Introduction to Stealth Technology
•
Stealth Technology or Low Observable Technology (LO
technology) is a sub- discipline of military tactics and passive
electronic countermeasures.s
•
It cover a range of techniques used with personnel, aircraft,
ships, submarines, missiles and satellites to make them less
visible (ideally invisible) to radar, infrared, sonar and other
detection methods.
Arya Institute of Engineering and Technology29-11-2020 3
Stealth Technology in Naval Warfare
• Stealth Technology finds its extensive application in the Naval
Domain also as many ships and submarines are designed and
fabricated as per the technology.
• It uses design, material and advanced technology to ensure
that a warship or submarine avoids detection by electronic
systems. A stealth ship or submarine aims at becoming
invisible to Radar, Sonar and Infrared systems.

Principle and Working
Principle:
Stealth technology is not a single technology but a combination
of technologies that attempt to greatly reduce the distances at
which a vehicle can be detected; in particular radar cross section
reductions, but also acoustic, thermal, and other aspects.
Stealth technology works on the principle of eliminating radar
reflections. This can be done by either:
• Deflecting Radio Waves (Shaping of the surfaces)
• Absorbing Radio Waves (RAM coatings)
Arya Institute of Engineering and Technology29-11-2020 5
Principle and Working
Radar cross-section (RCS) reductions are achieved by :
• Vehicle Shape and Design
The shape and design are such that they deflect the incoming
radio waves due to their clean yet angular design. The radio
waves get deflected due to the presence of angled physical
elements.

Principle and Working
Radar cross-section (RCS) reductions are achieved by :
• Material
Radar-absorbing material (RAM), often as paints, are used
esepically on the edges of metal surfaces they absorb radiated
energy from a radar station into the coating and convert it to
heat rather than reflect it back. Current technologies include
dielectric composites and metal fibers containing ferrite
isotopes. A commonly used material is known as “Iron Ball
Paint”.

Advantages
• Ships and Submarines using Stealth Technology are almost
undetectable by RADAR.
• They can be used for secret missions due to their unmatched
ability to disguise the radio waves.
• Since they aren't noticeable, they ensure relatively better
safety of the pilot and crew as compared to the ships and
submarines using conventional technology.
Arya Institute of Engineering and Technology29-11-2020 10
Current use
• Currently many countries including: USA, UK, France, Sweden,
India etc. are using Stealth Ships and submarines.
• Stealth Ships and submarines are generally used for patrolling
and spying purposes of disputed waters.
• Due to their inability to carry relatively less payload, they
somewhat are less suitable for direct combat instead of that
they are unchallengeable when it comes to launch a surprise
attack.
Arya Institute of Engineering and Technology29-11-2020 11
Future
•
Improvement in designs are in progress as the ships and
submarines become detectable when they open the weapon
bay.
•
Different countries are working on prototypes of ships and
submarines with improved payload.
•
Development of advanced RADAR absorbing materials (RAM)
is in progress.
Arya Institute of Engineering and Technology29-11-2020 12
Conclusion
Stealth technology is an interesting and topic and as much of the
research and technology development done in this area is
secretive, it is impossible to know exactly what sort of new
advances lie in the future. The stealth technology has gone as far
as it could go but the fact still lie that all stealth aircraft are
vulnerable to existing and futuristic counter-stealth technologies.
