Standing up for your Point of
           View
The goal for any critical thinker
should be to deal with, handle, and
     effectively resolve conflict.
Types of Conflict
• Simple Conflict

These types of conflicts are usually over social, political or economic nature. Such as the conflicts
that lead many people nowadays to divorce. Many time they are something simple or something
small that if they were talked out could easily be resolved to both parties.
Types of Conflict
• Pseudo Conflict

This type of conflict is usually when communication breaks down. When one of
the parties of the argument misinterprets what is being said, they don’t hear
them correctly, or they are ignoring what the other party is trying to say. These
can usually lead to huge misunderstanding by both sides. Sometimes the initial
argument was not even an argument until someone thought that a person was
trying to attack or offend them. This is one of the reasons why in Critical thinking
it is important to always be clear on what you are trying to discuss.
Types of Conflict
• Ego Conflict

• This usually occurs when the two parties have a large personality difference
and can’t work together to figure out the problem. Usually someone is very
attached to their beliefs and refuse to change their ideas because of their ego
and they think it would change them to change their ideas.
Relationship Argumentation
• Unresolved Issues

• Unresolved Issues are something from that persons past that
• Is used to punish the other person or can make the other person
• Over react because of something in their past like a husband
• Becoming over angry
Relationship Argumentation
• Sensitive Issues

• Something like a forgotten birthday or something bigger like a affair can
come back to haunt you because a person may bring up a sensitive issue
to try to win or take a argument of topic just by making the other party
  angry.
Relationship Argumentation
• Fighting For Your Deeper Needs

• Using something superficial to fight about something deeper or more serious without
actually talking about what the real problem is. Sometimes taking away something from the
other party or making a huge issue out of something small because the real reason for
wanting to fight it something much bigger and more important, but you do not actual want
to deal with that issue. Many times seen as “Making mountains out of molehills.”
Relationship Argumentation
• Hidden Payoffs

• These types of arguments are usually about a underlying issue. But
can also be because one of the two parties likes to argue because
they feel like it is the only time that they can really feel in touch
with the other person and in some ways feel good when fighting.
Relationship Argumentation
• Failure to Stick to the Issues

• In arguments you need to stick to the actual issue and not lead it to personal
attacks on someone because that can only escalate the issue. The problem is in
most relationships people in arguments like to bring up other problems or
something that is off topic just to be able to feel like they have the upper hand
even though it no longer pertains to the argument at hand.
Standing up for your Point of View
• It is important in life to stand up for your point of view, but
you also need to be able to see someone else’s point of view
and be able to consider it might also be a valid opinion. By not
doing this you are no longer using Critical Thinking.
