Sri Aurobindo
philosophy on
Teaching
Three principles of Teaching
1.The first principle is that nothing can be taught.
2.The second principle is that the mind should be
constantly consulted in its growth.
3.The third principle is to work from the near to far,
from that which is to that which shall be
METHODS OF TEACHING
The following principles of methods of teaching have
been stressed by Sri. Aurobindo.
1. Love and sympathy for the child.
2. Education through mother tongue.
3. Education according to the interests of the child
4. Education through self experience
5. Emphasis on learning by doing
6. Education through co-operation of teacher and students in
the education process.
7. Education according to the nature of child- considering
the divinity in the child and latent gifts of mind and spirit
8. Freedom of child- free environment to gain more
knowledge through his own efforts.
He favours some teaching methods are as follows;
Teaching
methods
Integral
Teaching
ObservationPractical
Experience
Successive
Teaching
Successive Teaching
Sri Aurobindo favors successive teaching as against simultaneous introduction
of so many subjects in early education.
The basic subject should introduce first so that a sound foundation for
education is made.
As Aruobindo points out, “the old system was to teach one or two subjects
well and thoroughly and then proceed to others and certainly it was a
more rational system than the modern. If it did not impart so much
varied information, it built up a deeper, nobler and more real culture”.
Thus different subjects should be studied one by one.
The same principle is applicable to the teaching of textbooks. Each chapter
should be studied thoroughly and in succession.
Education Through Practical Experience
Sri Aurobindo pleads for introduction of different subjects to
the through practical experience.
He gives valuable suggestions for the teaching of different
subjects appealing to the
1.Imagination
2.Dramatic faculty
3.Love for the narrative
4.Hero worship
5.urge to enquiry and other natural characteristics of the
child.
Integral teaching
It involves training of all aspects of the student mind and personality.
Starting with the sense training it develops;
1.Memory & Judgement
2.Observation & comparison
3.Analogy
4.Reasoning characteristic are
5.Imagination present in every
6.Ianguage child “
7.Grammar & meaning of the logical faculty etc.
In other words of Aurobindo, “ Every child is an inquirer, an investigator,
analyzer, a merciless anatomist”.
Things which to do;
• Arouse the curiosity
• Imagination
• Natural interest of the child.
So that he may spontaneously enquire understand and learn.
 Observation
 Sense training starts with observation.
 The child has a natural urge to observe the nature around.
 Example: Flower, leafs – teaching of botany.
 Acc. To him “The observation and comparison of
flowers, leaves, plants tress will lay the foundations of
botanical knowledge without loading the mind with
names and that dry set acquisition of information
which is the beginning of cramming and detested by
the healthy human mind when it is fresh from nature
and unspoiled by unnatural habits ”.
 Earth- Geology
 Animals- Zoology
 Stars, plants- Astronomy.
