.
Shrek then catches up with the villagers and interrupts them to tell them how bad ogres are. One of the
villagers threatens Shrek with a torch but Shrek just licks his fingers and puts the torch light out. Shrek
then roars savagely at them and they scream and finally freeze on the spot. Shrek then whispers at
them telling them that it is the part where they run away and they all run away. This part in the film
shows that Shrek has the potential to be a traditional ogre.
In this scene the director uses sound, lighting and camera angles to make it more effective. The light
from this scene is

Singapore was also renowned known for its strategic location within South East Asia and capturing
the base would provide a significant boost in capabilities of naval invasions to other islands (Bergland,
2014, Online). Taking over Singapore would have crippled the Allies offensive capabilities within the
South East Asian and Pacific regions while Japan could proceed to invade the oil rich islands of the
Dutch East Indies with much more ease and less fear of counter attack. On the 8th of February 1942,
the Japanese put this strategy into effect and invaded. General Tomoyuki Yamashita, nicknamed The
Tiger of Malaya , was in command of the Battle of Singapore, he and his soldiers were outnumbered
at a one to three ratio. His men were also limited to just two bowls of rice each and 100 rounds of
ammunition a day. Yamashita s strategy, or more famously known as Yamashita s Bluff , was an
ingenious tactic to fool the Allies into believing the Japanese had more troops, supplies and equipment
than what the soldiers really had. Yamashita himself also stated My attack on Singapore was a bluff a
bluff that worked. I had 30,000 men and was outnumbered more than three to one. I knew that if I had
to fight for long for Singapore, I would be beaten. That is why the surrender had to be at once... (Ron

The Sex Chromosome ( X And Y ) Originates From A Pair Of...
INTRODUCTION:
The Sex chromosome(X and Y) originates from a pair of autosomes (H.J. Muller, 1914) about
350million years ago in reptile like ancestors (Charlesworth, 1991; Graves, 1995). Environmental
factor like temperature determines sex in some species e.g. crocodiles and turtles (Bull et al, 1975). In
humans, there are 22 pairs of chromosomes called the Autosomes and one pair of sex chromosome (X
Y) which makes a total of 23pairs of chromosomes. These 23pairs (46) chromosomes are contributed
by female and male gamete. Females have 22pairs of autosomes and one sex chromosome (X) while
males have Y sex chromosome in addition to the 22pairs of autosomes. This means that, the Y
chromosome can only be inherited paternally (Lahn Page, 1999).
The X chromosome is about a 165mega base in size and contains about 1000 functional genes (Ross et
al, 2005) while Y chromosome is about 65mega base in size with about 178genes (Skalestsky et al;
2003).The Mammalian Y chromosome contains 86 genes which code for specific proteins with
peculiar functions in sex fertility (Lahn Page, 1997). The Y chromosome is the most evolving part of
the human and chimpanzee genome. The Y chromosome is far superior in the evolutionary progress
than the entire human genetic code combined (Dr Page, 2001). The Y chromosome is said to be the
smallest chromosome in humans and contain more genes with mutation (Heinkchen, 2005).
The Primitive Y chromosome was found in Papaya (Liu et al, 2004) and the Y

The Actions Of Vitamin D Other Than Those On Bone
Essay: Discuss the actions of Vitamin D other than those on bone.
Abstract: Vitamin D (VD) is known to be involved in absorption of calcium in the gut with deficiency
in VD playing a part in many bone related disorders like rickets and osteoporosis. Less known are the
other beneficial health effects VD may have. VD has shown to have a positive effective on the
immune system by not assisting the innate and adaptive immune response, but by also dulling the
autoimmune response. This may be important in fighting disease like TB where VD deficiency is an
issue. There also appear to be mechanisms that assist disease states such as cardiovascular disease,
cancer and diabetes that VD may assist in however these studies are inconclusive and further study is
required.

Vitamins are essential molecules needed by the body for normal growth and development
(Nlm.nih.gov, 2014). One such vitamin is the fat soluble Vitamin D (VD) which assists in the
absorption of calcium and exists in 2 forms, Vitamin D3 (VD3) and Vitamin D2 (VD2) (Nlm.nih.gov,
2014; Garg, Lubel, Sparrow, Holt Gibson, 2012). VD3 is primary sourced for humans is its synthesis
in human skin, with 7 dehydroxycholesterol being converted to VD3 on exposure to UV light, usually
from sunlight. VD3 can also be obtained from some animal sources like egg yolk or oily fish whereas
VD2 is obtained from plant sources, with the VD referring to the summation

Persuasive Speech On Table Etiquette
As kids, most of us would have heard our parents ranting chew your food properly or keep your

course from other basic mannerisms that enabled us to act like mature adults for a major part of it.

Nobody likes to be a part of a conversation with flying breadcrumbs coming at them at supersonic
speeds. This holds true even when you are at a fast food place. Do one thing at a time, either eat or

Where does the napkin go?
Where to place the napkin creates quite a bit of confusion. You pick the napkin unfold it to your side,
not over the table or your plate. Fold it in half and place it on your lap with the loose ends away from
you. If you need to use the napkin to wipe your mouth, you just lift the top half of the fold and gently
wipe any spills.
The napkin never gets back onto the table right through the meal. It is placed back on the table only
when you are finished eating. If you have to excuse yourself between courses, you can scrunch the
napkin and leave it on your seat. Do not leave it on the table.
Fork it right
Most people mess this one up. If you are not used to eating with cutlery at home, then you ll be
struggling when you have to use it. Remember, to always hold the fork in your left hand and use the
right hand for the knife. This eases the process of cutting your food into smaller pieces and allows you

Raymond Loewy s Influence On The Modern World Essay
Raymond Loewy was born in France, in the city of Paris in 1893. This however wasn t Loewy s place
of work, as Loewy made his way in industry in America. It was here Loewy was going to become one
of the most influential designers of his time in the world, and it would be there where Loewy would
create a brand which would become known around the western world. From Coke bottles to trains, to
space stations Loewy has been involved in a wide range of industrial design and could be argued to be
the most famous and influential industrial product designer to date.
At the age of Fifteen Loewy designed a model aircraft which he then built and flew; this won him the

Conservative has the biggest population at approximately forty percent. Reform is the second largest
near thirty percent. Orthodox Jews believe that the Torah is written true and believes in the divinity of

original sense, but as dynamically encouraged. Reform Jews believe that the Torah is a document

