THE STAGES OF
PRODUCT APPROACH
 A traditional approach which students are encouraged to
mimic a model text, which is usually presented and analyzed
at an early stage
 Focuses on writing tasks in which the learner imitates, copies
and transforms teacher supplied models and steps involved in
creating a piece of work
WHAT IS PRODUCT APPROACH?
 Model texts are read, then features of genre are highlighted.
 For example, if studying formal letter, students’ attention may
be drawn to the importance of paraphrasing and the language
used to make formal requests.
 If studying a story, the focus may be on the techniques used
to make the story interesting and students focus on where
and how the writer employs these techniques.
STAGE 1: FAMILIARIZATION
 Controlled practice of the highlighted features, usually in
isolation.
 If the students are studying formal letter, they may be asked
to practice the language used
STAGE 2: CONTROLLED WRITING
 It is the organization of ideas.
 Organization of ideas is more important than the ideas
themselves and also as important as the control of language.
STAGE 3: GUIDED WRITING
 End result of learning process.
 Students choose from a choice of comparable writing tasks.
Use skills, structures and vocabulary to show the competency
and fluency.
STAGE 4: FREE WRITING
