Prohibition Of The Fourteenth Amendment Essay
Introduction: 21st Amendment Following the passage of the 18th Amendment in 1919, which
outlawed the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of alcohol, the United States entered a period of
time now known as Prohibition (U.S. Const. amend. XVIII). Immediately following the passage of the
18th Amendment, consumption of alcohol, alcohol related injuries, and crime decreased (Schaeffer,
2011, p. 402). However, it did not take long for the government to realize that Prohibition came with
many unintended consequences. According to Schaeffer (2011), state and local governments were ill
prepared to handle the vast responsibilities of enforcing the law, which led to increased organized
crime, corruption, and the failure of the law as a whole. 73% of Americans favored the repeal of the
18th Amendment in its entirety by the time the 21st Amendment was passed (Schaeffer, 2011, p. 408).
The 21st Amendment was finally ratified in 1933 effectively ending prohibition. Aside from repealing
the 18th Amendment, it also granted the states the right to regulate alcohol within their own borders
and set a time limit for ratification of the law (U.S. Const. amend. XXI). Overall, this amendment
decreased the powers of the federal government by delegating the authority over alcohol to the states.
In relation to the 21st Amendment, it shows several important aspects of public administration. First, it
highlights some of the public values that are integral to being an American citizen. According

How Junk Food Can End Obesity Freedman Analysis
In How Junk Food Can End Obesity by Freedman, the author critiques the wholesome food promoters
and how they believe people should eat healthy. He states that these people believe that real food is
only farm fresh food and that processed food is inherently unhealthy. However, Freedman states, that
even if they could get everyone to switch to farm fresh food, it would still not end obesity. He states
that this food actually has about the same fat content and contains other unhealthy materials which
make them equally bad as processed foods. Also, he states that people tend to not have access to this
food because it is more expensive. Also, those who are not health conscious will not eat it because
they do not believe that it will taste good.

The Chosen Event
The Chosen Event Although Meteorology has a variety of interesting subjects, there is one specific
event that I would like to focus on for analysis, lightning. Lightning does not receive as much
attention because it doesn t cause as much destruction as hail, tornado, or hurricane. However, it is just
as deadly. Lightning is intense, short, and a massive spark of electricity that is usually found in a
thunderstorm. For these reasons, I would like to focus on this event at two locations. One is the
lightning capital of the United States, Florida, and the other location is in Venezuela, which is known
as the everlasting storm. I would like to compare how often stores occur in these areas, how many
lightning strikes occur in each area on average

The Discovery Of Tungsten, Formerly Wolfram Or Wolframite
History
Tungsten, formerly Wolfram or Wolframite, is not naturally found in nature, and can only be created
by taking either protons or neutrons from naturally occurring substances. In the sixteenth century,
German smelters discovered it as an accompanying mineral to tin ores. When trying to smelt these
ores, they sometimes found foam like deposits would form, consuming the tin ores they found
valuable. Due to this phenomenon, it was said that it Tears away the tin and devours it like a wolf
devours sheep. and labeled somewhat of a nuisance material. The name wolfram was also due to the
substances black color and its hairy appearance. A century and a half later it would be given the name
Tungsten after another tungsten ore called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first were given to an engineer by the name of Robert Oxland, who had perfected the rendering
process. Oxlands process helped to open the pathway to industrialization, making Tungsten a metal
that was readily attainable for use in many different applications. Following his innovations, as soon
as ten years later, patents for tungsten used as an alloy in steels, and high speed steels became
common strengthening the material by as much as 20 percent. Many of the same steels are still in wide
use today. In 1904, Tungsten was used to replace the filaments in lightbulbs, as an alternative to the
much less efficient carbon filaments that were the standard of the era. This application was used to
illuminate the world, changing the way humans live forever, and is also still in wide use today. Only in
recent years have alternatives that are safer and more energy efficient been created.
Applications
Tungsten is applied to different metals for a variety of uses. In applications where strong steels are
needed, tungsten can be added in higher and lower quantities based on need to increase strength due to
its increased durability. Some common uses for the material are electron television tubes, filaments in
electric lamps, winding/heating elements for electric furnaces, missile/ high temperature applications,
and high speed tool steels to name a

Hearing Impairment Analysis
I enjoyed reading your post. I agree with you that having complete loss of your vision would be the
hardest for me too. Even though being deaf would be a challenge, I feel that I would be able to handle
it somewhat better. I feel that the hardest obstacle for me with being blind would be not seeing my
children growing up. As far as having a hearing impairment, I have a friend that was completely deaf
from birth and she has a little boy. She did have some challenges raising him when he was an infant,
but she had tools that she used like at night she would wear a sensor that would vibrate to alert her that
the baby monitor was going off. She handled it well because she this is all she knew. Luckily for her,
she can hear now after having surgery

Violence And Violence Among Children
Introduction While the rate of crime in the United States has decreased overall an increase in senseless
violence being committed by young people leaves individuals trying to understand what is to blame. It
is encouraging that the rate of crimes of violence in the United States has dropped about 15 percent
since 1999. However, self reported violent offending by American youth has not declined. (Funk et al.
1) Work place violence, road rage disputes and mass school shootings are just a few examples of
violence that has become common place in society. Adolescent perpetrating violent crimes has been
on the rise as is evident with the number of shootings and physical altercations in recent years. Many
have tried to identify what is causing this increase in violence among children. The growing problem
of violence and aggressive behavior in society is speculated to be credited in part to the rise of violent
video games.
Background
Over the past few decades the average person s daily routine has changed drastically through the rapid
development and advancements in technology. Most people living today can remember a time when
not every person had a cell phone and smartphones sounded more like science fiction than a reality. As
technology has made advancements the world of entertainment and the way people spend their free

Case Study--- Personalize Your Management Development
Case Study Personalize Your Management Development
As I am reading the case, Personalize Your Management Development, I really touched by the author
and I really learned a lot from the case. As everyone knows, different people have their different
characteristics so they will have their own principle and procedure to deal things. Therefore, the
different characteristics made the different working styles as manager. As a company, you will have a
lot of different managers so personalize the specific management development projects are really
essential to the company. After I read the case, I have a general sense about the different kinds of
managers in company and I can imagine what they will do in management. In the case, the author ...