Should the Internet Replace the Book As the Chief Tool of...
At present, the Internet and other technology are well developed and keep improving. People use those
new tools to do everything, and try hard to make human life easier and more perfect. From business to
finances; industry to entertainment; services to education, the use of the Internet has increased and
become more mainstream. Some people believe that the Internet and other electronic technology can
replace all kind of jobs that humans do, including teaching students with screens and keyboards
instead of books. They emphasize that the Internet can help people interact to each other beyond the
barrier of distance, so books are somehow not necessary in human lives. However, in my opinion, this
idea cannot be more ridiculous. Books are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
. . . all it needs is light, a human eye, and a human mind (2008, ¶ 2). On the other hand, generally
speaking, the publishing process for the book is more stringent and credible than online resources. As
people realize the fact that the Internet is so open and free that everyone can write anything on the
web, a great amount of misleading information have been circulated for perusal around the network. It
is a great challenge to distinguish which of them is true or credible; however, information from books
is basically, generally believable. One of the reasons for this is that people can easily find out who the
author and publisher are of a book. In contrast, an article from a web page may have trouble to prove
its credibility. In short, the Internet cannot always provide valuable message and information that
respects to intellectual property rights. Therefore, people should keep using book as the chief tool of
learning. Another important reason why the Internet and other technology should not replace the book
is that the use of the Internet and other technology may be a travers of developing social skills. It has
been confirmed by sociologists and anthropologists that the face to face communication between
people is too important to be ignored in the society. To be honest, it is

The Buddhist Temple of Chicago practices one of the most popular sects of Buddhism in Japan called
Jodo Shinsu, also known as Pure Land Buddhism (Shotō 1). Instead of stressing the Eight Fold Path,
as traditional Theravada Buddhists do, Pure Land Buddhists chose to interpret the teachings of the
Buddha more freely (Wangu 1). Furthermore, Pure Land Buddhists seek guidance from Amitabha
Buddha, a deity figure from Mahayana Buddhism (Wangu 1). As the current ruler of the Western

he made a vow claiming that if he attained Nirvana, he will help those who seek his name reach

Failure Of The Schlieffen Plan During World War I
The Schlieffen Plan What the Schlieffen Plan Was This is a vast oversimplification but the Schlieffen
Plan was Germany s plan to invade France and Russia during WW1. It was conceived in 1903 by
Germany s Chief of staff Alfred Von Schlieffen and was revised in 1905 almost 9 years before the war.
Why it Failed There are three main reasons the Schlieffen Plan failed. The first being the invasion of
France through Belgium this wouldn t have been a problem if for one reason; Belgium was allied to
one of the major European powers the British. They couldn t have invaded anywhere else due to
Frances incredibly militarized border with the Germans. The second reason being that the Schlieffen

Example Of Monopoly In Monopoly
Do you think Indian Railway is an example for monopoly market? What are the types of price

Introduction
Indian railway is one of the best example for showing monopoly. In economics, monopoly exists when
delivery of a particular product or service is completely controlled by an individual or an enterprise.
Indian Railways is the state owned railway company of India having more than 64000 Kilometres of
track and 6909 stations. Indian railways has a position, which is not possible in perfectly competitive
markets, where it can charge different price to different group of consumers for an identical product,

Dna Discovery Essay
As the instructions for all living cells, DNA is a complex molecule and the basis of biology. The
structure of DNA is the same for all organisms. (Fredholm, 2003) The journey to understanding DNA
began in 1866 when Augustinian monk Gregor Mendel discovered the basic principles of genetics.
Although the scientific community did not fully appreciate or credit his work in his lifetime, Mendel is
now considered the father of genetics. Mendel s advanced experiments with pea plants between 1856
and 1863 identified the existence of dominant and recessive traits. He unknowingly described genes as
the invisible factors for providing a predictable phenotype. Although credited to American English
duo James Watson and Francis Crick, the next ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rosalind Franklin s work using X ray diffraction also led to the discovery of the DNA structure for
which Watson, Crick and Maurice Wilkins shared Nobel Prize recognition in 1962. (Pray, 2008) Her
work included establishing the water content of DNA using X ray crystallography and fuzzily
revealing the pattern of a helical structure with Photography 51. (Fredholm, 2017) Franklin was the
first person to view DNA, but since she was a woman credit was not granted in her name. She also did
not qualify to receive the Nobel Prize as she died 4 years earlier, in April 1958. The Hungarian born
American biochemist Erwin Chargaff contributed in solving the mystery regarding the four
nitrogenous bases of DNA. In 1949, he showed that amounts of these bases are always balanced, even
if different organisms had different amounts of DNA. This specified a 1:1 ratio of purine to pyrimidine
base in each nucleotide and creates a consistent width throughout the DNA molecule. (Fredholm,
2003) Adenine and guanine are larger, double ringed purines. Thymine and cytosine are smaller
pyrimidines. Adenine will only bond with a thymine in DNA; cytosine only to guanine. The
complementary bases are paired together with hydrogen bonds. (BiologyWise, 2017) Chargaff s rules
were solidifying insight for Watson to recognize a helix outside of smooth sugar phosphate backbone
and congruent lengths of A T and C G bonds in February 1953.

Infections Are Common Among Medical Settings
MRSA is considered to be nosocomial infections which are infections that occur within 48 hours of
being admitted to a hospital but recently the newest term for these conditions are healthcare associated
infections (HAISs)(book). The majority of these infections are common among medical settings
because they provide an ideal environment for development and transmission. These infections can be
transmitted by contaminated hands of healthcare providers, contaminated instruments, and urinary
catheters. All these microbes allow easy entrance into the body and invasive surgeries can help with
the spread of diseases because they are an open access point to the body. Methicillin resistant
staphylococcus aureus is one of the most concerning healthcare associated infections because it is
resistant to more than one antibiotic. It is associated with surgical wound, urinary tract, and blood
stream infection and has a possibility of causing respiratory infections (book). Over the last 20 years
MRSA has spread into the community and has been associated with the recent high antibiotic use,
sharing contaminated person items, living in crowded settings, and poor hygiene. This form is
different in the fact that it can be treated with alternate antibiotics.
Medical professionals that have to deal with diseases such as MRSA should use contact precautions to
prevent of spreading the disease to other patients or employees. Radiographers that are dealing with
contact diseases should always wear

The Concept Of Leadership And Leadership
Thought Item 2 (Option 1)
In today s society the concept of leadership provides a structure for decisions to be made within teams,
organizations, and businesses. The notion that only leaders should be credited for the success or
failure carried out by their teams has been instilled in our minds since we first understood the concept
of hierarchies. The fact that most business schools even posses a required leadership course proves the
significance of this concept within today s society. While it is astounding how essential the idea of
leadership has become, it is important for us to begin looking at leadership under a new light:
leadership does not exist without followers because the followers themselves are the true leaders. It is

The amount of work that the head of a team puts into a project is quite small compared to the total
amount of work applied by everyone associated with the completion of the task. When defining the
significance of roles within organizations, it is important to factor in the composition of the culture as
a whole. Many people credit the creation of an organization s culture to the head of the organization.
While this single leader may define how they envision the culture to be, the members as a whole truly
develop the culture. This insight allows us to shift our focus from the leader to the followers. As a
society, by accepting the fact that followers are our true leaders, we are bound to endure many positive
and negative consequences resulting from the implementation. Followers will likely feel more
empowered to make more decisions because they will be receiving more recognition for their work.
This increase in empowerment will cause followers to be more productive within their roles, which
will lead to a harder working society as a whole as more and more organizational structures follow
suit. Another positive aspect of following this new approach is that we will steer away from the great
amount of negative consequences created by single leaders due to the current composition of
leadership. For businesses, less money will be allocated towards executives because they will no
longer make as much money solely off of their title within

Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves , left the mouth of the once prominent
advocate for the abolishment of slavery, former president of the United States, and revolution pioneer,
Abraham Lincoln, in his quest for the independence of slaves throughout the nation. Mark Twain s
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn expresses the American experience and captures the same idea of

This coincides with the idea of an American experience for Huck as he is considered hip and daring
for leaving town and his stagnant lifestyle in pursuit something greater, something new, something
that young adults like him would not have considered during that time. As he escapes without
direction Huck encounters Jim, a slave who has also fled his captivity in pursuit of liberation. Huck
befriends the slave and the two venture down the Mississippi River, embarking on a journey in which
they face violence, distress and episodes of lost hope. A large change that we the readers view during
the time Huck and Jim spent together on the river, is Huck s perception of slavery. After conversing
with and getting to know Jim, his values, beliefs and dreams, Huck begins to truly believe that slaves
like Jim are not as society paints them to be, that they too are humans with feelings and deserve rights
equal to a white man. It is through Huck s change of heart and development of character that Twain
suggests a new way of thinking for future generations of Americans, as they experience more places,
people and cultures.
Twain also employs the character Jim to convey the American experience , despite him falling short of
many opportunities that free, white Americans were able to have during this time.

Questions and Answers on Criminal Procedure
1. Does the information included in the warrant application amount to Probable Cause? Why or why
not? Probably not. This would be defined as an anticipatory search warrant, but the information
provided by the confidential informant includes statements that are mostly vague: Dory was planning
to sell Golden Starfish within an open ended date, she probably will deliver the stolen merchandise at
some point, and she usually rents a room at the specific hotel named. None of this qualifies as reliable
recent information as to criminal activity; as for proposed or future criminal activity, there are not
sufficient facts here to indicate an event that would be sufficient to qualify as a triggering condition .
According to the US Supreme Court s decision in U.S. v Grubbs (2006), what is required in an
anticipatory search warrant is a triggering condition that would permit the execution of the warrant on
the fair probability that contraband would be discovered if the search were executed no such condition
appears to be included here, when the best that is offered for a triggering condition is that Dory has
rented a room. The fact that the detective overheard mention of the Golden Starfish through the door is
irrelevant to the establishment of probable cause for the warrant, though. 2. Of what significance, if
any, is the two week period for serving the warrant? Ordinarily a search warrant cannot be served if
stale information is included in the search warrant

Analyzing M. Night Shyamalan s After Earth
Danger is real, but fear is a choice. As intriguing and captivating as this catch phrase sounds, the film
as a whole may not fit that classification. While M. Night Shyamalan s After Earth (2013) is
ineffective in reaching some of its audiences as anticipated, others seem to have enjoyed the movie
thoroughly. The film opens with a promising story where humans are forced to escape a polluted Earth
inhabited by an alien race that is trained to exterminate them and retreat to Nova Prime, a new home,
to find refuge. General Cypher Rage, played by Will Smith, plays a fearless warrior who has superior

A generic plot is a major reason for that. After Earth in the end proves to be a misfire at the box office
because of its dry and predictable story. M. Night Shyamalan is known for having twists in his stories,
but this film does not seem to follow that successful formula, and it eventually costs him. Throughout
the film, only three major things happen: a plane crash, Kitai running to retrieve the beacon, and a
fight that brings the movie to an end. Evidently, it is not possible to say that the film has no high
points, but as soon as it looks like the storyline is progressing, it ended and moved on to the next
scene. There is an instance in the film where Kitai is running from lethal dogs. When suddenly they
fence him from all corners; this build up turns into a that s it moment when Kitai escapes through a
little gap between the trees. Shyamalan seems to find little loopholes that he can use to save some time
instead of thinking of a more innovative way to get through obstacles. As soon as evening took over
Earth, the temperature drops rapidly. Kitai is fast asleep in the midst of the jungle, not knowing of the
danger that surrounds him. Nonetheless, this dangers does not prove to be a big deal for Shyamalan
because in a matter of seconds a gigantic bird appears and protects Kitai under its wings. When the
situation appears most intense, Shyamalan resorts to a convenient solution to get the characters out of
threatening situations. Because of this, the film does not

The Theories Of Gestalt Psychology
Development of Gestalt Psychology Phrases such as seeing the forest from the trees and the whole is
greater than the sum of the parts have roots grounded in the same ideals of Gestalt psychology. These
phrases best describe the purpose of Gestalt psychology in how they emphasize focusing on the big
picture and not just the colors. The Gestalt concept of perception is how the mind understands the
world around it by seeing it in whole forms, not simple elements. The human brain and consciousness

Musical notes when observed as whole produce complex and wonderful melodies. The notes alone do
not hold the same effect and take away value of the complete melody if only heard as individual tones.
When breaking such abilities down into elements, the value of the ability was being lost in the eyes of
Gestaltists. With psychology moving towards the molecular approach in studying consciousness and
behavior, the Gestaltists used a molar approach. (Hergenhan Henley, 2014). The origin of the word
Gestalt comes from Germany. According to Ginger (2007), the real meaning of the word is richer and
more complex, and is impossible to translate . The best comparison to English is configuration or form

The Recording Of Sound Recorded By Edouard Leon Scott De...
Since its infancy during the nineteenth century, the art of sound recording has been profoundly
affected in countless ways by inventors, scientists, and sound engineers. From the invention of the
phonograph to the computers of today, they have all made contributions to the foundation of sound
recording. Going forward, technologists in today s computer age are becoming more and more
creative. There has even been proof that some researchers have had a hand in altering the course of
history. With that in mind, the following questions need to be addressed:
How was the recording of sound discovered?
What technologies were implemented to improve the science?
How has today s digital age affected sound recording?
Was history really altered?
Is there any debate?
How was the recording of sound discovered?
According to history, the first sound was recorded mechanically by Édouard Léon Scott de Martinville
(de Martinville) in 1857 on a machine called the phonautograph (and). His device would record sound
by using a vibrating membrane that was attached to a pen (stylus) which drew a line in
correspondence to sound waves onto a smoked paper roll attached to a rotating drum (and). The
sounds were generated by vibrating diaphragm and a series of levers that moved the diaphragm from
side to side (and). Even though de Martinville was able to duplicate sound, his machine was not able

understand what the poem is about.
My reaction to the poem Otherwise was different after I read it a couple of times. In the poem, it
repeats the line, It might have been otherwise (Kenyon). The first time I read the poem I thought she
wanted her life to be different. I felt that she was explaining what she does everyday and that she
wanted to change things up, especially in the last line when it says, But one day, I know, it will be
otherwise. I started thinking about my life and when I leave to go to Michigan State in the spring that
there is going to be change that I can t wait for. I want change in my life, instead of doing the same
thing everyday and I felt that was what the poem was about. Then I read it a few more times and the
meaning of the poem became much more different.
The second and third time I read the poem my reaction was the opposite. I realized she doesn t want
her life to change; she is explaining what she does everyday because she wants every day to be like
that. It says, I ate cereal, sweet milk, ripe, flawless peach...All morning I did the work that I love.
When she describes the peach as flawless and that she loves her work, I saw it was more about her
realizing how good her life is and that she doesn t want those days to change.
The meaning of the last line that says, But one day, I know, it will be otherwise changed for me and
the feel of the poem changed as well. After finding out what the poem really was about, the poem
became sad for me instead of a more exciting feeling which I had the first time. It is almost as if she
knows something bad is going to happen and that she only

