The document summarizes audience research conducted for a music video. It found that the audience was primarily ages 17-20, enjoyed music videos in general, and preferred a narrative-focused video over a performance. The research also indicated that including staged violence and some intertextual references would be acceptable, but intertextuality should not be a major focus. Overall, the research provided useful guidance on priorities and comfort in producing a video that presents the artist's intended narrative.
2. Gender
• I didn’t ask about what gender the audience member was
because to me personally I do not make my music videos
gender biased. I don’t see the point of making the video
appealing to a certain gender as it limits the possibilities
off what I will be able to present to the viewer of the music
video. Overall I feel that being unbiased towards gender
in video production can create a more fulfilling and artistic
video.
3. Ages
• All of the people who responded to the questionnaire were between
the ages of 17 to 20. This may compromise the validity of my results
as I am only getting the opinions of one age group overall. However
the artist for my music is marketed mostly towards young adults so
this audience research may actually be beneficial for me in the long
term.
• I may try to conduct further research into different age groups to see if
they can help improve my understanding of what audiences want
from my video.
How old are you?
<13 0 0%
13-16 0 0%
17-20 8 100%
21+ 0 0%
4. Responses to music videos
• The majority of individuals who have answered my survey
enjoyed music videos in general. This is a helpful
response for me as I will not have to worry about trying to
make a music video that will try and ‘convert’ people to
liking music videos. I did have one response that said that
they were unsure on whether they enjoyed music videos. I
will take this into account as it may be that they will only
enjoy certain music.
Yes 7 88%
No 0 0%
Unsure 1 13%
5. Narrative
• For my audience research I decided to see how
audiences would react to a more mature narrative in a
mainstream song, what heir reaction would be to a heavily
narrative based music video. I wanted to see if it would be
a good idea going for a high risk strategy of only focusing
on narrative on typically iconographic genre which is the
alternative genre.
6. Narrative
• I also asked in my audience research would prefer to see
a narrative piece in a music video production or a
performance piece. The overwhelming response was to
have a narrative focused music video instead of having a
performance piece. I think I will try and merge the two
together as planned but the narrative will be prioritized as
the key feature of the video. This due to some people
being indifferent on how the music video is shot.
Narrative piece 5 63%
Performance piece 0 0%
indifferent 3 38%
7. Narrative
• The overwhelming response regarding the use of violence
within the video has been received well, I feel that it would
be safe to include staged violence within my production
although I am aware of the risks involved. I may decide
eventually to have the violence occur of camera to make it
easier to show to the audience.
8. Intertextuality
• I was concerned that on the fact whether it would be
worth adding in some references to other pieces of media.
The overall response indicated that it should not be a
major concern for me as people are divided on the matter.
This information tells me that while I should consider
intertextuality, it should not be a priority for the music
video.
9. Conclusion
• This audience research was incredibly helpful into
knowing what will and will not be a priority within the
music video. It was important for me to do this as it makes
me feel more comfortable with producing what I want to
do for my music video as well as being confident on how
to present it to an audience. This audience research will
be reflected in the final product.