The author told one of them that they are really talented but they are not fooling anyone. After that the
author tried some other ways to change those people and the more they proved themselves able to
learn from others, the more successful they would be. At the end the author found out that most of
those managers are using a self deprecating honesty to replace the phony self confidence.
Thirdly, the author introduced a kind of people who are unknown leader. Those people have the right
blend of confidence and leadership skills, but they fail to develop relationships outside of a small
circle of colleagues. In my opinion, those people are something like the reluctant one. Because they all
have the ability to lead the team but they lack a necessary confidence of leading. What is more, this
kind of unknown leader are seldom make network to other staffs in the company. So the author firstly
tried to let them aware that they will not get promoted if they didn t begin to network. Namely, asking
them to start talking and networking with others so that they could market for themselves. Therefore,
the author tried to train them from the first beginning, which is make them become more comfortable
meeting and talking with new people. After a period of exercise, those managers aware that they are
natural ability to think analytically and drive to a deeper level in conversations impressed others.
Besides, the people who are talking with them will also feel

Chicago Meatpacking Industry In The Early 1900 s
The Jungle portrays the harsh conditions of the Chicago meatpacking industry in the early 1900 s.
Jurgis Rudkus and Ona Lukoszaite recently emigrated from Lithuania to Chicago in search of a better
life. The conditions were the cause of Jurgis s injury to his ankle, which led to his frustrating
unemployment. Jurgis and Ona, a couple who planned on getting married, struggled throughout their
time Chicago due the treatment of immigrants. Jurgis always prevailed and assured his wife that
things would soon be better as he had believed in the American dream. The main characters, Jurgis
Rudkus and Ona Lukoszaite, were in pursuit of a better life in America. They believed that hard work
would pay off and they would soon be able to make their dreams come true. Working long days and

The Good Life Of Andrew Carnegie
Human nature dictates the necessity of being successful and happy, and to find internal contentment,
but what truly defines the good life? Everyone makes decisions about the person they want to be and
what is most important to them: Which do you value more, your wealth or your friendships? Do you
want to be famous or truly loved? Do you care what people think or are you just trying to please
yourself? I think the good life is a combination of everything, and is a fine line that everyone must
walk if they want to be truly content. Some people consider freedom the meaning of the good life.
Thoreau teaches that the good life is freedom from desire. To have a good life people must be free to
make their own choices and mistakes. However, other people have a different opinion about the good
life Andrew Carnegie believes people can find the good life through success and wealth. Yet still,
others want neither of these, choosing instead to stay innocent with no responsibilities like Adam and
Eve, free from decisions and the stresses of everyday life. Another view is Freud s Pleasure Principle
that suggests people are interested only in fun and doing whatever they want all the time. Moreover,
these people don t want to worry about anything else. I believe the definition of a good life can be
described in three simple words, freedom, love, and happiness. Freedom: we should be able to choose
where we live, work and what we do with our lives. Love: everyone should know what it feels

Difference Between Loyalty And Loyalty
Considering True Loyalty:
Loyal customers are excessively important to any business, and businesses spend great amount of their
time, energy and money analyzing and captivate those customers. However, the usual definition of a
loyal customer that we consider is a high spending customer, and that definition is imperfect.
Marketing to customers based on true loyalty requires more: complicated measurement, better spend
data, and considering that a regular customer is not the same as a loyal customer.
Traditional View of Loyalty:
Those who are Retailers commonly define a loyal customer as a high spending customer. However,
considering on a customer s spend within a single business while important tells only a fraction of the
story. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Heart
To protect true loyalty, a product requires having an affecting connection with its customers, though
suggestions vary as to what that delightful emotion supposed to be. Various people would advise that
it s all concerning with Trust. A few would suggest rising Passion for the product. Still some would
give an opinion of creating an emotional experience.
True loyalty exists when
Customers feel safe,
Appreciated and smart
Every single one is substantially affecting idea, but they are vague, unearthly, and exceedingly
difficult to make progress able. They may not state it clearly, but when presented with this type of
suggestion, many marketers secretly scratch their heads. What does an emotional connection indicate?
What do I do to create it? How do I know if I have accomplished it?
The Emotional Drivers of Loyalty:
Although Loyalty can be measured in behavioral conditions (repeat purchases, share of wallet, etc.), it
is a product of an emotional connection. Emotions make behavior; loyalty is produced when a product
makes a customer experience a positive way. Once we recognize which emotions makes loyalty, we
can build up progress able plans to enable customers to create this emotional

