In the last 15 months, Fab laid off 565 employees,
dropping from 750 to 185 employees. Selling
products online is a “hard business to be in,”
Goldberg said.
At its worst point, Fab was burning through $14
million a month, Goldberg revealed, and was forced
to layoff hundreds of people. “It was an excruciating
year,” Goldberg said.

Editor's Notes

  1. End with…. “So what does my story have to do with you? How does this apply to an SMB online retailer?”
  2. The first way to build a niche, is to literally source your own product that no one else has.
  3. $10 million dollar + and growing online based retailer, 95%+ of all his product sales are of his own product lines
  4. Jewelry Designer, sells through a “channel” of jewelry shops, along with direct to retail online. Started out 7 years ago, should pass the $1 million mark in 2015
  5. 2 Man business (owner and 1 admin/logistics guy), just under $1 million in annual sales (huge margins).
  6. Not everyone needs to source their own wholly unique product line, others just need a niche they can control. Went to Walgreens, CVS, etc… after a car accident left him with walking problems (temporarily) and they only sold 5 different canes and all the drugstores sold the same 5 canes Was clearly a niche that could be “blinged out” (not unlike John’s niche in the Shoe Lace business)
  7. Identified a highly sought after product and negotiated an exclusive territory
  8. Sells Paper Products, right from the manufacturer (and competes with them and wins)
  9. Even this outdated look and feel, sells approximately $1 million annually because they chose a defensible niche.
  10. Became the GO TO expert for replacing your broken iPhone Screen. More than 35 million views on YouTube
  11. Created a loyal brand following by sponsoring up and coming riders in the space and building a community around the brand (and at events)
  12. A regional “BevMo” type company, that infuses a passion and personality into a product line that has a cult following (mostly Wine)
  13. These are all fads, I was heavily pitched on. I was basically told my business would fail, if I didn’t turn Miva to focus on these.
  14. How many of you are familiar with this site?
  15. He blames e-commerce, but that’s not the problem
  16. His business model was the problem
  17. How many of you are familiar with this site?
  18. Similar to Fab.com, blames ecommerce for being “hard”, the truth is the core business model was (thus far) flawed
  19. Well designed site, great name, no business
  20. What can you do to stand apart from everyone else? Other than don’t chase fads.
