  7. One extremely important domain is task assistance: The goal is to make it possible for people to perform skilled tasks faster and with fewer errors in comparison with conventional means of assistance, such as computer-based documentation.
  8. Augmented reality is going to be of major importance in a wide range of domains. Here are some that my lab has explored. Let’s start with navigation and tourism, beginning with our backpack-based outdoor systems from 20 years ago. Of course, a modern smartphone has far more power than our early backpacks. But, the idea remains the same: To help a user understand and navigate their environment. For example, this is a restaurant guide that overlays the user’s view with information about nearby restaurants.
  9. Researchers have been exploring augmented reality for nearly 50 years, first with head-worn displays. And, later with hand-held ones. Now, head-worn augmented reality displays are finally poised to take off in commercial applications.