Short Story Casey At The Bat
In the short story Casey At The Bat the author uses humor to tell the story. I think the author does it to
explain the depth and meaning of the story. The author makes it where we expect something totally
different then what`s about to happen. Also I think the author uses it to tell the story better. I think this
because in the beginning of the story all the people were excited because Casey was coming up to bat
like they were screaming his name and everything. So that makes the reader think he`s a big deal
because everyone is going crazy when Casey steps up to the plate. So the first to balls that were

Joan Of Arc As A Saint
From Stake to Saint Medieval knights are known for being strong, brave, and faithful. However, a
well known warrior in the Hundred Years War also shares these attributes. What makes her different is
that she was a French peasant girl. At the age of 13, Joan of Arc heard voices from God telling her to
save France. In the midst of the Hundred Years War, a conflict between England and France for the
French throne, Joan was told to drive the English out of France, and see that Charles VII receive the
crown. As a devout Catholic, Joan was going to make sure this happened. Joan s courage and
determination let her accomplish her task. Even in her darkest times, she stayed strong and faithful.
She inspires people to this day, and left a legacy. Even though she was burned at the stake after being
accused of witchcraft, she is remembered as a saint and a hero. Joan of Arc s many achievements in
battle and her legacy in French history lived on for her to become a saint centuries later. Joan of Arc
started her journey to becoming a saint in 1428, when she felt that heavenly voices spoke to her (Beck
360). The voices informed her that Charles VII was the true king of France, and needed to get the
crown. He was called Dauphin, or rightful heir. Joan seeked an audience with him, and ventured to
Vaucouleurs, a stronghold of Charles VII, where she told the captain of the garrison about her visions.
Unfortunately, he did not believe her, so he sent her home. However, Joan refused to give

Essay on Multilateral Intervention within ASEAN
The admission of Burma into ASEAN and the reluctance of ASEAN to resolve Burma s ongoing
political turmoil (the most recent, 2010 elections) have sparked off much debate and controversy
among the member states as well as the international community. This is because ASEAN upheavals
the non interference principle in managing its inter relations, indicating lack of credibility, importance
and unity. Therefore, this policy memo will suggest some short and long term strategies that will re

United States
The United States are negotiating on free trade agreements (TIFA) with ASEAN, though the
negotiations are relatively inactive due to some hindrances such as lack of transparency, large amount
of bureaucratic paperwork to do business, especially in Burma (Aung Zwa) inequality (preferential
policies) barring foreigners from the lucrative public procurement sector practiced by some member
states of ASEAN (Lee Hock Guan). Besides that on the foreign policy and security front, the United
States realizes the importance of ASEAN in facilitating to materialize its interest, to contain the rising
of China and thus to remain as the hegemonic power in South East Asia. ASEAN is also playing as a
key partner in combating against terrorism. This is because some Islamic extremist groups which are
linked to Al Qaeda had been using ASEAN countries to meet up for their attacks.
China Firstly, there has been an influx of assistance, trade and investment from China to Burma. This
can be seen as in just ten years, trade between Burma and China grew from US$15million to US$800
million. For instance, from 1991 to 1995, about $US740 million of approximately US$1 billion in
arms purchased by Burma came from China. Therefore, China maintains a good relation with Burma
because Burma had been importing its military hardware. Secondly,

How Mourad Mazouz Started his Restaurant, Sketch
In 2001, just after signing the lease for 9 Conduit Street, London a Grade II listed building Mourad
Mazouz went to Paris. Not yet knowing what he would do inside he went on a mission to find a chef
to collaborate with. Mazouz was already a reputable and successful restaurateur with his celebrated
restaurants Au Bascou and 404 in Paris as well as Momo in London. The listed townhouse was
designed as the private residence of James Viner by James Wyatt in 1779. After that it filled many
roles over the years including being converted into the headquarters of Royal Society of British
Architects (RIBA) from 1887 1909. In 1954 it became Christian Dior s first boutique where Dior
stored his collections in London.
In Paris Mazouz set up a meeting with Pierre Gagnaire, My plan was to ask if he had someone in mind
in his kitchen for this venture, but he said, Why not me? I freaked out, I had not planned to work with
a master. But I said, That s great!
It reminded Gagnaire of Saint Étienne where his restaurant had gone bankrupt during the recession of
the early 1990s. Mazouz later elaborated His restaurant was doing molecular food before anyone else,
so for me the story of Sketch, and our friendship, started with his old restaurant. He s told me a few
times since, that for him, Sketch is like a revenge: while it couldn t work in Saint Étienne, it could in
London.

Debating The Evidence On Spanking

Debating the Evidence on Spanking
According to Smith (2012), spanking does not lead to immediate obedience. Alan Kazdin, a Yale
University psychology professor and director of the Yale Parenting Center and Child Conduct Clinic,
says spanking does not work and you cannot punish out these behaviors that you do not want.
Spanking does not lead to long term obedience either. Graham Bermann (2008) says that physical
punishment can work momentarily to stop problematic behavior because children are afraid of being
hit, but it doesn t work in the long term and can make children more aggressive. There are three major
negative outcomes that are correlated with spanking. First, physical punishment ... Show more content

The research on disciplinary spanking is misleading. There are three major criticisms of the research
against spanking. The first is correlational which does not prove causation. All of the evidence against
spanking has been based on correlations. Most of Gershoff and Grogan Kaylor s evidence is based on
cross sectional correlations. These correlations only consider data collected during one time period
without considering the previous state of the research participants. This kind of correlation technique
superficially makes spanking appear to cause aggression since the children spanked more often are the
children who were more aggressive during the same time period. This is a problem for research on
spanking because there is no way to tell what came first in cross correlational research so there is no
way to tell what affects what. Even if infrequent spanking is correlated with better outcomes than
overly frequent spanking, that does not prove that zero spanking is best. Every child is different. There
is not a certain amount of times a child can be spanked in order for them to change behavior. Only 4 of
their 75 studies were limited to two open handed swats to the buttocks for child defiance. The other 71
studies lumped together all spanking regardless of how it was implemented and why it was used. Not
all spanking is the same, some is stronger

