What is a self-
driving car?
• A self-driving car
(sometimes called an
autonomous car or
driverless car) is a vehicle
that uses a combination of
sensors, cameras, radar
and artificial
intelligence (AI) to travel
between destinations
without a human operator.
Technologies
• Self-driving vehicles employ
a wide range of technologies
like radar, cameras,
ultrasound, and radio
antennas to navigate safely
on our roads. Possible
implementations of the
technology include personal
self-driving vehicles,
shared robotaxis, connected
vehicle platoons and long-
distance trucking. Several
projects to develop a fully
self-driving commercial car
are in various stages of
development.
Sensors
• Below is an overview of the
various sensors required for
autonomous driving. The most
important vehicle sensors for
perceiving the environment
are cameras, radar, ultrasonic, and
LiDAR sensors. With the exception
of cameras, they are all based on
the time-of-flight principle
