Survey Answers Analysis
What visuals do you prefer in a music
video?
This question tells that more than half of my
target audience believe that a music video
should be a mix between narrative and live
band performance. This is helpful for me
when creating my music video as many indie
music videos follow the same convention that
there should be a narrative to the video but
also that it should feature a live band
performance. This shows that my audience
are wanting me to follow the conventions of
most indie music videos as they are indie
rock fans. The total number of people who
want me to do this is 71% which shows not
everyone prefers this and some would rather
the video was either just narrative or live
band performance. However I will follow
what the majority say when I make my music
video.
How old are you?
Over 90% of my audience say that they
are aged between 17-19. This means
that I need to aim my music video at
those who are in their late teens. The
entire age range is only from 17-22 and
this is what most people would associate
with indie music. This is because most
people who listen to indie rock are
within this age range as the lyrics in the
songs are easily relatable to that age
group. Therefore when I make my music
video I will aim the visuals to this age
group as the lyrics of my chosen song
‘Arabella’ are about relationships. This
is an area that this age group can relate
to.
What gender are you?
My audience is pretty much a 50/50 split
between boy and girl. This shows that
despite indie rock conventions suggesting the
music is more aimed at males, my video
should be gender neutral as my audience is
both male and female. However this will be
easy because my song is about a relationship
and therefore I can relate a relationship to
both a male and female meaning that my
video will be gender neutral. Overall this
answer is helpful as it helps me identify what
the genre of my audience will be so I can
work the visuals around this.
What locations do you associate with
indie music videos?
I used the question so I could identify
where I would film most parts of my
music video. This will help me as choosing
the right location is key in an indie music
video as the location often links in with
the narrative. The survey indicates to me
that 50% of the people think it should be
a big city location, a common theme of
the indie rock music genre. However 28%
believe it should be shot in the
countryside. Therefore when filming my
music video I will change between
different locations in order to include the
demands of my audience who filled in the
survey.
What do you expect most in an indie
rock music video?
This question is similar to the first one.
Many of my audience believe an indie
music video should contain live
performance (35%) and another believe
it should contain narrative (35%). This
once again shows how key those two
conventions will be when I make my
music video. However 23% of my
audience believe a dark colour scheme
is what you should expect most in an
indie rock music video therefore I will
also incorporate this in my video. The
original ‘Arabella’ video has all shots
edited in to a black and white colour
scheme and therefore also follows this
convention.

However this will be easy because my song is about a relationship and therefore I can relate a relationship to both a male and female meaning that my video will be gender neutral. Overall this answer is helpful as it helps me identify what the genre of my audience will be so I can work the visuals around this.
  • 5. What locations do you associate with indie music videos? I used the question so I could identify where I would film most parts of my music video. This will help me as choosing the right location is key in an indie music video as the location often links in with the narrative. The survey indicates to me that 50% of the people think it should be a big city location, a common theme of the indie rock music genre. However 28% believe it should be shot in the countryside. Therefore when filming my music video I will change between different locations in order to include the demands of my audience who filled in the survey.
  • 6. What do you expect most in an indie rock music video? This question is similar to the first one. Many of my audience believe an indie music video should contain live performance (35%) and another believe it should contain narrative (35%). This once again shows how key those two conventions will be when I make my music video. However 23% of my audience believe a dark colour scheme is what you should expect most in an indie rock music video therefore I will also incorporate this in my video. The original ‘Arabella’ video has all shots edited in to a black and white colour scheme and therefore also follows this convention.