The Famous Chicago Style Hot Dogs
In United States, the hotdog is as American as apple pie; however, the sausages were culturally
imported from Germany, called Frankfurters and eventually popularized and renamed ,hotdog, in the
U.S. In Chicago, there s a specialty hotdog that almost all Chicagoans and tourist eat. It s so special
that there are over thousand made in small food stands throughout Chicago. On February 8th, 2014, I
went to Donald s Famous Hotdogs in Chicago Illinois. Donald s is a small diner serving soup,
sandwiches, and hotdogs. I ordered the best item on the menu, the Chicago style hotdog. The Chicago
style hotdog stands out from the rest because it s delicious flavor, colorful presentation and variety of
condiments.
What separates Donald s Chicago style the other Chicago style hotdog is not the topping but the
fundamental idea of hot dog, the sausage. There are two types of hotdog sausages, wieners which tend
to contain pork and chicken or turkey. Theses sausages are inexpensive but lack in flavor while
frankfurters or franks tend to more expensive, nevertheless are all beef and strongly seasoned. Equally
important is the hotdog s casing. Traditional casing is made from the small intestines of sheep; it s
known as natural casing franks. These sausages have firm texture and have a signature snap that
releases its juicy flavor when bitten. Donald s Chicago style hotdog is served with an all beef frank
which adds to taste overall. The recognizable curved shape of the hotdog is

Do Not Text, Just Drive Essay
Texting, as of right now, is one of the most used ways of communication. But when texting is mixed
with driving, it is not the safest combination. Texting and driving should be banned in all fifty states
for all ages because texting is a privilege, not a right, it is a distraction, it is dangerous, and innocent
lives have been tremendously affected. Although cell phone usage has become extremely evolved
within this decade, it still has brought many flaws throughout our nation. One would think with the
total number of deaths and numerous accidents that the entire nation would eventually come to a
conclusion about this issue. But as of right now, twelve states prohibit all drivers from using hand held
cell phones while driving. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By any means, being patient and texting someone later cannot lead to danger or death of others. Start
realizing that texting in general, is not a priority or right for anyone to do, it is simply a privilege.
Texting and driving should be banned in all fifty states because texting is a distraction that keeps
drivers away from the road. According to the book Brain Rules, while multitasking, research shows
your error rate goes up 50 percent and it takes you twice as long to do things. (Cooper) Texting
someone is nearly the same as talking on the phone, therefore, it s an ongoing conversation. But
driving is an ongoing action, excluding stop signs and stoplights as well. As a driver the main focus is
the road. In order to send a text, the cell phone has to be the main focus. For example, if a driver is at a
stop sign, receives a text, and decides to look down at the phone. The driver s eyes, hands, and focus
completely move toward the phone and not the road anymore, which is the main focus. With this
situation, there are a number of things that can go wrong. Someone can switch lanes really quickly, a

Multiculturalism has played a significant role in Canada, since its establishment 40 years ago. Much
of Canadian society is reflective of different cultures from around the world making multiculturalism a
very relevant topic to Canadians. While it can be argued that the majority of Canadians are in favor of
multiculturalism, there are some who hold a different opinion. Though some critics claim that
multiculturalism promotes a form of hyphenated Canadianism that exacerbates divisions in Canadian
society based on such characteristics like ethnic, minority, or immigrant status, the social advantages

Minority groups have served multiple different business sectors helping overall benefit our economy.
The paragraph will also divulge into the political benefits both multiculturalism and immigrants
provide to Canada. Canada sees high rates of political participation from foreign born citizens due to
the country s multiculturalist nature. Economically, Canada is fortunate to have a high number of
immigrants in its territory. Finally, the paper will conclude with the explanation of alternatives to
multiculturalism. These alternatives are typically considered negative which will further illustrate why
immigrants and a multicultural society is important to Canada. Multiculturalism is a crucial aspect to
Canada in which it diminishes the divisions in Canadian society based on one s race, religion, and
culture. Social advantages of multiculturalism in Canada prove to be very beneficial to Canadian
society. When discussing multiculturalism in regards to its use and policies in Canada, it is important
to first, give its definition as well as explain its history. Multiculturalism relates to or is made up of
several different cultures and is typically used to as an adjective to describe a society (Merriam

(Guo + Wong, 107). Multiculturalism can be seen as a catch all term, which encompasses the fusion or

Ballad Of Birmingham Analysis
On the surface level Dudley Randall s Ballad of Birmingham, is of a tragic event that has
misfortunately happened. A bombing on a church that has led to the loss of life. Looking at it s history
however, Randall forefronts all the emotions from the speaker with chilling diction and a rhythmic
pattern of rhyming the second and fourth line of each stanza. It brings to life a darker truth, one that
has yet to end. The poem begins first with a conversation between a mother and her daughter Mother
dear, may I go downtown instead of out to play, and march the streets of Birmingham in a Freedom
March today? This conversation occurred in 1963 Birmingham, Alabama at the height of the Civil
Rights era with Martin Luther King Jr. leading marchers advocating for equality in one of the most
racist places. The daughter asks her mother for permission to be a part of the movement but the
mother denies her as she fears for her safety No, baby, no, you may not go, for the dogs are fierce and
wild, and clubs and hoses, guns and jails aren t good for a little child. The mother is aware that black
people are not treated fairly in society but is also aware of how those that try to retaliate against it are
beaten near death or are seriously injured by dogs or pressurized hoses. She does not want her
daughter to be hurt or killed. Despite so, the daughter tries to convince her mother to let her go, But
mother, I won t be alone. Other children will go with me, and march the streets of

