Temper tantrums are common in children ages 1 to 3 and involve angry outbursts of screaming, crying, kicking or breath holding. To prevent tantrums, parents should make sure children get enough sleep, know their limits in public, and give small choices like what shoes to wear. During tantrums, parents should stay calm and not reward the behavior, but can acknowledge good behavior later. After, parents should comfort the child but not give in to demands, and use it as a teaching moment.

2. What is a temper
tantrum?
A temper tantrum is an
episode of anger resulting in
one or more of the following:
 Kicking
 Screaming
 Whining
 Crying
 Breath holding
Temper tantrums are more
common in children ages 1
to 3 years old.
*Rewards do not have to be materialistic.
What to do during a
temper tantrum
Remember to try and stay
calm when your child starts
acting up because this is a
normal part of the child’s
development.
Don’t give in or reward the
tantrum, but reward* good
behavior.
 Ex: If they normally
have a tantrum at a
specific place, but you
go there and they
behave themselves let
them know that they
have done good.
When to call the
doctor
You should call the doctor if
you have any questions on
how to handle more
destructive behavior or hard
time resisting giving into the
child’s demands.
What to do after the
temper tantrum
Hug them and let them know
that they are loved.
Don’t give in to what they
wanted even after they have
calmed down because it will
lead them to believe that
temper tantrums will work.
Use the temper tantrum to
talk about what happened
and how to avoid having
another in the future.
