1. Lesson 4 in Dressmaking:
Perform Mensuration and
Calculation
2. Taking correct and accurate
body measurements is essential
in garment making because it
leads to well-fitted garments.
There are several ways of taking
the body measurements
efficiently.
4. A. Horizontal
measurement. Locate
all the parts of the
body that can be
measured horizontally.
Prepare a tape
measure, measuring
chart, and a pencil or
pen.
5. 1. Shoulder to neck-
This is taken from
the center of the
neck up to the
shoulder point where
the arms begin to
fall.
11. 7. Hips- Measure around
the fullest part of the
hips and 20 cm, below
the waistline. knees
should be together while
the measurement is
being taken.
27. 5. Hip or seat- It
is taken from the
fullest part of the
buttocks with two
fingers inserted
under the tape
measure.
28. English and Metric Systems of
Measurement
Simple computation is an easy
mathematical application used to
determine the accurate measurements of
body parts, length and width of
materials, and the estimated cost
needed to sew an apparel.
29. The important device in taking
the body measurements is the
tape measure. There are two
systems used in taking body
measurement: English and
Metric system.
30. The unit measurement used in
English system is inches while in
Metric system, it is centimeters.
Most dressmakers prefer to use
centimeters because the
measurements are more accurate.
31. The metric measurement
system is used in measuring the
length and width of fabrics
needed to sew an apparel.
Here are some computations of
inches to centimeters.
32. 1/4 inch = 0.635 centimeters
1/2 inch = 1.27 centimeters
3/4 inch = 1.905 centimeters
1 inch =2.54 centimeters
Thus: 3 inches x 2.54 cm. = 7.62
centimeters