Reasons For US Involvement In Vietnam
The defeat of the French is a key point that led to increased US involvement in the problems in
Vietnam. After the defeat of the French the country split in to two, the North being communist and the
south being the opposite. The north which the leader of the time was Ho Chi Minh wanted to take over
the south. America did not want this to occur because it would cause the domino theory to take action
which directly links to countries that are in American interest.
The Americans began to fear that communism was about to spread its way across South East Asia
when in 1949 China became a communist country under the leadership of Mao Zedong, and when he
started to provide the Vietminh with essential military supplies (2). The USA feared that if one country
in South East Asia fell to communism, the rest would also fall like a row of dominoes, this was the
Domino Theory (2, 3). They were also scared that the Philippines which was in their power at the time
would turn against them and also try to become communist due to Vietnam becoming communist.
This made the Americans feel much more strongly about getting involved with the conflict in Vietnam
and put the theory of the Truman doctrine in to action to stop the spread of communism. ... Show more

Nortel rose to the top and was considered a giant corporation. It was considered the largest
communication company in Canada prior filing bankruptcy in 2009. In the 1990s the company
operated within the broadband and wireless communication network making its growth increasingly
high. Nortel reached its highest peak in September 2000 with its highest profit of $390 billion. The
company was thriving and the stakeholder shares value reached a whopping $200 by the 2000s

In the US alone, Nortel installed over 50 million of optical cables within three years. When they
purchased the San Francisco based Bay Networks in the US for $9.1 billion in a share for share deal,
the company increased their growth and was considered number one in the network community. ...

The Doctor-Patient Relationship Is The Primary Mode Of
The doctor patient relationship is the primary mode of cognition that is at the heart of the discourse of
medicine and bioethics. Healthcare is constructed around encounters between practitioners and
patients, and the relationship between them is integral to how the cultures of healing are at work and
represented in literature, in history and social sciences around the world. Life and mortality are two
great questions of being that perennially haunt the human existence; and physicians play the most
significant role in negotiating between the physical and the metaphysical worlds of being, suffering
and trying to find cure and comfort as long as life goes on. The cultures of healing across time, space

This is Foucault s famous observation in The Birth of the Clinic ( as translated into English in 1973)
where he illustrates the doctor patient relationship in terms of power, and the subject object hierarchy.
The diseased body is in disorder, in a state of displacement, and its subjectivity is erased as it becomes
subject to the doctor s examination. In several literary works of the nineteenth century, such
representations of doctor patient relationship are to be found as corresponding to the Foucauldian
pattern, that is, turning the patient s subjectivity into an object of the doctor s authoritative gaze.
However, since Foucault himself has elsewhere insisted on the double meaning of subject (1982, 212),
it is possible to problematize the doctor patient relation and attempt to come to terms with one s own
subject object position within the established discourse of medical gaze. It is interesting, however, to
examine how literary representations of doctor patient relationships across cultures and nationalities
have interrogated the notion of seeing as an alternative mode of vision.
Opthalmology as a special branch of medical science established itself quite seriously in the Victorian
period. Wilkie Collins Poor Miss Finch (1872) is a medical surgical novel , and the surgery is operated

Systems Theory, Ecological Theory And Sociological...
It goes without saying that police officers will respond to an unimaginable amount of domestic
violence investigations during their career. Sadly, these investigations have been found to account for
22% of in the line of duty deaths (National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 2016). Lesson
1 of this course has introduced me to various theories to explain the causes of domestic violence,
which in turn has expanded on my perception of these investigations. I have chosen to focus on the
following theories: systems theory, ecological theory and exchange theory.
All the above noted theories are sociological perspectives. Proponents of sociological theories of
family violence believe that family violence is a normal part of family life (Gelles Straus, 1979).
Specifically, systems theory proposes that domestic/family violence is normal rather than abnormal.
Systems theory suggests that the cycle of violence is a result of cause effect. Whether or not the
violence continues is directly related to the feedback from the violence. Positive feedback increases
the likelihood of future violence, whereas negative feedback reduces the likelihood of violence
(Straus, 1973).
Ecological theory is similar to systems theory, in that it focuses on interrelated networks that either
influence or discourage violent behavior. Donald Dutton ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Exchange theorists identify three points of the cause of violence; 1. Violence occurs when the rewards
outweigh costs, 2. A lack of social controls within the family decrease the potential costs, thereby
increasing violence, 3. Inequality within family and social structures reduce the costs and thereby
increase the rewards of using violence (Gelles, 1983). Proponents of this theory believe that to reduce
family violence the rewards must be decreased, and the costs must be

