1. FORWARD
This Staff Development Plan has been devised to assist Pathway Group in delivering
the aims and objectives set out in the Pathway Group Business Development Plan
2014-2017.
Our training and development strategy also ensures that we are meeting our legal
obligations in key areas including health and safety, safeguarding children and
vulnerable adults and equality and diversity.
It sets out our commitment to new Pathway Group employees through our
induction programmes as well as how we will deliver our intent to meet company
needs with staff development that will help us to deliver organisational success. As
well as equipping individuals to achieve personal success and fulfil their ambitions.
We encourage all those in the organisation with management responsibilities
to enable and encourage their teams to take full advantage of the development
opportunities set out in this plan.

2. WHAT’S IN THE PLAN?
This plan is intended for all staff and gives general information about Pathway Group’s
range of staff development opportunities including where employees can access
Matrix Standard information, advice and guidance. It provides a directory of in-house
training activities available during 2014-2015, which give opportunities to pursue
staff development through a wide variety of learning methods including e-learning,
workshops, seminars, longer term programmes of study, networking, standardisation
meetings and coaching.
A key feature in our staff development programme during 2014- 2015 will be the
expansion of e-learning opportunities.
Why get involved in staff development?
Staff development activities play a major role in delivering Pathway Group’s
commitment to continuous quality improvement and the expansion of our services,
as well as addressing individual employees’ professional development needs and
supporting staff in achieving their career aspirations.

We welcome questions and feedback.Your identification of additional training needs
and any gaps would be a valuable contribution to our on-going training needs
analysis process. In particular, we see the plan as supporting and reflecting Pathway
Group’s commitment to delivering our equality and diversity policies, so please let us

3. INDUCTION OF NEW STAFF
Allnewstaff,includingparttimeemployees,aregiveninductiontrainingwhichfocuses
on job role priorities; Pathway Group policies, aims and objectives, introduction to
the Pathway Group team and explanation about roles and responsibilities.
Induction programmes will be customised to meet the individual requirements of
specific roles and, in addition new employees are also required to attend within their
first year, a number of sessions covering generic company issues including:

Health and Safety Induction
Government legislation makes it the duty of employers to ensure, so far as it is
reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of all employees, visitors and
service users.The legislation also imposes basic duties on employees, to act with
reasonable care regarding the health and safety of themselves, other employees
and the general public and to co-operate with their employer and others to see that
statutory provisions are observed.
All new staff members are required to attend this Introduction to Health and Safety
training within their induction period and all existing staff should attend this session
at least once a year. This is a key part of the process of keeping everyone up to date
regarding Pathway Group’s Health and Safety Policy.
Fire Emergency Procedures
This course is designed to give employees an understanding of what to do in the
event of a fire. All new employees must attend this session within their induction
training.
The core purpose of the training is concerned with actions to take on discovering a
fire:
• How to raise the alarm
• What to do when hearing a fire alarm
• Who’s responsible for calling the emergency services
• Location of extinguishers and escape routes
• Dealing with disabled persons and evacuation procedures
• Who will be responsible for the commission of any further investigation
Safeguarding
All new staff members should attend a session and conduct safeguarding training
assessment. Employment in the Company and existing staff should attend regular
updates as signposted. Staff should also complete the online safeguarding course,
to gain more understanding about recognising signs that there may be safeguarding
issues affecting learners and how to respond including reporting procedures. These
mattersarealsocoveredinPathwayGroup’sSafeguardingPolicyinrespectofchildren,
young people and vulnerable adults and Pathway Group’s Health and Safety Policy.

• Understanding causes and triggers and patterns leading to violent behaviour

• First aid training
• RIDDOR including assessment procedure requirements
• Display Screen Equipment (DSE) safe use
• Personal protective equipment and clothing
• Hazardous substances/chemical safety – COSHH
• Welfare facilities
• Electrical safety policy and procedures
• Occupational health referral
* First Aid Certificate Course
Pathway Group needs to maintain the requisite number of qualified First Aiders in
our various teams/ locations and opportunities for training to become a First Aider
will arise.
Our First Aid Trainers are competent and qualified to deliver the certificate course
which is considered the “Gold Standard” in First Aid education in the UK. It qualifies
the holder to act as a statutory First Aider in the workplace, subject to appointment
by their employer. The course is a blend of theory integrated with the principles and
practice of First Aid.
What you can expect to learn:
• Resuscitation and care of an unconscious casualty
• Treatment and control of bleeding and shock
• Legal considerations of first aid in the workplace
• Transportation of casualties
• Recognition of illness and poisoning and eye irrigation procedure
• Treatment to bones, muscles and joints
• Personal hygiene in treating wounds
• Communication and delegation in an emergency
• Appropriate and sufficient case record keeping

Equality and Diversity Awareness Training
The principles of equality and fairness underpin everything we do in our company.
Whatever our roles, we need to be able to work effectively within the context of the
diversity of our colleagues and learners.
It is essential to maintaining our ethos that we respect and value this diversity–
whether in the context of background, disability, race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion
or sexuality.
We should be sensitive to, and respect other people’s needs and feelings. We all have
a responsibility for ensuring fair and equal practice. Training is offered to support
personal development in these areas.
The company has set out its policy and procedures in these matters in the Pathway
Group Equality and Diversity Policy document which is accessible on the company
web site.
All new staff members are required to attend an awareness training session within the
first six months of joining the company and existing staff should attend the session at
least once a year.
Topics include:
• Principles of equality and diversity and best practice
• Overview of the company’s response to legislation
• Understanding the company’s Equality and Diversity Policy
• Your rights and responsibilities
• Value of the policy to the employer and employee

4. INFORMATION,COMMUNICATIONTECHNOLOGY(ICT)INDUCTION
All new and existing staff will need to attend this training in order to be able to input
and access training relating to:
• Online Courses/E-learning
• Database usage training
• IT Policies and Procedures
• IT/Communication/Technology updates
You can expect to learn:
• How to access and use emails
• How to access company policies and procedures
• How to access company announcements and to improve IT communication skills
• How to access learners’documentation
• How to keep up with changes within the organisation
• How to use the Pathway Group electronic diary
All new and existing staff will be encouraged to access training via Online courses/E-
learning which meets their particular interests or develop new skills.
You can expect to learn:
• How to use IT to develop both existing skills new skills/interests
5. FUNCTIONAL SKILLS TRAINING
Functional Skills
Functional Skills are qualifications in English, Maths and ICT that equip learners with
the basic practical skills required in everyday life, education and the workplace. They
are available at Entry Level 1 through to Level 2.
Pathway Group will encourage and enable employees, where appropriate to their
individual needs and work requirements to further develop their professional skills.
Employees should in the first instance, discuss their individual needs with their Line
Manager.

We offer a generic course which is valuable to both new and experienced Managers
who wish to gain or refine their management skills and at the same time reinforce
the commitment and increase the productivity of their teams. This course may also
be suitable for employees wishing to gain management skills.The course includes
modules covering: management and supervision, appraisal, leadership skills,