Unanimous Verdict vs. Majority Rules Verdicts
The use of a jury is the traditional method within the common law for deciding the facts in any dispute
between parties. The role of a jury is to determine question of fact. The jury is in a powerful method
because ultimately, it determines whether a person is guilty or innocent. In civil cases, the main
function of the jury is to find the facts having regard to the evidence, and assess damages. The number
of jurors used in a civil trial is less than that used in a criminal trial. Another important difference is
that the verdict does not have to be unanimous, meaning that a judge will accept a majority decision of
a civil jury.
Unanimity has long been considered as essential and fundamental part of jury trials. Unanimous
decisions refer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Personal Statement On Childhood Is The Best Time Of One s...
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
There is a consensus that childhood is the best time in one s life, where a person not only learns new
things faster and grows but also realizes innocently what he likes and what makes him happy. I used to
love visiting my Aunt s place during my vacations in school days and during one such stay she took
me to her office the All India Radio station. The huge antennas, the towers and the equipment left me
intrigued but the most curious catch was the way my aunt could talk to or tune songs to millions of
listeners around the country, simply by sitting in one closed room. I was in the 7th grade then and didn
t understand intricacies of the complete system but the basic idea behind it inspired me since then to
reach out into that technology. This incident was like a spark to the fire that I have in me now and I
want to fuel it even further by pursuing the .........
Inspiration and guidance make a good disciple. Apart from professional schooling, my mother, a
graduate in computer science always told me about new trends in computer networking and helped me
develop an interest in this technology. I opted for and majored in Science and used it as a step to gain
fundamental knowledge to pursue engineering in Electronics Telecommunication. My undergraduate
coursework included subjects like Mobile Communications, Wireless Networks, Computer Networks,
Broadband Communication systems. All these subjects were of my interest and I was always in the top

Haiti is located in the Caribbean, sharing the island of Hispaniola with Dominican Republic to the
east, with which it also shares nearly 390 km of border. The results of the last census, indicates that
the total population is 10.9 million inhabitants. Port au Prince is the country s capital and it is situated
in the coast of the Gulf of Gonave. This paper will address Port au Prince as the Metropolitan Area,
which is comprised by six municipalities, better known as communes: Delmas, Cité Soleil, Tabarre,
Carrefour, Pétion Ville, and Port au Prince. (Direction des Statistiques Démographiques et Sociales,

Within the unprecedented challenges posed by the explosive growth of urban population, the lack of
water supply and sanitation is one of the most urgent and harmful issues. The relationship between
water supply and cities welfare is very important, as cities require a huge supply of fresh water, and in
turn, the way in which the city makes use of water has an impact on the availability of fresh water. It is
impossible to consider a city as being sustainable , if it cannot ensure safe access to drinking water and
suitable sanitation to its habitants. (Naciones Unidas, 2010)
Before the earthquake in 2010, the water and sanitation situation was already very troubling. The

Essay on The Effects of Divorce
The Effects of Divorce
Divorce in our society has become increasingly common. Fifty percent of all marriages will end in
divorce and each year 2 million children are newly introduced to their parents separation, (Monthly
Vital Statistics Report ).
Demographers predict that by the beginning of the next decade the majority of the youngsters under
18 will spend part of their childhood in single parent families, many created by divorce. During this
confusing period of turmoil and high emotional intensity, the child must attempt to understand a
complex series of events, to restructure numerous assumptions and expectations about themselves and
their world. He or she may be uprooted to a new school, city or neighborhood leaving their ... Show

The role of the child becomes one of warding off the serious depression that threatens the parents and
holding the parent together. Wallerstein calls these children the overburden child . They accounted for
15 percent of the children in her study. Many become angry at being trapped by the parent s demands,
at being robbed at their separate identity and denied their childhood. They are saddened, sometimes
beyond repair, at seeing so few of their own needs gratified, (p. 41). Judith Wallerstein also found that
divorce has long lasting psychological effect on many children, one that in fact, may turn out to be
permanent. Children of divorce have vivid memories about their parens separation. The details are
etched permanently in their minds, more than any other experiences in their lives. She also identified
the sleeper effect as another long term implication of divorce. It is a delayed reaction to an event that
happened many years earlier, (p.60). She saw many young women with acute, delayed depression
which she defines as the sleeper effect and warns of it s danger. It occurs when many young women
are about to make decisions that have long term implications for their lives. Due to the different
studies that have been followed out and the research that I have done, I expect to find many changes in
children both short and long term due to the divorce of their parents. I expect that these long

Confidentiality And The Common Law Of Confidentiality
In this essay I am going to discuss confidentiality. The common law of confidentiality says that people
have a right to expect that information given to a healthcare professional is only used for the reason it
was given but also that it will not be disclosed without permission (The nursing times, no date). The
important concept is of trust, without which no relationship can develop or be sustained between a
patient and a nursing practitioner.
Baillie and Black (2015. p27) stated that in practice, confidentiality is a legal obligation derived from
statute law and case law and it will also usually be included in the contract of employment as a nurse,
with a specific link to disciplinary procedures if breached. Although it is important that a nurse makes
sure that the information they share is legitimate, this is not absolute as there are a number of
exceptions. The Data Protection Act(1998) states that a nurse must inform the patient of the
circumstances under which their information will be shared and that this is necessary in order for the
best treatment to be given. According to the NMC(2010), all nurses must respect individual rights to
confidentiality and keep information secure and confidential in accordance with the law and relevant
ethical and regulatory frameworks, taking account of local protocols. They must also actively share
personal data with others when interest of safety and protection override the need for confidentiality.