Hall Of Justice Analysis
During the conversation between Joe and Louis in Act II, Scene 7, Joe explains that the day before, he
accidentally showed up for work at the Hall of Justice on a Sunday. Due to the fact that the Hall is
closed on Sundays, Joe arrived to discover a deserted courthouse and panicked, thinking, The whole
Hall of Justice, it s empty, it s deserted, it s gone out of business. Forever (Kushner 78). Although it
was deserted simply due to the fact that it was Sunday, the empty Hall of Justice symbolizes freedom.
Specifically, this can be seen when Joe states, It would be...heartless terror. Yes. Terrible, and...Very

empty Hall of Justice symbolizes freedom from both the Hall and the idea of justice itself. Aside from
this point in the play, the subject of justice had been brought up twice before. Immediately preceding
Joe s description of an empty Hall of Justice, in Act II, Scene 6, Joe had struggled with the concepts of
justice and ethics when contemplating accepting the job offer Roy had provided him with.
Specifically, Roy obtained the opportunity to join the Justice Department in Washington, D.C. in order

law and ethics. In response, Roy argues, I must have eyes in

The Cultural Landscape Of Asian And Latin American Countries
Abstract
Street markets have always been a significant aspect of the cultural landscape of Asian and Latin
American countries such as China, Thailand, India, Brazil and Mexico. These markets become
creators of vital public space and with time, through their actions, appropriate loose space and make a
permanent place for themselves in the collective memory of people, eventually contributing to the
cultural identity of these neighborhoods. Yet, this potential of markets to become successful and
vibrant social spaces and a solution to the class divided hierarchical cities of today, is often not
acknowledged or accepted by civic authorities. The State s policy towards these street markets in

Informal Markets: Creators of Public Space
Public Markets play a central role in the formation of public culture and have an articulated
relationship with space and society. They morphologically shape space and also shape social networks
and economic systems. A large share of market not absorbed by formal economic activities becomes a
part of the informal market. It also represents a significant percentage of the national economy, and
guarantees jobs to a large number of people. They are rather a sign of heroic entrepreneurship
(Hernando de Soto 2000), or of informal survivalism as (Mike David 2004) puts it, a primarily mode
of livelihood in majority of the Third World countries. Through their act of an informalized production
of space, they maximize limited space or create space where no space exists in commercially viable
prime locations, thereby creating an economic opportunity out of it and social space as a by product.
While market places fulfil economic considerations, by providing an alternative means of livelihoods
to millions, they also perform an indispensable social function by becoming communal spaces, giving
life to neighborhoods. Overtime, they become an intrinsic part of the cultural landscape of any
neighborhood or city and become places of social gathering at the street level. They act as a catchment
area for a community, and provide food, entertainment and social interaction and hence, they

How do different environments affect the reactivity of catalase?
If we add water to the to the hydrogen peroxide, then the reaction will not be as extreme as the control

the reaction will be stronger than the control group because the acids are working together. In this

each). The dependent variable is the rate of reaction measured in seconds, and kPa, and the constants
are the amount paper/ liver on the paper (one saturated piece), amount of hydrogen peroxide (twenty

If we add HCl to the hydrogen peroxide, then the reaction will be stronger than the control group
because the acids are working together. The data that was collected supported our hypothesis on the
water group , because the kPa pressure went from 0 to 108 in sixty seconds. However it did not
support our hypothesis on the hydrocloric acid group only went 0 to 102 in sixty seconds. The water
group reaction was less extreme because the hydrogen peroxide was diluted, but the hydrochloric acid
group was not more extreme because the acids did not work together like we predicted they would.
Our data could have been more accurate if pressure was applied to the test tube the second the liver
was dropped into the mixture. If the liver solution was blended/ processed properly (how it would
inside the liver organ), so that the puree stayed consistent with livers position, along with this how the
liver was preserved might also play a role in the lab data by decreasing things such as it s properties.
This could have been prevented if it was fresh liver with no processing. Also to have more valid data,
more data could be collected and averaged. Another cause of error could be the pipettes not being

Why Should You Respect Your Respect
Introduction: Respect. What does it mean and who deserves your respect? Respect is generally
considered a positive feeling or an action shown towards someone or something considered important.
It is a sense of admiration for good or valuable qualities. It is also the process of honoring someone by
exhibiting consideration for their needs or feelings.
Some people think that showing respect is somehow degrading. They feel that it is the weak peoples

shows that you is secure enough on your own, to be able to look out into the world to see the value in

