Regen Nautic has developed a serial hybrid marine propulsion system that significantly reduces fossil fuel usage and carbon pollution. The system uses permanent magnet brushless electric motors that can convert up to 95% of available energy with no emissions except a small amount of heat. Battery banks store power for propulsion and other loads, and are recharged intermittently and efficiently by variable speed generators or shore power. This limits generator run time to only when needed, reducing emissions and energy loss. The hybrid system allows vessels to operate emission-free in harbors and while docked. Regen addresses the power needs of larger vessels by combining multiple smaller electric motors.

EcoPost is a company located in Kenya that manufactures plastic lumber from recycled plastic waste and sawdust. Carlton Solle witnessed the beauty of nature in Costa Rica but also its vulnerability, inspiring him to design a sustainable water bottle that reduces ocean trash. Called Treeson Spring Water, the bottle compresses into a leaf and has a prepaid label to return to the source for recycling into energy. For every bottle purchased, a tree is planted, offsetting American trash and allowing consumers to track their tree's planting through an app. The product aims to accelerate global change through easy consumer participation in sustainability.
Project Sense
Project Sense introduces a cost efficient system that uses drones equipped with environmental sensors to sample ship plumes and detect non-compliant emissions during cruise. By combining sensor data with AIS data and advanced analysis, the system can report violations of emission regulations in real-time to enable effective enforcement. Project Sense takes an innovative approach with low-cost drones to monitor ship emissions and does not require highly sensitive sensors. It can scale quickly to cover many geographies simultaneously using inexpensive, ready-available hardware and custom software to handle large amounts of data.
Mainstream Electric Vehicles
Talino EV is developing technology to lower the cost of electric vehicles to be equal to gasoline-powered vehicles by connecting micro-businesses in manufacturing, sales, financing, and service delivery. This will accelerate sales of clean and efficient electric vehicles to the global emerging middle class by lowering up-front purchase costs through frequent, installment payments, making mass adoption of electric vehicles possible for the first time. More electric vehicles for commercial transportation in dense megacities will decrease pollution and illness from decreased combustion vehicles while reducing dependence on imported oil.
Serial hybrid marine propulsion
Regen Nautic has developed a serial hybrid marine propulsion system that significantly reduces fossil fuel usage and carbon pollution. The system uses permanent magnet brushless electric motors that can convert up to 95% of available energy with no emissions except a small amount of heat. Battery banks store power for propulsion and other loads, and are recharged intermittently and efficiently by variable speed generators or shore power. This limits generator run time to only when needed, reducing emissions and energy loss. The hybrid system allows vessels to operate emission-free in harbors and while docked. Regen addresses the power needs of larger vessels by combining multiple smaller electric motors.
Ecopost
EcoPost is a company located in Kenya that manufactures plastic lumber from recycled plastic waste and sawdust. It employs people in marginalized areas to collect, sort, and provide plastic waste for manufacturing. EcoPost has created over 500 jobs, recycled over 2 million kilograms of waste, manufactured over 30,000 building profiles to provide housing while saving forests. Their products provide a sustainable alternative to timber for construction in impoverished areas of Africa.
Rapid Sensor Data Modeling
Iterati Technologies proposes using artificial intelligence to model sensor data streams from oceanographic buoys. Their system would automatically highlight potentially problematic measurements or areas of interest, speeding up research. It aims to continuously refine models while correcting individual sensor biases. By rapidly modeling large amounts of sensor data and detecting anomalies, the system could also enable short-term prediction, systematic sensor correction, and merging of disparate data sources into single predictions.

Green Box has developed technologies to process food contaminated post-consumer waste from fast food and other waste streams. This transforms the waste into high quality tissue pulps, paper cups containing up to 40% post-consumer waste approved by the FDA, tissue products, diesel fuel, biochar, and fuel pellets. The process has zero waste water discharge or landfill waste, and fully reclaims and sustains the waste streams.