Analysis of Shirley Jackson s The Lottery Essays
Shirley Jackson s famous short story, The Lottery, was published in 1948 and remains to this day one
of the most enduring and affecting American works in the literary canon. The Lottery tells the story of
a farming community that holds a ritualistic lottery among its citizens each year. Although the text
initially presents audiences with a close knit community participating in a social event together on a
special day, the shocking twist at the work s end with the death of the lottery s winner by public
stoning has led to its widespread popularity, public outcry and discussion, and continued examination
in modern times (Jackson). One potential critical theory that can be applied to Jackson s The Lottery is
the reader response ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Louise Rosenblatt notes, there are three key terms associated with reader response theory: the ideal
reader, the actual reader, and the implied reader. The ideal reader may be defined as one who is an
informed reader ... an audience that the author may have purposefully intended to read the text (Parker
317 318). The actual reader, meanwhile, is little more than the actual audience encountering the text,
while the implied reader is based on the notion of implicit assumptions of what audiences know and
do not know. For The Lottery, then, it is logical to suppose that Shirley Jackson may have thought an
ideal reader as one capable of analyzing works for close reading or deeper subtexts, while an implied
reader would be one who is unaware of the plot s surprise ending. Although reader response theory
may tend to focus on the reader s interpretation of the text, it does not discount the writer s sense of
authorship, the social, historical, or even political context surrounding a given work of literature, or
the text itself. In brief, The Lottery tells the story of an annual summer drawing that initially appears
innocent to the reader, but becomes more tension filled and ultimately dangerous as the short story
continues. By the end of the piece, it is revealed that the lottery is not a fortunate winning at all, but an
ancient ritual in which a group of relatively modern townspeople end up stoning the chosen woman
(Jackson). The author,

Four Perfect Mate Traits
The four perfect mate traits
Everyone has their own idea of what the perfect mate is. Those who are ready to take relationships
seriously, think long and hard about the characteristics someone possesses before they make
commitments to them. Some may be looking for a spouse that will always make them laugh, or
someone who s a good listener. While both of those can be good traits to have, I look at finding a
spouse on a much deeper level. Here are the top four traits that are most important to me. Although I
am an open minded person and respectful of all views, my perfect mate will have to have the same
religious views as me. This is important to me, because I do take Christianity seriously, and I want to
be able to share that with my future ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When people first start dating, they have the spark , and always work extra hard to impress the other.
A lot of times, after they ve been together for years, they get comfortable and just stop trying to do
better, for their spouse but also for themselves. I want my mate and I to constantly grow together and
do our very best to be the best we can be. Lastly, as cheesy as it may sound, I want him to be my hero.
Yes, I said it, my hero. All of my life, I ve been very independent and never the kind to ask for help. I
want my mate to know me for the stubborn, hard headed woman that I am, and swoop in and lend a
hand whenever I need it without even being asked. He doesn t have to be superman, he doesn t have to
make lots of money, but I want him to care so much, that he will stop at nothing to bring me
happiness. The perfect mate for me isn t made up of superficial qualities. I m just looking for qualities
from the heart. As I said, marriage is teamwork, so I will bring him as much happiness as he brings
me. I firmly believe that our Christian values that we ll share will be the most important part of our
relationship together. When we both actively seek God, and make Him the center of our relationship,
we will succeed

Descriptive Essay On Fitness
Chillin with Dillon As I knocked on the heavy, black door to our local fitness center, I stood and
waited as a woman put down her dumb bells and made her way over to the door to let me in. The
moment I entered the gym I immediately noticed the smell of rubber mats and disinfectant spray. I sat
quietly in the single black chair placed by the door, watching a few people silently do their workouts,
as I waited for Jess Dillon to be done with her last client of the day so we could talk. Soon, a small,
petite woman, who seemed no taller than 5 3 walked out of the back room wearing black workout
pants along with a light pink tank top. She had her short, dark hair up in a ponytail and met my gaze
with a soft smile. I immediately recognized her as Jess and followed her out of the gym. We walked
through a brown door placed on the far west side of the fitness center which led to the lobby area
outside of her private lessons studio. It was clean and had a calming aroma. There was a single
wooden table with four matching chairs placed around it. Jess sat down very comfortably on the far
side of a table, talking with ease from the very beginning. Jess is an outstanding woman in our small
community due to her hard worth ethic, belief in others, and confidence to overcome any obstacle she
faces. Jess wasted no time as she began to explain everything she was active in throughout our
community. The small town she has grown to love provided her with the opportunity to be the

