Phil Driver: Inspiring Climate Action
Public sector infrastructure and services generally do not have a major impact on mitigating or adapting to climate change or sustainability (exceptions exist).
A cycleway or a public bus service does not mitigate or adapt to climate change, in fact their construction often accelerates climate change. It is us riding our bikes on the cycleway or using the bus service instead of using our cars that mitigates climate change. A cycleway being used for recreational purposes is not contributing to climate mitigation unless the riders would otherwise be using their cars for recreation.
This presentation will use ‘PRUB-Logic’ to demonstrate that any actions project managers take to address climate change and sustainability must not just enable and empower users but also inspire us and our communities to change our behaviours. This means that project managers need to consider how the results of their projects will better inspire changed user behaviours.

Business has a key role to play in sustainability according to the presentation. The traditional business model focuses on profits and growth, which can be at odds with environmental sustainability due to finite resources. However, corporations have the resources and global reach to make progress on sustainability. Ecopreneurs are entrepreneurs that use business to drive environmental and social change through sustainable business models. Examples highlighted are Interface Carpet and TerraCycle, which are driven by values, close resource loops, and add social benefits. The challenges for business include finite natural resources, the paradox of growth and consumerism, issues of scale in New Zealand, and achieving full sustainability. An alternative business model presented is one that has an overall positive impact on the environment and society.

Nature Inspired Design swisstainability
Nature Inspired Design is about designing products that make a positive impact on society and the environment, instead of products with a reduced negative impact, as is the case with traditional ecodesign. The idea is to emulate strategies used by living systems into technologies that are economically and ecologically successful. Two design strategies exist that have this goal: Cradle to Cradle and Biomimicry. Both receive much enthusiasm and sometimes even seem to be a hype.
But are the resulting designs truly sustainable? How is Nature Inspired Design different from business-as-usual? And how can you apply NID in your daily design practice, and with which method? These are the main questions in the project Nature Inspired Design Method, a research project financed by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.
Running from 2012-2015 with a consortium of ten companies, a novel design method will be developed and tested that lets designers integrate Cradle to Cradle and Biomimicry in their daily design practice. Each of the companies counts as a leader in its field, with a proven track record on at least one of the two strategies, bringing in valuable insights and experience. The project results will be materialized in an easy-to-use handbook. It will combine the best practices of the ten companies, complemented with state-of-the-art design research and insights in the principles of sustainable living systems. These results will be presented at a symposium in Delft, The Netherlands on the 6th of November 2014.

The ATA Tailings Treatment Technology developed by Soane Mining can rapidly consolidate tailings streams into solid waste using a three part process. The process uses an Activator polymer to aggregate fine particles, Anchor particles coated with a Tether polymer to bind the aggregates, and produces clean water that can be recycled along with dewatered solids suitable for reclamation. This specialized polymer technology eliminates tailings impoundments while recovering water and treating existing impoundment areas to mitigate environmental liability.
Precision Hawk
PrecisionHawk creates an end-to-end aerial data collection system utilizing artificial intelligence to operate an unmanned aerial vehicle and sensors. Their small, hand-launched drone can collect high resolution imagery and data autonomously for applications such as land surveying, agriculture, and security. Through AI, PrecisionHawk is able to automate data collection, processing, and analysis to provide on-demand business intelligence for customers.
Bio Toilets

The modification of an existing product or the formulation of a new product to fill a newly identified market niche or customer need are both examples of product development. This study generally developed and conducted the formulation of aramang baked products enriched with malunggay conducted by the researchers. Specifically, it answered the acceptability level in terms of taste, texture, flavor, odor, and color also the overall acceptability of enriched aramang baked products. The study used the frequency distribution for evaluators to determine the acceptability of enriched aramang baked products enriched with malunggay. As per sensory evaluation conducted by the researchers, it was proven that aramang baked products enriched with malunggay was acceptable in terms of Odor, Taste, Flavor, Color, and Texture. Based on the results of sensory evaluation of enriched aramang baked products proven that three (3) treatments were all highly acceptable in terms of variable Odor, Taste, Flavor, Color and Textures conducted by the researchers.

The webinar provided an overview of the new OECD (Q)SAR Assessment Framework for evaluating the scientific validity of (Q)SAR models, predictions, and results from multiple predictions. The QAF provides assessment elements for existing principles for evaluating models, as well as new principles for evaluating predictions and results. In addition to the principles, assessment elements, and guidance for evaluating each element, the QAF includes a checklist for reporting assessments.
This new Framework provides regulators with a consistent and transparent approach for reviewing the use of (Q)SAR predictions in a regulatory context and increases the confidence to accept alternative methods for evaluating chemical hazards. The OECD worked closely together with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italy) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), supported by a variety of international experts to develop a checklist of criteria and guidance for evaluating each criterion. The aim of the QAF is to help establish confidence in the use of (Q)SARs in evaluating chemical safety, and was designed to be applicable irrespective of the modelling technique used to build the model, the predicted endpoint, and the intended regulatory purpose.
The webinar provided an overview of the project and presented the main aspects of the framework for assessing models and results based on individual or multiple predictions.
