The house of the Scorpion was a intriguing book, but had a very sluggish beginning so it was
hard to read. It s mainly about a drug lord that owns the land of opium that is placed in the
United states. To me there were a lot of slow parts and it felt like there were almost two parts of the
book. Most of the slow parts were in the first part of the bookwhen Matt was gradually figuring out
everything and I just thought they didn t have to stretch it out so much. One half of the book is
about Matt and what happens when he lives in the land of Opium. It goes on about how he got
there and how he was treated and who were his friends and enemies. Additionally when he is
there he learns about El Patron and his true intentions. Then the other half of the book is about
Matt in Aztlan, which is like where Mexico is, and who he finds and what happens to him over
there. The one thing I did like in this book was the characters and how different they were, Celia
was Matt s care taker and the author gave her the homey feeling which was portrayed very well.
The other character I really liked was Tam Lin, to me he became very well developed over time.
There is many other characters though like Maria and Steven and Tom who all live in Opium. But

In the slam poem Exes Jessica Romoff and Mila Cuda speak to an issue inherent in many
relationships: how can a committed devotion to love provoke such an enslaving and abusive
relationship? Romoff and Cuda use extended metaphors, juxtaposition, and appealing to extremes
to evoke an apprehensive atmosphere that shifts to an accusatory tone. At the beginning, the
speakers use dialogue to create this apprehensive tone with the pleading conversation between
the girl and her boyfriend. The speaker uses the line, IF YOU BREAK UP WITH ME I LL KILL
MYSELF to exemplify how the boyfriend is appealing to the extremes. He uses the claim that he
does not want his girlfriend to breakup with him, and creates a threat, which forces the girl to stay in

Humphrey Jennings s and Stewart McAllister s Listen to Britain is a short British propaganda
documentary. Within the twenty minute film, it presented characteristics that fit the expository,
observational, and poetic style of documentary. At the beginning of the film, there is a narrator that
directly addresses the audience. This forward narration is one of the key characteristics of an
expository documentary. Narration appears again later in the filmin the form of a montage of radio
news clips. The documentary is also an observational one as in most scenes the camera served as
a fly on the wall that allowed the audience to feel as if they were physically in the scenes. At the

The documentary is both observational and reflexive. Most of the time during the film, the
audience feels as if they are part of the action. During the concerts, they see the band from
multiple angles including being on the stage with them as well as being in the audience.
However, during the performance of Satisfaction the drummer, Charlie Watts, looks directly into
the camera for an extended period of time which is startling to the audience. The film is reflexive
as the audience is aware of the filmmaking process. The film cuts between actual documentary
clips and the band watching the clips that the audience just viewed. At one point when watching
the footage of a man with a gun and a Hells Angel with a knife, Mick Jagger asks, Can you roll
back, David? He is talking directly to one of the directors, David Maysles. The audience is also
able to see camera men in the audience and on stage with large cameras that stand out, making
them aware that footage is being filmed for the
