Local attitudes and perceptions are important concepts toward wildlife conservation. The success of chimpanzee conservation relies on the perceptions and the willingness of the local population to contribute towards its conservation. This study evaluates the knowledge, attitude and perception of local communities towards chimpanzee conservation in the Tofala Hill Wildlife Sanctuary (THWS) in the Southwest Region of Cameroon. Structured questions based on a questionnaire (open and close ended questions), Focus group discussion and Participatory rapid Appraisal tools and techniques were used to collect information from 300 participants within the participatory age group of 20years and above from six out of 14 villages (Nkong, Bangang, Besali, Bechati, Folepi and Fossimundi) around the THWS. Fifty individuals were sampled from each village and a maximum of 2 individuals (the head of household and one other active participant) participated from each household. Collected data were stored in Microsoft excel spreadsheets 2007 after importation into XLSTAT 2007. 8. 4 statistic software for the different statistical tests. Chi-square test and Spearman correlation were conducted at 0.05 level of significance. The knowledge of interviewees on chimpanzee presence was supported by 90.33% of participants. Local knowledge on the population status of chimpanzee shows that 61% affirmed that their population is reducing primarily due to hunting and habitat loss of poor agriculture. According to 67% of interviewees, benefiting from wildlife through tourism, seed dispersion, bush meat and medicine influenced local attitudes and perception toward chimpanzee conservation while their destructive habits through crop riding, inadequate farmland for agriculture and high income derived from the sales of chimpanzee makes 33% of the local population to change their attitude and perception toward chimpanzee conservation. People with no formal education (62.96%) did not found chimpanzee conservation important whereas more educated people (76.76%) found chimpanzee conservation a priority. Most respondents (57.04%) said the idea of chimpanzee conservation was not supported due to high income (15,500FCFA) generated from the sales of chimpanzee. Increasing public awareness of the benefits and values of chimpanzee conservation through media (radios, televisions and smart phones), handbills, bill boards, seminars and symposiums, and films could help mitigate the poor attitudes of the local population towards chimpanzee conservation. Instigating outreach programs to communities living in close proximity to chimpanzee and other wildlife species is often high on the agenda of conservation NGOs with the assumption that long-term change can best be achieved through accelerating change in societal attitudes towards wildlife.

Wildlife conservation compatible with local forest uses on Seram Island, east...CIFOR-ICRAF
The term ‘secondary forests’ brings to mind logged, disturbed, slash-and-burn fallow forests and industrial plantations. But there are many secondary forests formed and maintained through arboriculture that are ‘invisible’ for outsiders because they tolerate other species (non-crops and wild animals) and are dispersed in the forest area with no clear boundaries. This presentation, given at the 8th IALE World Congress in Beijing, China on 18-23 August 2011, summarises a study that attempts to clarify how these human-modified forests are created and maintained, and what roles and meanings such forests have for local livelihoods and for biodiversity. Results revealed that indigenous arboriculture does encourage mildly interdependent relationships between wildlife and human livelihoods, typified by the case of the protected Mollucan cockatoo. Further study is needed to evaluate the value of arboriculture for effective national park management and biodiversity conservation compatible with local forest uses.
Strategies adopted to mitigate Human–Elephant Conflict (HEC) in and around Ke...KVASU
Elephants are among the flagship species of conservation. They live in a variety of habitats and landscapes. Apart from that, elephants were also kept in captivity. Only about 20 per cent of the elephant’s range lies in national parks and sanctuaries. With forests thinning out, the rest 80 per cent of the elephants in most parts of the country have dispersed into areas with high density of human population. HEC forms a grave threat for both sides i.e. animals as well as humans. Reports pointed out that around 300 people were killed annually in India due to human elephant conflicts. The common causes for this includes crop raiding which was the result of habitat loss and forest fragmentation due to human intrusion. It was reported that around 40-50 elephants were killed during crop raiding in India. Another contributor to it is lethal retaliation against elephants. It was reported that more than 60 elephants were found dead in retaliation incidents in North East India and Sumatra in 2001, which was poisoned by the plantation workers. The conflict intensifies when people try to chase away the animals with searchlights, crackers or guns, making the pachyderms even more aggressive.