Native American literature use literary conventions in the root of myth and symbolic examples in storytelling. The book Native American Literature: A Brief Introduction and Anthology gives good insight into the Native American ways of life and how storytelling is a part of that life. Short stories by Simon Oritz and Luther Standing Bear share life experience and cultural diversity. Tricksters come in many forms such as Raven, Spider and Coyote are characters in Native American mythology who represent the underside of human nature (Sinnaeve, 2012). In this literary critical context, a trickster uses sleight of hand and tongue to evade, manipulate, and subvert the colonial world (Cox, 2005, p. 252). In the poem My Father s Song written by Simon Ortiz, the poem speaks of the importance of creation. The creation of life, land, and plantation, the story is about a boy who is learning to planet corn. We planted corn one spring at Acu we planted several times but this one particular time I remember the soft damp sand in my hand (Ortiz, 1981/1995, p. 260). Within the field the boy and his father found a nest of mice, the father showed the boy how to gentle pick them up, and take them to the end of the field and put them in the shade (Ortiz, 1981/1995, p. 260). The purpose of literary conventions in storytelling helps to educate the new generation, These stories have been carried down orally for generations, often by parents teaching their children about fundamental cultural truths (Sinnaeve, 2012). • 3. Costa Rican Food Costa Rican cuisine is known for being flavorful, yet fairly mild, with high reliance on fresh fruit and vegetables. Rice and black beans are a staple of most traditional Costa Rican meals, often served three times a day; gallo pinto, a breakfast dish of rice and beans mixed together with onions and bell peppers, is often considered the Costa Rican national dish. For lunch, the traditional meal is called a casado. It again consists of rice and beans served side by side instead of mixed. There will usually be some type of meat (carne asada, fish, pork chop, or chicken) and a salad to round out the dish. There may also be some extras like fried plantain (patacones or maduro), a slice of white cheese, and/or corn tortillas in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Coffee is usually served at breakfast and during traditional coffee breaks in the afternoon, usually around 3:00 pm. It has traditionally been brewed in a native Costa Rican drip brew device called a chorreador. The traditional drinks for lunch are called refrescos naturales, or frescos or naturales for short, and consist of liquefied fruits diluted in either water or milk and sweetened to taste. They come in many varieties such as canteloupe, blackberry, strawberry, watermelon, mango, tamarind, passion fruit, guanabana, cas, and lime. Another popular drink is known as a granizado, a slush drink made of finely shaved ice and flavored syrup. The most popular flavor is kola. This is not the cola usually associated with carbonated soda, but a fruity flavored syrup. It is usually served with evaporated and/or condensed milk on top. The national liquor of Costa Rica, guaro, is made from sugar cane. Costa Ricans often drink guaro as a shot or mixed with juice or soda. The cost of guaro is very cheap compared to beer (cerveza) in Costa Rica which has one major beer producer. Imperial is the most popular beer and is an American style lager that is also available in Light. Pilsen is a Bohemian style Pilsner produced in Costa Rica. During the 2007 holiday season, a 6.0 version with higher alcohol content was produced. Due to its popularity, production of Pilsen 6.0 was continued through mid 2008. • 4. Sense Of Sesponsibility And Sense And Sensibility The most relatable novel to Austen s Pride and Prejudice is her earlier novel Sense and Sensibility written in 1811. The largest comparisons that can be made are the function of screens that shelter, the distinction of being sensible and having sensibility, as well as the necessity of wealth to determine character. According to Sally Palmer, Austen is using fire screens as a symbol for characters who are trying to shield potentially heated emotional outburst or the intense heat of social discourse that would ruin evanescent happiness. The two characters that symbolize this would be Mr. Darcy and Elinor Dashwood of Sense and Sensibility. Darcy wants to protect all he cares about including Mr. Bingley, his innocent sister Georgiana, and later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author Inger Sigrun Brodey, a reputable JASNA s North American Scholar who is a frequent speaker at Jane Austen Society meetings, writes in the article Making sense of sensibility. from Persuasions: The Jane Austen Journal that Marianne Dashwood symbolizes sensibility and her sister Elinor represents common sense. Marianne shares many similarities with Lydia Bennet, the youngest daughter in Pride and Prejudice. Both believe their world is naturally good without corruption such as greed and lust to mar it. Both have foibles that strangers generally are naturally good. However, in actuality there are very good actors that manipulate the vulnerable. Humans have a way of being imminently selfish and Austen is depicting it with the characters such as the dastardly Mr. Wickham of Pride and Prejudice and thoughtless Mr. Willoughby of Sense and Sensibility. Both men affect their counterparts in a negative way and take advantage of the situation. This creates a bias of distrustful feelings, that sympathy may be able to heal, but society might think is self absorption. Nonetheless, pity is created for the poor creatures. In fact, it is sensibility or empathy that is necessary to have a deeper connection like love or hate, and it is fear of rejection that may be the culprit of a hesitancy to love. This relates to the larger picture of the transition between the Enlightenment and Romanticism, sense contrasts sensibility because sense has logic and sensibility is fueled by emotional reactions ... • 5. Analysis Of Erving s Rip Van Winkle And Mason In this paper, I will be explaining Washington Erving s Rip Van Winkle and Mason Locke Weems s Life of Washington cultural, social, and historical context. In the Life of Washington , Weems shows how George Washington was raised and how he acted as a child. However, in Rip Van Winkle , Irving tells a story of a man who slept through the Revolutionary War and wakes to find a new country. These stories show the problem of how the United States of America was seen in the eyes of foreign countries and how Americans wanted to be seen. In order to solve this problem, Weems decided to show the people how an American should act. Irving s solution was to show how the nation appeared to an immigrant by writing his book in the eyes of an outsider. These solutions can help bring a sense of pride and recollection to the American people and the world. To begin with, these two pieces of literature hold a lot of information that will need to be broken down. In Washington Irving s Rip Van Winkle , the main character, Rip Van Winkle, was a farmer who was a favorite in his little Dutch home town up in the Catskill mountains. One day while hiking up in the mountains, Rip came upon (unknowingly) the ghosts of the Dutch explorer Henry Hudson and his crew who offer him some moonshine that puts him to sleep for twenty years. When Rip Van Winkle wakes, he comes to find that everything is different. When he gets back to his town, he finds that he does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Texting While Driving Research A recent study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute estimates that texting and driving takes away from the road for 4.6 seconds, the same amount of time it takes for a car to travel across a football field at 55 miles per hour. Since there are both positive and negative factors in driving, we are starting to realize more that driving can be extremely dangerous. This here shows that there are multiple issues and causes as to why driving is becoming such a problem. My Political Philosophy My Political Philosophy Political Philosophy is typically a study of a wide range of topics such as, justice, liberty, equality, rights, law, politics and the application of a codified law. Depending on what the philosophy is, it usually tends to be a very sensitive and a personal ideology that an individual holds within the reality of their existence. Several of the fundamental topics of political philosophy shape up the society that we live in as these specific topics and their implementation by the state ensures a legitimate government. This is important because inequality causes unrest and brings about interminable turmoil which can eventually lead to a collapse of a regime or a state. If every human being is given equal opportunities then the outcome after those opportunities were presented, whether it was success of failure, fully rests upon the individual s shoulders. In case of failure, the government or any other individual would not be held accountable. Freedom is another core value that should be given precedence over all other values and beliefs because it is a mode or a state where an individual is free to speak, act and seek contentment without the restraint of an outside force. It gives one the notion that anything and everything is possible. It also encourages free and authentic thought which is fundamental for the progression of a society. People should be given the freedom to make their own choices and follow them through without any reluctance or fear that they will be penalized. Of course, the freedom of thought and expression also comes with a condition, which is, that those thoughts and expressions should not become a nuisance for others. In other words, those thoughts and expressions should not have adverse affect for others. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When the National Socialist Workers Party was first founded, its focus on anti Semitism was very marginal. Although it appeared to be a spontaneous response to a Jewish teenager s assassination of a German ambassador in Paris, this event was, in fact, a thoroughly organized attack on the Jews. As the name of the incident suggests, two day long violent outbreak was detrimental. Not only were Sturmabteilung set loose to ransacking Jewish stores and homes, civilians also participated in the series of attacks against the Jews. Over 250 synagogues were targeted; they were destructed, burned, and vandalized. Moreover, over 7,000 businesses were shattered. Plundered Jewish owned properties were often redistributed to German citizens. During this massive coordinated attack, approximately 100 Jews were killed, and approximately 30,000 Jews were sent to concentration camps, such as Dachau, Buchenwald, and Sachsenhausen. Although brutally treated, the prisoners were released if they could prove that they were able to emigrate. However, an estimate of 1,000 Jews ended up dying. • 10. An Analysis of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock Essay The editors of anthologies containing T. S. Eliot s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock invariably footnote the reference to Lazarus as John 11:1 44; rarely is the reference footnoted as Luke 16:19 31. Also, the reference to John the Baptist is invariably footnoted as Matthew 14:3 11; never have I seen the reference footnoted as an allusion to Oscar Wilde s Salome. The sources that one cites can profoundly affect interpretations of the poem. I believe that a correct reading of Eliot s Prufrock requires that one cite Wilde, in addition to Matthew, and Luke, in addition to John, as the sources for the John the Baptist and Lazarus being referenced. (81 83) The reference is not only to Matthew 14:3 11, but also to Oscar Wilde s Salome, the play upon which Richard Strauss based his opera Salome. In the biblical account, no motivation is ascribed to Salome for wanting John the Baptist killed. In the versions by Wilde and Strauss, however, Salome is passionately in love with the imprisoned John the Baptist, who, because he will not let the temptations of the flesh corrupt his pure love of God, rejects her advances. Wilde s Salome, determined that if she cannot have John no one will have John, asks Herod for the Baptist s head on a platter. John the Baptist spurned Salome s affections while he lived; now that he is dead, Salome lavishes her kisses upon the cold lips of the bloody corpse head. Prufrock, too, has had his moments of temptation: he has known the arms already, known them all / Arms that are braceleted and white and bare / (But in the lamplight, downed with light brown hair!) (62 64). And these very sources of temptation, these arms that lie along a table, or wrap about a shawl (67), eventually emasculate Prufrock by rejection: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Presentational Devices in Shrek Essay Presentational Devices in Shrek In this essay I am going to show the different techniques the director uses and analyse the characters of Shrek and Lord Farquaad to show how the makers of the film reverse tradition and create an original and amusing fairytale. The film opens with peaceful, traditional romantic non diegetic music playing and the voice of Shrek as a narrator as he reads part of a fairytale book. By using this music and Shrek as a narrator, the director manages to lead the viewers to believe it is going to be a traditional fairytale and so the director manages to create a false mood. This differs from a traditional fairytale, and, along with everything else, portrays Shrek as a more cultured ogre than average. For example the way he puts his hands on his hips and smiles as he looks at his swamp when he comes out of the toilet, and Shrek s bright green colour. After Shrek has planted the sign in the ground it shows the villagers going to try and hunt Shrek. Shrek sees them coming and instead of running at them and roaring savagely as a traditional ogre would, he creeps up behind them and follows them. This shows that Shrek has some degree of intelligence unlike the ogres in traditional fairytales. Shrek then catches up with the villagers and interrupts them to tell them how bad ogres are. One of the villagers threatens Shrek with a torch but Shrek just licks his fingers and puts the torch light out. Shrek then roars savagely at them and they scream and finally freeze on the spot. Shrek then whispers at them telling them that it is the part where they run away and they all run away. This part in the film shows that Shrek has the potential to be a traditional ogre. In this scene the director uses sound, lighting and camera angles to make it more effective. The light from this scene is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Singapore was also renowned known for its strategic location within South East Asia and capturing the base would provide a significant boost in capabilities of naval invasions to other islands (Bergland, 2014, Online). Taking over Singapore would have crippled the Allies offensive capabilities within the South East Asian and Pacific regions while Japan could proceed to invade the oil rich islands of the Dutch East Indies with much more ease and less fear of counter attack. On the 8th of February 1942, the Japanese put this strategy into effect and invaded. General Tomoyuki Yamashita, nicknamed The Tiger of Malaya , was in command of the Battle of Singapore, he and his soldiers were outnumbered at a one to three ratio. His men were also limited to just two bowls of rice each and 100 rounds of ammunition a day. Yamashita s strategy, or more famously known as Yamashita s Bluff , was an ingenious tactic to fool the Allies into believing the Japanese had more troops, supplies and equipment than what the soldiers really had. Environmental factor like temperature determines sex in some species e.g. crocodiles and turtles (Bull et al, 1975). In humans, there are 22 pairs of chromosomes called the Autosomes and one pair of sex chromosome (X Y) which makes a total of 23pairs of chromosomes. These 23pairs (46) chromosomes are contributed by female and male gamete. Females have 22pairs of autosomes and one sex chromosome (X) while males have Y sex chromosome in addition to the 22pairs of autosomes. This means that, the Y chromosome can only be inherited paternally (Lahn Page, 1999). The X chromosome is about a 165mega base in size and contains about 1000 functional genes (Ross et al, 2005) while Y chromosome is about 65mega base in size with about 178genes (Skalestsky et al; 2003).The Mammalian Y chromosome contains 86 genes which code for specific proteins with peculiar functions in sex fertility (Lahn Page, 1997). The Y chromosome is the most evolving part of the human and chimpanzee genome. The Y chromosome is far superior in the evolutionary progress than the entire human genetic code combined (Dr Page, 2001). The Y chromosome is said to be the smallest chromosome in humans and contain more genes with mutation (Heinkchen, 2005). The Primitive Y chromosome was found in Papaya (Liu et al, 2004) and the Y ... Abstract: Vitamin D (VD) is known to be involved in absorption of calcium in the gut with deficiency in VD playing a part in many bone related disorders like rickets and osteoporosis. Less known are the other beneficial health effects VD may have. VD has shown to have a positive effective on the immune system by not assisting the innate and adaptive immune response, but by also dulling the autoimmune response. This may be important in fighting disease like TB where VD deficiency is an issue. There also appear to be mechanisms that assist disease states such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes that VD may assist in however these studies are inconclusive and further study is required. ¬¬____________________________________________________________________________ Vitamins are essential molecules needed by the body for normal growth and development (Nlm.nih.gov, 2014). One such vitamin is the fat soluble Vitamin D (VD) which assists in the absorption of calcium and exists in 2 forms, Vitamin D3 (VD3) and Vitamin D2 (VD2) (Nlm.nih.gov, 2014; Garg, Lubel, Sparrow, Holt Gibson, 2012). VD3 is primary sourced for humans is its synthesis in human skin, with 7 dehydroxycholesterol being converted to VD3 on exposure to UV light, usually from sunlight. Although the scientific community did not fully appreciate or credit his work in his lifetime, Mendel is now considered the father of genetics. Many people credit the creation of an organization s culture to the head of the organization. As a society, by accepting the fact that followers are our true leaders, we are bound to endure many positive and negative consequences resulting from the implementation. Followers will likely feel more empowered to make more decisions because they will be receiving more recognition for their work. This would be defined as an anticipatory search warrant, but the information provided by the confidential informant includes statements that are mostly vague: Dory was planning to sell Golden Starfish within an open ended date, she probably will deliver the stolen merchandise at some point, and she usually rents a room at the specific hotel named. None of this qualifies as reliable recent information as to criminal activity; as for proposed or future criminal activity, there are not sufficient facts here to indicate an event that would be sufficient to qualify as a triggering condition . According to the US Supreme Court s decision in U.S. v Grubbs (2006), what is required in an anticipatory search warrant is a triggering condition that would permit the execution of the warrant on the fair probability that contraband would be discovered if the search were executed no such condition appears to be included here, when the best that is offered for a triggering condition is that Dory has rented a room. The fact that the detective overheard mention of the Golden Starfish through the door is irrelevant to the establishment of probable cause for the warrant, though. 