Backlick Run Gravity Sewer Abandonment Project

Description:
The Backlick Run Gravity Sewer is a 4,000 linear foot (LF) section of gravity sewer taken out of service in 1998. The
pipe had deteriorated and was prone to collapse. This project involved the in-place abandonment of roughly 3,000-
LF of 24-inch gravity sewer running parallel to Norfolk Southern Corporation’s railroad tracks. Approximately 1,000
LF of above ground sewer and manholes were also removed within the same area. Access to the project area was
through commercial properties and property owned by the Fairfax County Park Authority. This project was
substantially complete on June 10, 2020.
Project Overview:
• Pre-cleaning of gravity sewer pipe and construction of bulkheads
• Filled approximately 3,000 LF gravity sewer with cellular concrete (flowable fill)
• Removed approximately 1,000 linear feet of above ground gravity sewer and manholes
• Removed the tops (2 feet below grade) or removed entirely, 14 manholes
• Restored the area and performed site improvements
