Swayam is an online learning platform launched by the Indian government to achieve the goals of access, equity and quality in education, providing online courses from school to postgraduate level through nine national coordinators; it offers courses in various formats including video lectures, readings, tests and discussion forums; students can obtain credits for courses and certificates by registering for and passing proctored final exams.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. The courses hosted on SWAYAM

3. • BACKGROUND :-
• SWAYAM provide one integrated platform and a portal for online courses, using information and communication technology,
covering learners from Schooling,
• class 9 to 12
• Under Graduates
• Post Graduates
• in all subjects.
• At present more than 2,000 MOOCs are hosted on SWAYAM, prepared by specially chosen faculty and teachers, across
the Country.
• The courses are interactive and are available free of cost, to the learners.
• Meanwhile, UGC and AICTE have issued ‘Credit Framework for online learning courses through SWAYAM, Regulation
2016’ (http://www.ugc.ac.in/pdfnews/0272836_moocs.pdf); allowing upto 20% Online courses taken through SWAYAM, to
be counted for credit.
• Grades earned by successful students studying in conventional Institutes shall be transferred to the academic record of
such Student
4. • In order to ensure that best quality content is produced and delivered, nine National
Coordinators have been appointed. They are:-
• AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) for self-paced and international courses.
• NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) for Engineering.
• UGC (University Grants Commission) for non technical post-graduation education.
• CEC (Consortium for Educational Communication) for under-graduate education.
• NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) for school education.
• NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) for school education.
• IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) for out-of-school students.
• IIMB (Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore) for management studies.
• NITTTR (National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research) for Teacher Training
programme.
5. • Courses delivered through SWAYAM are available free of cost to the learners, however learners wanting a
SWAYAM certificate should register for the final proctored exams that come at a fee and attend in-person at
designated centers on specified dates.
• Eligibility for the certificate will be announced on the course page and learners will get certificates only if this
criteria is matched. Universities/colleges approving credit transfer for these courses can use the
marks/certificate obtained in these courses for the same.

6. • Credit Transfer:-
• UGC has already issued the UGC (Credit Framework for online learning courses through
SWAYAM) Regulation 2016 advising the Universities to identify courses where credits can be
transferred on to the academic record of the students for courses done on SWAYAM.
• AICTE has also put out gazette notification in 2016 and subsequently for adoption of these
courses for credit transfer.
• You can indicate your grievances related to Credit Transfer at your parent university by submitting
them in this form.
• The current SWAYAM platform is developed by Ministry of Education and NPTEL, IIT Madras with
the help of Google Inc. and Persistent Systems Ltd.
8. NATIONAL COORDINATORS
Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), New Delhi.
The Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC) is one of the Inter University Centres
set up by the University Grants Commission of India.
Established in 1991, addresses the needs of higher education through powerful media like
Television along with the appropriate use of emerging Information Communication
Technology (ICT).
Today, CEC’s 21 Media Centers are working towards achieving this goal. In view of the
potential of CEC, MHRD, New Delhi designated CEC as National Coordinator for
Undergraduate MOOCs and 11 SWAYAM Prabha DTH Channels.
CEC has one of the largest repositories of digital educational content in the country.
Today, CEC’s repository includes more than 40,000 video programs, 24,000 e-content
modules and as a National Coordinator CEC has developed around 322 Undergraduate
MOOCs covering Arts, Literature, Language, Social Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences
and Management and Professional courses.
9. • AICTE (All India council for Technical education)
• AICTE has been appointed 9th National MOOCs Coordinator (NC)
vide MHRD vide letter No.8-26/2014-TEL, dated 02.08.2017 for all
courses that do not fall in the purview of any of the existing NCs
including foreign university courses.
• Terms and Reference (TOR) for appointment of AICTE as NC are
governed by MHRD’s Order No.8-26/2014-TEL, dated 9th March,
2016.
• AICTE has been appointed National Coordinator for NRCs also
identified by MHRD under PMMMNMTT for preparation of Annual
Refresher Programme in Teaching for faculty of the
Engineering/University/ Institutions for MOOCs Development under
SWAYAM.

10. • Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
• The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), established by an Act of Parliament
in 1985, has continuously striven to build an inclusive knowledge society through inclusive
education.
• It has tried to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) by offering high-quality teaching
through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.
• The University began by offering two academic programmes in 1987, i.e., Diploma in
Management and Diploma in Distance Education, with strength of 4,528 students.
• Today, it serves the educational aspirations of over 3 million students in India and other
countries through 21 Schools of Studies and a network of 67 regional centers, around
2,667 learner support centers and 29 overseas partner institutions.
• The University offers about 228 certificate, diploma, degree and doctoral programmes,

11. • IIM Bangalore
• The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) is one of the leading management education institutes
in Asia.
• Under the IIM Act of 2017, IIMB is an Institute of National Importance.
• Towards this end, the institute offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).
• IIMB is the first management school in India to offer MOOCs on the edX.
• IIMB is also the coordinating institute for management education for SWAYAM, Government of India’s online
education platform.
The Quality Council of India (QCI) will be the supporting partner for IIMB Swayam courses.
• QCI is an autonomous body set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India jointly
with the Indian Industry represented by the three premier industry associations i.e. Associated Chambers of
Commerce and Industry of India, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Federation of Indian Chambers
of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), to establish and operate national accreditation structure and promote
quality through National Quality Campaign.
In addition to IIMBx team from IIM Bangalore, QCI will also provide learner support to IIMB Swayam courses
and help in dissemination of learner information from time to time.

12. • National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
• The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is an autonomous
organization set up in 1961 by the Government of India to assist and advise the Central and State
Governments on policies and programs for qualitative improvement in school education.
• The major objectives of NCERT and its constituent units are to undertake, promote and coordinate
research in areas related to school education; prepare and publish model textbooks,
supplementary material, newsletters, journals and develops educational kits, multimedia, digital
materials, etc.
• organize pre-service and in-service training of teachers; develop and disseminate innovative
educational techniques and practices; collaborate and network with state educational departments,
universities, NGOs and other educational institutions; act as a clearinghouse for ideas and

• In addition to research, development, training, extension, publication and dissemination activities,
NCERT is an implementation agency for bilateral cultural exchange programs with other countries
in the field of school education.
• The NCERT also interacts and works in collaboration with the international organizations, visiting
foreign delegations and offers various training facilities to educational personnel from developing
countries.
13. • National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)
• The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an autonomous Institution under MHRD
established in 1989.
• NIOS offers Secondary (10th), Sr. Secondary (12th) and Vocational courses through open
and distance learning(ODL) mode.
• It also offers Open Basic Education and Elementary Teacher Education Programme.
• NIOS operates through a network of five Departments, 22 Regional Centers and more than
6500 and Accredited Institutions in India and abroad.
• It has a current cumulative enrolment of about 2.82 million learners during the last five years
with an annual enrolment of about 550 thousand learners which makes it the largest open
schooling system in the world.
• The openness and flexibility in education is key to educational programs of NIOS.
• There is no upper age for admission in NIOS. Freedom of choice of subjects, self-learning
study materials, transfer of credits and flexible examination system with ICT based On-
Demand Examination (ODES) System are some of the learner-centric facilities being
provided by NIOS. NIOS offers 42 Courses on SWAYAM Platform.
• NIOS successfully completed the training of more than 13 lakhs untrained in-service
elementary teachers using SWAYAM platform.
14. • National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research
• The National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) Chennai
was established as an autonomous Institute by the Ministry of Human Resource
Development, Government of India in the year 1964 to improve the quality of Engineering
Education system in India and in the Southern Region in particular.
• Within this mandate, the institute takes initiatives to offer need-based Human Resource
Development programs through appropriate modes and develop curricula and
instructional resources to meet their clientele requirements.
• It also fosters research in the interdisciplinary area of Engineering Education and offers
consultancy and extension services for the total development of technical institutions
(Engineering and Polytechnic Colleges), Industry, Service sector and the Community at
large.
• NITTTR Chennai also serves as one of the National Coordinator for SWAYAM for the
teacher training program, along with the other NITTTRs (Bhopal, Chandigarh and Kolkata)
we are offering courses in the area of technical teacher training.
15. • University Grants Commission.
• The UGC, was established in 1956 as a statutory body of the Government of
India through an Act of Parliament for the coordination, determination and
maintenance of standards of university education in India.
• In order to ensure effective region-wise coverage throughout the country, the
UGC has decentralized its operations by setting up six regional centers at

• The head office of the UGC is located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg in New

19. What is the pass mark for SWAYAM exam?
40%
Passing Marks: You will be Eligible for Certificate Only if you score minimum 40% Weekly Assessment and
min 40% in Final Exam. If you score less than 40% in either weekly assessments (avg) or in final exam, you will
