Adsorbate
 An adsorbate is any substance that has
undergone adsorption on the surface
Adsorbent
 A material that extracts certain substances
from gases , liquids, or solids by causing
them to adhere to it’s surface without
changing it’s physical properties.

 Activated carbon
 Silica gel
 Activated alumina
 Activated carbon-widely used
 All these are of high cost
Agricultural wastes as
Adsorbents
 Rice husks
 Corncob
 Coir-pith
 Saw dust
 Bagasse pith
 Nut shells- Ground nut shells, Hazle nut shells,
etc…
 Fruit peels-Orange peels, banana peels, etc…
 Leaf powders
 Used tea leaves
 Fruit shells-Tamarind fruit shells
Preperation of adsorbents from
agricultural waste
 There are different methods for
different wastes
 For example, let us take the
preperation of adsorbent by using
ground nut shells and used tea
powder.
Ground nut shell as adsorbent
 Preperation-Ground nut shells-
Collected-Washed with distilled water-
boiled at 100 degree centigrade-30
mins-dried at 80 degree centigrade-48
hrs-grounded-passed through 25
mesh size sieve.
 Spent tea waste-collected-washed
with distilled water-3-4 times boiled at
100 degree centigrade-30 mins-dried
at 80 degree centigrade-48 hrs-
passed through 25 mesh size sieve
Ground nut shells Used tea powder
Procedure
 Take 100 ml sample in 250 ml conical
flask-adsorbent added-shaking the
sample for 100 mins-color removal
efficiency calculated-using colorimeter.
 It is found that ground nut shell is
effective in removal of Methylene blue.
Conclusion
 Although the removal efficiency is less
compared to activated carbon,
agricultural waste is of low cost and is
eco-friendly.

Textile industry waste water purification using agricultural waste

  • 3. Introduction Textile industry waste water contains  BOD and COD value  Suspended solids  Toxic compounds and  The color that is perceived by human eyes at very low concentration
  • 4. Need for textile industry waste water purification  Dyes- decreases the sunlight entering the water bodies  TSS- cause for producing of pathogens  Toxic compounds- Harmful to human health  These lead to harmful effects both on aquatic and human life
  • 5. Purification process  Coagulation  Ultra-filtration  Adsorption  Photo-oxidation  Ion exchange method  Among them adsorption is the best method
  • 7. Adsorbate  An adsorbate is any substance that has undergone adsorption on the surface
  • 8. Adsorbent  A material that extracts certain substances from gases , liquids, or solids by causing them to adhere to it’s surface without changing it’s physical properties.
  • 9. Adsorbents  Activated carbon  Silica gel  Activated alumina  Activated carbon-widely used  All these are of high cost
  • 10. Agricultural wastes as Adsorbents  Rice husks  Corncob  Coir-pith  Saw dust  Bagasse pith  Nut shells- Ground nut shells, Hazle nut shells, etc…  Fruit peels-Orange peels, banana peels, etc…  Leaf powders  Used tea leaves  Fruit shells-Tamarind fruit shells
  • 11. Preperation of adsorbents from agricultural waste  There are different methods for different wastes  For example, let us take the preperation of adsorbent by using ground nut shells and used tea powder.
  • 12. Ground nut shell as adsorbent  Preperation-Ground nut shells- Collected-Washed with distilled water- boiled at 100 degree centigrade-30 mins-dried at 80 degree centigrade-48 hrs-grounded-passed through 25 mesh size sieve.  Spent tea waste-collected-washed with distilled water-3-4 times boiled at 100 degree centigrade-30 mins-dried at 80 degree centigrade-48 hrs- passed through 25 mesh size sieve
  • 13. Ground nut shells Used tea powder
  • 14. Procedure  Take 100 ml sample in 250 ml conical flask-adsorbent added-shaking the sample for 100 mins-color removal efficiency calculated-using colorimeter.  It is found that ground nut shell is effective in removal of Methylene blue.
  • 15. Conclusion  Although the removal efficiency is less compared to activated carbon, agricultural waste is of low cost and is eco-friendly.