The Green Box waste reclamation facilities can fully recover various waste streams currently sent to landfills through a process that has primarily water vapor air emissions and no effluent or landfill requirements. The process transforms food contaminated post-consumer waste into products like tissue paper, paper cups containing up to 40% post-consumer waste approved by the FDA, diesel fuel, biochar fertilizer, and fuel pellets. It achieves 100% organic solid waste reclamation and sustainability with zero waste to landfills or waste water discharge.
Crude Oil Desulferization
Genoil has developed a hydroconversion upgrading technology that removes impurities like sulfur, nitrogen, and metals from crude oil and refinery residues through a process that adds hydrogen. This technology reduces the carbon ratio in crude oil, making it a carbon reduction process. It can upgrade all types of heavy oil reserves globally. By removing these impurities which become greenhouse gases when burned, the technology tackles the challenge of meeting energy needs while reducing environmental impacts from oil consumption.
Open ROV
OpenROV is an open-source underwater robot and growing community of over 3,000 DIY ocean explorers that began in a garage. The community develops low-cost designs and new sensors to improve the robot and build a network of operators. It aims to democratize exploration by relying on community feedback to improve the crowdsourced design. Assembly takes a weekend and doesn't require expertise, just basic skills like soldering. Users can then explore oceans and share adventures with their OpenROV.

Off-grid electrification for development of small islands represents a number of unique challenges under the broad category of rural electrification. Small, off-grid island communities are particularly vulnerable to diesel price fluctuations and natural disasters, and thus, enhancing resilience through more sustainable and cheaper energy technologies should be a key priority. Financing the transition to these technologies – usually photovoltaic, micro-hydro or sometimes wind – is an essential hurdle to overcome. Once electricity systems are in place it is equally important that they are sustained in the longer term with effective arrangements for operation and maintenance, cost recovery etc. Related to this, is the productive use of the energy provided to increase islander incomes.
The workshop on Bunaken Island, Sulawesi, Indonesia from 3 to 5 November 2015, organised by the Smart Villages Initiative in collaboration with Kopernik, will explore these issues and develop recommendations for policy makers, development agencies and other stakeholders in energy provision to island communities.

PrecisionHawk creates an end-to-end aerial data collection system utilizing artificial intelligence to operate an unmanned aerial vehicle and sensors. Their small, hand-launched drone can collect high resolution imagery and data autonomously for applications such as land surveying, agriculture, and security. Through AI, PrecisionHawk is able to automate data collection, processing, and analysis to provide on-demand business intelligence for customers.
Bio Toilets

Their skimmers can be used for oil spills, harvesting plants and plastics, providing cost savings. The goal is to make effective cleanup tools simple and affordable worldwide. Unlike motorized skimmers, it uses water flow to push debris down and let it rise, separating debris from water without extra equipment.
Accelerated Sedimentation

This gasification technology is also uniquely scalable, able to process from 5 to 30,000 tons of waste per day in a single unit.

