This document outlines the stages of the product approach to writing instruction: 1) Familiarization - Students read model texts and analyze features of the genre. 2) Controlled writing - Students practice highlighted genre features in isolation. 3) Guided writing - Students organize their own ideas with a focus on structure. 4) Free writing - Students independently apply their skills to comparable writing tasks. The product approach encourages students to imitate writing models in order to master genres.

2. Product approach can be defined as a traditional
approach, in which students are encouraged to mimic a
model text, which is usually presented and analyzed at
an early stage.

This approach encourages students to imitate a writing
model supplied by the teacher.

4. Model texts are read, and then features of the genre are
highlighted.
STAGE 1: FAMILIARIZATION
For example, if studying a formal letter, students'
attention may be drawn to the importance of
paragraphing and the language used to make formal
requests.
If studying a story, the focus may be on the techniques
used to make the story interesting, and students focus on
where and how the writer employs these techniques.

5. STAGE 2: CONTROLLED
WRITING
This consists of controlled practice of the highlighted
features, usually in isolation.
So if students are studying a formal letter, they may be
asked to practise the language used to make formal
requests, practicing the 'I would be grateful if you
would…' structure.

6. STAGE 3: GUIDED WRITING
This stage focuses one of the most crucial parts of
writing an essay where it focuses on organizing ideas.
Those who favour this approach believe that the
organisation of ideas is more important than the ideas
themselves and as important as the control of language.

7. STAGE 4: FREE WRITING
The end result of the learning process. Students choose
from a choice of comparable writing tasks.
Individually, they use the skills, structures and
vocabulary they have been taught to produce the
product; to show what they can do as fluent and
competent users of the language.