2. The Theories Of Gestalt Psychology Development of Gestalt Psychology Phrases such as seeing the forest from the trees and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts have roots grounded in the same ideals of Gestalt psychology. These phrases best describe the purpose of Gestalt psychology in how they emphasize focusing on the big picture and not just the colors. The Gestalt concept of perception is how the mind understands the world around it by seeing it in whole forms, not simple elements. The human brain and consciousness contains an essence that loses value when broken down into elements of study. Origin of Gestalt Musical notes when observed as whole produce complex and wonderful melodies. The notes alone do not hold the same effect and take away value of the complete melody if only heard as individual tones. When breaking such abilities down into elements, the value of the ability was being lost in the eyes of Gestaltists. With psychology moving towards the molecular approach in studying consciousness and behavior, the Gestaltists used a molar approach. (Hergenhan Henley, 2014). The origin of the word Gestalt comes from Germany. According to Ginger (2007), the real meaning of the word is richer and more complex, and is impossible to translate . • 39. The Recording Of Sound Recorded By Edouard Leon Scott De... Since its infancy during the nineteenth century, the art of sound recording has been profoundly affected in countless ways by inventors, scientists, and sound engineers. From the invention of the phonograph to the computers of today, they have all made contributions to the foundation of sound recording. Going forward, technologists in today s computer age are becoming more and more creative. There has even been proof that some researchers have had a hand in altering the course of history. With that in mind, the following questions need to be addressed: How was the recording of sound discovered? What technologies were implemented to improve the science? How has today s digital age affected sound recording? Was history really altered? Is there any debate? How was the recording of sound discovered? According to history, the first sound was recorded mechanically by Édouard Léon Scott de Martinville (de Martinville) in 1857 on a machine called the phonautograph (and). His device would record sound by using a vibrating membrane that was attached to a pen (stylus) which drew a line in correspondence to sound waves onto a smoked paper roll attached to a rotating drum (and). The sounds were generated by vibrating diaphragm and a series of levers that moved the diaphragm from side to side (and). Even though de Martinville was able to duplicate sound, his machine was not able to play it back right after it was recorded (and). He made his machine this way because his intensions ... • 40. Jane Kenyon Poem Analysis In high school, I remember talking about the meaning of the poem we were reading, which was called Leda and the Swan , and I remember thinking What the hell is this about. Poems usually never make any sense to me, so I have always hated reading them. I never felt that I really understood the actual meaning of the poems. Someone would start saying what they thought about it and I would just think How did you get that from this? The two poems I read were Otherwise , by Jane Kenyon, and Hay for the Horses ,by Gary Snyder. I made sure to read them slowly and more than once to try to really understand what the poem is about. My reaction to the poem Otherwise was different after I read it a couple of times. In the poem, it repeats the line, It might have been otherwise (Kenyon). The first time I read the poem I thought she wanted her life to be different. I felt that she was explaining what she does everyday and that she wanted to change things up, especially in the last line when it says, But one day, I know, it will be otherwise. I started thinking about my life and when I leave to go to Michigan State in the spring that there is going to be change that I can t wait for. I want change in my life, instead of doing the same thing everyday and I felt that was what the poem was about. Then I read it a few more times and the meaning of the poem became much more different. The second and third time I read the poem my reaction was the opposite. I realized she doesn t want her life to change; she is explaining what she does everyday because she wants every day to be like that. It says, I ate cereal, sweet milk, ripe, flawless peach...All morning I did the work that I love. When she describes the peach as flawless and that she loves her work, I saw it was more about her realizing how good her life is and that she doesn t want those days to change. The meaning of the last line that says, But one day, I know, it will be otherwise changed for me and the feel of the poem changed as well. After finding out what the poem really was about, the poem became sad for me instead of a more exciting feeling which I had the first time. It is almost as if she knows something bad is going to happen and that she only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The role of a jury is to determine question of fact. The jury is in a powerful method because ultimately, it determines whether a person is guilty or innocent. In civil cases, the main function of the jury is to find the facts having regard to the evidence, and assess damages. The number of jurors used in a civil trial is less than that used in a criminal trial. The role of the child becomes one of warding off the serious depression that threatens the parents and holding the parent together. Wallerstein calls these children the overburden child . They accounted for 15 percent of the children in her study. Many become angry at being trapped by the parent s demands, at being robbed at their separate identity and denied their childhood. They are saddened, sometimes beyond repair, at seeing so few of their own needs gratified, (p. 41). Judith Wallerstein also found that divorce has long lasting psychological effect on many children, one that in fact, may turn out to be permanent. Children of divorce have vivid memories about their parens separation. The details are etched permanently in their minds, more than any other experiences in their lives. She also identified the sleeper effect as another long term implication of divorce. It is a delayed reaction to an event that happened many years earlier, (p.60). She saw many young women with acute, delayed depression which she defines as the sleeper effect and warns of it s danger. It occurs when many young women are about to make decisions that have long term implications for their lives. • 45. Confidentiality And The Common Law Of Confidentiality In this essay I am going to discuss confidentiality. The common law of confidentiality says that people have a right to expect that information given to a healthcare professional is only used for the reason it was given but also that it will not be disclosed without permission (The nursing times, no date). The important concept is of trust, without which no relationship can develop or be sustained between a patient and a nursing practitioner. Baillie and Black (2015. p27) stated that in practice, confidentiality is a legal obligation derived from statute law and case law and it will also usually be included in the contract of employment as a nurse, with a specific link to disciplinary procedures if breached. Although it is important that a nurse makes sure that the information they share is legitimate, this is not absolute as there are a number of exceptions. The Data Protection Act(1998) states that a nurse must inform the patient of the circumstances under which their information will be shared and that this is necessary in order for the best treatment to be given. According to the NMC(2010), all nurses must respect individual rights to confidentiality and keep information secure and confidential in accordance with the law and relevant ethical and regulatory frameworks, taking account of local protocols. They must also actively share personal data with others when interest of safety and protection override the need for confidentiality. Confidentially covers a large ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Analysis of Shirley Jackson s The Lottery Essays Shirley Jackson s famous short story, The Lottery, was published in 1948 and remains to this day one of the most enduring and affecting American works in the literary canon. The Lottery tells the story of a farming community that holds a ritualistic lottery among its citizens each year. Although the text initially presents audiences with a close knit community participating in a social event together on a special day, the shocking twist at the work s end with the death of the lottery s winner by public stoning has led to its widespread popularity, public outcry and discussion, and continued examination in modern times (Jackson). One potential critical theory that can be applied to Jackson s The Lottery is the reader response ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Louise Rosenblatt notes, there are three key terms associated with reader response theory: the ideal reader, the actual reader, and the implied reader. The ideal reader may be defined as one who is an informed reader ... an audience that the author may have purposefully intended to read the text (Parker 317 318). The actual reader, meanwhile, is little more than the actual audience encountering the text, while the implied reader is based on the notion of implicit assumptions of what audiences know and do not know. For The Lottery, then, it is logical to suppose that Shirley Jackson may have thought an ideal reader as one capable of analyzing works for close reading or deeper subtexts, while an implied reader would be one who is unaware of the plot s surprise ending. Although reader response theory may tend to focus on the reader s interpretation of the text, it does not discount the writer s sense of authorship, the social, historical, or even political context surrounding a given work of literature, or the text itself. In brief, The Lottery tells the story of an annual summer drawing that initially appears innocent to the reader, but becomes more tension filled and ultimately dangerous as the short story continues. By the end of the piece, it is revealed that the lottery is not a fortunate winning at all, but an ancient ritual in which a group of relatively modern townspeople end up stoning the chosen woman (Jackson). The author, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Descriptive Essay On Fitness Chillin with Dillon As I knocked on the heavy, black door to our local fitness center, I stood and waited as a woman put down her dumb bells and made her way over to the door to let me in. The moment I entered the gym I immediately noticed the smell of rubber mats and disinfectant spray. I sat quietly in the single black chair placed by the door, watching a few people silently do their workouts, as I waited for Jess Dillon to be done with her last client of the day so we could talk. Soon, a small, petite woman, who seemed no taller than 5 3 walked out of the back room wearing black workout pants along with a light pink tank top. She had her short, dark hair up in a ponytail and met my gaze with a soft smile. I immediately recognized her as Jess and followed her out of the gym. We walked through a brown door placed on the far west side of the fitness center which led to the lobby area outside of her private lessons studio. It was clean and had a calming aroma. There was a single wooden table with four matching chairs placed around it. Jess sat down very comfortably on the far side of a table, talking with ease from the very beginning.
