SEXUALLY TRAMSITTED
         DISEASES

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (std’s) are caused by
sexually transmitted infections (sti’s)

They are passed from one person to another during
sexual or intimate contact

More than half of all people will get an STI
SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED
      INFECTIONS

May or may not cause symptoms. An infection is
called a disease only when it is causing symptoms

People commonly refer to STD’s even if no symptoms
are present
SOME FACTS

STI’s can be spread to others, even though no
symptoms are present

Some STI’s can spread into the womb (uterus) and
fallopian tubes to cause pelvic inflammatory disease,
which inturn can cause infertility

When diagnosed and treated early, many STI’s can be
treated effectively, and some can even be cured.
CHLAMYDIA
Common STI

Often has no symptoms

Easily treated

Easily spread with or without symptoms

Condoms offer good protection

CHLAMYDIA

How is it spread?

Chlamydia is spread by vaginal and anal intercourse.
Rarely, it is spread during oral sex or by touching
your eye with your hand. It can also spread from a
woman to her fetus during birth. Chlamydia is not
passed through casual contact.
GENITAL WARTS

Spread easily by skin to skin contact

Treatment available for genital warts symptoms

GENITAL WARTS

How is it spread?

Genital warts are spread by skin-to-skin contact —
usually during vaginal, anal, or oral sex play. There is a
chance genital warts can be spread even when no
warts are visible.
HEPATITIS B

Often has no symptoms

No cure, but the infection goes away on it’s own

Easily spread with or without symptoms

Condoms offer good protection

stds-hiv-safer-sex/hepatitis-b-4270.htm
HEPATITIS B
How is it spread?

having sexual intercourse without a latex or female
condom

having unprotected oral sex

sharing needles and other "works" to inject drugs

sharing personal hygiene utensils such as
toothbrushes and razors

accidental pricks with contaminated needles in the
course of health care

Easily spread with or without symptoms

Treatment available for herpes symptoms

stds-hiv-safer-sex/herpes-4271.htm
HERPES

How is it spread?

Herpes is spread by touching, kissing, and sexual
contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can be
passed from one partner to another and from one
part of the body to another. Brief skin-to-skin contact
is all that's needed to pass the virus. Because herpes
may have no symptoms for years, sometimes it is very
difficult to know who passed it to whom.
HIV / AIDS

HIV is the STI that causes AIDS

HIV has few or no symptoms for up to 10 years or
more before symptoms of AIDS develop

There is no cure, but treatment is available

Condoms offer good protection

stds-hiv-safer-sex/hiv-aids-4264.htm
