• - The one who can put the students at ease and who have a sense of humour .
- The one who is loved and respected by his Students.
- He is more “ teacher-like “ in the classroom than himself .
• In the next page I will share with you the main charecteristics of an ideal teacher to have
an overview of this profession .
What makes you
an ideal EFL teacher ?
There are Four main charechteristics of
an ideal english teacher:
• Being well prepared
• The quality of sound
• The choice of activities
• enhancing learnning desire
• Being smart !
being well prepared :
• Good teacher of English are also good students of their subject . They are
the ones who definitely need to have a methodical approach, which usually
includes taking the time to do his research and preparation before he enters
the classroom . So , in a way , it is not always about personality . Effective
teachers are the ones who are aware of what could disturb the course .
Having a thought in advance about about what could happen in the
classroom is most important charesteristic of an ideal teacher . They need to
know what equipment is available in their school and find a way to use it in
favor of teaching . All this is a Part of teachers knowledge they have of their
subject and the skill of teaching .
Quality of sounds :
• It is very important for teachers to vary the quality of their voices - and
the volume they speak at - according to the type of lesson and the type
of activity . The kind of voice we use to give instructions or introduce
a new activity will be different from the voice which is most
appropriate for conversation or an informal exchange of views or
information. just like opera singers , teachers have to take great care
of their voices . It is of great important that they breathe correctly !
the choice of activities:
• Good teachers vary activities and topics over a period of time , The
best activity type will be less motivating the sixth time we ask the
students to take part in it than it was when they first came across it .
You have to remember that the value of an activity resides in its
freshness , so be careful ! . Beside that , It is well-known knowledge
that Children usually respond well to activities that focus on their lives
, experiences and interests !
enhancing a
learning desire
• There a variety of factors can create a desire to learn . Perhaps the learners love the
subject they have chosen , or maybe they are simply interested in seeing what it is
like . Perhaps, as with young children , they just happen to be curious about
everything, including learning . Another factor is ’’ knowing learners names ’’ wich
is also about knowing students . At any age, they will be pleased when they realise
that their teacher has remembered things about them , and has some understanding
of who they are . This will make them automatically following your instructions .
Once again, this is extremely difficult in large classes , especially when we have a big
number of different groups . ‘’ like the case of Algerian middle schools where the
number of pupils exceed the 40 ! ‘’ . However , it is one of the teachers skills to
persuade students that we recognise all of them .
Being smart !
• Or being well self-educated is also one of the necessary charesteristics
. Remember that humans are nothing more than a complex system of
neurons ! Of course , and humans are victim of this neurons , a good
example to simplify this is your Indian neighbour who says ‘Namaste!
’ every time he sees you . Pretty soon and without making a research to
know the meaning of this word , you understand that this means ‘
Hello! ’
• If you hear the same words in the same context enough, you start to work
out what they mean . And if you use this word for a long periods , pupils
will automatically memorize the words .
Let this psychological fact or mental trick be one of your teaching arms
‘’ what is repeated is accepted ‘’
• The way that teachers talk to students - the manner in which they
interact with them . Their moves , jokes and gifts , seating
arrangement while having a group work are all what teachers have to
improve in order to become an ideal teachers .
Teaching is not an easy job , but a noble profession that can be very
rewarding when we see our students’ progress and know that we have
helped to make it happen.

  • 4. being well prepared : • Good teacher of English are also good students of their subject . They are the ones who definitely need to have a methodical approach, which usually includes taking the time to do his research and preparation before he enters the classroom . So , in a way , it is not always about personality . Effective teachers are the ones who are aware of what could disturb the course . Having a thought in advance about about what could happen in the classroom is most important charesteristic of an ideal teacher . They need to know what equipment is available in their school and find a way to use it in favor of teaching . All this is a Part of teachers knowledge they have of their subject and the skill of teaching .
  • 5. Quality of sounds : • It is very important for teachers to vary the quality of their voices - and the volume they speak at - according to the type of lesson and the type of activity . The kind of voice we use to give instructions or introduce a new activity will be different from the voice which is most appropriate for conversation or an informal exchange of views or information. just like opera singers , teachers have to take great care of their voices . It is of great important that they breathe correctly !
  • 6. the choice of activities: • Good teachers vary activities and topics over a period of time , The best activity type will be less motivating the sixth time we ask the students to take part in it than it was when they first came across it . You have to remember that the value of an activity resides in its freshness , so be careful ! . Beside that , It is well-known knowledge that Children usually respond well to activities that focus on their lives , experiences and interests !
  • 7. enhancing a learning desire • There a variety of factors can create a desire to learn . Perhaps the learners love the subject they have chosen , or maybe they are simply interested in seeing what it is like . Perhaps, as with young children , they just happen to be curious about everything, including learning . Another factor is ’’ knowing learners names ’’ wich is also about knowing students . At any age, they will be pleased when they realise that their teacher has remembered things about them , and has some understanding of who they are . This will make them automatically following your instructions . Once again, this is extremely difficult in large classes , especially when we have a big number of different groups . ‘’ like the case of Algerian middle schools where the number of pupils exceed the 40 ! ‘’ . However , it is one of the teachers skills to persuade students that we recognise all of them .
  • 8. Being smart ! • Or being well self-educated is also one of the necessary charesteristics . Remember that humans are nothing more than a complex system of neurons ! Of course , and humans are victim of this neurons , a good example to simplify this is your Indian neighbour who says ‘Namaste! ’ every time he sees you . Pretty soon and without making a research to know the meaning of this word , you understand that this means ‘ Hello! ’

Their moves , jokes and gifts , seating arrangement while having a group work are all what teachers have to improve in order to become an ideal teachers . Teaching is not an easy job , but a noble profession that can be very rewarding when we see our students’ progress and know that we have helped to make it happen.