  • 2. Prohibition Of The Fourteenth Amendment Essay Introduction: 21st Amendment Following the passage of the 18th Amendment in 1919, which outlawed the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of alcohol, the United States entered a period of time now known as Prohibition (U.S. Const. amend. XVIII). Immediately following the passage of the 18th Amendment, consumption of alcohol, alcohol related injuries, and crime decreased (Schaeffer, 2011, p. 402). However, it did not take long for the government to realize that Prohibition came with many unintended consequences. According to Schaeffer (2011), state and local governments were ill prepared to handle the vast responsibilities of enforcing the law, which led to increased organized crime, corruption, and the failure of the law as a whole. 73% of Americans favored the repeal of the 18th Amendment in its entirety by the time the 21st Amendment was passed (Schaeffer, 2011, p. 408). The 21st Amendment was finally ratified in 1933 effectively ending prohibition. Aside from repealing the 18th Amendment, it also granted the states the right to regulate alcohol within their own borders and set a time limit for ratification of the law (U.S. Const. amend. XXI). Overall, this amendment decreased the powers of the federal government by delegating the authority over alcohol to the states. In relation to the 21st Amendment, it shows several important aspects of public administration. First, it highlights some of the public values that are integral to being an American citizen. • 3. How Junk Food Can End Obesity Freedman Analysis In How Junk Food Can End Obesity by Freedman, the author critiques the wholesome food promoters and how they believe people should eat healthy. He states that these people believe that real food is only farm fresh food and that processed food is inherently unhealthy. However, Freedman states, that even if they could get everyone to switch to farm fresh food, it would still not end obesity. He states that this food actually has about the same fat content and contains other unhealthy materials which make them equally bad as processed foods. Also, he states that people tend to not have access to this food because it is more expensive. Also, those who are not health conscious will not eat it because they do not believe that it will taste good. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lightning does not receive as much attention because it doesn t cause as much destruction as hail, tornado, or hurricane. However, it is just as deadly. Lightning is intense, short, and a massive spark of electricity that is usually found in a thunderstorm. For these reasons, I would like to focus on this event at two locations. One is the lightning capital of the United States, Florida, and the other location is in Venezuela, which is known as the everlasting storm. I would like to compare how often stores occur in these areas, how many lightning strikes occur in each area on average ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Discovery Of Tungsten, Formerly Wolfram Or Wolframite History Tungsten, formerly Wolfram or Wolframite, is not naturally found in nature, and can only be created by taking either protons or neutrons from naturally occurring substances. In the sixteenth century, German smelters discovered it as an accompanying mineral to tin ores. When trying to smelt these ores, they sometimes found foam like deposits would form, consuming the tin ores they found valuable. Many of the same steels are still in wide use today. In 1904, Tungsten was used to replace the filaments in lightbulbs, as an alternative to the much less efficient carbon filaments that were the standard of the era. This application was used to illuminate the world, changing the way humans live forever, and is also still in wide use today. Only in recent years have alternatives that are safer and more energy efficient been created. Applications Tungsten is applied to different metals for a variety of uses. In applications where strong steels are needed, tungsten can be added in higher and lower quantities based on need to increase strength due to its increased durability. Some common uses for the material are electron television tubes, filaments in electric lamps, winding/heating elements for electric furnaces, missile/ high temperature applications, and high speed tool steels to name a ... Even though being deaf would be a challenge, I feel that I would be able to handle it somewhat better. I feel that the hardest obstacle for me with being blind would be not seeing my children growing up. As far as having a hearing impairment, I have a friend that was completely deaf from birth and she has a little boy. She did have some challenges raising him when he was an infant, but she had tools that she used like at night she would wear a sensor that would vibrate to alert her that the baby monitor was going off. Violence And Violence Among Children Introduction While the rate of crime in the United States has decreased overall an increase in senseless violence being committed by young people leaves individuals trying to understand what is to blame. It is encouraging that the rate of crimes of violence in the United States has dropped about 15 percent since 1999. However, self reported violent offending by American youth has not declined. (Funk et al. 1) Work place violence, road rage disputes and mass school shootings are just a few examples of violence that has become common place in society. Adolescent perpetrating violent crimes has been on the rise as is evident with the number of shootings and physical altercations in recent years. Many have tried to identify what is causing this increase in violence among children. The growing problem of violence and aggressive behavior in society is speculated to be credited in part to the rise of violent video games. • 11. The Good Life Of Andrew Carnegie Human nature dictates the necessity of being successful and happy, and to find internal contentment, but what truly defines the good life? Everyone makes decisions about the person they want to be and what is most important to them: Which do you value more, your wealth or your friendships? Do you want to be famous or truly loved? Do you care what people think or are you just trying to please yourself? I think the good life is a combination of everything, and is a fine line that everyone must walk if they want to be truly content. Some people consider freedom the meaning of the good life. Thoreau teaches that the good life is freedom from desire. To have a good life people must be free to make their own choices and mistakes. However, other people have a different opinion about the good life Andrew Carnegie believes people can find the good life through success and wealth. Yet still, others want neither of these, choosing instead to stay innocent with no responsibilities like Adam and Eve, free from decisions and the stresses of everyday life. Another view is Freud s Pleasure Principle that suggests people are interested only in fun and doing whatever they want all the time. Moreover, these people don t want to worry about anything else. I believe the definition of a good life can be described in three simple words, freedom, love, and happiness. Freedom: we should be able to choose where we live, work and what we do with our lives. Love: everyone should know what it feels ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The author makes it where we expect something totally different then what`s about to happen. Also I think the author uses it to tell the story better. I think this because in the beginning of the story all the people were excited because Casey was coming up to bat like they were screaming his name and everything. However, a well known warrior in the Hundred Years War also shares these attributes. What makes her different is that she was a French peasant girl. At the age of 13, Joan of Arc heard voices from God telling her to save France. In the midst of the Hundred Years War, a conflict between England and France for the French throne, Joan was told to drive the English out of France, and see that Charles VII receive the crown. As a devout Catholic, Joan was going to make sure this happened. Joan s courage and determination let her accomplish her