AOM provides real-time monitoring of on-board systems and personnel safety for vessels through an easy-to-use web interface. This solution helps improve safety, maintenance, and compliance for tug boats, shipping companies, and oil rigs. The technology transmits data from vessels anywhere in the world via cellular or satellite networks. AOM also offers an innovative personnel tracking system that allows 24/7 monitoring of crew locations up to 10 times per second, improving emergency response times.
Superhydrophobic Nanofiber
Researchers at the University of Akron have developed superhydrophobic nanofiber tubes for separating oil from water. The nanofiber mats are fabricated into flat sheets and cylindrical geometries using electrospinning. Due to their small fiber and pore size and composition, the mat surfaces are super hydrophobic and attract oil but not water. Experimental results showed the cylindrical nanofiber filters achieved up to 98% separation efficiency of water droplets in diesel fuel, outperforming flat sheet filters. The tubular design allows for more compact separators with potential for practical application.
Tersi Technologies
Tersi Technologies has developed a field-validated process for remediating hydrocarbons that is faster and more cost-effective than other solutions. Their product, HCS-200, activates the existing bacteria naturally present in the environment to break down hydrocarbons within 24-48 hours, without adding additional engineered microbes. It works by breaking hydrocarbon masses into inert microscopic spheres upon contact, which then form a stable suspended solution that is harmless when dumped or spread. This eliminates costly disposal processes. HCS-200 can be used to remediate a wide range of industrial sites and spills.
Wind Float: The Depth Independent Offshore Wind Solution
WindFloat is a floating support structure for offshore wind turbines that offers several advantages over traditional bottom-fixed installations. It allows for installation in deep waters between 40-100 meters as well as waters over 100 meters deep. This provides access to stronger and more consistent winds farther from shore. The design also enables onshore assembly and shallow draft for easy transport and installation. WindFloat uses established semi-submersible platform technology from offshore oil and gas and provides static and dynamic stability for commercial wind turbines.
Deep Green: Tidal and Ocean Current Energy
Minesto's Deep Green technology is the only known technology that can economically generate power from tidal and ocean currents with low velocities of 1.2-2.5m/s, unlocking previously inaccessible renewable energy resources. Deep Green resembles an underwater kite with a wing and turbine secured to the seabed with a tether, reaching speeds 10 times higher than ocean currents through an figure-8 path. This design offers high efficiency, small size, low-cost offshore operations accessible for longer periods, and ultimately a low cost of energy compared to other tidal technologies only designed for higher speeds above 2.4 m/s over more limited areas that are also more difficult to operate in.
Compliance Monitoring of Sulfur Emissions from Shipping
Ships emit large quantities of air pollutants and new regulations require lower sulfur fuel content and NOx abatement techniques to reduce emissions and their negative environmental impacts. However, complying with the new rules will significantly increase ship transport costs, providing an economic incentive for non-compliance. Currently, fuel usage is monitored through random checks and occasional sampling, but there is no way to monitor fuel usage at sea. Johan Mellqvist has developed a system over 8 years that combines custom software and an optical system to automatically monitor compliance through on-ship installation and remote detection from aircraft, ships, and fixed sites near shipping lanes.

Intralytix is developing bacteriophage-based products that use viruses to target and kill specific bacteria. These natural products provide environmentally friendly alternatives to antibiotics and chemicals for applications in food safety, environmental cleanup, healthcare, and more. Bacteriophages only kill their targeted bacteria and do not harm other species, making them a precise and sustainable tool for controlling diseases and maintaining microbial balance. Bacteriophages only kill their targeted bacteria and do not harm other species, making them a precise and sustainable tool for controlling diseases and maintaining microbial balance. Intralytix is working to commercialize these phage-based products to improve food safety, reduce antibiotic resistance, and promote human and environmental health in a green way.

Water contamination is one of the major causes of water borne diseases worldwide. In Kenya, approximately 43% of people lack access to potable water due to human contamination. River Kuywa water is currently experiencing contamination due to human activities. Its water is widely used for domestic, agricultural, industrial and recreational purposes. This study aimed at characterizing bacteria and fungi in river Kuywa water. Water samples were randomly collected from four sites of the river: site A (Matisi), site B (Ngwelo), site C (Nzoia water pump) and site D (Chalicha), during the dry season (January-March 2018) and wet season (April-July 2018) and were transported to Maseno University Microbiology and plant pathology laboratory for analysis. The characterization and identification of bacteria and fungi were carried out using standard microbiological techniques. Nine bacterial genera and three fungi were identified from Kuywa river water. Clostridium spp., Staphylococcus spp., Enterobacter spp., Streptococcus spp., E. coli, Klebsiella spp., Shigella spp., Proteus spp. and Salmonella spp. Fungi were Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus flavus complex and Penicillium species. Wet season recorded highest bacterial and fungal counts (6.61-7.66 and 3.83-6.75cfu/ml) respectively. The results indicated that the river Kuywa water is polluted and therefore unsafe for human consumption before treatment. It is therefore recommended that the communities to ensure that they boil water especially for drinking.

Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.

The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.
