2. WORDS TO STUDY
Girth Measurements- taken horizontally
and most of them go around the entire
circumference of the body
Length Measurements- taken vertically
and their primary purpose is to measure
the distance between reference points
of the body
3. Rules in Taking Body Measurements
1. Use a tape measure that does not stretch.
2. Make sure your client wears well-fitted undergarments
and outer garments.
3. Tie a string around the natural waistline of the client.
4. Ask the client to stand in a relaxed, upright position.
5. Take girth measurements, then vertical measurements.
6. Insert two fingers in the tape measure in taking
circumferential measurements.
7. Be sure to keep the tape measure parallel to the floor.
8. Pull the tape snug, but not too tight.
9. Record accurately all measurements on a chart.
4. Sample Individual Measurement Chart

5. Procedure in Taking Body Measurements
There are several parts of the body to be measured.
These measurements are grouped as follows:
Horizontal measurements
Circumferential measurements
Vertical measurements
6. Shoulder –
Measurement is
taken from the
tip of the left
shoulder to the
tip of the right
shoulder,
arching slightly
to cover the
cervical
prominence of
Horizontal Measurements - are taken from
the left of the body to the right
7. Bust Point
Width/ Apex
Distance –
Measurement is taken
across from the tip of
the left bust point to
the tip of the right bust
Horizontal Measurements
8. Bust –
Measurement is
taken around the
bust with the tape
measure running
on the same level
in front, at the
back and on the
sides.
Circumferential Measurements – are taken
around the body
9. Waist –
Measurement
is taken
around the
smallest part
of the torso
Circumferential Measurements
10. First Hip –
Measurement
is taken around
the hip level
where the
stomach is
fullest.
Circumferential Measurements
11. Second
Hip –
Measurement is
taken around
the hip level
where the
buttocks are
fullest.
Circumferential Measurements
14. Figure
Back –
Measurement is
taken from the
center of the
back shoulder
over the blade
down to the
Vertical Measurements – are taken from the
top of the body figure to its base.
20. Measurements should be accurate
and exact, not tight or loose.
Accurate body measurements help
produce correct patterns and well-
fitted garments.
Time in constructing a garment is
saved if body measurements are taken
