2. MAIN IDEA
When deciding on ideas for our poster we wanted to include
our doll in it as itâs the symbol of FGM in our film and it
illustrates that our film revolves around a child, as well as
that we wanted a puppeteer ambiance as it connotes
entrapment and being controlled. Altogether we wanted our
poster to embody our film and symbolise how Madeline is
governed by the effects of her procedure.
The title of the film will be in capital letters at the bottom of
the poster, placed in the middle. The tagline will be slanted,
in smaller font.
Camera used: Canon EOS 100D
3. The dress on the doll is white to
symbolise innocence and purity, as well
as that it creates the idea of a fight
between darkness and light. There are
stains of blood on the bottom of her
dress to hint at our FGM idea. The
puppeteer strings are red as it connotes
danger and violence. The doll will use a
direct mode of address with an eerie
smile on her face which connotes the
danger that the doll represents. In this
shot the doll is looking directly at the
camera, from the audiences point of
view its almost as if sheâs staring at
them, this creates anxiety and fear in
the audience. The hands look almost
sinister as the strings are wrapped
around some fingers as if the hands
never want to let go. We chose not to
use this shot for our actual poster as we
did not like the framing of the shot and
we wouldnât have been able to fit in the
films details on it.
4. In these shots the doll is not sitting upright, she is
slightly tilted to the left in one and in the other shot
she is falling backwards. This connotes how
Madeline just wants to give up but she cant as her
actions are being controlled by the sinister person
who performed her procedure, he is the one
holding her up.
We decided not
to use this shot
as the doll is
falling completely
backwards and
we didnât think
that it accurately
embodies our
film.
We chose not to use this shot as we did not
like the framing of the shot and the doll looked
clumsily placed.
5. These two shots are similar in the sense that the doll isnât looking directly at
the camera in either, sheâs looking slightly left off the camera, this could
signify the ending of our film when Madeline âgives into her dark sideâ so
sheâs not herself, itâs almost as if sheâs staring into space. The strings are
holding her firmly upright which coincides with idea that sheâs being
controlled now and doesnât have any authority over her actions.
We decided
not to use
these shots as
in one the
framing isnât
right and
wouldnât allow
us to fit the
details of the
film, and the
other is quite
zoomed out
and not the
centre of
attention.
6. We took a few shots like this to
experiment on how we wanted the doll
positioned, we tried to have her hanging
to show a different angle of her being
controlled, in the end we decided not to
use any of these shots as they didnât
look as professional as we had hoped, it
also wasnât what we visioned when
creating ideas for our poster. As well as
that the hands at the top of the shots
werenât very clear and we wanted them
to stand out a bit as they need to look
sharp and sinister, and we wanted the
red of the strings to be bright red to
signify danger. In addition it doesnât look
like a horror film poster as we wouldnât
have been able to place the film details
effectively on the poster and it doesnât
really represent our plot.
7. We decided to use this shot for our
poster because its what we
envisioned when deciding on ideas
and it was framed well so it allows us
to place the film details on it
effectively. The doll is slightly tilted
which can connote disorientation yet
she is still looking directly at the
camera which creates an eerie
effect. This shot still allows us to see
the blood stains on her dress which
is enigmatic because it allows the
audience to deliberate why thereâs
blood on the doll and how it got
there. The poster should be effective
in the sense that a person should
look at it and want to find out more, it
should be mysterious yet informative.
