The document discusses the development of the concept of "nomen" in RDA and its related standards. It traces how nomen originated in earlier models like FRBR, FRAD, and FRSAD as a way to designate entities and was consolidated in LRM. LRM defines nomen as an association between an entity and its designation, with attributes like category, language, and script. This lays the conceptual groundwork for nomen in RDA, where it is defined as a designation that refers to an RDA entity.

Mapping Hierarchical Sources into RDF using the RML Mapping Languageandimou
Incorporating structured data in the Linked Data cloud is still complicated, despite the numerous existing tools. In particular, hierarchical structured data (e.g., JSON) are underrepresented, due to their processing complexity. A uniform mapping formalisation for data in different formats, which would enable reuse and exchange between tools and applied data, is missing. This paper describes a novel approach of mapping heterogeneous and hierarchical data sources into RDF using the RML mapping language, an extension over R2RML (the W3C standard for mapping relational databases into RDF). To facilitate those mappings, we present a toolset for producing RML mapping files using the Karma data modelling tool, and for consuming them using a prototype RML processor. A use case shows how RML facilitates the mapping rules’ definition and execution to map several heterogeneous sources.

The new RDA: resource description in libraries and beyond / Gordon DunsireCILIP MDG
This document discusses the new RDA (Resource Description and Access), which provides data elements, guidelines and instructions for creating metadata for library and cultural heritage resources. Key points:
- The RDA Toolkit provides user-focused elements, guidelines and instructions. The RDA Registry provides infrastructure for well-formed, linked RDA data applications.
- There are now 13 entities and over 1700 elements in RDA. Elements are now the main unit of focus and have standard structure/layout.
- Recording methods have been extended to all elements and now make the linked data method explicit. Instructions are now more optional to accommodate local practice.
- Effective description requires choosing appropriate entities and elements based on an application profile
ALA Digital Reference Publisher Troy Linker joined Amigos Library Services at "RDA @ Your Library: An Online Conference about Resource Description and Access" in early February to present "AACR2 to RDA: Using the RDA Toolkit." He offered background and tips for making a successful transition from AACR2 to RDA and how the RDA Toolkit can help
This document introduces RDA, the new metadata standard that replaces AACR2. It discusses the transition from AACR2 to RDA, highlighting some of the key differences in their theoretical frameworks and concepts. RDA is based on FRBR and FRAD conceptual models that view bibliographic data in terms of entities, attributes, and relationships. It also has new objectives and principles like a focus on user needs and representing resources as they present themselves.
This document summarizes a workshop on application profiles held on August 12, 2019. It discusses the purpose and components of application profiles, including choosing which RDA elements and instructions to include, how to document profiles, and issues around developing and managing profiles for different communities and institutions. The workshop covered drivers of choice in RDA, characteristics of application profiles, ways to specify elements and parameters in a profile, and options for documenting profiles, with the goal of helping participants understand and implement application profiles.
This document provides a summary of a presentation about the transition from AACR to RDA (Resource Description and Access).
1) AACR has served libraries well for decades but is no longer suitable for the digital world. RDA is being developed as the new cataloguing standard to address this issue and ensure catalog data is usable online.
2) RDA is based on FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) and other conceptual models which define bibliographic entities, attributes, and relationships to improve user tasks like finding and identifying resources.
3) Early implementations of RDA show benefits like more organized displays that are easier for users to navigate compared to traditional catalogs without FRBR principles
The document discusses modeling data in organizations using entity-relationship (E-R) modeling. It defines key concepts in E-R modeling including entities, attributes, relationships and how to model them. Guidelines are provided for properly naming entities and attributes, defining relationships, and representing cardinalities and time-dependent data. Metadata experts such as catalogers carefully curate resources and assign controlled vocabulary subjects to aid in information retrieval. They examine aspects of resources like titles, tables of contents, and illustrations to determine relevant subjects. Catalogers provide standardized, consistent metadata according to specific schemas. While AI can perform some metadata tasks, human catalogers are still needed to make judgment calls, provide full context, and account for variations or biases. The use of controlled vocabularies and subject headings aims to improve search precision and allow browseability through related hierarchical terms.

Chris Oliver: RDA: Designed for Current and Future EnvironmentsALATechSource
RDA is a new metadata standard that replaces AACR2 and provides guidelines for recording bibliographic data to support resource discovery. It is designed to work in current catalogues and databases, as well as take advantage of new technologies through a flexible framework aligned with FRBR and FRAD models. RDA defines discrete data elements that provide precise, machine-actionable data to describe resources and their relationships.
RDA is a new metadata standard that replaces AACR2. It aims to better support resource discovery and use of metadata in web and linked data environments. Some key changes in RDA include closer alignment with FRBR and FRAD conceptual models, a focus on recording attributes and relationships of bibliographic entities as entities, attributes, and relationships, and a consistent emphasis on the needs of users in how data is recorded.
The document discusses the development of the concept of "nomen" in RDA and its precursor models. It traces how nomen emerged in FRBR, FRAD, and FRSAD to refer to names, identifiers, and controlled access points. In LRM, nomen was defined as an association between an entity and its designation. RDA adopted nomen as a designation that refers to an RDA entity. The document outlines the descriptive elements for nomen in RDA, including category, context of use, intended audience, language, script, and others. It provides examples of using these elements in RDF triples to describe nomens.

Conclusion
180. RDA Special Topics Series: Authority Control and Creating Access Points August 5, 2019180
Access points …
• Are recorded using a structured description.
• May be taken from a vocabulary encoding scheme or
constructed using a string encoding scheme.
• Are a relationship element between RDA Entity and
Nomen.
• Values are recorded as a nomen string.

Creating Access Points
• An access point may be categorized as an authorized access
point or a variant access point.
• Authorized access points are based on the preferred name or
preferred title of the entity.
• Variant access points are based on a name or title of the entity.
• Values of other elements or designations may be included in an
access point to distinguish it from another access point, to assist
with identification, or to conform to a string encoding scheme.
• Policy statements or application profiles are required to determine
which options to apply, the order in which they should be applied,
and the punctuation to use between values.

Access Points in MARC 21
• An access point can be used to represent any RDA
entity, but an access point is not required to satisfy the
minimum description requirement in RDA.
• MARC 21 does not currently have options for recording
access points for all RDA entities.
• If MARC 21 coding is not available, consider using
another element or recording method.
• In cases where MARC 21 coding is available, usage can be
consistent with current practice.
