OPENROV
Democratized Exploration with Open Source
Robotic and Community
OpenROV is an open-source underwater robot. It's also a
growing community (now over 3,000 strong) of DIY ocean
explorers. The project began in a garage in Cupertino, CA,
and quickly spread after raising over $100k on Kickstarter from
supporters all over the world. The community of developers
are continuously improving the low-cost design, developing
new sensors, and building a distributed network of ROV
operators to work the devices. It's democratized exploration.
OPENROV
OpenROV is not only open source, they are also
crowdsourced, which means they rely on feedback from the
community for ideas on how they can make the design better,
places to go with the ROV, or information and ides that
would benefit people interested in underwater exploration.
Assembly of OpenROV can
be done over a weekend, and
most sections take less then
an hour. Building the
OpenROV doesn't require
being a robotics expert or
having a degree in
engineering, but it helps to
have a little bit of experience
with soldering, cutting, gluing,
etc. The kit is a high school-
level building experience (but
the team is always amazed at
how capable very young
people are at figuring this kind
of stuff out).

Once you've built an OpenROV, there are a ton of places out
there to explore and members of the community share their
stories of underwater adventures done with their Open ROV.