Security of tenure in Indonesia is constrained by the dual nature of land administration. Land designated as forest is controlled by the Ministry of Forestry, which does not recognize the customary rights of communities. We will analyze local perceptions of tenure where customary and state authorities interface and where varying but increasing levels of development interventions exert considerable pressures on forests and people.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. Case 1 Supernatural enforcement
mechanism:
One day, in 1986, A. Li. and his brother in law Z. A. Enforcement mechanism
went hunting together to Akalautotu, a forest where people believe
collectively owned by the sub-clan that Z. A. supernatural agencies
belonged to. After that, they entered Aimoto, monitor human conducts and

Case 2
One day in 2006, D. A. set sohe in a forest named
Pahitasia Tuetue after lifting the ban of seli kaitahu on
the forest. They closed the forest for about 5 years by
imposing seli kaitahu. While setting sohe, D. A. found
many new totoi (incisions made in a trunk of a tree
used as steps to climb the tree) in several trees with a
tree hollow used by the cuscus as a shelter. This
indicated that there was someone who conducted
spear hunting, thus violating seli kaitahu.
Half a year before lifting the ban of seli kaitahu, a male
villager had engaged in hunting in a forest adjoining
the Pahitasia tuetue. D. A. assumed that the man
hunted forest game animals in the Pahitasia tuetue.

D. A. did not report the infringement to latu nusa, the head of the adat law
organization, responsible for the resolution of adat law infringement, because
no one can identify the poacher and if we try to find out the infringer,
relationships among villagers will worsen. D. A. said “even though we don‘t
know when it will happen, the time (when supernatural agencies bring about
the infringer a misfortune) will surely come, so we should only wait for it” .
About 6 months later, the wife of that man had extremely hard labor when
she gave birth to a baby. D. A. thought of it as a sanction imposed by
mutuaila, awa, and sira tana.

Case 3
Sewatinueni and Ahahae (forests collectively owned by a clan that Y. A.
belong to)had been used and managed by Y. A. He has recognized
that someone is engaging in trapping/hunting in these forests for
several years. Therefore, Y. A. imposed a sasi greja on these forests in
October 2005. It was the first sasi gereja against forest use in Amani
oho.
The imposition of sasi greja was not because Y. A. no longer believed
in the effectiveness of seli kaitahu. According to his explanations
mutuaila and natural spirits sometimes inflict akeake (punishment) on
the offender long after seli kaitahu is broken, whereas, in sasi greja,
the Christian God punishes the sasi breaker shortly after the
infringement. Y. A. imposed sasi greja on these forests in order to
have the poachers meet with some punishment as soon as possible.

In December 2006, a half year after placing the sasi greja, Y. A. requested
opening the sasi in both forests to the village church council. After the
announcement of the removal of the sasi in the Sunday service, his son-in-
law went trapping in the forest and found several new totoi (incisions made
by machete in a tree trunk to climb the tree). This indicated that someone
had conducted spear hunting for cuscus, thus violating the sasi greja.
Y. A. suspected X, who was known as the master of tree climbing, of
poaching in the forests, since many totoi had been made in huge trees, which
ordinary people hesitated to climb. In addition, X had caught many cuscuses
and had sold them in the village.
X had also suffered from terrible malaria and hovered closely between life
and death in October 2006. The misfortunes of X were interpreted as
punishments inflicted by the Christian God as the consequence of his
violation of the sasi gereja

villagers that may arise from the enforcement process,
since people do not directly accuse or punish the violator
Such characteristics of the IRM appear to be quite
suitable for the socio-cultural context
27. Discussion: suitability of IRM to the local
socio-cultural context (3/3)
As illustrated in case 3, instead of exerting himself to form a
more “rational” management system against the repeated
violation of seli kaitahu, Y.A did try to reinstate the order of
forest use by applying a new system based on SEM supported
by the people’s belief in the Christian God
This case implies the local people’s tendency to establish and
maintain order in forest use depending on the forces of
supernatural agencies (?)
As long as the forest tenure is secured and the cultural
homogeneity does not degrade, they may continue their efforts
in forming and maintaining the well-structured forest use in
their close relationships with supernatural agencies (?)
28. Concluding Remarks
The local people’s belief in supernatural agencies has had a
significant influence in the arena where the norms to
control forest use have worked.
The IRM, not having people involved directly in
enforcement has the aspect of being suitable to the local
socio-cultural context where people have a strong
disposition to avoid social discord
Further research is still needed, particularly in examining
the effectiveness of IRM based on local people's views of
the supernatural world, taking cultural resilience into
consideration
