This document discusses an innovative funding model for producing biochar using TLUD gasifier stoves in developing societies. The model involves providing TLUD stoves to households who agree to use the stoves with their own fuel and pay a small rental fee, as well as produce and provide half a kilogram of charcoal per day made in the stove. The value of the charcoal production is key to the success and sustainability of the model by addressing obstacles to stove adoption like upfront costs and questions of longevity. Initial projects in Uganda involving around two dozen stoves showed over 50% acceptance by users and worked to define procedures for tracking charcoal collection and ensuring it is permanently removed from being combusted.