task. Even in her darkest times, she stayed strong and faithful. She inspires people to this day, and left a legacy. Even though she was burned at the stake after being accused of witchcraft, she is remembered as a saint and a hero. Joan of Arc s many achievements in battle and her legacy in French history lived on for her to become a saint centuries later. Joan of Arc started her journey to becoming a saint in 1428, when she felt that heavenly voices spoke to her (Beck 360). The voices informed her that Charles VII was the true king of France, and needed to get the crown. He was called Dauphin, or rightful heir. Joan seeked an audience with him, and ventured to Vaucouleurs, a stronghold of Charles VII, where she told the captain of the garrison about her visions. Spanking does not lead to long term obedience either. There are three major criticisms of the research against spanking. The first is correlational which does not prove causation. All of the evidence against spanking has been based on correlations. Most of Gershoff and Grogan Kaylor s evidence is based on cross sectional correlations. These correlations only consider data collected during one time period without considering the previous state of the research participants. This kind of correlation technique superficially makes spanking appear to cause aggression since the children spanked more often are the children who were more aggressive during the same time period. This is a problem for research on spanking because there is no way to tell what came first in cross correlational research so there is no way to tell what affects what. Even if infrequent spanking is correlated with better outcomes than overly frequent spanking, that does not prove that zero spanking is best. Every child is different. There is not a certain amount of times a child can be spanked in order for them to change behavior. According to the book Brain Rules, while multitasking, research shows your error rate goes up 50 percent and it takes you twice as long to do things. (Cooper) Texting someone is nearly the same as talking on the phone, therefore, it s an ongoing conversation. But driving is an ongoing action, excluding stop signs and stoplights as well. As a driver the main focus is the road. In order to send a text, the cell phone has to be the main focus. For example, if a driver is at a stop sign, receives a text, and decides to look down at the phone. The driver s eyes, hands, and focus completely move toward the phone and not the road anymore, which is the main focus. With this situation, there are a number of things that can go wrong. Someone can switch lanes really quickly, a baby can walk out the street, a car could suddenly stop, etc. So any drivers, who plan on multitasking while driving, think twice before making that decision. After the defeat of the French the country split in to two, the North being communist and the south being the opposite. America did not want this to occur because it would cause the domino theory to take action which directly links to countries that are in American interest. The Americans began to fear that communism was about to spread its way across South East Asia when in 1949 China became a communist country under the leadership of Mao Zedong, and when he started to provide the Vietminh with essential military supplies (2). The USA feared that if one country in South East Asia fell to communism, the rest would also fall like a row of dominoes, this was the Domino Theory (2, 3). Life and mortality are two great questions of being that perennially haunt the human existence; and physicians play the most significant role in negotiating between the physical and the metaphysical worlds of being, suffering and trying to find cure and comfort as long as life goes on. This is Foucault s famous observation in The Birth of the Clinic ( as translated into English in 1973) where he illustrates the doctor patient relationship in terms of power, and the subject object hierarchy. The diseased body is in disorder, in a state of displacement, and its subjectivity is erased as it becomes subject to the doctor s examination. In several literary works of the nineteenth century, such representations of doctor patient relationship are to be found as corresponding to the Foucauldian pattern, that is, turning the patient s subjectivity into an object of the doctor s authoritative gaze. However, since Foucault himself has elsewhere insisted on the double meaning of subject (1982, 212), it is possible to problematize the doctor patient relation and attempt to come to terms with one s own subject object position within the established discourse of medical gaze. It is interesting, however, to examine how literary representations of doctor patient relationships across cultures and nationalities have interrogated the notion of seeing as an alternative mode of vision. Sadly, these investigations have been found to account for 22% of in the line of duty deaths (National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 2016). Lesson 1 of this course has introduced me to various theories to explain the causes of domestic violence, which in turn has expanded on my perception of these investigations. I have chosen to focus on the following theories: systems theory, ecological theory and exchange theory. All the above noted theories are sociological perspectives. Proponents of sociological theories of family violence believe that family violence is a normal part of family life (Gelles Straus, 1979). Specifically, systems theory proposes that domestic/family violence is normal rather than abnormal. Systems theory suggests that the cycle of violence is a result of cause effect. Whether or not the violence continues is directly related to the feedback from the violence. Positive feedback increases the likelihood of future violence, whereas negative feedback reduces the likelihood of violence (Straus, 1973). It also represents a significant percentage of the national economy, and guarantees jobs to a large number of people. They are rather a sign of heroic entrepreneurship (Hernando de Soto 2000), or of informal survivalism as (Mike David 2004) puts it, a primarily mode of livelihood in majority of the Third World countries. • 35. Catalase Lab Report How do different environments affect the reactivity of catalase? If we add water to the to the hydrogen peroxide, then the reaction will not be as extreme as the control group because the hydrogen peroxide will be diluted. If we add HCl to the hydrogen peroxide, then the reaction will be stronger than the control group because the acids are working together. In this experiment the independent variable was the HCl and water added into the hydrogen peroxide (10 ml each). The dependent variable is the rate of reaction measured in seconds, and kPa, and the constants are the amount paper/ liver on the paper (one saturated piece), amount of hydrogen peroxide (twenty ml) and the amount of the independent variable (10ml). If we add HCl to the hydrogen peroxide, then the reaction will be stronger than the control group because the acids are working together. The data that was collected supported our hypothesis on the water group , because the kPa pressure went from 0 to 108 in sixty seconds. However it did not support our hypothesis on the hydrocloric acid group only went 0 to 102 in sixty seconds. The water group reaction was less extreme because the hydrogen peroxide was diluted, but the hydrochloric acid group was not more extreme because the acids did not work together like we predicted they would. Our data could have been more accurate if pressure was applied to the test tube the second the liver was dropped into the mixture. If the liver solution was blended/ processed properly (how it would inside the liver organ), so that the puree stayed consistent with livers position, along with this how the liver was preserved might also play a role in the lab data by decreasing things such as it s properties. This could have been prevented if it was fresh liver with no processing. Also to have more valid data, more data could be collected and averaged. Another cause of error could be the pipettes not being cleaned when measuring different materials. The reason that it s important to know this in life is so we know what ...
